Cost of Getting Hammered in UK Soars 70% Since 2008

Brits are the most miserable in years as the headline inflation rate is at a four-decade high. Turbulent economic times pressure household finances, leading some to drown their miseries at the local pub.

But even at the pub, it’s hard to escape today’s disastrous macroeconomic backdrop of soaring inflation and slowing economic growth, with threats of stagflation as the Bank of England hits the brakes on the economy with rate hikes.

FT cites new data from food and drinks research company CGA that shows patrons of pubs are being hammered not by the drinks but by soaring costs for the average pint of beer, up 70% since the 2008 financial crisis.

CGA monitors beer prices at UK’s 90,000 bars and pubs. Data shows the average pint cost jumped from £2.30 in 2008 to £3.95 this year. The latest price increases are due to skyrocketing barley, energy, and labor costs. There are even risks of energy shortages and rolling blackouts later this year.

New York Times Op-Ed Applauds Inflation as Means to Enforce Green Diet

Following a general trend of excitement among extreme leftists in media, The New York Times has recently posted an Op-Ed which argues in favor of the inflationary crisis facing the US and much of the world because it forces the public to go vegan and give up meat “for the greater good.”

Just as late night propagandist Stephen Colbert cheered for higher gas prices and suggested people buy a Tesla (a vehicle far outside the affordability of the majority of Americans) if they want to avoid paying $15 a gallon for gas, the NYT Op-Ed has a familiar stench of elitism.

Over 60% of Americans Are Living Paycheck to Paycheck as Inflation Concerns Impact Savings

As inflation continues to rise, it’s impacting the spending power of consumers across the income spectrum.

A new report from PYMNTS.com and LendingClub found that nearly two-thirds of the US population — about 157 million adults — are living paycheck to paycheck. Compared to a year ago, that’s up 9 percentage points from 52% in April 2021 to 61% in April 2022.

Although the 61% in April is a slight decrease from the 64% of consumers living paycheck to paycheck in March 2022, it’s part of an upwards trend of consumers living paycheck to paycheck as the cost of living outpaces wage growth.

Former Judge Killed in “Targeted” Attack Against Judicial System, Officials Say

Authored by Lorenz Duschamps via The Epoch Times

A retired judge was shot and killed at his home in Wisconsin on Friday in what has been described by officials as a “targeted” attack against the judicial system.

John Roemer, a former circuit judge in Juneau County, is believed to be the victim of the murder that happened in New Lisbon at around 6:30 a.m. on June 3, according to reports. The 68-year-old man was found in a residence that a neighbor and public records said belonged to a retired county judge.

A second person, identified as a 56-year-old male and the alleged suspect, was discovered in the basement of the home with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul said during a news conference on Friday, also noting that a firearm was recovered from the scene.

Texas AG Launches Investigation Into Twitter; Alleges Company Lied About Number of Bots

Update (1530ET): Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Monday announced an investigation against Twitter to determine whether they’re lying about the number of fake bot accounts on the platform.

According to Paxton’s office, “bots” or spam accounts “inflate followers and reach, and often push deceptive and annoying activity,” Fox News reports.

“A large number of bot accounts not reduces users’ experience on the platform, but may also inflate the value of the company and the costs of doing business with it, thus directly harming consumers and businesses — specifically, Texas consumers and businesses,” according to the report.

Paxton said the difference between Twitter’s claims that less than 5% of users are bots versus his projections of possibly 20%, “would dramatically affect the cost of Texas consumers and businesses transacting with Twitter.”

Monday, June 6. Russia’s War on Ukraine: News and Information From Ukraine

Dispatches from Ukraine, provided by Forbes Ukraine’s editorial team.

As Russia’s attack on Ukraine continues and the war rages on, reliable sources of information are critical. Forbes Ukraine’s reporters gather information and provide updates on the situation.

Monday, June 6. Day 103. By Daryna Antoniuk

Nearly 700,000 Ukrainian soldiers are defending Ukraine against Russia, according to Ukrainian Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Kateryna Pavlichenko.

Russia has lost 31,250 troops in Ukraine since the start of the invasion, according to Ukraine’s General Staff.

English may be officially recognized as an official language of business in Ukraine. It could help the country attract more investment and accelerate Ukraine’s European integration, according to Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.

More people are coming back than leaving Ukraine, according to State Border Guard Service. Almost 31,000 people left Ukraine while almost 40,000 came back to the country on June 5. A total of 184,000 people have already returned to Ukraine, while almost 7 million people fled the invasion.

Russia has lost 31,250 troops in Ukraine since the start of the invasion, according to Ukraine’s General Staff.

Mariupol. Russian officials have reportedly shut down the occupied port city of Mariupol for quarantine over a possible cholera outbreak, according to Ukrainian authorities.

Ukraine’s Health Ministry began reporting suspected cases of cholera in the region on 1 June. “Mass burials and poor access to clean water has led to a critical situation in Mariupol,” said Deputy Health Minister Ihor Kuzin.

Sievierodonetsk. Fierce battles and street fights continue in Sievierodonetsk. There are enough Ukrainian forces to recapture the city, but Russia has a substantial numerical advantage in the region.

Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk “are dead cities today,” according to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky. Between 10,000 and 15,000 civilians are still in Sievierodonetsk.

Kharkiv. Russian missiles hit the Kharkiv region on Monday, damaging a critical infrastructure facility. One person was killed and one injured as a result of the attack.

Russian missiles also hit schools, kindergartens, houses, and a dormitory in Kharkiv oblast. No casualties were reported.

Mykolaiv. One person was killed, and several other people were injured during the Russian attack on a residential district in Mykolayiv.

Poltava. Ukraine’s armed forces shot down a Russian missile over the Poltava region.

Sumy. Russian troops continue to fire mortars at the border areas of the Sumy region. No casualties were reported.

Russia’s attack on Kyiv could be an attempt to disrupt the supply of Western weapons to Ukraine, according to the UK’s Ministry of Defense. Ukraine denied Russian reports that it housed military equipment inside a repair plant in Kyiv that was damaged.

Russia’s top general was killed by Ukrainian forces in the eastern Donbas region, Russian state media confirmed on June 6. Gen Roman Kutuzov had been killed while commanding troops from the self-declared Donetsk People’s Republic.

EU Interior Ministers: Concrete Measures Needed as Hunger Might Bring More Migrants From Africa

Five European Union nations, whose leaders fear that the threat of hunger could lead to an increase in the numbers of refugees from impoverished African countries, are calling for an end to the bloc’s “voluntary” solidarity with migrants with demands for concrete measures instead.

The interior ministers from Italy, Cyprus, Greece, Malta and Spain wrapped up two days of talks in Venice amid worries that the blockade of Ukrainian grain exports due to Russia’s invasion could see huge numbers of refugees from Africa flooding southern Europe.

Cypriot Interior Minister Nicos Nouris told reporters that a robust, common EU policy is needed on migration.

  1. How the heck did Boris survive the no-confidence vote?
That person is a menace to the UK and a disgrace to the office of PM.

    • Likely due to the fact it was other politicians voting on the issue. His sins just weren’t that big of a deal to fellow sinners. That, and the fact that as the biggest and most incompetent ringleader in a circus of clowns there just weren’t any clowns of remotely comparable stature to replace him were he to have been voted out.

      • The UK needs to restore power to the monarchy. Even Charles would be better than the clowns in the House of Commons.

  2. The best news feed out there! I depend on it every day. Excellent that you solved your computer problems. As a teacher of 50 years, I have survived several computer crashes and I know how disturbing they can be. Great recovery!!

    Political Scientist:
“Now we can say hello in NATO negotiations”

Published 7 June 2022 at 11.15 in Fria Tider

The Social Democrats’ renewed PKK deal with political savage Amineh Kakabaveh could lower Sweden’s chances of Nato membership, according to analysts.

    – If it is true that she has received the promise of party secretary Tobias Baudin (S), among others, that she will have continued support for her demands on Kurdish issues, we can definitely say hello in the NATO negotiations, says political scientist Marja Lemne to Dagens Nyheter.

Tobias Baudin announced today that the PKK agreement that the Social Democrats concluded with Amineh Kakabaveh in November is still valid. This is to persuade Kakabaveh not to vote to remove Justice Minister Morgan Johansson (S) in the no-confidence vote later on Tuesday. Under the agreement, the S will cooperate with the PYD, the Syrian branch of the Kurdish terrorist organisation PKK.

Socialist political scientist Ulf Bjereld writes on his blog that Turkey and President Erdogan “now have an opportunity to exploit the situation and (falsely) claim that Sweden allows terrorists to have political influence in the country”.
