‘Gaslighting’ Is the Word of the Year for Good Reason

Authored by Jeffrey Tucker via The Epoch Times

Every year Merriam-Webster picks a word to capture the culture of a moment in time. The choice is based on the frequency and quantity of search as well as the departure from the norm. This year the choice seems perfect: gaslighting. It’s drawn from the 1944 film noir starring Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman.

The term means to be subjected to extended psychological trickery to cause the victim to question his or own reality. In the film, Boyer plays a handsome stranger who meets the beautiful heiress Bergman on a foreign journey and they fall in love. He convinces her to marry and move back together to London to her family home, whereby he embarks upon a subtle campaign to convince her she is bonkers while he secretly searches the home for legacy jewels he intends to steal.

Trudeau Supports Chinese Protestors After Calling Canadian Protests for Policy Change ‘Worrisome’

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed support for Chinese protestors demonstrating against government lockdowns, despite calling protests in his own country “worrisome.”

The prime minister said Tuesday that Chinese protesters are fighting for human rights by demonstrating against the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) “zero-COVID” policy. Chinese citizens’ frustration comes from the strict government lockdowns, which prevent citizens from leaving their homes for as long as 100 days, a lack of work bonuses and poor quarantine protocols and a slow economy.

“Canadians are watching very closely, obviously everyone in China should be allowed to express themselves, should be allowed to share their perspectives and to protest,” Trudeau said. “We’re going to continue to ensure that China will stand up for human rights and with people who are expressing themselves. We also need to make sure that China and places around the world are respecting journalists and their ability to do their job. We’ll continue to make that very clear.”

Brussels is Burning as the West’s Liberalism Comes Back to Haunt It

If the West wants to commit suicide, it should leave Hungary out of it, Magyar Nemzet publicist Tamas Pilhal writes

Sunday night was a night of celebration, bonfires, fun, and laughter in Belgian cities, but in some places, the revelry turned into full-scale riots.

It wasn’t Advent candles, but cars, dustbins, and shops that were lit up by enthusiastic New Belgians. They are Moroccans, in fact, and so it was with little restraint that they celebrated Morocco’s 2-0 victory over Belgium in the World Cup in Qatar.

Downtown Brussels, for example, has been smashed up, but the European Parliament building has been left alone, so this very important institution is still in operation and can continue to spin its wheels against us.

The horde attacked the police, looted, smashed, and destroyed. The perpetrators even pelted an ambulance with stones. An ambulance, I repeat.

World Cup 2022: Iranians Cheer for USA Over Home Country Amid Ongoing Protests

Amid protests in Iran that have lasted close to three months, many Iranians were rooting for the United States to defeat their own home country in Tuesday’s World Cup match.

Tuesday’s match was pivotal for both squads. Iran would have advanced to the knockout stage with a draw, while the USMNT needed a win, which it got, to advance.

However, some protesters feel an Iranian loss or draw will now hurt the regime on the world stage and give fuel to the protesters’ fight.

In an encrypted telephone interview with Fox News Digital Monday, an Iranian woman who called herself “Mahoora” and lives in southern Iran, said, “It’s not just some people in Iran, it is the majority of people in Iran that want the U.S. to win (on Tuesday). The silent majority [of Iranians] did not celebrate the regime team’s victory over Wales.”
