Gates of Vienna News Feed 4/24/2022

Early this morning a man shouting “We have to kill Macron” entered a church in France, stabbed a priest multiple times, and then slashed a nun as she took the knife away from him. His efforts were in vain, however: Emmanuel Macron won re-election with 58.8% of the vote, while Marine Le Pen received 41.2%.

In other news, there was a major fire and explosion of unknown origin in the area of the Druzhba oil depot in the western Russian city of Bryansk.

Despite Record High Inflation in Hungary, Price Increase Still in Mid-Range Within EU Countries

Although inflation in Hungary hit a 15-year-old record in March, 11 EU countries still saw a higher increase in prices, according to Eurostat data. This puts the Hungarian level of inflation in the European Union middle range.

Consumer prices in Hungary grew by an annual 8.6 percent in March, the worst inflation figures in Hungary in 15 years.

However, according to recently published data by Eurostat, prices in Europe are rising so much that the average inflation rate of the 27 member states stands at 7.8%, which is only slightly below the Hungarian figure. In total, 11 EU countries had higher annual inflation in March than Hungary.

S&P Brings Greece One Notch From Investment Grade

Standard & Poor’s upgraded Greece’s credit rating one notch on Friday, taking it one step away from investment grade after more than a decade, with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis saying it confirms market confidence in the economy.

US agency raised the Greek rating from ‘BB’ to ‘BB+’, with a Positive outlook, it announced, noting that the rating decision “reflects our expectation of a continuous improvement in Greece’s policy effectiveness, while the fallout from the war in Ukraine appears manageable in light of considerable buffers in both the private and public sectors.”

“Our expectation that Greece’s fiscal buffers and proven policy effectiveness will allow the country to absorb the indirect impact of the war in Ukraine on its economy and public finances,” added the agency.

“The S&P upgrade, following two years of the pandemic and amid a war, confirms market confidence in the Greek economy,” Mitsotakis tweeted.

Motion Picture Association Wants Online ID Checks to Curb Piracy

The Motion Picture Association (MPA) wants stricter online identity checks to be part of the new trade agreement between the US and countries in the Indo-Pacific region. The film industry group also wants offline enforcement tools to apply online.

MPA is concerned that website operators use unconfirmed identities when signing up for Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) services. There are multiple types of IaaS services, but MPA narrows it down to CDNs, proxy services, domain registrars, and web hosting. Companies providing these services enable piracy by providing their services to piracy websites, MPA argues.

Italy: Vatican Clears Polish Cardinal of Abuse Negligence

Ex JPII secretary Dziwisz did nothing wrong says probe

(ANSA) — ROME, APR 22 — The Vatican on Friday cleared Polish Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz of negligence in failing to report child sex abuse when he was Archbishop of Krakow from 2005 to 2016.

The Holy See has decided to take no further action against the prelate after a probe conducted by Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, the former head of the Italian Bishops Conference (CEI), the papal nunciature in Poland announced.

Dziwisz, the longtime former secretary of Saint John Paul II, had been accused of covering up clerical sex abuse in his position as Krakow archbishop.

Last June the Vatican set up a commission led by Bagnasco to look at allegations of cover-ups by abuse victims.

Dziwisz, who turns 83 next week, himself urged the commission to be set up to examine what he called “calumny”.

The commission was set up in the wake of a Polish TV documentary that caused concern.

Dziwisz expressed gratitude to the Holy See Friday saying the charges were “without merit”.

To Europe’s Relief, France’s Macron Wins But Far-Right Gains

PARIS (AP) — French President Emmanuel Macron comfortably won a second term Sunday, triggering relief among allies that the nuclear-armed power won’t abruptly shift course in the midst of the war in Ukraine from European Union and NATO efforts to punish and contain Russia’s military expansionism.

The second five-year term for the 44-year-old centrist spared France and Europe from the seismic upheaval of having firebrand populist Marine Le Pen at the helm, Macron’s presidential runoff challenger who quickly conceded defeat but still scored her best-ever electoral showing.

Acknowledging that “numerous” voters cast ballots for him simply to keep out the fiercely nationalist far-right Le Pen, Macron pledged to reunite the country that is “filled with so many doubts, so many divisions” and work to assuage the anger of French voters that fed Le Pen’s campaign.

UK Left Celebrates St George’s Day With Annual False Claims Saint Was ‘Turkish Immigrant’

Leftists in Britain celebrated St George’s Day on Saturday with their annual issuing of false claims that the Roman soldier of Cappadocian Greek ethnicity was, variously, “Turkish”, “Arab”, and “a migrant worker” in an effort to “own” English patriots.

The fact that England’s patron saint, St George, was not an Englishman is not atypical — Ireland’s St Patrick was British and Scotland’s St Andrew, the first-called of Christ’s apostles, hailed from the Holy Land — but is seized upon every year by left-wingers as a stick with which to beat patriots in general and sceptics of mass migration and multiculturalism in particular.

Caroline Glick: Palestinian Terrorism Meets Israeli Paralysis

In the span of two weeks from late March to early April, 14 Israelis were murdered, and more than a dozen were wounded in five separate terror attacks in five locations countrywide. This is the highest number of lethal terror attacks to take place over such a short period in years.

Israel has faced invariable terror onslaughts at the hands of its Arab neighbors for over a century. And over the course of this long war, Israel has learned the hard way that there is no nice way to fight terrorism. The only way to end a terror onslaught is to go on offense; to attack the terrorists on their home turf before they can attack Israeli civilians; to dismantle the militaries and social infrastructures that fund, incite, reward and incentivize terrorists to attack.

To carry out such a counter-offensive, Israel needs a strong, stable government whose members and leaders recognize that appeasement isn’t an option because appeasing terrorists convinces them they are winning and should escalate their attacks.

Unfortunately, the chance Israel’s current government will go on the offensive is low. There are several causes for the government’s incompetence. First, last week, the Naftali Bennett-Yair Lapid government lost its one-vote majority in Israel’s 120-member Knesset. MK Idit Silman, a member of Prime Minister Bennett’s six-member parliamentary faction, resigned her position as coalition whip and joined the opposition, which is led by former prime minister and Likud party leader Benjamin Netanyahu.

Following Silman’s resignation, despite the Ieft-leaning Israeli media’s overwhelming support for the government, commentators and politicians from across Israel’s political spectrum agree that the government is on life support.

The government’s instability is incurable because it is baked in…

Gaza Islamic Scholar Abd Al-Hamid Dabbous: The Goal of Jihad is to Make People Convert to Islam…

…People Who Convert by Force Later Regret Not Converting on Their Own Free Will; People Who Refuse to Convert Can Pay the Jizya Poll Tax Instead

Gazan Islamic scholar Abd Al-Hamid Dabbous said in an April 10, 2022 show on Al-Quds Al-Youm TV (Palestine — Islamic Jihad) that Jihad is the “pinnacle of Islam” and makes Islam “glamorous, strong, and lovable.” He said that Jihad is the means by which Muslims defend their lands and spread Islam to the entire world. Explaining that Muslims do not want to terrorize people but rather to convert them to Islam, Dabbous said that if non-Muslims do not accept Islam and refuse to pay the jizya poll tax “in humiliation,” then the Muslims will fight them until they attain martyrdom or victory. The show also featured footage of fighters from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s Al-Quds Brigades in military exercises, praying, and launching rockets, as well as footage from an Israeli military funeral and Israeli infantry training.

“This is Not the Country We Were Enjoying Before”: The Persecution of Christians, March 2022

The following are among the abuses Muslims inflicted on Christians throughout the month of March, 2022:

The Muslim Slaughter of Christians

Iraq: Family members murdered Eman Sami Maghdid, 20, known as “Maria.” Her “crime” was having embraced Christianity and abandoning the marriage she had been forced into at the age of 12. Her 18-year-old brother and perhaps uncle responded by slaughtering her on Sunday, March 6. Her body “tied with a tape, thrown at the side of the road, with many stab wounds,” was found later, according to a local source:

“[S]he was punished by her family for leaving Islam, specifically for being emancipated and embracing the Christian religion; in short, she was ‘guilty’ of apostasy… The young woman was well known for her activism, her struggle for women’s rights, which—together with her conversion to Christianity—led her to be condemned by her family…

Latest News in the Russia-Ukraine War

Ukraine: President Volodymyr Zelensky met with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Sunday, according to a Ukrainian official, in the highest-level U.S. visit yet to the war-torn country.

During the meeting, which the U.S. hasn’t confirmed, the Ukrainian leader is expected to discuss military assistance as Russian forces build up for an offensive in the east of the country.

Ukraine’s southern operational command said its forces had recaptured eight settlements in the southern region of Kherson, most of which is occupied by Moscow.

Mr. Zelensky said he would halt all negotiations with Russian officials if Moscow follows through on alleged plans to conduct a referendum next month on establishing a “Kherson People’s Republic” along the lines of the Donetsk and Luhansk statelets in the east.

Russia: Moscow will be the first stop this week for U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres, who will then visit Kjiv. His appeal for a four-day truce during the Orthodox Holy Week was rejected by Moscow, which characterized it as a ruse to allow Ukraine’s military to rest and regroup.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said its forces had destroyed a gunpowder-and-explosives factory in Pavlohrad, a city near the eastern Donbas area, and four weapons depots in the northern Kharkiv region.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, in an Easter message posted to the Kremlin website on Sunday, thanked the Russian Orthodox Church for its assistance to those who need care and support “in our difficult time.”

Riots in Sweden a ‘Direct Result of Mass Migration’ Legal Philosopher Says

Recent riots in Sweden are a product of unfettered mass migration, a Dutch legal philosopher told Fox News on Friday.

On “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” host Tucker Carlson said the country was historically “tranquil,” but recent riots show the consequences of unfettered mass migration.

“Recently, a Danish politician organized an event to burn a Koran. In response to this, there were riots across the country,” Carlson said.

Eva Vlaardingerbroek said the current state of Sweden is an example of how a secure nation can turn very dangerous as “a direct result of mass migration.”

Romania Prepares to Accept 300,000 Refugees in a Single Day, Fearing the Worst is Yet to Come in Ukraine

BUCHAREST, Romania — Russia is on the back foot, its attempted two-day regime change operation in Ukraine turned into a grinding, two-month war in the face of fierce local resistance. Instead of conquering Kyiv, Russian President Vladimir Putin is publicly determined to consolidate Moscow’s control over the Donbas region. But in neighboring Romania, where more than 740,000 Ukrainians have already fled, the authorities believe that the worst may be yet to come.

“We are still preparing for a larger wave to come,” Madalina Turza, an aide to Romania’s prime minister and coordinator of the country’s humanitarian assistance efforts, said in an interview at her office in Victoria Palace. “The information coming both from media and institutional channels is that Ukraine is still under attack and that Putin is pushing very hard to get Odesa. And Odesa is very close to Romania.”

Even just the threat that Russian forces might advance on Odesa, a Black Sea port city with a pre-war population of nearly 1 million people, sent thousands of residents fleeing for the border. The Romanian coastal resort town of Neptun, for example, is now host to hundreds of children from a Jewish orphanage that decided to evacuate last month.

To date, only Poland has accepted more Ukrainian refugees than Romania. But a concerted Russian effort to take Odesa — or a renewed push for Kyiv — would make the current flow of refugees seem like a mere trickle.
