Argentina Inflation Surged to 20-Year High in March

(Bloomberg) — Argentina’s inflation rate galloped to its fastest pace in March since 2002, challenging a strategy by the government to cool prices that already lacked support from within the ruling coalition.

Consumer prices rose 6.7% last month compared to February, the highest level since Argentina was in one of its worst economic crises 20 years ago. Inflation reached 55.1% from a year ago, the highest annual level of President Alberto Fernandez’s presidency and most since June 2019. Both results were above all forecasts among economists surveyed by Bloomberg.

Prices for education, textiles, utilities and food all exceeded the headline figure in March. Core inflation accelerated to 6.4% too.

Economy Minister Martin Guzman had already warned on Monday that price increases for March would be above at least 6%, surpassing economists’ expectations at the time.

Many economists are now forecasting that prices may rise more than 60% annually this year,

Canada’s New Budget Pushes Exploration of a Central Bank Digital Currency

Canada’s recently released 2022 budget includes texts saying that the government will review the need for a central bank digital currency. Critics warn that digital currencies carry privacy risks, the potential for more government control, and the inability to use cash in the future.

The review will look into how “to maintain the security and stability of the financial system in light of these evolving business models and technological capabilities; and the potential need for a central bank digital currency in Canada.”

LONDON — U.K. inflation came in at an annual 7% in March — its highest for 30 years — as soaring food and energy prices continue to squeeze consumers and pose a dilemma for policymakers.

Consumer prices rose by 1.1% month-on-month, outstripping expectations for a 0.7% climb in a Reuters poll of economists, which had also projected a 6.7% annual increase.

The 7% annual rise in the consumer price index is the highest since March 1992, outstripping the 6.2% increase recorded in February.

Unique Czech Inflation — Why Are Prices Rising So Fast in the Country?

The cost of living crisis in the Czech Republic is rising rapidly with the growth of inflation to almost 13 percent almost certainly not yet over.

Due to the recovery from the pandemic and the Russian invasion, most economies are suffering, but Czechia is an exception. Almost nowhere are prices rising as fast as in this country — only the Baltics are a little worse off. There are several reasons for this.

Exclusive New Video Appears to Show Suspect Frank James Allegedly on His Way to Brooklyn Subway Shooting

Exclusive video appears to show Brooklyn subway shooting suspect 00:28 NEW YORK — It has been more than 24 hours since the subway mass shooting in Sunset Park, Brooklyn turned a morning commute into chaos, and police are still looking for the man responsible.

Mayor Eric Adams says they are now calling Frank James a suspect, instead of just a person of interest, and police released new pictures of him.

[…]

Investigators say the suspect unloaded 33 rounds and threw smoke bombs. Fortunately, every single victim is expected to be OK, and many have already been released from the hospital.

As police stood guard at the 36th Street subway station Wednesday morning, one commuter blessed herself with the sign of the cross before getting on the subway.

The station was the scene of sheer horror the morning before, as riders were seen running for their lives through smoke and away from gunfire.

Police say 62-year-old Frank James attacked straphangers in the tunnel between the 59th Street and 36th Street stations, shooting 10 people and injuring 13 more when it’s assumed he set off smoke bombs, while wearing a gas mask.

On 4/12/22 at 8:30 AM, Frank Robert James fired numerous gun shots inside an “N” line subway car at 36th St & 4th Ave subway station causing serious injuries to 10 people. Anyone with info about the incident or his whereabouts should contact @NYPDTips or call 1-800-577-TIPS. pic.twitter.com/MaeF16i4bX

[…]

The mayor is still in isolation after being diagnosed with COVID, but he spoke virtually Wednesday to a number of media outlets about the investigation.

Detectives believe James entered the subway at the Kings Highway station — no one in the area seemingly aware of what he would do next.

“Well, there’s no evidence that indicates at this time that there was an accomplice,” said Adams.

The mayor said new information became available that upgraded James from a person of interest to a suspect. The city issued alerts Wednesday on cellphones.

“I’m sure more than one person identified him as the person in the subway,” retired NYPD Lt. Donald Drogin told CBS2, saying that means police are one step closer to catching James. “That’s the guy, 100%, that they’re focusing on. When they’re a person of interest, maybe they wanted to talk him, and he had a good alibi…

Man Charged With Murder After Pedestrian Run Down Dies in Custody at Hospital

A Gloucester County man arrested last month on charges that he ran down a pedestrian with his minivan following a dispute has died in custody from an apparent medical issue, authorities confirmed.

Giovanni Esposito, 68, who was charged with murder in the killing of Michael G. Cranmer, 31, in Paulsboro, died April 8 at Cooper University Hospital, according to Salem County Correctional Facility Warden John Cuzzupe.

Based on a preliminary review, Esposito’s death was the result of a medical issue, Cuzzupe said, but the Salem County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the matter.

Details on the nature of his health problem were not disclosed.

Esposito was transferred from the jail to Salem Medical Center on April 5, then transferred to Cooper University Hospital, Camden, on April 7, Cuzzupe said, before dying the following day.

Esposito allegedly drove onto a Paulsboro sidewalk on the afternoon of March 20 and ran down Cranmer, who was homeless and living in a wooded area in the borough, according to Gloucester County prosecutors.

A witness who claimed he knew both men said each had described a feud, though the nature of the dispute was not disclosed during court proceedings. Esposito had allegedly struck Cranmer with the minivan on a previous occasion, causing only minor injuries, prosecutors said…

Oberlin College Still Has Not Paid $33 Million Owed to Family-Run Bakery for Defamation Lawsuit

Ohio’s Oberlin College lost their defamation lawsuit appeal against Gibson Bakery at the beginning of April. But the school continues to contest paying the family financial compensation over accusations that the local business was “racist.”

According to the Daily Mail, Oberlin was originally obligated to pay $40 million, but that settlement was later reduced to $25 million in damages and another $6 million in legal fees. Oberlin College was ordered by Ohio’s state appeals court to pay Gibson’s Bakery, but the college continues to contest the payout, and says it is considering its options.

The bakery was falsely accused of “racism” after calling the police when three black Oberlin students shoplifted a bottle of wine in November 2016.

Pointing to Musk’s intimations that he will crack down on censorship on the platform, Carlson urged that “A free Twitter would mean an open debate about ideas on the single most important incubator of elite opinion in the world.”

He added, “It would mean a return to free and fair elections in the United States. A system in which both sides are allowed to make their case to the public and then the public can decide, it’s called democracy.”

“And above all, a free Twitter would mean a direct challenge to the people in charge of our country’s institutions, many of whom are incompetent,” Carlson added.

Wisconsin Supreme Court to Hear Ballot Drop Box, Absentee Ballot Arguments

Microchipping Humans is Already a Thing

A British-Polish firm has been selling implantable payment microchips for the past year.

Implantable microchips have been available since 1998. However, those that can allow users to make contactless payments were introduced by a British-Polish form called Walletmor last year.

The rice-grain sized microchip weighs less than a gram. The chip and its antenna are encased in a natural material that resembles plastic called biopolymer.

“The implant can be used to pay for a drink on the beach in Rio, a coffee in New York, a haircut in Paris — or at your local grocery store,” Walletmor’s founder and chief executive Wojtek Paprota told the BBC. “It can be used wherever contactless payments are accepted.

Soviet Era Drone That Crashed in Croatia Carried Aerial Bomb, Experts Say

A Soviet era reconnaissance drone that crashed in the Croatian capital of Zagreb last month without causing any harm to residents carried an aerial bomb that exploded after hitting the ground, a panel of experts say.

The drone, flying at 1,000 metres, flew from Hungary on March 10 and crashed seven minutes after entering Croatia’s air space, the Croatian government had said.

Both Hungary and Croatia are NATO members.

Ukraine: Russian forces advanced on a contested steelworks complex in Mariupol. Buses meant to deliver humanitarian aid and evacuate civilians were blocked by Russian soldiers, Ukraine said. Russia shelled civilian targets in the northeastern city of Kharkiv and the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, a hub for refugees who fled Mariupol, Ukraine said.

U.S.: President Biden said the U.S. would deliver an additional $800 million in weapons, ammunition and security assistance to Ukraine, and he spoke with Mr. Zelensky about U.S. support. The Biden administration is moving to significantly expand the intelligence it is providing Ukraine’s forces. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said countries that maintain their ties to Russia risk isolation from the global economy.

After Mr. Biden used the word “genocide” to describe alleged Russian atrocities in Ukraine, U.S. officials emphasized on Wednesday that only a legal process could lead to a formal genocide designation by the U.S.

Apple CEO Tim Cook Says Allowing App Store Choice Would Harm User Privacy

Apple continues to fight tooth and nail to keep strict control over its highly lucrative App Store, this time appealing to people’s desire to enjoy better privacy while using mobile devices.

In many countries around the world, this and other tech behemoths’ policies on this front are being questioned for their monopolistic nature, including in the US and in the EU. The effort in Europe is aimed at allowing users to install apps from sources other than the App Store on their iPhones, while in the US, regulators are targeting both Apple and Google with a number of antitrust bills.

But Apple CEO Tim Cook is spinning the story to say that if these legislative moves succeed, customers’ privacy, rather than the company’s bottom line, would suffer.

  1. Double Standard for Refugees in Czechia? You bet.

Though I find it interesting how the “Roma People” – when they are caught illegaly trading underage prostitutes in Britain – become “Czechs”, or when Canada opened up their border to the Czech Republic some time ago, and literally tens of thousands of gypsies went to Canada – to the promised land where people don’t lock their houses, can you imagine that? Yes, well, those “Canadian Gypsies” were also became “Czechs” when Canadians started to wonder where all the house robbers come from. But here – they are the “roma people”, out of a sudden!

PS: I have nothing against the gypsies, I used to work with some, and I know they can be nice people too. But as a group, they are a source of low level criminality, thefts, frauds, and the occasional robbery. And they like to travel – en masse – like water they always flow wherever there are “more wealthy people”.

SCB: Sweden could have 12 million inhabitants by 2040

Published 13 April 2022 at 11.23 in Fria Tider

The Ukraine war has overturned SCB’s earlier projections of a Sweden with a majority population from the Third World in 2028. Now we could have 12 million inhabitants by 2040, 750,000 of whom will be from Ukraine.

    Population change
Most Arabs, Somalis and Afghans become Swedes in 2021
12% of Sweden’s 21-year-old men were born in Afghanistan
Hübinette: “4 out of 10 children have a foreign background”
Swedes flee Gothenburg – new arrivals move in
Thousands more Afghans to Sweden – the increase is entirely men

    Show all
Every year SCB makes a population forecast for Sweden broken down by age, gender and country of birth. Based on the figures, Fria Tider makes a population change forecast showing when people from third world countries will take over as the new majority population in Sweden.

According to the 2021 SCB figures, this would happen in 2028, but now it turns out that the population is expected to increase by between 900,000 and 1.7 million inhabitants by 2040 according to the SCB’s new forecast, while refugee migration from Ukraine is pushing back the importance of traditional Arab and African immigration.

However, the war makes the forecast very difficult to assess and SCB has therefore developed five different scenarios of future immigration, including people fleeing Ukraine who are now granted residence permits under the EU’s mass refugee directive.

In the fifth scenario, the population increases by 1.7 million to 12.1 million in 2040, with 750,000 coming from Ukraine.

However, Swedes will still be a minority in their own country and under the highest immigration scenario, this would happen as early as 2028.

Under this scenario, however, ethnic Europeans remain in the majority somewhat longer than under previous SCB estimates, which suggested that mainly Muslim immigrants from the Third World would take over the role of the majority population in Sweden as early as 2038.
