Gates of Vienna News Feed 6/15/2021

Irate parents in Franklin County, Virginia (famous for being “the wettest county in the world”) mobbed a school board meeting to demand an end to the mask mandate in schools, and insist that critical race theory never be taught in classrooms. In contrast, education officials in Loudoun County seem to think critical race theory is just fine.

In other news, the number of illegal migrants that have crossed the English Channel to the UK so far this year has surpassed 5,000.

Alabama Lawmaker Moves to Ban Critical Race Theory

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WPMI) — State educators and lawmakers will be tackling the hot button issue of critical race theory. Critical race theorists believe the law and social systems in our country are inherently racist and oppress people of color. It’s not currently in the curriculum for Alabama public schools, and one Mobile lawmaker is introducing legislation to keep it that way.

Commentators Urge School Board to Reject ‘Critical Race Theory’

The divisive issue of critical race theory reemerged Monday, June 14, at a meeting of the Brainerd School Board.

During a period for public comment, concerned community members — including local activist Doug Kern, who attended the meeting with his wife, former board member Sue Kern — criticized and denounced the idea of critical race theory, claiming it’s a societal scourge sweeping America and weaseling its way into the Brainerd School District. These commentators described critical race theory as “demonic” and “communist” at varying turns and warned board members they would hold them accountable to preserve a patriotic, more traditional curriculum for students.

Federal Judge Blocks Biden Moratorium on New Oil, Gas Leases

A Louisiana federal judge issued an order lifting President Biden’s moratorium on new oil and gas leases on federal land Tuesday, ruling that the White House did not give any “rational explanation” for implementing the pause.

US District Judge Terry Doughty sided with 13 states in granting a preliminary injunction that applies nationwide. The states challenging the moratorium were Louisiana, Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah and West Virginia.

Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry hailed Doughty’s ruling as “a victory not only for the rule of law, but also for the thousands of workers who produce affordable energy for Americans.”

Foam Set to be Sprayed Onto Burning Illinois Chemical Plant

ROCKTON, Ill. (AP) — Officials say a private firefighting company from Louisiana was expected to begin pumping fire-suppressing foam onto the still-burning ruins of a northern Illinois chemical plant, a day after it was rocked by an explosion and massive fires. Kirk Wilson, chief of the Rockton Fire Department, said Tuesday that before crews with Holden, Louisiana-based US Fire Pump can begin pumping that foam onto fires at the Chemtool Inc. plant near Rockton, absorbent booms must be installed along the nearby Rock River. He says those are needed to prevent contaminants from entering the river, which the village about 95 miles northwest of Chicago near the Wisconsin border relies on as a source of drinking water. Monday’s explosion and fires prompted evacuations near the plant.

Haley Stevens Gets Called ‘A Coward’ At Town Hall After Declining to Take a Stance on Critical Race Theory

Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Mich., faced intense backlash at a recent town hall meeting after she refused to take a stance on critical race theory, the highly controversial ideology that many blame for certain racial materials in schools.

Footage obtained by Fox News showed Stevens being asked about CRT during a June 10 town hall in Northville, Michigan. She responded: “As a member of the Education and Labor Committee, what I want to do is continue to support our schools to be able to educate the next generation.”

At that point, people started talking over her and a man seemed to ask for her position on CRT. She eventually told the crowd that she didn’t think CRT was a congressional issue. “I personally don’t think this is a congressional issue … so I am not taking a position on that,” she said.

Ohio Lawmakers Consider Banning Critical Race Theory in Schools

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — The debate over critical race theory has reached the Ohio Statehouse.

A committee held hearings Tuesday on House Bill 322, which would prohibit critical race theory in Ohio’s K-12 curriculum. As introduced by Rep. Don Jones (R-Freeport), the bill would ban the teaching of these concepts:

  • One race or sex is inherently superior to another
  • An individual is inherently racist, sexist or oppressive, whether consciously or unconsciously
  • An individual should be discriminated against because of their race
  • An individual’s moral standing or worth is necessarily determined by race or sex
  • An individual bears responsibility for actions committed in the past by other members of the same race or sex
  • The advent of slavery constituted the true founding of the United States
  • That slavery and racism are anything other than deviations from, betrayals of or failures to live up to the authentic founding principles of the United States, which include liberty and equality

Protesters Who Painted Salt Lake City Streets, Smashed Windows Take Plea Deal, Must Pay $100K

They are accused of painting the street red and smashing windows at the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office a year ago, part of intense protests over the police shooting of Bernardo Palacios-Carbajal.

Some of them faced felony charges that could have put them in prison for life.

And on Tuesday, four of the nine protesters charged took a plea deal, admitting to much lesser crimes, which will be dismissed in 12 months if they aren’t accused of additional crimes and meet other conditions.

The deal — similar to what four others have already pleaded to — requires them to pay restitution for what took place on July 9, 2020, after District Attorney Sim Gill said two officers were legally justified in shooting and killing 22-year-old Palacios-Carbajal.

Rep. Bronna Kahle Welcomes Court Ruling on Unlock Michigan Petition Signatures

The Republican-controlled Michigan Legislature can repeal a law that was the backbone of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s coronavirus orders, without her interference, after a unanimous decision Friday from the Michigan Supreme Court.

The order to certify the ballot measure came after two Democrats on the Board of State Canvassers opposed ratifying it in April, despite a finding from the elections bureau that enough signatures — 460,000 — had been collected. The justices, four Democrats and three Republicans, said the panel “has a clear legal duty to certify the petition.”

Supreme Court Rules Some Prisoners Cannot Argue for Reduced Sentences Under First Step Act

The Supreme Court’s decision restricting the use of a landmark 2018 drug reform law landed like an anvil Monday morning at the Decarceration Collective, a Chicago law firm that seeks to free people serving life sentences for federal drug crimes.

The unanimous ruling said the law — which has been used to cut the sentences of thousands of federal drug offenders, including many accused of handling large amounts of crack cocaine — couldn’t be used to reduce the sentences of people convicted of possessing small amounts of crack. The court’s ruling came over the objections of the law’s authors, who said they intended to help those low-level offenders, and the Biden administration, whose Justice Department declined to argue for the narrow interpretation of the law in court.

Texas “Critical Race Theory” Bill Limiting Teaching of Current Events Signed Into Law

Gov. Greg Abbott has signed the controversial bill that prescribes how Texas teachers can talk about current events and America’s history of racism in the classroom, according to Texas Legislature Online. His signature makes Texas one of a handful of states across the country that have passed such legislation, which aims to ban the teaching of “critical race theory” in K-12 public school classrooms.

Critical race theory is an academic term that studies how race and racism have impacted social and local structures in the United States. Over the past year, GOP leaders have decried its teaching in public schools, pointing to limited examples in various school districts across the state. In 2020, former President Donald Trump had banned federal employees from training that discusses “critical race theory” or “white privilege,” calling it propaganda.

Virginia County Officials Acknowledge Critical Race Theory Influences, Aligns With Their Work

Fox News reported on Monday that Terry McAuliffe, the Virginia Democratic nominee for governor, downplayed concerns about critical race theory in education, describing them as a “right-wing conspiracy.”

But recent revelations from Loudoun County, Va. — perhaps the most high-profile battleground for CRT — shows that the hotly debated ideology plays at least some role in the school district’s decision-making.

Irish Police to Get New Powers to Access Mobile Phones

In Ireland, the police (Gardai) will soon have new, expanded powers that will include the right to access people’s phones, as a new criminal offense is being introduced into the country’s judicial system: refusal to surrender password.

Once the new legislation, the Garda Siochana (Powers) Bill, comes into force, it will criminalize refusal to hand over a phone passport.

Those who do that can be sent to prison for up to five years and ordered to pay a fine of up to 30,000 euros. The maximum penalties apply to what will be considered the most serious cases, where indictment has been raised and trial conducted before a judge and jury. But even those who refuse to give police access to their phones in what will be treated as less serious cases will also face prosecution, and if found guilty, pay a fine of up to 5,000 euros and spend up to a year in prison.

But this promise to finally offer a different perspective on the news has attracted the attention of cancel groups such as Stop Funding Hate — a group that pressures advertisers into pulling their support from publications that it subjectively deems to be spreading “hate and division.”

Senior MP Jacob Rees-Mogg defended England fans who booed players ‘taking a knee’, asserting that the response is a backlash against “wokeness” and not an expression of racism.

Some fans once again booed the national team as players took a knee before the Euro 2020 game with Croatia on Sunday, while Croatia players remained standing.

The football establishment and pundits have tried to characterize the booing as racist, claiming that taking a knee isn’t a political statement, despite it being precisely that.

Pakistan’s Khan Urges Strict Action Against Online ‘Hate, ‘ Says it’s the Root Cause of ‘Islamophobia’

“Islamophobia” is a propaganda term designed to intimidate people into fearing to oppose jihad violence, for fear that this opposition would lead to attacks on innocent Muslims, which are never justified. If Khan really wants to combat dislike of Islam and suspicion of Muslims, he should work against jihad groups and try to stop jihad attacks. But of course he wouldn’t even come close to considering doing something like that.

Germany: More Than One Attack Every Day on Gays in Berlin Alone, Overwhelmingly by Muslim Migrants

Celebrate diversity! They are not dangerous, they are in danger! Refugees welcome!

A hadith depicts Muhammad specifying the punishment for homosexual activity: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, ‘Whoever you find doing the action of the people of Loot, execute the one who does it and the one to whom it is done.’“ (Sunan Abu Dawud 4462)

Will gay rights advocates say a word about this? Of course not. It has long been established that in the hierarchy of Leftist causes, Islam trumps gay rights.

Sweden: Rise of Fatal Shootings Linked to Mass Migration, Gothenburg Police Commissioner Says

In the wake of a government commissioned report which noted that Sweden is the only country in Europe where fatal shootings are increasing, Gothenburg’s police chief has publicly recognized that there is in fact a clear link between the surge of fatal shootings and mass migration.

Erik Nord, the police commissioner of the Greater Gothenburg region, commented on a recent reportpublished by the Crime Prevention Council (Brå), saying that the shocking increase of lethal firearm violence and gang-related crime in Sweden is connected to mass migration.

In an opinion editorial penned for Goteborgs Posten, Commissioner Nord wrote: “It is no longer a secret today that much of the problem of gang and network crime with the shootings and explosions is linked to migration to Sweden in recent decades.”

“When, like me, you have the opportunity to see cases at the individual level, you see that virtually everyone who shoots or is shot in gang conflicts originates from the Balkans, the Middle East, North or East Africa.”

Hungary Passes Law Banning Showing Children Material on Homosexuality or Transgenderism

Hungary’s National Assembly has passed a law that bans showing children under the age of 18 material related to homosexuality or transgenderism in education, on television, movies or in advertisements.

The vote passed earlier today by a huge margin of 157-1.

“The law was included in a larger bill cracking down on pedophilia by creating a register of child sex offenders, implementing stricter punishments for child pornography, and barring pedophile offenders from jobs where they would encounter children. It also singled out the promotion of LGBT affairs in schools,” reports RT.

According to a statement by ruling party Fidesz, the law ensures that sex education in schools “must not be aimed” at “promoting homosexuality” or “changing gender.”

Nickelodeon Ratings Drop Dramatically as Cable Network Pushes LGBTQ Agenda to Kids

The latest television and internet ratings reveal Nickelodeon’s efforts to promote the LGBTQ agenda to children have apparently backfired with the cable network losing two-thirds of its audience in four years.

Why? Some entertainment writers are saying a lot of parents don’t think it’s so great.

The independent news blog Pirates and Princesses reported Nickelodeon YouTube videos were “downvoted to such a degree that they’ve now hidden the ratio.”

The news blog says the Nickelodeon cable network has seen a major decline in viewers since it began overtly pushing the LGBTQ agenda to its young viewers.
