Why Illinois is in Trouble: 122,258 Public Employees Earned $100,000+ Costing Taxpayers $15.8 Billion

By Adam Andrzejewski of OpenTheBooks.com, first published in Forbes

Illinois public employees and retirees with $100,000+ paychecks grew from 109,881 (2019) to an all-time high of 122,258 in 2020 — costing taxpayers $15.8 billion.

Congressional “bailouts” made it possible. The recent $1.9 trillion American Rescue Act provided an additional $13.5 billion to Illinois state and local governments.

Bill Maher to Young People With Far-Left Views: “Your Ideas Are Stupid”

Bill Maher, host of “Real Time” on HBO, criticized the fact that “a third of people under 35” support policies such as abolishing the police and communism.

“You know the reason why advertisers in this country love the 18 to 34 demographic?” Maher said. “Because it’s the most gullible. Yeah.”

“A third of people under 35 say they’re in favor of abolishing the police — not defunding, but doing away with a police force altogether, which is less of a policy position and more of a leg tattoo.”

“Thirty-six percent of millennials think it might be a good idea to try communism, but much of the world did try it. I know, millennials think that doesn’t count because they weren’t alive when it happened. But it did happen. And there are people around who remember it. Pining for communism?”

“The problem isn’t that I don’t get what you’re saying or that I’m old. The problem is that your ideas are stupid.”

“Twenty percent of Gen Z agree with the statement, ‘society would be better off if all property was owned by the public and managed by the government,’ and another 29% saying they don’t know if that’s a good idea. Here’s who does know: anyone who wasn’t born yesterday.”

Derek Chauvin’s Medical Expert Faces Probe of Past Opinions After Murder Trial

The medical expert who testified for the defense in convicted ex-cop Derek Chauvin’s murder trial is going under the microscope himself.

Seventeen years’ worth of death reports produced by Dr. David Fowler, Maryland’s former chief medical officer, will be reviewed in the wake of complaints over Fowler’s testimony that Chauvin was not to blame for the in-custody death of George Floyd in Minneapolis last year.

“Independent experts” will “review reports issued by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) regarding deaths in custody” from 2003 to 2020, when Fowler headed the office, the state attorney general’s office told the Baltimore Sun Friday.

Lawmaker Questions Financial Ties Between Fact Checker and Johnson and Johnson

Representative Thomas Massie has raised questions about the financial relationship between a common online fact checker and Johnson and Johnson — a regular subject in its fact-checks, particularly where it relates to J&J’s COVID-19 vaccine.

A Factcheck.org project addressing “misconceptions” about COVID-19 and vaccines is funded by an organization that has more than 15% of its assets in Johnson & Johnson stock, Massie pointed out.

The significant amount of stock in a company that is producing a COVID-19 vaccine would make some question if the project is really an unbiased source of COVID-19 information.

Protesters Block Traffic, Clash With Cops on Brooklyn Bridge

Dramatic footage by The Post shows a crowd of protesters snarling traffic and squaring off with cops just a block from City Hall on the Manhattan side of the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday night.

Dozens of protesters had crossed the bridge by walking along its Manhattan-bound roadway, blocking cars.

About a half dozen protesters were given appearance tickets for obstruction of vehicular traffic, according to police. There were no injuries reported, police said.

Senator Rand Paul: Dr. Fauci Must Answer Questions on Why He Continued to Fund Dangerous Human-Virus Studies After They Were Banned in US (Video)

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) joined Maria Bartiromo earlier today on Sunday Morning Futures.

During their conversation, Senator Paul scolded Joe Biden for wearing a mask on his international global warming calls this week, saying, “I guess this means that Dr. Fauci now believes you can get COVID, you can catch it over your webcam.

Senator Paul then said Dr. Fauci must answer questions on why he funded dangerous human-viral testing even after it was banned here in the US.

Senator Paul, “There’s a huge ethical question about the origins of the virus. The ethical question is should we be doing gain of function, should we be upgrading animal viruses in the lab to make them more susceptible to humans… We have to ask Dr. Fauci, why did he in overseeing these labs allowed gain of function? Why did he allow labs to get money to upgrade animal viruses so they can infect humans? We got worried about this around 2 or 3 years ago. We closed down about half of them but then Dr. Fauci and his committees opened them back up. We need to ask him why are we doing this in China but are we doing this in the US?”

Suspect in Fatal Appalachian Trail Machete Attack Not Guilty by ‘Reason of Insanity’

A Massachusetts man accused of killing an Appalachian Trail hiker with a machete two years ago was found not guilty “by reason of insanity” last week.

James Jordan, 32, was arrested and charged with murder and “assault with intent to murder” in May 2019 after officials said he attacked a group of hikers on the trail in Virginia — fatally stabbing 43-year-old Ronald S. Sanchez, Jr. of Oklahoma and injuring a woman, McClatchy News previously reported.

A few weeks before the attack, other hikers had reported that Jordan — who was wielding a machete and calling himself “Sovereign” — threatened and terrorized them along the trail in North Carolina and Tennessee.

Then, in May, Sanchez set up camp with three other hikers in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest, The Washington Post reports based on court records. Jordan, who the hikers said they recognized due to his “erratic behavior,” was camping nearby.

When Jordan started acting “increasingly disturbed and unstable,” Sanchez and the others decided to leave.

“Jordan began randomly approaching the hikers’ tents, making noises and threatening the hikers,” FBI Agent Micah Childers wrote in 2019, according to MassLive. “Jordan spoke to the hikers through their tents and threatened to pour gasoline on their tents and burn them to death.”

When the four tried to leave the camp, officials say Jordan ran after two of them with the machete, MassLive reports. Jordan returned to the campsite, where officials say he fatally stabbed Sanchez.

A woman saw the attack and ran. But feds say Jordan caught up to her, stabbing her multiple times, The Washington Post reports. She survived and was able to call 911…

EU Regulations Are Stifling the Continent’s Car Industry

The new emission norms imposed by the European Union since 2000 are stifling the European car industry and playing into the hands of Chinese brands, Hungarian news and opinion site Mandiner writes in a new analysis.

According to the car price database of Germany’s leading automotive magazine Autobild, the base price of the most recent VW Golf Mk8 series has exceeded €20,000, while Mk7 prices started at €17,800; Mk6 at €17,000; Mk5 at €15,500; and Mk4 at €14,900. The increase for the current generation was the steepest yet, even accounting for inflation.

In its annual report, German automotive data supplier DAT states that German car prices have jumped 90 percent in the last 25 years; meanwhile, salaries have grown by only 60 percent. The average car price in Germany rose by 8.2 percent to more than €36,000, while an average new car in Germany cost €30,000 in 2016 and €27,000 in 2012.

Protesters Mass in France, Israel, UK to Demand Justice for Sarah Halimi

Protesters gathered in Paris, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and London on Sunday to demonstrate against the ruling of France’s highest court that the killer of a Jewish woman in the French capital was not criminally responsible because he had smoked marijuana before the crime.

But in a decision earlier this month, the Court of Cassation’s Supreme Court of Appeals upheld rulings by lower tribunals that Traore cannot stand trial because he was too high on marijuana to be criminally responsible for his actions.

Bangladesh: Muslim Mob Tears Down Newspaper Office, Attacks Hindu Homes

In yet another horrifying instance of the persecution of the minorities in Bangladesh, a 200-strong Muslim mob has reportedly torn down a newspaper office and vandalized and looted Hindu homes in Bangladesh’s Habibgunj district on April 19, 2021.

The Dainik Amar Habiganj office, its editor, and journalists were hounded after the news daily published stories exposing the politicians and leaders of the Awami League and Jubo League, alleging that they had occupied Hindu temple lands and leveling other serious accusations of corruption against them.

Enraged by the explosive content of the reports published in the Dainik Amar Habibjung, a local outfit named “Sachetan Nagarik Samaj” staged a protest against the news daily, demanding to bring the shutters down on it for good. The protest gained strength with members of the Jubo League and Chhatra League joining in large numbers. Led by one Ataur Rahman Selim, the crowd formed human chains and began a procession toward the newspaper office to tear it down. They were armed with sticks and country weapons. However, unable to enter the office, they hurled numerous brickbats at the building, leading to extensive destruction of the property and valuables. According to reports, four or five journalists have sustained serious injuries after being struck by these soaring brickbats.

Kyösti Tarvainen PhD, a retired Finnish professor and researcher in the Department of Mathematics and System at Aalto University in Helsinki, using the standard demographic method — the so-called cohort component method — concluded that Swedes will compose less than half of the population by 2065 if the country’s current levels of immigration remain unchanged.

In the next half decade, if current immigration policies endure, Sweden will see seismic shifts in its demographics, culture, and society, Tarvainen, who has his doctorate in engineering, says. According to the academic’s projections, there will be as many Muslims as there are Swedes in 2100.
