Biden Plans Retroactive Hike in Capital-Gains Taxes, So it May be Already Too Late for Investors to Avoid it: Report

President Joe Biden’s proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year assumes that a hike in the capital-gains tax rate took effect in late April, meaning that it already would be too late for high-income investors to realize gains at lower tax rates, according to a Wall Street Journal report out Thursday citing people familiar with the proposal.

Biden plans to increase the top tax rate on capital gains to 43.4% from 23.8% for households with income over $1 million, though Congress must OK any hikes and retroactive effective dates, the report added.

Some analysts predicted any rise in capital-gains taxes will not end up being retroactive.

The mass buying continued through 2020 summer protests and through the fall election. A week this spring broke 1.2 million background checks.

Healthcare Workers Sue Houston Hospital Over COVID-19 Vaccine Mandate for Forcing Staff to be Human ‘Guinea Pigs’

A group of 117 staff members from Houston’s Methodist Hospital sued on Friday to prevent their employer from forcing them to get vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to continue working there.

The lawsuit claims that it’s illegal for their boss to require a vaccine as a condition of employment, and was filed by Jared Woodfill, a local lawyer, on behalf of the plaintiffs in Texas State Court.

According to the Washington Post, this group is part of a growing trend of such actions across the country. In the publication’s words, “the staffers join a growing list of employees challenging compulsory immunizations at businesses, colleges and other workplaces essential to the country’s reopening.”

House Republicans Propose ‘Stars and Stripes Act’ To Ban BLM, Other ‘Political Flags’ From Flying at US Embassies

Rep. Nicole Milliotakis (R-NY) has introduced new legislation that would ban Black Lives Matter among other “political” flags, apart from the American flag, from flying at United States embassies.

This new bill was co-sponsored by Reps. Ken Buck (R-CO), Michael Guest (R-MS.), Darrell Issa (R-CA), Brian Mast (R-FL) and Pete Sessions (R-TX).

According to Milliotakis’s website, what prompted this measure was an incident at the US Embassy in Athens, Greece. The Black Lives Matter flag was flown on the anniversary of George Floyd’s death at many US embassies around the world. A leaked memo revealed that the Biden administration authorized the display of Black Lives Matter flags at state department buildings including embassies.

Michigan Court Greenlights Effort to Recall Gov. Whitmer

On Friday, the Michigan Court of Appeals ruled in favor of a recall effort aimed at unseating the state’s Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Specifically, six different petitions currently being circulated to recall the embattled governor have been allowed to continue by the Court of Appeals, along with another petition calling for the recall of Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II.

According to Michigan Live, the court’s ruling upholds a previous decision made by the Michigan Board of Canvassers that the petitions were legit and could move forward. Whitmer has come under fire for many things since the start of the pandemic. Recently, she has been receiving lots of media attention for alleged misdeeds regarding management of long-term care facilities during the pandemic.

A spokesperson for the Whitmer campaign commented: “We plan to appeal this disappointing decision and we fully intend to beat back these irresponsible partisan attacks against the Governor in the courts, on the streets or at the ballot.”

Texas Senate Passes Bill to Purge Voter Rolls of Non-Citizens and Non-Residents

On Sunday, the Texas Senate passed a voter roll maintenance bill that looks to purge non-citizen and non-residents from the state’s voter rolls.

Senate Bill 155, according to the Texas Scorecard, “adds the Texas attorney general to the list of officials receiving information about voters who identify themselves as not meeting citizenship or residency qualifications for jury service. This means they are also ineligible to be registered to vote in the county in which they were called to serve on a jury—or, in the case of non-citizens, at all.”

After prosecutors with the Attorney General’s office confirmed to lawmakers back in 2018 that non-citizens were registering to vote and voting in Texas elections, although it is already considered illegal to do so, the Republican Party of Texas made election integrity its top priority during the 2021 session.

Far-Right Party, Centrist Group Gain Big in Cyprus Poll

NICOSIA, Cyprus — The far-right ELAM party and a centrist splinter group made big gains in Cyprus’ parliamentary election on Sunday as a sizeable chunk of supporters appeared to have turned their back on the top three parties amid voter disenchantment with traditional power centers.

With 100% of votes counted, ELAM garnered 6.78% of the vote — a 3% increase from the previous election in 2016 — to edge out the socialist EDEK party by the razor-thin margin of around 200 votes.

The centrist DIPA — made up of key figures from the center-right DIKO party which has traditionally been the third biggest party — gained 6.1% of the vote.

[Comment: The article says further down, “Christoforou said the real winners were ELAM with its strident anti-migration platform and hardline nationalist polies and DIPA whose top echelons still have connections to the centers of political power as former ministers and lawmakers.”]

French Judiciary Frees Extremist Antisemitic Murderer

Paris, April 4, 2017. 4:00 am. A man breaks into the home of Sarah Halimi, a 65-year-old retired Jewish physician and educator. He beats and tortures her for over an hour while reciting verses from the Quran and repeatedly shouting, “Allahu Akbar!” [Allah is the greatest!”]. He uses anti-Semitic slurs and calls her “Sheitan” (Satan). He throws her from the balcony of her apartment and she falls to the ground, three floors below, dead. The police arrest him.

What happened was an unspeakable antisemitic murder. It was also the start of a process that brought to light once again the many serious and shameful dysfunctions that mark today’s France.

The murderer, Kobili Traore, an immigrant from Mali who became a French citizen, is a recidivist criminal who had already been arrested and sentenced by the courts 20 times for violent assaults. He was nonetheless free. His only known professional activity is, in two words: drug dealer. He told the officers who arrested him that he is a drug addict and had smoked marijuana in the hours before the murder.

Italian Court Fined for “Playing Down Gender-Based Violence”

Authored by Jonathan Turley

There is an interesting decision out of the European Court of Human Rights. The court fined an Italian court for “playing down gender-based violence” in a ruling on a gang rape case.

The ECHR objected to references to the alleged victim’s sexuality, behavior, and the color of her underwear.

The case involved an alleged gang rape by seven men in a car after a party in 2008. The woman was a student who said that she was drunk at the time. The trial court convicted six of the men. However, the appellate court in Florence overturned the convictions in 2015.

What is striking is that the ECHR did not challenge that verdict but objected that the “language and arguments” used by the Florence court “conveyed prejudices existing in Italian society regarding the role of women.”
