Gates of Vienna News Feed 9/22/2021

A third day of protests in Melbourne saw thousands of people opposed to the vaccine mandate take to the streets. The protesters eventually ended up at the Shrine of Remembrance, Melbourne’s major war memorial, where police fired rubber bullets at them. The authorities issued a no-fly order in the area, preventing media helicopters from doing live broadcasts of the demonstrations. A fourth day of protests is now underway.

In other news, a spokesman for Black Lives Matter in New York City said that vaccine passports are being used to propagate racism.

The Prosperity of Czechia and Other Eastern European Countries is Unparalleled, Writes the Financial Times

Czechia is the top country in Eastern Europe when it comes to economic growth, which has enabled the country to overtake Portugal and Spain and reach parity with Italy, the Financial Times reports. However, Czechia may fall into the same debt traps that have plagued other so-called success stories.

The economic rise of the Czech Republic and other Eastern European countries is a “forgotten success”, the greatest since the East Asian economic miracle of the 1990s, according to Ruchir Sharma, manager at the Morgan Stanley investment bank, who mentioned Czechia first among the leaders of the globally successful region.

Apple to Embrace Vaccine Passports

In the near future, users will be able to provide proof of vaccination using Apple Wallet. The tech giant claims the vaccination cards and records are stored securely and it would not have access, commenting only on the privacy aspects and ignoring the civil liberties concerns.

The feature will be released in a future iOS update. The vaccine cards future will use the international SMART Health Cards standard, which is already being used in several vaccine certification systems. Users will sign the vaccine card with a private key, then create a public key that others can use to verify your status.

On the latest iOS version, iOS 15, users can store verifiable test results and vaccination records in the Health app.

Climate Activists Dumped a House in the Tidal Basin

As the sun glowed through the columns of the Jefferson Memorial around 7:15 AM Wednesday, a man in a racing wetsuit began to churn the murky waters of the Tidal Basin with his kicks as he pushed a model of a sunken row house further into the basin. Constructed out of wood and floating on pontoons, the hollow house was a warning from climate activists with Extinction Rebellion DC of what the city might face should unchecked climate change continue to contribute to rising sea levels.

Though around a dozen activists were gathered for the demonstration, the row house swimmer was doing the brunt of the grunt work, treading water and guiding the structure around the basin for almost an hour. According to the group’s spokesperson, they had a motor on hand they could have used to propel the craft, but chose to go with manpower to minimize fossil fuel emissions.

The basin once served as a swimming hole for Washingtonians 100 years ago, but natation is now prohibited due to high levels of bacteria after rainstorms. The Extinction Rebellion spokesperson wasn’t too concerned about the group’s waterlogged point person, saying as long as he wasn’t swallowing the water he would be fine. Washingtonian’s team was a bit more concerned, as the individual in question was spitting out water and failed to keep his protein bar out of the murk during a mid-demonstration aquatic snack break.

After an hour of paddling, the swimmer abandoned the structure in the middle of the basin and emerged, victorious, in a flooded area of the basin. The group turned to leave without retrieving the house, as they knew US Park Police would remove the structure. Leaving the remains of their activism behind them seems to have become Extinction Rebellion’s calling card. This is the same group that dumped a pile of manure near the White House this spring that was cleaned up by city workers(members of the group say they intended to come back to clean up that mess, but that the city got to it first).

The celebration was short-lived, though, as no sooner did the swimmer exit the water than two Park Police officers approached and slapped him with cuffs. The swimmer went peacefully; police did not share what the individual was being charged with at the scene, and have yet to respond with comment on the matter.

Florida Makes Quarantine Optional for Exposed Students

A day after assuming his job, Florida’s newly appointed surgeon general on Wednesday signed new rules allowing parents to decide whether their children should quarantine or stay in school after being exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.

The guidelines signed by Dr. Joseph Ladapo eliminate previous rules requiring students to quarantine for at least four days off campus if they’ve been exposed. Under the new rules, students who have been exposed can continue attending classes in person “without restrictions or disparate treatment,” provided they are asymptomatic. They can also quarantine, but no longer than seven days, provided they do not get sick.

“Quarantining healthy students is incredibly damaging for their educational advancement,” Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis said Wednesday at a news conference in Kissimmee. “It’s also disruptive for families. We are going to be following a symptoms-based approach.”

Republicans Advance Bill Banning Critical Race Theory in Schools

A Republican-led Assembly committee on Wednesday advanced a bill that would prohibit public schools from teaching students and training employees about concepts such as systemic racism and implicit bias.

The measure, which passed along party lines with the committee’s Democratic members opposed, began circulating in the state Legislature this summer amid a nationwide push among conservatives to ban the teaching of critical race theory, which argues that racism is an inherent feature of the nation’s social structures and policies. While the bill could come before the Republican-led Legislature as soon as next week, it’s almost certain to be vetoed by Democratic Gov. Tony Evers, a former state schools superintendent.

Did the Start-Up People’s Party Cost Conservatives the Election in Canada?

by Kennedy Hall

[…]

Overall, it can be argued that 25 Conservative seats were lost due to the failure of Erin O’Toole’s party to speak to the desires of PPC voters, [ my emphasis ] namely that Canada has no place for vaccine passports and indefinite lockdowns. In addition, who knows how many centrist voters stayed with the Liberals simply because O’Toole offered nothing that was substantially different than his opponent.

Perhaps the Conservative Party of Canada will take note of what took place and might even attempt being … conservative for the next election.

Eco-Activists Insulate Britain Should be Locked Up, Says Blue Collar Tory MP

Conservative MP Ben Bradley has said that eco-activists Insulate Britain “want locking up” for disrupting traffic on the M25, which was blamed for the avoidable serious injury of an elderly woman suffering from a stroke.

LBC radio heard over the weekend the harrowing story of a son who watched his 74-year-old mother deteriorate while they were stuck in traffic for six hours on their way to hospital after she had suffered a stroke. Insulate Britain protests for better home insulation by blocking major roads, including Britain’s busiest motorway, the M25.

Ben Bradley, the MP for Mansfield in the East Midlands of England who is the chairman of the Blue Collar Conservatism group, said that while people have a right to protest, they do not have the right to interfere with the everyday lives of citizens, particularly when putting people’s lives as risk such as the now-paralysed 74-year-old woman, adding that Extinction Rebellion protests in London have likewise blocked ambulances from getting to St Thomas’ Hospital.

Pope Francis: EWTN’s Criticism of Me is ‘The Work of the Devil’

Remote Working is an Opportunity for Disadvantaged Areas Says New Study

But ESPON researchers highlight the risks of increased inequality too

(By Alessandra Briganti) (ANSA) — BRUSSELS, SEP 20 — Remote working is here to stay and it will bring with it new development opportunities for disadvantaged areas, but also the risk of greater socio-economic and regional inequality, according to a new study.

So the job of cohesion policy in the post-pandemic period will be to address the challenges linked to accelerating the process of digitalization, said a working paper on migratory flows and the knowledge economy conducted by the ESPON research programme, which specializes in EU regional studies.

The pandemic had a negative impact on consumption and production levels and models all over the world.

European cities and regions have had to address the shock of the health crisis and its consequences precisely when digitalization, the growth of the knowledge economy, demographic changes and globalization were causing changes to the labour market.

On the other hand, the pandemic will have long-term implications for innovation, accelerating the digital transition and reinforcing the provision of digital services.

According to the researchers, these changes will continue to shape the way people live and work because remote working offers greater flexibility and autonomy, a better balance between work and private life and less time spent commuting.

This could be an advantage for peripheral areas, leading to a better balanced distribution of employment and of the population.

There is evidence to suggest this is the case.

The researchers wrote that a significant movement of residents from densely populated counties to less populated ones has been registered in the United States.

In addition to boosting the appeal of non-urban life, remote working could also stimulate demand for better telecommunications infrastructure and co-working spaces.

Businesses, especially auxiliary ones, may decide to leave big cities and migrate to residential areas.

In short, it is an opportunity that requires policies designed to boost the attractiveness of less developed areas.

For example, the central role of digital infrastructure in making it possible to work and study from home was shown during the pandemic.

And yet 41% of homes in rural areas are not covered by broad band and this could be the reason why remote working tends to be more concentrated in cities, according to the researchers.

The researchers concluded that, in order to combat the emergence of new forms of social and labour inequality, European and national political strategies must address the social implications of widespread use of remote working, and seek to improve the opportunities offered by these forms of labour while increasing the social inclusion of groups of people and areas that are currently marginalized.

UK Lockdown Will Result in 10,000 Unnecessary Cancer Deaths: Study

A lack of face-to-face doctor visits in Britain since the beginning of the Chinese coronavirus pandemic is likely to result in 10,000 unnecessary deaths from cancer, a report from the University College London (UCL) has found.

Since the first lockdown in March of last year, an estimated 40,000 people were referred to emergency care for cancer late, which the report said will “conservatively” see 10,000 Britons die “significantly earlier” than under normal circumstances, with the possibility of deaths being “several times higher” in a worst-case scenario.

UK: COVID Tickets Worth £140,000 Brought Fines of £780 in Northamptonshire

Up to £140,000-worth of Covid fines issued by Northamptonshire Police resulted in just £780 being paid by two offenders.

Three more cases against people issued with £10,000 Fixed Penalty Notices in the county for breaching lockdown regulations were halted earlier this month.

The Force initially claimed to have issued 14 tickets for illegal mass gatherings following the introduction of legislation by home secretary Priti Patel last August with Supt Natalee Wignall saying the fines sent out a “very strong message to anyone thinking of holding such events.”

Only six of those were processed, however, according to data issued by the National Police Chiefs’ Council — and just two resulted in successful prosecutions with magistrates issuing fines of £660 and £120.

The victims said the police did not register a case as the attackers were related to a local parliamentarian who belonged to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party.

Rajesh Jaipal | Islamabad | HENB | Sept 21, 2021:: A Hindu family was allegedly held hostage and brutally tortured for “violating the sanctity” of a mosque when they tried to fetch drinking water from the place of worship in Pakistan’s Punjab province, a media report said on Monday.

As the family was returning home after unloading the cotton, the landlords held them hostage at their dera (outhouse) and tortured them again for “violating the sanctity” of the mosque, the report said.

“I thought the Chinese Government would take this opportunity to spread the virus during the Military Games, as many foreigners would show up there,” Jingsheng told The Mail Australia.

Report: Wuhan Lab Requested Funding From DARPA to Make Chimeric Viruses, Genetically Alter Coronaviruses to Make Them More Infectious to Humans

A bombshell report has concluded that scientists at the Wuhan Institute of Virology and their affiliated partners attempted to secure $14 million in funding from the Pentagon’s scientific arm DARPA to genetically alter viruses, including bat coronaviruses, and make them more infectious to humans, just eighteen months prior to the subsequent outbreak and pandemic.

The London Telegraph reports the findings revealed by Drastic, a web-based investigations team set up by scientists from across the world to look into the origins of Covid-19.

The documents they obtained, confirmed as genuine by former US government officials, show that DARPA turned down the request, saying the plans for yet more gain of function research were TOO DANGEROUS to the human population.

The Telegraph notes that the documents reveal the Wuhan scientists “submitted plans to release skin-penetrating nanoparticles containing ‘novel chimeric spike proteins’ of bat coronaviruses into cave bats in Yunnan, China.”

Australian Media Condemns Police Over Blackout on Protest Coverage

The police in the Australian state of Victoria banned media organizations from taking aerial footage of the massive ongoing protests against vaccination passport mandates, in a major blow to the freedom of the press.

News organizations would have to apply to be able to fly and publish helicopter footage, and will not be allowed to broadcast live.

On Wednesday, Victoria police banned aircraft from flying in the inner city at heights above 2500 feet without approval. The restriction meant news organizations could not use helicopters to capture footage of the ongoing protests. Police claimed protesters were using the live aerial footage to learn the location of officers.

Stand-Off at Shrine Ends in Cloud of Tear Gas and Hail of Police Rounds

Melbourne endured a third day of anti-vaccine anarchy on Wednesday as protesters chanted “freedom” on the steps of one of the city’s most sacred landmarks, the Shrine of Remembrance, only to be blasted off late in the afternoon by police firing non-lethal rounds.

The Shrine, which was built in 1934 and commemorates those who served and died in Australia’s wars, was left with its lawns littered with rubbish, including a full can of chickpeas, tear gas canisters and leftover “bean” rounds. One decorated veteran stood by with his head in his hands.

The hours-long stand-off between police and several hundred protesters came at the end of another meandering march through the city. Once the demonstrators had occupied the steps of the Shrine and were sitting around the eternal flame, they chanted a mix of anti-vaccine slogans and invective at Premier Daniel Andrews, as well as singing the national anthem and holding a minute’s silence for people who had died by suicide during the pandemic. At one stage they took a knee in front of police officers…

Jamaica: Protestors Cry Foul After Arrest of UIC President, Others

KINGSTON, Jamaica — President of the United Independent Congress (UIC), Joseph Patterson was among several persons arrested during a public march organised by the political party in downtown Kingston on Wednesday.

After Patterson’s arrest, scores of disgruntled protestors marched toward the Kingston Central Police Division Headquarters demanding that he be released.

Amid shouts of “Freedom!” and “Free Patterson!” the protestors, which included members from the UIC party and the Rastafarian and Christian communities, alleged that the arrests were unlawful and a violation of their rights as citizens.

“I think it was unjust. I think all of this was to be expected, and now we see how far and deep the corruption and injustice goes,” one UIC member, Aretha Williams told OBSERVER ONLINE.

The protestors took to the streets for the planned march on to Gordon House despite the police warning that the activity would be in breach of the Disaster Risk Management Act (DRMA). They were demonstrating against mandatory COVID-19 vaccines — despite no such mandates being given by the Jamaican government — and demanding the resignation of all 63 members of parliament.

“We are not saying no to a vaccine, we are saying no the direction of making it mandatory. We have come in our numbers to not so much speak out against the vaccine, because we all have gotten vaccines as children,” Williams said.

Texas Law Enforcement Creates ‘Steel Barrier’ of Vehicles at Southern Border to Block Migrants

The crisis at the southern border shows no signs of letting up, prompting law enforcement to come up with creative solutions. At a Tuesday press conference, Texas Governor Greg Abbott discussed the crisis, which has boiled over in the town of Del Rio.

“One day,” Gov. Abbott began, “countless people were coming across the border, then the very same day the Texas Department of Public Safety put up all these DPS vehicles, and suddenly, in an instant, people stopped crossing the border in this location.” The vehicles, he continued, go on for miles, and have essentially created a “steel barrier” through which migrants could not cross.

Texas Lawmakers Receive Credible Threat of Violence Tied to Vote for New Abortion Law

AUSTIN — The Texas Department of Public Safety on Wednesday confirmed that a credible threat had been made toward members of the Texas Legislature saying it does “not discuss details of ongoing threats and investigations.”
