130 Countries Agree to 15 Percent Global Tax Rate

One hundred and thirty countries, including China and India, have agreed to impose a uniform minimum 15 percent global corporate tax, but EU members Hungary and Ireland are still among those opting out, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) said on Thursday.

“This is a historic day for economic diplomacy,” U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said. The planned tax imposed on large technology companies has been a source of friction between the United States and other countries.

The OECD has stated that the current decision is expected to generate around $150 billion in tax revenue per year. However, the Paris-based organization confirmed that Ireland and Hungary, both countries with low corporate taxes (12.5 percent in Ireland and 9 percent in Hungary), have not joined the convention.

Reports say that Xfinity, an ISP and a Comcast conglomerate’s subsidiary in the US, is suspending internet access for users accused of downloading allegedly copyright infringing torrent files — seemingly just to be on the safe side of copyright holders’ wrath, and because, under the DMCA — it can.

Beijing ‘Eating Up’ Siberia

by Vladimir Rozanskij

A documentary about the colonization of the Russian Far East by Chinese migrants. They do big business in a sparsely populated area with an unregulated market. Facial recognition “made in China” used to suppress dissent. The Kremlin accepts the growing Chinese presence to overcome the pandemic crisis

Moscow (AsiaNews) — The increasingly significant Chinese presence in Siberia, also thanks to recent agreements between Beijing and the Kremlin, is the focus of a documentary by journalist Pavel Afonasev. Titled “Heavenly Siberia” it was presented on June 23 and follows the lives of Chinese immigrants living in the territory of the Russian Federation, especially in its Asian part.

In a meeting in March with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, Russian Foreign Minister Sergej Lavrov signed the joint statement “On some issues of global administration in contemporary conditions”. The document states that human rights must be defended “respecting national characteristics”. On June 16, the two governments agreed to build a lunar station together: work will begin in 2026 and finish in 2035.

Following these and other joint declarations, the inhabitants of Siberia and the Russian Far East speak more and more often of the “expansion” of the Chinese in their territory: settlers from China are looking for better economic conditions or to strengthen their businesses already started. Many migrants from China start over in Russia from scratch; they occupy areas to be deforested and make them arable. To obtain more intensive harvests, they make extensive use of chemicals. In general, the Chinese take away large sectors of the private and public economy from the Russians.

Afonasev’s film tries to show the life of the Chinese in Russia without indulging in controversy and prejudice. One of the interviewees, Wang Tsynbin, is the owner of one of the most popular restaurants in Novosibirsk: the “Tsyndao”, named after his hometown. Wang says he arrived in 1995, and began by trading in fabrics, before moving on to the sale of Chinese noodles and fruit:

“In China I was a low-level employee, Russia opened up new perspectives for me, a large market without many rules. Amid ups and downs I managed to make a lot of money”. After opening a number of restaurants, Wang was forced to close one due to the pandemic, but he plans to make up for it soon…

Italy Afghanistan Mission Ends

Last soldier comes home, commitment to continue

(ANSA) — ROME, JUN 30 — Italy’s mission to Afghanistan officially ended Tuesday night when the last member of the contingent returned home from the Asian country, but Rome’s commitment will continue in other forms, Defence Minister Lorenzo Guerini said Wednesday.

“But the commitment of the international community, Italy first, for Afghanistan does not end here but will continue in other forms, starting from the reinforcement of development cooperation (aid) and support for the Afghan republican institutions”.

Guerini last week paid tribute to the members of the Italian armed services who took part in the coalition missions in Afghanistan, including 53 who lost their lives.

“I thank the 723 Italians who were injured and the 53 victims who lost their lives for the Republic to bring stability and peace to Afghanistan,” Guerini said in the Senate as he reported on the withdrawal of Italian troops from the Asian country.

“This ultimate sacrifice must not be in vain and the memory of them will be indelible.

“It is not easy to summarize 20 years of effort.

“Over 50,000 men and women were involved over these 20 years and they contributed to giving lustre to our country.

“The Atlantic Alliance will continue with its commitment to ensure that Afghanistan does not become a paradise for terrorism and to combat the narrative of abandonment”.

VILNIUS (Reuters) — European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Friday pledged support for Lithuania, which is experiencing a quickly growing flow of migrants though its 679-kilometre border with Belarus.

The Lithuanian government declared a country-wide emergency on Friday as 150 migrants crossed the border illegally in the 24 hours ended Friday morning, more than had entered annually in any of the three preceding years.

“Here we see indeed a pattern, a politically motivated pattern. And European Commission and the European Union stand by your side in these difficult times”, said von der Leyen in Vilnius at a joint press conference with country’s president and the prime minister.

UK: Supposedly Tough New Immigration Points System to Make it Easier for Foreigners to Stay as Non-Skilled Workers

The Boris Johnson administration’s supposedly tough new “points-based immigration system” will make it even easier for foreign students to stay in Britain as unskilled workers, Home Secretary Priti Patel has announced.

“International students make an invaluable social, cultural, and economic contribution to UK campuses and the wider society. During the pandemic, students have continued to choose our world-leading colleges and universities, knowing it will bring them lifelong benefits, even as competitors in the global market closed their borders to students from overseas,” Patel wrote in an article for The Telegraph, appearing to boast about the relatively lax approach to border control which the Tories have adopted throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

Swimming Caps for Natural Black Hair Ruled Out of Olympic Games

International Swimming Federation rejects use of Soul Cap, saying it does not ‘fit the natural form of the head’

Swimming caps designed for natural black hair created by a black-owned brand will not be allowed at the Olympics.

The hats, made by Soul Cap, which previously partnered with Alice Dearing, who last week qualified to become the first black female swimmer to represent Team GB at the Olympics, have been rejected by the International Swimming Federation (Fina).

The body said the caps did not fit “the natural form of the head” and to their “best knowledge the athletes competing at the international events never used, neither require … caps of such size and configuration”.

Danielle Obe, the founding member of the Black Swimming Association, told the Guardian the ruling underlined the inherent systemic and institutional inequalities around the sport. “We believe that it confirms a lack of diversity in (the sport),” she said. “Aquatic swimming must do better.”…
