Core Consumer Prices Surge at Fastest Rate Since 1992

With the world’s eyes having moved on from China’s rip-roaring PPI (and post-data decision to unleash price controls), this morning’s CPI print has been heralded as the arbiter of “is it transitory or not” with some (BofA) even suggesting we are nearing a period of “transitory hyperinflation.” The answer for now is — inflation’s still accelerating as headline CPI soared 5.0% YoY (hotter than the +4.7% expected). That is the highest level of inflatuion since Aug 2008.

But it is core CPI that is the huge outlier, soaring 3.8% YoY — the hottest level of inflation since 1992…

Half of Pandemic Unemployment Funds May Have Been Stolen: Axios

As much as half of the unemployment benefits paid by the US government over the past year may have been stolen through fraud, with the bulk ultimately ending up outside the country — likely into the hands of foreign crime syndicates in China, Nigeria, Russia and elsewhere, according to Axios‘ Felix Salmon.

According to some estimates, unemployment fraud during the pandemic could ‘easily reach $400 billion,’ as states weren’t prepared for the unprecedented wave of unemployment claims

Creator-Based Apps Push Back Against Apple’s Cut

Apple’s App Store rules are once again a subject of contention as a startup geared toward allowing creators to monetize their content struggles to prevent Apple from taking a huge chunk of the in-app payments its users receive.

The Big Tech behemoth, on the other hand, wants that 30 percent cut from all purchases taking place in the iPhone app of Fanhouse, the startup in question.

Discovery Alert: A ‘Cool’ Planet — With Plenty of Atmosphere?

The planet: TOI-1231 b

The discovery: A planet some 90 light-years away from Earth is oddly reminiscent of our own Neptune — that is, a gaseous world with a potentially rich atmosphere, ripe for study. The planet is more than 3 1/2 times as big around as Earth and warm by Earthly standards at 134 degrees Fahrenheit (57 Celsius). But astronomers say it is one of the “coolest,” comparatively small planets known to date, and in a prime position for the components of its atmosphere to be teased apart by space telescopes.

Key facts: TOI-1231 b orbits a red-dwarf star — smaller but longer lived than our own Sun — with a year, once around the star, that is 24 days long. But the planet stays relatively cool despite its close orbit because its star also is on the cooler side. Though not habitable due to its size, the planet could offer scientists one of their first chances to capture a “bar-code” type reading of the atmosphere of a temperate, Neptune-sized exoplanet — a planet orbiting another star. This will allow comparisons with similar worlds elsewhere in the galaxy, bringing potentially deep insights into the composition and formation of exoplanets and planetary systems, including our own.

Draft Antitrust Bills Against Big Tech Circulate Washington

Legislators are about to introduce antitrust bills, focused on limiting the ever growing power of Big Tech companies. Both Republicans and Democrats agree on Big Tech’s antitrust practices.

According to Axios, drafts of antitrust bills, focusing on the anti-competition practices of Big Tech companies, are doing rounds in Washington. The bills will likely be introduced by the Antitrust Subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee.

The subcommittee’s investigation into Big Tech’s antitrust practices began last year; it published a revealing report that recommended the revision of antitrust laws so that they account for the changes that have come with the internet age.

Heart Inflammation in Young Men Higher Than Expected After Pfizer, Moderna Vaccines — U.S. CDC

(Reuters) —A higher-than-expected number of young men have experienced heart inflammation after their second dose of the mRNA COVID-19 shots from Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna, according to data from two vaccine safety monitoring systems, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Thursday.

The CDC and other health regulators have been investigating heart inflammation cases after Israel’s Health Ministry reported that it had found a likely link to the condition in young men who received Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine.

The agency said it is still assessing the risk from the condition and has not yet concluded that there was a causal relationship between the vaccines and cases of myocarditis or pericarditis.

‘People Are Scared’ as Gang Activity Fuels Portland Violence

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — When Oregon’s most populous city had a rampant gang problem 30 years ago, Portland detectives were stunned if they found more than a few dozen bullet casings after a shooting. Now, police are recording multiple shootings a week with 50 to 70 shots fired, and in one case more than 150, as gang attacks and retaliatory shootings again spiral into a vicious cycle.

With more bullets comes more bloodshed. There have been 37 homicides in Oregon’s largest city so far this year, more than six times the number recorded in the same period last year. If nothing changes, Portland will surpass its all-time record for homicides of 70 set in 1987, when the city was in the midst of a gang siege.

Portland Police Driven Out of Headquarters After Year of Constant Vandalism

The Portland police have moved their police union headquarters after a year of near constant vandalism. PPA headquarters were in the Kenton neighborhood of the Rose City, but the building was a “target of vandalism” for Antifa militants and others during the past year of civil unrest.

It was in April that rioters attempted to set the headquarters ablaze. They were expressing their anger over the death of a man in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. The arson attempt took place on the second night of rioting in Portland over the death of Daunte Wright, who was shot during a traffic stop.

Local Fox affiliate Fox 12 reported that the new location for the headquarters has not yet been disclosed.

“I do think that future historians will look back on this and say this was the single biggest public health mistake, possibly of all history, in terms of the scope of the harm that it’s caused,” said Bhattacharya.

Sen. Lindsey Graham: Trump Would Have Won 2020 Election if Wuhan Lab Leak Theory Was Proven

Authored by Jack Phillips via The Epoch Times

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said former President Donald Trump would have won the 2020 election if investigations into the origin of COVID-19 and whether it escaped from a laboratory in Wuhan, China, were not politicized.

“If COVID-19 had come about due to a Chinese lab leak, the top question on voters’ minds in the 2020 election would have become who was going to stand up to China. Which candidate would hold the Chinese accountable for unleashing the COVID-19 plague on the world?” wrote Graham for Fox News on Thursday.

Teen Kills Father of Four After NY Judge Releases Him for Third Time in Four Months

After a New York judge released a teen for the third time in four months on gun charges, the 16-year-old shot and killed a 34-year-old father of four. Alberto Ramirez is reportedly a gang member, and the incident apparently took place when he was in a rival gang’s neighborhood.

Alberto Ramirez is accused of shooting Eric Velasquez on May 16. Ramirez, who was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, first degree manslaughter, and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, would not have been on the street had he not been previously released by NYC Supreme Court Justice Denis Boyle—twice, according to the New York Post.

In December, Boyle let Ramirez go without bail on gun charges, and in March, Ramirez’s bail was set at a mere $10,000. Prosecutors had opposed the December release, and had asked for bail to be set at $75,000 in March.

Boyle’s failings also extend to how Ramirez was charged. Prosecutors had looked for him to be tried as an adult, but Judge Boyle refused. Boyle dropped the cases down to family court.

Virginia Mom Who Survived Maoist China Eviscerates School Board’s Critical Race Theory Push

A Virginia mom who endured Mao Zedong’s Cultural Revolution before immigrating to the U.S. ripped a Virginia school board at a public meeting Tuesday over its stubborn support of the controversial critical race theory.

“I’ve been very alarmed by what’s going on in our schools,” Xi Van Fleet told the Loudoun County School Board members. “You are now teaching, training our children to be social justice warriors and to loathe our country and our history.”

She likened CRT, which critics deride as a form of “neo-racism,” to China’s Cultural Revolution, a Mao-led purge that left between 500,000 and 20 million people dead from 1966 to 1976. The estimates vary greatly and many details have been shrouded in secrecy for decades.

Protesters Gather Below Sky Palace, Demand Right to Worship as They See Fit

On Wednesday, the Battle for Canada Worship Protest took to the Legislature grounds to sing, pray, and join together in fellowship in defiance of the Alberta lockdown on places of worship. The event was put together by Pastor Art Lucier from Kelowna’s Harvest Fellowship Church.

As of Wednesday night, Alberta was still in Stage 1 of the UCP government’s “Open for Summer” plan, with worship services limited to 15 per cent of fire code capacity. On Thursday, Alberta moved into Stage 2, allowing in-person services at up to one third of capacity.

Though it was pouring rain, about 500 people met right outside the infamous Sky Palace — where Premier Jason Kenney was recently seen on the penthouse rooftop patio violating his own lockdown on social gatherings — to send a message to the government that church is essential. Hungary: PM Orban Announces Income Tax Refund for Families With Children

If the country’s economic performance this year is strong enough, the state will refund the income tax for families with children early next year, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said at a Budapest economic conference on Wednesday.

If economic growth reaches 5.5 percent, families with children will get their paid personal income tax back in early 2022 to replenish their reserves spent in the crisis, Orban said at the conference organized by daily Vilaggazdasag.

This measure would cost the central budget 550 billion to 580 billion forints (€1.59 billion to €1.67 billion). The prime minister stressed that the richest do not need this, so a limit should be set at the level of the average income.

Pope Francis Will Meet PM Orban and President Ader in Hungary

Despite what the international press wrote earlier, Pope Francis will meet both Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and President Janos Áder when he comes to Budapest on Sept. 12, the Conference of the Hungarian Catholic Bishops said in a statement on Wednesday.

“We find it unfortunate that false information and misinterpretations of the Holy Father’s program in Hungary, which is still being organized, have spread in local and international media. Although Biden’s surname traces its roots back to English settlers, he publicly self-identifies as an American-Irishman. Indeed, he often plays up the stereotype of the Irishman as congenitally anti-British, for example by declining to give a comment to the British Broadcasting Corporation with the words “The BBC? UK Nightclub Owners Say They’re Prepared to Break the Law to Defy Lockdown Restrictions

UK nightclub owners say they are willing to risk being arrested by opening up in violation of the law if restrictions are not lifted by the government on June 21st.

People in England and Wales were supposedly set to celebrate “freedom day” later this month when all mask mandates and social distancing measures end as the final stage of the government’s “road map” out of lockdown is reached.

UK: Parliament Slams Oxford Profs: ‘Useless Bunch’ Driven by ‘Wokeness’

More than 150 Oxford University academics are refusing to teach unless a statue of a controversial British colonial leader is removed — getting them ripped in Parliament as a “useless bunch” driven by “wokeness.”

The lecturers signed a “statement of a boycott of Oriel College” over the decision to keep a statue of Cecil Rhodes, who drove colonial expansion in southern Africa in the 1800s, and for whom the school’s Rhodes Scholarship is named, according to The Telegraph.

“Faced with Oriel’s stubborn attachment to a statue that glorifies colonialism and the wealth it produced for the college, we feel we have no choice but to withdraw all discretionary work and goodwill collaborations,” the lecturers’ statement said.

Reaction to the boycott threat came from as high up as Prime Minister Boris Johnson, whose office said he expects “appropriate action” to be taken to make sure students are compensated for any cancelled classes.

[Comment: Well, there are right-wingers, such as the John Birchers, who do not like Ceci Rhodes either.]

Voter Preference for Anti-Immigration Parties in Italy is Rising

If parliamentary elections were held in Italy now, the national conservative and Eurosceptic Brothers of Italy (FdI) would end up in second behind, the anti-immigration Lega Nord. This follows from a survey of electoral preferences conducted by SWG. Currently, 20.1 percent of voters would vote for the Brothers of Italy party, while Lega Nord has the support of 21.4 percent of Italians.

The Brothers of Italy party is now the only opposition parliamentary party because everyone else supports a government of national unity led by Prime Minister Mario Draghi. Chairwoman Giorgia Meloni hopes that this position will gain more supporters who are dissatisfied with the current cabinet. In the previous elections in 2018, the FdI won just over 4 percent of the vote.

UK: Breaking: Woman Wins Case After Being Terminated for Stating Gender Critical Beliefs

Maya Forstater, the tax expert who lost her job at a US think tank in the UK for tweeting that biological sex is real and that sex matters, has won her appeal.

This means that people who express “gender critical” beliefs, that sex is important, cannot be sacked or otherwise punished for it without their employer being legally liable.

Forstater brought the appeal against the first instance decision of an employment tribunal, which found that her belief in the social salience of sex was “unworthy of respect in a democratic society,” and therefore not subject to discrimination protection.

Forstater received public support from the author and philanthropist JK Rowling who turned the case into a cause célèbre with a tweet.

  1. Science, research in Australia at the Snowy Mountains Hydro Project and at Hoover Dam in the US showed that Seatbelts saved life and reduced injuries. Science today shows that the best use for most masks is toilet paper, they are not really very good for that either.

  2. “In other news, Damien Tarel, the young Frenchman who slapped the face of President Emmanuel Macron, has been sentenced to eighteen months in prison, with fourteen months suspended.” A slap on the wrist for a slap on the face!

    • This fits into the great picture of ” the total reset” advocated by the Davos tycoons: by oversupply in the gold market, prices will drop and brave little savers exproprieted while the very rich will stock up for cheap and soon own everything.

  3. Africa should take care of itself. I am sick to death of hearing about poor Africans.
