Snouts in the Trough

Inflation is hitting the peons hard, but the German government is giving itself a raise.

It makes me want to quote Ogden Nash:

You can’t say When
To professional men,
For it’s always When to they;
They were doing fine in ’29,
And they’re doing fine today.

Many thanks to Hellequin GB for translating this article from the German-language service of the Epoch Times:

Government members’ salaries will increase by around €300

From April 1, the official salaries of the members of the government and the Federal President will increase by 1.8 percent. This emerges from data from the Federal Ministry of the Interior, about which the Bild (Tuesday edition) reports. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) will receive a salary increase of around €345/month, the other ministers an increase of €275.

Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is receiving an additional payment of €382. The reason for this is the result of collective bargaining in the public sector. There, an increase of 1.8 percent was negotiated for federal officials.

And the government salaries are based on their earnings. Reiner Holznagel, President of the Taxpayers’ Association, called for moderation. “If the collective bargaining agreement is adopted, then the Federal President, Chancellor, ministers and parliamentary state secretaries should make a deduction for the adjustment — that would be a fair signal in these times,” he said to Bild.

Afterword from the translator:

A salary increase of around €300 — some pensioners, Hartz IV recipients and low-wage earners do not even have this sum to live on to get through the month. This also affects many full-time employees with regular earnings, who due to increasing fuel prices, energy and food costs have less and less money available. Some have to work again after an 8-hour shift so that they can feed their families.

The salary increase of around €300 could be granted to those who serve and act for the benefit of the German people and, according to their oath of office, do their work. But then, Germans wouldn’t be living in a “democracy” any longer or in the “Best Germany of all Time”, right?
