Canada: Economists Bracing for Recession and Four More Interest Rate Hikes

Economists are warning Canadians that further interest rate hikes and a recession could be coming very soon.

A new survey by Finder which polled the country’s leading economists found that most agree that the Canadian economy is heading for a recession and that people should brace themselves for its impact.

Of those surveyed, a majority said that it would likely arrive within the first six months of 2023, while a quarter said it could take a year before it begins — coming in early 2024.

High Gas Prices: The Pain is the Point

By early April, the average price for a gallon of gasoline in the U.S. had reached $4.23, up more than 78% in the 14 months since President Joe Biden took office. It’s a political albatross around his neck, but it’s one that his policy team has deliberately placed there. If the president wants to blame someone for higher prices, he need only look at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Throughout his presidential campaign, Biden promised to wage war on the U.S. energy industry. “I want you to look at my eyes,” he said. “I guarantee you. I guarantee you. We’re going to end fossil fuel.” That’s pretty unequivocal. And his policies reflect that.

1 Arrested After Scaling Wilson Building in DC Climate Protest

Climate activists gathered in the District on Friday, protesting fossil fuel dependency and calling for action this Earth Day.

Among the groups protesting Friday — a series of protests are planned — is Extinction Rebellion DC, which has launched a campaign against Washington Gas to oppose further investments in gas infrastructure. The group wants D.C. to transition away from methane gas and onto green energy.

WTOP’s Alejandro Alvarez, reporting from the scene in downtown D.C., said a group of about 30 Extinction Rebellion demonstrators headed to the Wilson Building, which houses Mayor Muriel Bowser and the D.C. Council, on Pennsylvania Avenue around 8 a.m.

There, one of the protesters scaled partway up the face of the Wilson Building to unfurl a large banner reading “No new fossil fuels” over the front entrance.

80-Year-Old Michigan Man Shoots Intruder Dead: Police

An elderly Michigan man is accused of fatally shooting an intruder who entered a Flint Township residence Thursday, authorities said.

The intruder, reportedly 31 years old, made his way into the residence around 8:45 p.m. and was confronted by an 80-year-old man with a firearm.

The elderly man fired at least one round, the Flint Township Police Department said.

The intruder died as a result of his wounds, according to a report.

The 80-year-old man was taken into police custody, but he was released Friday as the police continued their investigation, the report noted.

Activists at Seattle Starbucks Superglue Themselves to Counter to Protest Upcharge for Non-Dairy Milk

Two activists were arrested on Wednesday after supergluing their hands to the café counters at a Starbucks in Seattle.

The two people were among a group of protestors who entered the coffee shop at the Starbucks headquarters in Seattle to protest the chain’s practice of charging extra for customers who request milk alternatives.

“Save the planet, save the cows, stop the vegan upcharge now!” the activists shouted after making their way to the counter, as seen in video livestreamed to Facebook by PETA.

Amazon Palm Scanning Payments Arrive in Austin, Texas

In Austin, Texas, Whole Foods shoppers can now pay using their palm. The pay-by-palm service is enabled by the Amazon One devices, which link a user’s palm signature to their debit or credit card.

“Amazon One is all about making everyday activities, like paying at a store, easier and more convenient for customers,” an Amazon representative said. “We built Amazon One to offer a quick, reliable, and secure way for people to identify themselves or authorize a transaction while moving seamlessly through their day.”

Paying using the pay-by-palm device takes about a second. While it is convenient, the technology raises privacy concerns.

Chicago-Area Lawsuit Blows Up Media Defenses of Critical Race Theory

Just about everything wrong with critical race theory and the badly misnamed “anti-racism” movement is summarized in one lawsuit filed late last month against the public school system of Evanston, Illinois.

It is no overstatement to say the school system’s practices are vile.

Not only does the suit, along with findings by the Department of Education, detail CRT’s usual litany of racially divisive indoctrination activities, but it also confirms that school officials use the “fighting racism” excuse as cover for teaching that individualism and meritocracy are oppressive, that the ideal of “equality” and even the nuclear family itself are both racist, and that true anti-racists will question “the very foundations of the liberal order, including equality theory, legal reasoning, Enlightenment rationalism, and principles of constitutional law.”

In sum, this claptrap isn’t designed to combat racism at all, at least not as that idea is traditionally understood. Instead, it is intended to indoctrinate teachers and students in service of an internal revolution against the entire edifice of Western society.

CNN+ Staffers in “Total and Utter Shock” at Failure of Network

CNN+ staffers were in “total and utter shock” at the news their failed network was being shut down, with some reacting to the news by “freaking out,” it has been revealed.

Earlier this week it was announced Discovery would shut down the network just one month after its launch due to massively underwhelming subscriber numbers.

Last week, it was revealed that fewer than 10,000 people were watching CNN+ per day, despite the network luring Chris Wallace from Fox News and Kasie Hunt from NBC News.

Staffers’ reaction to the announcement the network would be shut down on April 30 sounded like they were being informed of a loved one’s death.

Disney Loses Nearly $50 Billion in Stock Value Since Waging War Against Florida’s Anti-Grooming Law

The Walt Disney Company has lost nearly $50 billion dollars in stock market value since the start of March, when executives shifted gears and became more actively involved in politically-charged ideological culture warfare against Gov. Ron DeSantis and Florida leadership.

According to the Washington Examiner, the downfall of Disney has been $46.6 billion USD since March 1, which the outlet marks as shortly before the start of their ongoing conflict against the state of Florida.

The latest battle has Disney losing their special self-governing status. Tens of billions of dollars were wiped out of Disney’s stock value since Tuesday, alone. Coincidentally, that was the same day DeSantis announced that eliminating Disney’s “legacy special district” status was on the session agenda.

Some Eco-Warriors Arrested Over the Post Printing Press Protest Had Similar Run-ins With Police

Virginia School Administrator Says She Was Harassed, Forced Out for Questioning Critical Race Theory

A former administrator at a Virginia school is suing her county school board for creating an atmosphere of racial division and harassment that forced her to leave her job.

Emily Mais was an assistant principal at Agnor-Hurt Elementary School in Charlottesville until she resigned in September 2021 after expressing concerns over mandatory, race-based teacher training.

After questioning the Albemarle County school district’s “anti-racist” curriculum, Mais was harassed, slandered, and humiliated by officials, according to the lawsuit filed against the Albemarle County School Board last week by Alliance Defending Freedom.

Her lawsuit argues that the curriculum teaches critical race theory, which attributes negative characteristics to individuals based on their race and embraces the ideas that white people are entitled and that only whites are capable of being racist.

Election Interference? Leaders of Germany, Spain and Portugal Pen Letter Urging French to Reject ‘Far-Right’ Le Pen and Reelect ‘Democratic’ Macron

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa penned a column published by the Le Monde daily newspaper in France just hours after the televised debate between presidential contenders Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen, in which they called on the French people to vote for Emmanuel Macron, who they label the “democratic candidate,” in Sunday’s second-round election.

The letter states the choice facing the French people “is crucial for France and for all of us in Europe” and claims their choice is between a “democratic candidate who believes that France is stronger in a powerful and autonomous European Union, and a far-right candidate, who openly sides with those who attack our freedom and our democracy.”

The three leaders claim to be of the belief that the war launched by Russian President Vladimir Putin against Ukraine “targets the values that France and our countries defend: democracy, sovereignty, freedom and the rule of law” and carries the risk of “redrawing borders by force, as […] has been done so many times in our bloody past.”

Energy Crisis: Italy to Ration Use of Air Conditioning, Heat, to Wean Country Off Russian Power

Two weeks after Italians were told they’d have a choice between “air conditioning or peace”, the government appears to have made the choice for them, introducing rationing of AC and heat in a bid to reduce the nation’s dependence on imported Russian energy.

From May 21st, public buildings such as government offices and schools in Italy will be limited on the degree to which they can use heating and cooling to regulate the temperature in a bid to reduce energy use. In the summer, air conditioning units will not be set to cooler than 25 degrees centigrade (77°F) and in the winter heating will not be set to warmer than 19°C (66°F), Il Giornale reports.

Germany: Bavaria to Introduce ‘Eco-Token’ To Reward ‘Environmentally Conscious Behavior’

In Bavaria, in the course of the creeping establishment of a climate dictatorship, climate-friendly good behavior will soon be rewarded with an “eco —token”. It is nothing more than a points system to indirectly punish unruly citizens.

This new control system is to be introduced later this year. This is a project that was first described in the Bavarian “Climate Protection Offensive” of 2019 , has been in preparation for a long time and is designed to “promote sustainable behavior in everyday life by rewarding environmentally conscious action” .

Specifically, a documentation system is to be developed in which users can collect bonus points for “environmentally conscious behavior” in the form of sustainability tokens. These can then be redeemed at swimming pools or theaters, for example. For better implementation, a state office and a financial service provider are involved.

David responded with sarcasm, saying “‘I’ll have two sausages”.

But there were lots of other users who were equally critical with some accusing them of jumping on a band wagon.

Le Pen Demonized as Never Before by Monolithic French Media Right Before Final Vote

Until April 10, the French private and public media focused their attacks on Éric Zemmour, who was considered more right-wing, and had a more liberal-conservative program. When faced with Zemmour, the more economically social and less conservative Marine Le Pen was presented as relatively moderate.

The agenda to keep her party from being demonized embarked upon by Jean-Marie Le Pen’s daughter when she took over the leadership of the National Front (FN) in 2011 thus seemed to have finally reached its goal, four years after her party changed its name to Rassemblement national (RN), or National Rally.

But everything has changed since Monday, April 11. As soon as the results of the first round were published, and now that it is known that the incumbent president Emmanuel Macron will have to face Marine Le Pen in a re-run of the 2017 presidential second-round, the RN candidate is again presented as “far-right,” “anti-republican,” and a threat to democracy and civil peace.

Macron Claims Banning Islamic Veil Would Spark “Civil War” In France

French President Emmanuel Macron claimed during a debate that banning the Islamic veil would spark “civil war” in France, although a majority of French people still support the ban.

Macron made the statement during a presidential debate with challenger Marine Le Pen.

Le Pen, who supports a full ban on the veil, said she was “not carrying out a war against their religion.”

“I am for the banning of the veil in public space. The veil is a uniform imposed by the Islamists, a large part of the young women who put it on cannot do otherwise in reality, even if they dare not say so,” Le Pen told viewers.

“What you’re saying is very serious,” Macron responded. “You’re going to create civil war if you do it.”

PM Orban Visits Poper Francis First After Election Victory

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s first overseas trip after his fourth consecutive two-thirds election victory was to the Vatican where Pope Francis received him in a private audience on Thursday.

Ukraine War Threatens Italy’s ‘Social Moorings’ — Lamorgese

Minister warns of conflict’s impact on economy, jobs

(ANSA) — ROME, APR 12 — The knock-on effects of the war in Ukraine risk creating major social problems in Italy, Interior Minister Luciana Lamorgese warned on Tuesday.

“The situation of uncertainty on the economic and social front that the war opened, in part due to the effect on the energy market and the supply of raw materials, could have a major impact on industrial production, economic growth, employment levels and, therefore, on the country’s social moorings,” Lamorgese said at a ceremony for the 170th anniversary of the State Police force.

She stressed that “democracies must not accept this attempted cultural and political move backwards” represented by Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

“On the contrary, they must create the conditions so the consequences of the war can be managed, limiting the possible social impact of this new crisis,” she said.

Refugees Fleeing Ukraine (Since 24 February 2022)*

5,133,747

Last updated 21 Apr 2022

*Arrival statistics are compiled from a variety of sources, mainly data provided by authorities from official border crossing points. While every effort has been made to ensure that all statistical information is verified, figures on some arrivals represent an estimate. Triangulation of information and sources is performed on a continuous basis. Therefore, amendments in figures may occur, including retroactively. Notably, the right to move freely within the Schengen area means there are very few border controls within the European Union. The data of arrivals in Schengen countries (Hungary, Poland, Slovakia) bordering Ukraine therefore only represents border crossings into that country, but we estimate that a large number of people have moved onwards to other countries. In addition, UNHCR does not count individuals from bordering countries leaving Ukraine to return home.

Among those who fled Ukraine are also Ukrainian nationals with dual citizenship.

An additional 105,000 people moved to the Russian Federation from the Donetsk and Luhansk regions between 18 and 23 February.
