Caroline Glick: Colleyville and the “Professional” Civil Servants

Last Saturday morning, an armed Islamic terrorist named Malik Faisal Akram entered Congregation Beth Israel in Colleyville, Texas and took the rabbi and three congregants hostage. Eleven hours later, after the hostages freed themselves and FBI officers entered the synagogue and either killed Akram or watched him kill himself, the episode ended. Matt De Sarno, the FBI agent in charge at the scene, walked over to the waiting press corps to brief reporters on the events of the day. And there he announced, incongruously that what had just happened was not an antisemitic attack.

As he put it, Akram’s motive in entering a synagogue during prayer services and taking four Jews hostage wasn’t “specifically related to the Jewish community.”

The disconnect between De Sarno’s claim and the self-evident reality of the event that he was ostensibly charged with handling provoked an enraged response from American Jews. Some media organs also voiced criticism of the FBI’s denial of the obvious fact that a man who enters a synagogue during Shabbat services, cursing Jews and “Jewish power,” and takes Jews hostage is by definition motivated by hatred for Jews.

In the face of the outpouring of angry criticism, and after receiving a gentle push from US President Joe Biden, who helpfully referred to the incident at Beth Israel as “a terror attack” but didn’t have a good explanation for “why [Akram] was using antisemitic and anti-Israeli expressions,” the FBI reversed course.

Sunday afternoon, the Bureau released a statement acknowledging that the antisemitic terrorist attack at Beth Israel had in fact been a terrorist attack that targeted the Jewish community.

Some people (largely located on the left side of the political spectrum), will argue that De Sarno’s denial of Akram’s antisemitic motive was a “professional” oversight. Since De Sarno is a “professional,” rather than a “politician,” so the thinking goes, everything De Sarno does in his job is necessarily based on purely “professional” considerations. To fix what failed, De Sarno and his ilk require more professional training…

The Pandemic Job Shuffle

Policymaking involves tradeoffs. As the Covid-19 pandemic started in the U.S. in early 2020, governments chose to impose lockdowns and other restrictions in an effort to limit the spread of disease. Most knew that “flattening the curve” would also flatten the economy. But while initial government reactions to the pandemic were relatively uniform, government measures have varied substantially since the spring of 2020. Some states, wary of the economic and social costs of restrictive measures, largely moved away from lockdowns; others heedlessly maintained them. New data show the different approaches had important consequences.

Job losses in March and April 2020 exceeded 22 million nationwide. The unemployment rate jumped from 3.5 percent in February 2020 to 14.7 percent in April 2020. Then, as government restrictions on businesses and individuals eased, unemployment began a rapid and steady decline, reaching 6.4 percent at the end of the Trump presidency and 3.9 percent a year later.

Payrolls have recovered somewhat, but nationwide there are still 3.6 million, or 2.3 percent, fewer jobs than at the pre-pandemic peak. The recovery has been uneven. Only four states—Utah, Idaho, Arizona, and Texas—have recovered all their jobs lost to the pandemic, with payrolls rising 3.9, 1.9, 0.2, and 0.2 percent respectively since February 2020. All four are Republican-led and imposed lenient Covid restrictions.

Dr Matteo Bassetti, a familiar face to Italians over the course of the pandemic and who is the director of the Infectious Diseases Clinic of the San Martino hospital in Genoa, stated that he wanted to see a review of the number of deaths caused by the Wuhan coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.

Italy: Family of 12 Boar Stroll Through Rome Traffic

Umpteenth sighting of animals in capital, near Gemelli Hospital

(ANSA) — ROME, JAN 12 — A family of 12 wild boar strolled through Rome traffic on Tuesday spurring a video that went viral on the Web in the latest in a slew of such sightings over the past months.

The boar were spotted wandering around near the Gemelli Hospital in the north of Rome.

Rangers said the animals were completely urbanised and were in no way afraid of pedestrians or the heavy traffic in the Italian capital.

Recently a boar family was snapped outside a kindergarten in the Montemario district in another viral video.

Such sightings have become quite common in the northern part of Rome.

The boar were found roaming on the Via Trionfale, one of Rome’s biggest streets.

On September 1 Rome’s former Mayor Virginia Raggi filed a criminal suit against the Lazio regional government over “the massive and uncontrolled” presence of wild boar in the Italian capital’s urban areas.

The boar invasion, said the 5-Star Movement (M5S) politician, was due to a failure by the regional government, which is led by Democratic Party (PD) former leader Nicola Zingaretti, to implement effective management plans for the animals.

Raggi cited a 1992 law which says regions must “provide for the control of species of wild fauna even in areas where hunting is forbidden”.

It was up to the regional government to capture the boar and let them back into the wild, she said.

Another family of wild boar were caught on CCTV cameras roaming a central Rome street in search of food recently.

The animals, which appeared to be unfazed by passing cars and wary pedestrians, were filmed in the central Via Fani, site of late Christian Democrat statesman Aldo Moro’s kidnapping in 1978.

The mother and her piglets appeared to be very hungry as they rummaged through refuse, passersby said.

Italian farmers took to the streets in front of parliament and across the country in early July to protest what they say is an “invasion” by wild boars into farmland and cities all over Italy.

Farm group Coldiretti said that during the COVID year the number of wild boar straying onto farms and roving the outskirts of Italian cities had risen by 15% to a record total of 2.3 million animals.

Coldiretti published what it called a “tragic” toll of one incident caused by the boar every 48 hours in a year of COVID.

There have been 16 victims of wild boar incidents in the past year, and 215 people injured, Coldiretti said.

The number of car crashes cause by animals on Italian provincial roads has risen by 81% over the past 10 years, the farmers’ association said.

Farmers, animal breeders and shepherds from all over Italy gathered in all of Italy’s 20 regional capitals starting in Rome where they rallied outside the parliament building, Montecitorio.

They said they want to “stop a calamity that destroys crops, attacks animals, besieges stables and causes road accidents, with concrete dangers for farmers and citizens”.

A group of young farmers dressed up in boar costumes stopped MPs and explained to them the “emergency situation” they have to face each day.

Other farmers brought fruit, salad ingredients and cereal crops that had been completely destroyed by boar.

The protesters also held up life-size cut-outs of boar to show politicians how scary an encounter with the animals can be.

They also waved banners reading “After COVID, the plague of boar”, “We sow, the boar reap”, “Let’s defend our land” and “Town and country united against wild boar”.

Many city mayors came to Montecitorio, as well as ordinary citizens worried about what they called “a full-blown emergency”.

French Migration Figures on the Rise in 2021, But Remained Lower Than Pre-Pandemic Levels

All sectors of immigration to France showed the first signs of a comeback last year after a record drop in migratory flows in 2020, statistics published on Thursday revealed.

Asylum applications, deportations and visa issuance all increased in 2021 with first asylum applications rising by 28.3 percent to 104,577 cases, according to provisional data released by the French Ministry of the Interior.

The increase was accentuated by the evacuation of thousands of Afghan nationals from Kabul after the Taliban took power in August last year.

Germany: ‘Berlin Students Demand Menstrual Products for All Genders’

Germany continues to shower the world with “innovations”. One notable one is the latest advance of the traffic-light coalition, composed of old SPD leftists and new Greens: You can finally choose your own gender.

This has not been possible for thousands of millennia, but the Scholz administration is not afraid of setting a new milestone for mankind. And whoever thought that gender was determined by genes only and cannot be changed, may not believe the good news.

Sadly in Berlin, despite the liberating free choice of gender, discrimination is still rife. A headline in the Berliner Tagesspiegel, a newspaper that is completely dedicated to the fight against the ubiquitous Nazi, drew attention to this plight. The newspaper, which is also supported by taxpayers’ money, headlined the terrible inequality: “Berlin students demand menstrual products for all genders”.

Milwaukee Archdiocese Rejects ‘Preferred Pronouns’, Against ‘Truth’

The Catholic Archdiocese of Milwaukee has issued an instruction this week banning the use of “preferred pronouns” that do not correspond to a person’s biological sex.

“Permitting the designation of a preferred pronoun, while often intended as an act of charity, instead promotes an acceptance of the separability of biological sex and ‘gender’ and thus opposes the truth of our sexual unity,” state the new guidelines, titled “Catechesis and Policy on Questions Concerning Gender Theory.”

10 thoughts on “Gates of Vienna News Feed 1/21/2022

  1. Re boars…
I am thinking… the local governments are completely taken over by people who don’t know how to get anything done… and what’s more, they don’t care. When citizens have to go to demonstrations to force them to do something about being overrun by boars, you know a line has been crossed.

  2. We criticize Canada, Austria and Australia but their politicians wouldn´t be doing what they are doing if they hadn´t political support from their citizens. Their politicians are reading polls and statistcs too.

    • alerj: Politicians live in an echo chamber. The media “interviews” the politicians and conducts self-serving polls, and then, the politicians watch and listen to themselves on TV, read the polls results, and believe every word they hear and every pre-determined poll result.

      • There, around me here in Canada, a lot of people who think that the gov’t isn’t going far /enough/.

Some real fascist-minded people, for sure.

I wish it weren’t so, and while I think that the phenomenon is partially media-driven (at the gov’t behest), it nonetheless is the case that I live surrounded by people who can so easily be turned into fascists. It’s a disturbing realization – one is happier not knowing what one lives around, frankly.

It’s one of the reasons why I’m making plans to move out of here if necessary.

        • Where are going you to? All countries from western world got mad and became totalitarian spaces. There´s no scape here in Earth

          • I’m making plans to be able to move out of the West if necessary.

Also, there are parts of the U.S. that aren’t demented (yet). They’re probably the least demented in the West (though it might not always feel that way from the inside).

        • You are right. I know a leftwing loony, sorry guy, who thinks that all unjabbed should be put into a soccer /football stsdium and the only way out is:
          1) get jabbed,
          2) leave Germany (because only sane people may live in Germany and sane people get jabbed)
          3) die

And food should be delivered by airdrop and if some unjabbed die because of airdrop (without parachute to slow down the landing of the food containers he explained gleefull!) then it is for the good of Germany.

And of course he thinks he is a democratic and anti-fascist citizen and his ideas are totally compatible with the Declaration of Human Rights.

And he thinks that Germany is for everybody who wants to live there but Nazis should be expelled – to the bottom of the Northsea. And by Nazis he means everybody to the right of the Social Democrats SPD (and even some of them he thinks are Nazis).
When I told him about the Miri Clan and muslim criminals he exploded: These are not true muslims, true Muslims behave nice and islam is something else. Islam is abused by those criminals.
In the end he admitted that those Miri Clan member should be thrown out too, They could join the Nazis on the Northsea bottom.

          • It just goes to show you that Germany needs to be run by the military and people like your friend will quickly fall into line and do what they are told.
