Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen Defends Biden Administration’s Plan to Surveil Americans’ Bank Accounts

According to proposals from the Biden administration, banks would be forced to provide aggregate credit and debit figures to the IRS every year, and the idea would apply to all bank accounts having at least $600 in balance or at least $600 in transactions.

We covered the controversial bank surveillance proposals in more detail here.

On Tuesday, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said she supported the plan. When asked about the new surveillance that many Americans feel is a violation of privacy, Yellen informed CNBC’s Squawk Box co-host Andrew Ross Sorkin that the “collection of information is routine.”

DARPA Accused of Sucking Up Twitter Data

Twitter has entered into a “specific” agreement with the US Defense Department’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) that allows its researchers to collect data from the social network for the purposes of two of its programs, a report alleges.

According to the Washington Times, the data in question is “shared” by Twitter users, and apparently DARPA’s programs target only non US users. That is because the Social Simulation for Evaluating Online Messaging Campaigns (SocialSim) and the Influence Campaign Awareness and Sensemaking” (INCAS) are supposed to produce algorithms capable of detecting and combating foreign influence.

Speagle was a content moderator who worked for one of Facebook’s content moderation subcontractors called Cognizant.

PUNTA GORDA, Fla.—The Florida Department of Education on Thursday sanctioned eight Florida school districts for defying the state’s ban on school mask mandates.

School districts in Brevard, Broward, Duval, Hillsborough, Leon, Miami-Dade, Orange and Palm Beach counties now face financial penalties.

Commissioner Richard Corcoran reported to the board that none of the eight counties had provided any information proving that they were in compliance with state law before Thursday’s meeting.

Homeschooling Rates Show Significant Increase in Fall 2020

SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. — Rates at which households who decided to commit to homeschooling for their family around the nation suddenly exploded in Fall 2020, according to the Census Bureau’s Household Pulse Survey released this year.

The survey, which came out in March states that this is due to the global COVID-19 pandemic which sparked new interest in homeschooling and the appeal of alternative school arrangements.

According to the report in the first week (April 23-May 5) of Phase 1 of the Household Pulse Survey, about 5.4% of U.S. households with school-aged children reported homeschooling

By fall, 11.1% of households with school-age children reported homeschooling (Sept. 30-Oct. 12). A clarification was added to the school enrollment question to make sure households were reporting true homeschooling rather than virtual learning through a public or private school.

Not all states saw as significant of an increase during that time.

Judge Rules Cloudflare Isn’t Responsible for Copyright Infringement of Users

Cloudflare is not liable for the copyright infringement practices of the websites that use its security and content-delivery services, a judge ruled.

The ruling helps Cloudflare position itself as a neutral security provider and not responsible for the content of its users.

LA City Council Votes to Expand Vaccine Passport Enforcement

The new vaccine mandate in LA was voted 11 to 2 in favor. Had it gotten one more vote, it would have come into effect immediately. However, it will be enforced 31 days after the mayor signs it into law.

Philly Fed Website Links to Pro-CRT Materials, Pushes Video That Argues ‘Race-Neutral Policies Uphold Racism’

The Philadelphia Federal Reserve website is promoting materials that endorse critical race theory and disparage opponents of the theory, as well as a video that argues against race-neutral policies.

The inclusion of these materials on the Philly Fed’s website follows a Fox News report earlier this year that revealed the Federal Reserve told its employees to avoid terms like “Founding Fathers” and “blacklist” because they are “biased terms.” The Federal Reserve was also criticized by Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., for “woke mission creep” this year.

The inclusion of these materials on the Philly Fed’s website also comes as ideas like critical race theory are at the center of politically charged discussions nationwide.

Secret Warrants Against Google Search Terms Are on the Rise

More facts are coming to light about how privately-owned giants and de-facto digital public squares with billions of users cooperate with the US government — this time in a court document that Forbes writes got accidentally unsealed.

The document is what’s known as a “keyword warrant” — only the third that has surfaced so far publicly, though their number is feared to be higher than expected — and it shows that federal government had secretly ordered Google to identify anyone who searched a name, address, or telephone number, in a 2019 Wisconsin case of a missing minor.

The “Right to Control the Commercial Use of Your Persona” Can be Used to Censor Internet Content, Court Rules

Some protections provided to internet platforms (intermediaries) by Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act (CDA) to host third party content without legal liability have been circumvented by a recent opinion of US Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

We obtained a copy of the opinion for you here.

That is because Section 230 doesn’t cover intellectual property (IP) rights — yet it is precisely this that the court considered in a case brought by a journalist who sued Facebook, Reddit, Imgur, and a porn site for a violation of her “right of publicity,” that is, “the right to control the commercial use of your persona” — and the court has decided that this right falls under IP rules.

The decision of former Facebook employee Frances Haugen to come out against the company guns blazing is a gift that keeps on giving, at least to those who are pushing for more stringent regulation of social media sites — and in favor of a particular type of moderation.

And it isn’t the kind that would enable for more free expression or less poorly justified interference by “fact-checkers” and similar unaccountable entities, but the kind that would put even more pressure to do away with content that is seen as “harmful to society.” Mostly, this refers to categories of speech that are often seemingly arbitrarily labeled as hateful, or as “misinformation”.

“So Deeply, Deeply Wrong” — Lithuanian Without Vaccine Pass Describes Life Under Medical Tyranny

As governments around the world begin instituting Covid-19 ‘passports’ which will dictate the level of participation one is afforded within society — regardless of naturally acquired immunity or actual risk to the public from the unvaccinated (considering that the majority of transmission occurs in the home), people have begun to push back against authoritarian tactics to control privileges and push vaccines.

In America, the ‘my body, my choice’ crowd has suddenly invented conditions for their own mantra.

Regardless of how well vaccination rates and lockdowns actually work.

For those wondering how life under a strict Covid pass looks, keep reading — as Lithuanian citizen Gluboco Lietuva (@gluboco) describes the hell he and his wife are currently living due to their decision not to get vaccinated.

Lithuania is a small EU country of 2.8 million people.

Lithuania introduced a Covid Pass in May. It’s called the “Opportunity Pass”. The Opportunity Pass allows you the opportunity to participate in society. Without the Opportunity Pass, you don’t have opportunity: your rights are restricted.

Austria’s Kurz Steps Down Over Corruption Probe to Save Coalition

VIENNA, Oct 9 (Reuters) — Austria’s conservative Chancellor Sebastian Kurz resigned on Saturday to pull his coalition government back from the brink of collapse after the junior party demanded his head because he has been placed under investigation on suspicion of corruption.

The move by Kurz, who denies wrongdoing, satisfied his coalition partner, the Greens, and came just three days before a special session of parliament at which they were preparing to back a motion of no-confidence that would have forced him out.

At the same time, his resignation is more a matter of form than substance in terms of policy. He plans to stay on as his party’s leader and become its top lawmaker in parliament, and he is likely to continue to call the shots in the coalition.

EU Court’s Ruling Undermines Polish Legal System

The EU court pointed out that “the order by which a court, ruling at last instance and sitting as a single judge, dismissed the action of a judge transferred against his will, must be declared null and void if the appointment of that single judge took place in clear breach of fundamental rules concerning the establishment and functioning of the judicial system concerned.”

In Massive Rebuke, Poland’s Top Court Rules That Polish Constitution Trumps EU Law

On Thursday, the Polish Constitutional Tribunal recognized the superiority of the Polish constitution over EU law. The verdict was released in response to a motion filed by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki in March which concerned the investigation of the compatibility of some EU treaty laws with the constitution. It’s the word on everyone’s lips, it seems — ‘Polexit’, or rather Poland’s withdrawal from the European Union is being discussed intensely again. This comes after Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal ruled that where EU law conflicts with Polish law, Poland’s constitution has right of way. Lebanon Left Without Power as Grid Shuts Down

Lebanon has been left without electricity, plunging the country into darkness amid a severe economic crisis.

A government official told Reuters news agency the country’s two largest power stations, Deir Ammar and Zahrani, had shut down because of a fuel shortage.

The power grid “completely stopped working at noon today” and was unlikely to restart for several days, they said.

For the past 18 months Lebanon has endured a severe economic crisis which has got worse amid fuel shortages.

That crisis has left half its population in poverty, crippled its currency and sparked major demonstrations against politicians.

Singapore’s “Foreign Interference Law” Is Another Excuse to Censor

Singapore’s lawmakers passed a “foreign interference law” that critics and rights groups are worried will suppress public debate in a country where there is already little room for dissent.

The government argues the law is needed since the city-state is particularly vulnerable to foreign interference.

On Monday, the Singapore Parliament passed the Foreign Interference Countermeasures Act (FICA). Under the law, social media platforms and internet service providers could be compelled to provide user information, delete content, or remove apps spreading content that the government deems hostile.

Australian PM Wants Social Media Platforms to be Held Responsible for Anonymous Users

Australia keeps pressing on with its efforts to redefine the role and responsibility of internet service providers, specifically social media sites, by “making them liable for their users,” that is, user generated, third party content.

This is already happening at the state level in this country, but as if to cement the likelihood of it being the direction and stance Australia intends to take going forward, the same message is now being heard from federal authorities.

A “coward’s palace” is how Prime Minister Scott Morrison chose to speak about social networks and their “anonymous” users yesterday, who he said used that — presumed — anonymity to behave in cowardly ways by leaving comments that are bullying and vilifying as well as defaming people’s character.

Homeschool Registrations Rising in Australia, Alternative Education Advocates Say Mainstream Schools Need a Shake-Up

Aria Blundell’s kitchen table has been her school desk for the past few months.

The six-year-old is learning from home, but not because her school has switched to home learning — it is because her parents have switched from mainstream schooling to home education.

“I actually think she gets more out of an hour or two at home a day, one-on-one with me, than she would out of a week at school,” Aria’s mum, Sabrina Blundell, said.

The Blundells are among thousands of Australian families who have left the mainstream school system in the past 18 months.

Homeschooling is understood to be the fastest-growing education sector and alternative school advocates say it shows mainstream schooling needs a shake-up.

Ociepa confirmed that decisions to build a permanent barrier have been made but the specifics are still being discussed. In addition to the wall itself, the new infrastructure is also meant to be equipped with a modern system of cameras and sensors.

..” The stereotypes have a hard life. If it is very frowned upon to tell inconvenient truths about our local delinquency problems, our dilapidated HLM bars, and other emanations of the multicultural masquerade, it is all the more liberating for the average French to spit its venom on Eastern country. Understand it: he is ordered to lie down in front of political correctness all day, so when he can get out all that bile accumulated in the back of his throat, he has a great time. Romanians are therefore a people of half-Roma who play the violin in the subway (all without exception), the Russians are alcoholics who shoot Kalashnikov on adulterated vodka bottles, and Polish is a kind of Silesian peasant. with a rosary which falls to his knees.

Me, the clichés, it does not bother me. I’m a straight guy, comfortable with the reality principle that says “if you want to achieve your goal, you have to have your eyes in the face of the holes”. It’s a kind of mental hygiene, because looking away is the best way to make a situation worse. What bothers me is that we are comfortable with the clichés on the East, but not with the clichés on the South, and when I speak of the South, I mean the southern hemisphere, in which it will soon be necessary to include France, the old Empire which is getting worse.

Alcoholism in Poland (very exaggerated, in reality) is a small a problem of the country, and I would be tempted to say that it is the only one. Apart from that, no delinquency, no incivility, no rear wheel and burnt cars, firefighters’ caillassages, innocent beatings or head cut off..
Everything works, the country is clean because people’s brains are clean, their eyes are in the holes and this allows them to achieve many of their goals. The latest, for example: repelling an invasion orchestrated in a quasi-military manner by Belarus, this is an objective they have achieved. Here is one, very Franco-French cliché: “An army with guns, 4x4s and thermal cameras cannot stop migrants in down jackets!”. Well it can and does here . When we want we can.

It is fascinating to see how the inertia of a cliché can endure, even when it has become utterly false. Many Poles believe that life in France is heavenly and that the average French person is a cultivated gentleman.
We enjoy the privilege of our ancestors, but if a few French people still fit this description, they have probably already fled the country, where they are surviving painfully. The European soul, which rises to the highest when material conditions allow it, is much more in present-day Poland than in the perishing hexagon; excellent economic situation, notable artistic production, futile unemployment, exemplary growth, intact vitality.

But with these favorable material conditions, the conceptual madness of our time also progresses: zealous, ethereal, idealistic, enlightened leftism. If marginal alcohol is the main problem in Poland, then proliferating by West leftism is its main competitor here. As for attributing to the first the causes of the second … It could indeed be that it manifests itself in the Polish electorate of the left, victim of intrauterine damage which would have attacked the brain: they seem very concerned about to tip the country into the multicultural hell that we have known so well. And that, alas, is not a cliché.

As you will have understood, it is time for the clocks to be set, for the French to understand that they are in a rat hole where it is humiliating to live, and for the Poles to realize that they have a countries where all horizons are possible.
    Paul Bartholomew …PHD esque..
Because heavy anglo-saxon censorship on this platform ,i/m not sure my and my French friend commentaries may apeare here..I will post it also on my Polish blog..

    • Re: East “european” in your descriptions..

For the record, I never refer to Poland as “Eastern European”. Poland is Central European, as are Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, and Austria.

Eastern Europe is comprised of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Belarus, and possibly Moldova.

I’m not sure how to classify Romania and Bulgaria, since they’re not in the Balkans proper.

      • No you never did..You are intellectually honest.

We like the fact that you can go into any major Eastern city and not be assaulted/raped or murdered by 3rd worlders.

  4. 12 EU countries demanding from EC to finance permanent barier on outside EU borders
    .statement :
..” Anti-migrant barriers: 12 EU countries ask Brussels to finance their installation at the borders

After Donald Trump’s wall, fences to stop the arrivals of migrants. In a joint letter, the Interior Ministers of Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland and Slovakia have addressed a request to Brussels for funding to build barriers at their borders. Objective: to prevent migrants from entering their soil.

Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson, addressee of the letter, replied that countries had “the possibility and the right to build fences”. ” I am not against. But as to whether we should use the European funds which are limited, to finance the construction of fences instead of other equally important things, that is another question, ”she said in a statement. press conference at the end of a meeting of interior ministers in Luxembourg. She judged that “it was not really a good idea to make new proposals” while those of the Pact on migration and asylum – a reform project proposed by the Commission which comes up against divisions between Member States – were always “on the table”.

A barrier “which serves the interests of the whole of the EU”
Ministers from the twelve countries say that “a physical barrier appears to be an effective border protection measure, which serves the interests of the whole of the EU, not just the member states on the front line”.
