Poland Government Cuts Taxes on Fuel, Energy to Fight Inflation

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said Thursday that starting in December the government will cut tax on fuels and on energy and will offer bonuses to hardest hit households next year to counter inflation that has reached its highest level since 2001.

Morawiecki said that the so-called “anti-inflation shield” will cost the government some 10 billion zlotys ($2.4 billion) while additional funds will come from spending cuts.

Sitting Out the Season: A Record Number of Americans Say They Won’t be Buying Holiday Gifts This Year

Code Tenderloin, a nonprofit group serving the homeless in San Francisco, said it has about $7,000 worth of gift cards to hand out to those who need the extra financial assistance over the holidays.

In recent weeks, requests from members of the community have poured in for food, clothing and gifts. Others are merely seeking Code Tenderloin’s help to put a roof over their heads on a rainy evening. And those solicitations will likely only mount as the holiday season drags on, said Donna Hilliard, executive director at Code Tenderloin.

“While everybody is going through their day-to-day, super excited about this holiday season, we have a whole community of folks who are stressed out,” said Hilliard in a phone interview. “We’re seeing more demand this year than we’ve ever seen.”

The dynamic that Code Tenderloin witnesses playing out in San Francisco speaks to a bigger wealth gap that has only accelerated during the Covid-19 pandemic and will be especially evident over the holiday season. Predictions for holiday sales are rosy, with the National Retail Federation, the industry’s biggest trade group, calling for historic gains of 8.5% to 10.5% from year-ago levels. But the growth is largely being driven by a wealthy fraction of consumers. Meanwhile, a record-high amount of people aren’t expecting to partake in any gifting, according to one survey.

Turkish Lira Crashes to ‘Insane’ Historic Low After President Erdogan Sparks Sell-Off

Turkey’s lira crashed to a record low of 13.44 to the dollar on Tuesday, a level once unfathomable and well past what was just last week deemed the “psychological” barrier of 11 to the dollar.

“Insane where the lira is, but it’s a reflection of the insane monetary policy settings Turkey is currently operating under,” Tim Ash, senior emerging markets strategist at Bluebay Asset Management, said in a note in response to the news.

The lira was trading at 12.7272 to the greenback at 4 p.m. local time on Tuesday, and was down around 15% on the day at one point, according to Reuters.

The sell-off was triggered after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan defended his central bank’s continued contentious interest rate cuts amid rising double-digit inflation. He labeled the move as part of an “economic war of independence,” rejecting calls from investors and analysts to change course.

Inflation in Turkey is now near 20%, meaning basic goods for Turks — a population of roughly 85 million — have soared in price and their local currency salaries are severely devalued.

Biden Blasted for Jetting Off to Billionaire’s Compound for Thanksgiving as Normal Americans Struggle Through Inflation

President Joe Biden will spend his Thanksgiving holiday at a private billionaire’s compound as inflated costs continue to surge for lower and middle class Americans.

The president landed in Nantucket, Massachusetts, on Tuesday where he is expected to celebrate Thanksgiving with Carlyle Group co-founder David Rubenstein, according to Fox News. The Biden family has spent the holiday on the island for several decades, but canceled their plans in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, the price of the average Thanksgiving dinner has risen more than 14% from the previous year, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation’s annual Thanksgiving dinner cost survey. The report further shows that the average Thanksgiving dinner for six people will cost an approximate $53.31, with the cost of turkey alone skyrocketing by 24% in comparison to the previous year.

Child Becomes 6th Death in Waukesha Crash; Officer Believes Suspect Tried to ‘Hurt as Many People as Possible, ‘ Complaint Says

WAUKESHA, Wis. — An 8-year-old boy became the sixth fatality after a rampaging driver attempted to “strike and hurt as many people as possible” as they celebrated along a Christmas parade route, authorities say.

Waukesha County District Attorney Sue Opper announced the sixth death in court Tuesday as five counts of first-degree intentional homicide were filed against Darrell Brooks Jr., 39, of Milwaukee. Opper said a sixth homicide charge would also be filed.

Police say Brooks was fleeing a domestic disturbance where a knife was reported when he drove an SUV into the parade route Sunday night, injuring more than 60.

But a criminal complaint presented Brooks’ driving more intentional than might be expected of a fleeing suspect. He plowed into pedestrians despite multiple opportunities to exit the route, according to eyewitnesses cited in the court complaint.

A charge of first-degree intentional homicide carries a mandatory life prison sentence, if convicted. Other charges are likely to follow.

Opper cited Brooks’ long record of convictions and asked for $5 million bail, a request granted by court commissioner Kevin Costello.

Costello said he was disturbed by accounts from officers who said Brooks’ actions at the parade appeared intentional.

“The nature of this offense is shocking,” Costello said. “I’ve not seen anything like this in my very long career.”

The criminal complaint contains a chilling observation from one police officer who watched Brooks pass by several options to exit the parade route, and instead increase his speed:

“At this point, it was clear … that this was an intentional act to strike and hurt as many people as possible,” the complaint said…

The Town With the Highest Murder Rate in Every State

The U.S. murder rate is at its highest level in nearly two and half decades. A total of 21,570 murders were committed nationwide in 2020, up nearly 30% from the previous year — the largest annual increase on record.

The rash of deadly violence came during a tumultuous year in American history. The COVID-19 pandemic led to school closures and left millions of Americans out of work. The murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer rattled confidence in American law enforcement and sparked nationwide protests. Firearm sales soared, resulting in the proliferation of tens of millions of new guns. Here is a look at the states where gun sales are surging.

Some experts speculate that each of these factors likely played a role in the rising homicide rate. While it may be years before the precise causal factors are identified, the effects are being felt in communities across the country. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists homicide as a contributing factor in the historic 1.5-year decline in life expectancy in the U.S. last year — trailing only COVID-19 and accidental deaths, like drug overdoses, in significance.

Dozens of Ships Stuck in Artic as Ice Freezes Early, Contradicting Global Warming Claims

More than two dozen cargo vessels are stuck in Russia’s Arctic ice, waiting for ice-breakers to come to their rescue, after an inaccurate forecast from the country’s Met Office. The Telegraph has more.

Maritime traffic in the Northern Sea Route has been on the rise in recent years as rapidly warming winters reduce ice cover, and Russia invests in its Arctic ports in preparation for a further boom.

But this year several segments of the Northern Sea Route froze up about a fortnight earlier than usual, catching many ships unawares.

Alexei Likhachyov — director general of Russia’s state-owned nuclear energy company Rosatom, which manages the country’s nuclear-power fleet of ice-breakers — said on Monday that the ships included vessels sailing under the flags of Hong Kong and Marshall Islands.

He blamed the Russian Met office for a forecast that failed to predict the early ice, in comments to local media.

The Mali attacker remained down as medics rushed on the pitch to help, initially trying to revive him with smelling salts to little success.

New Zealand: Extinction Rebellion Members ‘Receive Summons’ Over Action

Four members of Extinction Rebellion Whakatu were issued a summons by police over action on Friday outside the ANZ bank at Richmond, says one of the activists.

Josie Fields said she was one of the four who faced a charge of graffiti after the action, which involved stencilling messages and issuing a “summons” to ANZ. The “summons” accused the bank of having “knowingly committed intentional damage to the environment of planet earth”, in part due to loans ANZ had made to fossil fuel companies.

“We successfully did the ANZ on Trafalgar St [in Nelson] and we were halfway through the one in Richmond when the police arrived,” Fields said.

Solomon Islands: Buildings Set on Fire as Rioters Defy Lockdown

The Solomon Islands saw anti-government riots for a second day on Thursday as thousands of protesters swarmed the capital Honiara, setting fire to buildings in the city’s Chinatown.

Eyewitnesses and local media showed images of buildings engulfed in flames and plumes of thick smoke billowing above the capital.

The unrest defied a 36-hour lockdown declared a day after protesters attempted to storm parliament and topple Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare.

The prime minister said his government was still in control.

“Today I stand before you to inform you all that our country is safe — your government is in place and continues to lead our nation,” he said, adding that those responsible “will face the full brunt of the law.”

Opposition leader Matthew Wale called on Sogavare to resign, saying frustration at controversial decisions made during his tenure had led to the violence.

“Regrettably, frustrations and pent-up anger of the people against the prime minister are spilling uncontrollably over onto the streets, where opportunists have taken advantage of the already serious and deteriorating situation,” Wale said in a statement.

Why are people rioting?

The Pacific nation has been gripped by inter-island tension which is believed to be the cause of the latest crisis.

Most of the protesters had reportedly traveled to Honiara from the island of Malaita, which is separated from the capital by water and where people have long complained about neglect by the central government.

Evangelical Church Chairwoman Supports Even More Migration to Germany

The new council chairwoman of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), Annette Kurschus, has spoken out in favor of more immigration to Germany, Junge Freiheit reported. The country is “quite able to take in more people who seek refuge here,” she told the FAZ.

At the same time, she called for “legal and safe access routes” to Europe.

“Walls and barbed wire cannot be a solution. Legal access routes would certainly not end the search for illegal escape routes, but they would be an important sign of humanity,” she emphasized.

Hungary Assures Poland of Full Support During Belarus Engineered Migration Crisis

Minister Judit Varga openly assured “Polish friends” of Hungary’s full solidarity and support when it came to the migration crisis caused by Belarus on the Polish-Belarusian border.

“We are connected by a common fate because geography and history located us on the EU’s external borders,” she said. Varga recalled that both Poland and Hungary decided to protect the European community against increasingly severe waves of migration.

“This is why we, Hungarians, also believe that the time has come for Brussels to share at least half of the cost of the Polish and Hungarian border fences. That would be fair,” she said.

‘It’s Worth the Big Risk’: Migrants Vow to Continue Trying to Reach UK After Channel Tragedy Killed 27 as Traffickers Slash Prices and French Prosecutors Say Five Arrested ‘People Smugglers’ Have ‘No Provable Link’ To Drownings

Migrants in Calais told MailOnline today that they are more determined than ever to reach the UK despite 27 people drowning crossing the Channel yesterday — as people traffickers slashed their prices to fill their deathtrap dinghies to Britain.

People claiming to be from Iran, Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan say that the chance of settling in the UK is worth facing the danger of dying getting to Dover with one declaring: ‘We don’t have a life. We want to live like you in the UK’.

Those still willing to risk their lives in rough November seas revealed that their budget boats had also burst off the coast, but they were rescued from French waters before anyone drowned. Yesterday’s tragedy has seen smugglers slash 500 euros off the price of a one-way trip to Kent.

Matteo Salvini: ‘I Refuse to Think of Substituting 10m Italians With 10m Migrants’

Exclusive: Far-right politician is in campaign mode and says he has no regrets about draconian policies he introduced when he was interior minister

Whether they’re camped outside in freezing temperatures or stranded at sea, Matteo Salvini exhibits little sympathy for the asylum seekers blocked at European borders. The Italian far-right leader, who as interior minister attempted to stop NGO rescue boats landing in Italian ports, in one case leading to criminal charges, will travel to Warsaw next month in a show of solidarity with his Polish allies who have deployed hardcore tactics to ward off thousands of refugees trying to enter from Belarus.

“I think that Europe is realising that illegal immigration is dangerous,” Salvini told the Guardian in an interview conducted before 27 people drowned attempting to cross the Channel in an inflatable boat. “So maybe this shock will be useful.”

[Comment: I’d rather not link to The Guardian, but Salvini gave an interview with that bird cage liner.]

Poland Says 230 Migrants Crossed Belarus Border by Force

Some 230 migrants forced their way through the border from Belarus with the help of Belarusian border guards but were immediately sent back across, Poland said on Thursday.

“They destroyed the fence and a group of 232 people made their way several meters into Polish territory,” border guard spokeswoman Anna Michalska told Polish news agency PAP.

“The officers instructed them to leave Polish territory and escorted them to the border demarcation,” she said, adding the incident happened late Wednesday.

Poland’s Great Gambit to Forge the Current Wave of Political Solidarity Into an EU Turning Point

The Baltic States on Sunday, the leaders of the V4 in Budapest and Croatia on Tuesday, France and Slovenia on Wednesday, Berlin on Thursday, and London on Friday — PM Mateusz Morawiecki is continuing his diplomatic offensive in Europe. The end goal of his political “tour de Europe” is becoming increasingly clear.

During a joint press conference with Croatian PM Andrej Plenkovic, Morawiecki outlined four key elements which are destabilizing the situation in Europe: the artificial migration crisis, the concentration of Russian troops near Ukraine and in Kaliningrad, high prices of energy caused by high costs of permissions for CO2 emission, and gas price manipulation by Gazprom. The last point was disinformation involving a campaign to spread fake news, also in the context of fighting the pandemic, clearly meant to divide Europe at both the state and EU levels.

Present Zeman Offers Czech Soldiers to Poland to Help Protect National Borders

On Tuesday, Czech President Milos Zeman offered Poland the deployment of Czech troops to the border with Belarus. According to him, soldiers are ready to head there immediately. Zeman wrote this in a letter to Polish President Andrzej Duda. According to Zeman, the decision to send troops for up to 60 days is on the Czech government.

In the letter, Zeman said that the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border had been caused by “the bad intentions of those who do not hesitate to abuse the fate of others for their own benefit.” Prime Minister Andrej Babis followed up with a statement that the Czech police are also ready to help.

UK: Farage Slams Border Force, Priti Patel as ‘Not Fit for Purpose’ After Boat Migrant Deaths

Brexit leader Nigel Farage has slammed the Border Force, the Home Office, and Home Secretary Priti Patel as “not fit for purpose” after at least 27 migrants drowned off the coast of France attempting to reach the United Kingdom. While conservative grandee Ann Widdecombe has said that Britain must remove the “magnets” that draw illegals to come to Britain, including the illegal economy and the often rightly-proved assumption that to arrive in the UK is to remain, with little real danger of deportation.

UK: Is it Any Wonder They’ll Risk Their Lives to Get Here? Migrants Can Expect £40 a Week Cash, Free Mobiles, Four-Star Hotels and Lawyers to Help Their Asylum Applications, Writes David Barrett

The horrific disaster in the Channel has raised stark and difficult questions about why migrants are so desperate to reach Britain.

Almost 26,000 are known to have made the hugely dangerous journey so far this year — though the true number may be higher.

But just days before this week’s tragedy, a startling statistic had emerged.

Junior minister Tom Pursglove was asked by home affairs committee chairman Yvette Cooper how many of these thousands of people had been returned to the Continent this year.

‘Five,’ came Mr Pursglove’s revealingly meek reply.

The British Prime Minister said: “An agreement with France to take back migrants who cross the Channel through this dangerous route would have an immediate and significant impact.”

In a letter to Mr Macron, he set out a five-point plan to tackle the migrant crisis following the deaths of 27 people in the English Channel when their boat sank yesterday.

UK: What Does it Take to Stop Them Risking More Children’s Lives?

Despite Channel tragedy, more families gather in Dunkirk where many will launch deadly bids to bring their boys and girls to Britain

Hundreds of desperate migrants today huddled around camp fires on the outskirts of Dunkirk, many still hoping to cross the Channel — just one day after the worst tragedy on record.

Photos from the Grand-Synthe commune on Thursday showed small children held by their parents at encampments along a disused railway line and near an overpass beside a canal.

They squatted on the muddy ground of the litter-strewn camp, and crowded around aid vans delivering essential supplies at the site which has become their new home after French police moved them on from another camp.

  1. I think it is time for David Snooze-ooki to grab his sushi knife and commit hara-kiri.
I could never stand that guy anyway. He talks down to everyone like we are a bunch of little children who know nothing.

  2. “UK: What Does it Take to Stop Them Risking More Children’s Lives?”
What kind of question is that?
Isn’t it painfully obvious they don’t care for their children? They’ll just make new ones once they arrive. By force on the local underage girls, if they have to.

  3. I know a few people who just got their two shots so they had it behind them.

Tory MPs Reportedly Sign Letters of ‘No Confidence’ Against PM

Are we very surprised? No of course not, it has been one massive shambolic mess over the last two years as the right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is doing. And still with invasion starring them in the face every day, they still waddle and poddle about not knowing seemingly which was to turn. I weep for my country, its once strong and trusted resilience against an enemy now sinks into complanceny, falls into subjugation and seems ready to accept enslavement.

  6. On another note, today we in the US celebrate Saint Nicholas’ assistant Moroccan Pete who is know here as Black Friday. He has done his best to deliver the Christmas goods despite the untiring efforts of the Washington DC grinches who would just as soon deny Christ and Christmas and condemn us to a future of dystopia misery.
Thankfully there is the Lord God in heaven Who is watching all this and is intervening so as to soften the blow that the grinches intend. So let us all give the Lord a hearty thanks and prayerfully await the celebration of His birth (conception by the Holy Spirit) which coincides with the Feast of Lights (Hanukkah, do the math MC).

  7. This guy is commenting on an embedded video from an Aboriginal tribe in Australia. What popped out to me is the claim that the Northern Territory government is using foreign police and military in addition to local police and military to force vaccinate members of their community.
