The Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is suing the federal government for $250,000 over his treatment in a maximum security federal prison. Among other complaints, Mr. Tsarnaev alleges that he was limited to three showers per week.

Stocks ended a choppy session at record highs Friday afternoon as investors attempted to gauge the likelihood of additional stimulus out of Washington.
The three major indices fluctuated between gains and losses throughout the session, at one point turning negative following a report that additional stimulus out of Washington still faced roadblocks within the Senate. The Washington Post reported Friday afternoon that Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia said he would “absolutely not” back another round of stimulus checks, suggesting Democratic lawmakers still faced hurdles in advancing more stimulus even with control of the chamber.
Still, the S&P 500 ended at a record closing high, as a weaker-than-expected jobs report Friday morning and Democratic sweep of the Georgia Senate run-off races earlier this week stoked optimism for still-more aid from Washington to support the economy. The index’s one-week gain totaled 1.8% in its first week of trading in 2021. Bitcoin prices held above $40,000, and U.S. crude oil prices buoyed over $51 per barrel.

The World’s Cryptocurrency is Now Worth More Than $1 Trillion
The world’s cryptocurrency is now worth more than $1 trillion, with bitcoin accounting for a large majority of the value. The price of the oldest virtual currency has risen to almost $40,000, pushing the value of all bitcoins in circulation up to more than $700 billion.
Ether, the cryptocurrency of the Ethereum network, is now worth more than $140 billion. Then there’s a long list of less valuable cryptocurrencies, including Tether at $22 billion, Litecoin at $11 billion, and Bitcoin Cash at $8 billion.
Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto is believed to own around 1 million bitcoins. Most of these were mined in the first two years of Bitcoin’s existence when there was little competition. If he still has copies of the private keys that control these coins, that would give him a net worth of nearly $40 billion—enough to make him among the 40 wealthiest people on the planet. Nakamoto has never publicly revealed his true identity and has not communicated publicly since 2014.

US Loses 140,000 Jobs in December, First Monthly Loss Since Spring
WASHINGTON (NewsNation Now) — U.S. employers cut 140,000 jobs in December, marking the first decline in eight months, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The agency reported the cuts Friday in its latest monthly report on the country’s employment situation, suggesting a significant loss of momentum that could temporarily stall economic recovery from the pandemic.
Nonfarm payrolls decreased by 140,000 jobs last month, the Labor Department said on Friday. Data for November was revised up to show 336,000 jobs added instead of 245,000 as previously reported. That was the first decline in payrolls since April.

70-Year-Old Rioter Had 11 Molotov Cocktails Akin to ‘Homemade Napalm’ Near Capitol: Feds
A 70-year-old Trump supporter toting an assault rifle and 11 Molotov cocktails that amounted to “homemade napalm” was among those arrested over Wednesday’s assault on the Capitol, authorities said Friday.
Lonnie Coffman of Falkville, Ala., had the “ready to go” explosive devices in his red GMC pickup truck in the area along with an M4 carbine assault rifle and two handguns, Justice Department officials said.
Coffman used gasoline and styrofoam to fashion the devices, Assistant US Attorney Ken Kohl told reporters.

Apple is threatening free speech social network Parler with a ban from the App Store unless it censors “objectionable” content and bears full responsibility for everything users post to the app.
In a message sent to Parler via Apple’s App Review Resolution Center, Apple accused the app of “serious App Store guideline violations.” This message cites complaints about “objectionable content” and accuses Parler of being “used to plan, coordinate, and facilitate the illegal activities in Washington D.C. on January 6, 2021.”

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has blamed President Donald Trump for violence in the American capital by some of his supporters, saying he was “completely wrong” to dispute the results of “a free and fair election”.

Capitol Siege: Four Veterans Give Their Firsthand Account on Thursday’s Protest at US Capitol
There was a small group that was on the front line during the storming of the US Capitol on Wednesday after traitor Mike Pence stabbed Trump and America in the back.
They asked not to use their names or identifying information because they are unsure whether federal authorities will pursue them, or if they will be harassed by left-wing doxxers.

Caroline Glick: Trump Rings in the Era of “Total Political Correctness”
It was hard to watch the scenes of President Donald Trump supporters storming the Capitol on Wednesday as the joint session of Congress was convened to debate and ratify President Elect Joe Biden’s electoral college victory. Suddenly, the home of America’s representative government was threatened not by Islamic terrorists or China or Russia, but by the people the lawmakers represent — Americans. And the Americans in question had just attended a rally where President Trump told them Biden stole the election and the procedure going on the joint session was illegitimate.
The day before his supporters stormed the Capitol, Georgia elected two new Democrat senators. Those elections mean that beginning January 20, the Democrats will control all three elected bodies in Washington. And so, at least until the 2022 Congressional elections, Democrats will be able to do whatever they wish and Republicans won’t be able to stop them.
The events Wednesday will doubtlessly dominate the news cycle at least until Biden’s inauguration. And, given the nature of the U.S. media, the coverage will doubtlessly ignore two realities without which the public will be unable to understand what happened Wednesday or understand the nature of American politics and culture.
The first reality is that the assault on the Capitol was not a unique event. Rather it was a direct continuation of the political violence that leftist groups dominated by BlackLivesMatter and Antifa have engaged in in cities across America since last May.
BLM and Antifa rioters have burned and looted small businesses, destroying the savings and livelihoods of tens of thousands of Americans. Armed and violent rioters stormed and destroyed a police precinct in Minneapolis. They laid siege to a federal courthouse in Portland and vandalized the mayor’s home…

Dominion Voting Systems Sues Sidney Powell for $1.3b Over Election Fraud Claims
Pro-Trump lawyer Sidney Powell has been slapped with a $1.3 billion lawsuit by Dominion Voting Systems over her “wild accusations” that the company rigged the presidential election.
Dominion, whose vote-counting equipment was used in several states, filed the federal complaint Friday to “set the record straight.”
“During a Washington, D.C. press conference, a Georgia political rally, and a media blitz, Powell falsely claimed that Dominion had rigged the election, that Dominion was created in Venezuela to rig elections for Hugo Chavez, and that Dominion bribed Georgia officials for a no-bid contract,” the company said.

Florida COVID Hospitalization Rates Are Similar to 2018 Flu Season
Florida has done away with mandatory mask wearing and lockdowns, a circumstance that has attracted a flood of outsiders coming for vacations and business conferences.
If you were to believe the premise that letting up on mask wearing and lockdowns would cause hospitalizations to skyrocket in the wake of this, you would be wrong. The truth is, despite the lack of mask mandates and lockdowns, hospitalization rates in Florida are on par with what they were during the flu season of 2018.
Looking at just the statistics alone, The Blaze found that in 2018 there were 1,972 hospitalizations per 1 million people. Today there are 1,998.
The bottom line, according to The Blaze, is “In other states, lockdown proponents can theoretically suggest that the reason the hospital numbers aren’t worse is because of the measures they are taking. However, Florida serves as the perfect control group, given that there is no lockdown and there have been no statewide restrictions in place for several months.”

Ghislaine Maxwell Might Make New Bid for Bail, Lawyers Say
Jeffrey Epstein cohort Ghislaine Maxwell is mulling a third bid for bail with “even more stringent and restrictive” conditions — after a federal judge rejected her $28.5 million bail package last month, new court papers revealed.
In a letter to US District Judge Alison Nathan, defense lawyer Christian Everdell asked for a 30-day extension to appeal the latest bail decision to “give Ms. Maxwell the opportunity to research whether and to what extent these additional conditions are legally and practicably available.” Prosecutors have objected to the extension, the filing says.

Laptop From Nancy Pelosi’s Office Among Items Stolen in DC Riot
The Trump-supporting rioters who broke into the Capitol building during Wednesday’s deadly insurrection swiped laptops from the offices of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Jeff Merkley, among other electronics, it was revealed Friday.
A congressional aide to Pelosi (D-Calif.) said a laptop was stolen from her office, which protesters ransacked and vandalized during their hours-long siege.

Mainstream Journalist Sets Off Alarm Bells as He Calls for ‘Cleansing’ of Trump Supporters
In a now-deleted tweet, ABC News political director Rick Klein said “cleansing” the “movement Trump commands” is the true challenge going forward, leading many to wonder what exactly liberals may mean by that.

Minneapolis Protesters Raise Somali Flag
On December 30, a 23-year-old man named Dolal Idd, who was wanted on felony charges, fired on Minneapolis police officers, who returned fire and killed him. Despite the fact that what happened is clear and there is no actual question of excessive force by the police, hundreds of people protested Sunday, claiming that Idd had been treated unjustly. In the course of the protests, some of the participants replaced an American flag that was flying over a South Minneapolis gas station with a Somali flag. It was a telling indication of what mass immigration without assimilation has already done to this country, and what it is likely to do in the future.
Joe Biden is set to reopen the mass migration floodgates, and so it is virtually certain that before too long, numerous Somalis will enter the United States and further increase the Somali population in Minneapolis and elsewhere. Pelosi Calls for Trump Impeachment; Pence Says No to 25th
Nancy Pelosi joined Chuck Schumer Thursday in calling for President Trump to be impeached and removed from office under the 25th amendment, a move that would also prevent him seeking a second term in 2024.
Both called the breach inside the Capitol an ‘insurrection’, and proof that Trump is unfit to remain President for another 12 days, or ever take office again.
Labelling Trump a “very dangerous person”, Pelosi said that “this is an emergency of the highest magnitude,” adding “If the vice president and the cabinet do not act the congress may be prepared to move forward with impeachment.”

Rioters Left Feces, Urine in Hallways and Offices During Mobbing of US Capitol
They turned the US Capitol into a craphouse.
Some invading rioters defiled the hallowed seat of democracy with their dung in their ill-fated effort to overturn the election, a source close to incoming Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) told The Post.
“Congressional staffers saw feces in the hallways,” the source said Friday.

Rioter Who Led Mob Up US Capitol Stairs is QAnon-Booster From Iowa
One of the rioters who stormed the US Capitol building is a QAnon-boosting Iowa man who was photographed facing off with cops in a tense moment, according to a report.
Doug Jensen, of Des Moines — who was captured on camera leading a throng of protesters into the building — is now a person of interest, police told the local station WHO 13.
On Thursday, Jensen posted footage of himself invading the Capital on Twitter with the comment, “Do you like my shirt?”
The shirt he’s wearing shows a large Q — a symbol for the far-right conspiracy theory group QAnon — along with the words “Trust the Plan,” a slogan for the group.

Rioter Who Lounged at Pelosi’s Desk, GOP Lawmaker Charged Over Capitol Siege
The rioter who gloated as he sat at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s desk — and a West Virginia lawmaker who filmed himself storming the US Capitol — were among those arrested Friday, authorities said.
Richard Barnett — who was caught in a now-infamous viral photo lounging back in Pelosi’s chair in her private congressional office with his feet up on her desk after he and the pro-Trump mob infiltrated the building — turned himself into a local sheriff’s office in Arkansas in the morning, said Fox affiliate KNWA.

Senator Josh Hawley Calls the Canceling of His Anti Big Tech Book “Orwellian”
Simon & Schuster announced that it will no longer publish The Tyranny of Big Tech, a book by Missouri Senator Josh Hawley. The publisher canceled the book because Hawley objected to the electoral college vote at the Capitol on Wednesday and was therefore seen by the company as an inciter in the storming of the Capitol building.

The Media Used This Week to Push for a Massive Social Media Purge
The response to Wednesday’s chaos in the US Capitol, stormed by supporters of President Trump unhappy with the way the November election was carried out (in their opinion, fraudulently) to eventually give victory to his opponent — seems to be putting extreme strain on the country’s democracy, particularly on the way free speech on the internet is not only allowed, or banned — but also viewed and treated.
Is it an inviolable and extremely valuable asset of a democratic society, or a commodity that can be tossed aside when it suits a political moment, or whim, as the media would like to suggest?

Three Foreign Nationals Charged With Conspiring to Provide Material Support to ISIS
The men were allegedly members of a group of ISIS supporters that carried out terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka on Easter Day in 2019, killing 268 people
The Justice Department announced today that three Sri Lankan citizens have been charged with terrorism offenses, including conspiring to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization (ISIS). The men were part of a group of ISIS supporters which called itself “ISIS in Sri Lanka.” That group is responsible for the 2019 Easter attacks in the South Asian nation of Sri Lanka, which killed 268 people, including five U.S. citizens, and injured over 500 others, according to a federal criminal complaint unsealed today.
The complaint outlines the defendants’ roles in the conspiracy and the events that led to near-simultaneous suicide bombings in the Sri Lankan cities of Colombo, Negombo and Batticaloa on April 21, 2019. One of the U.S. citizens killed was a Department of Commerce employee who had traveled to Sri Lanka on official business.
Two days after the attacks, ISIS claimed credit for the terrorist acts, attributing the murders to “Islamic State fighters.” In late April 2019, the then-leader of ISIS praised the attackers for what he called a retaliation against “the West” for defeating ISIS the prior month in Baghuz, Syria.

Twitter on Friday took the unprecedented step of banning President Trump’s world-famous account from the platform “permanently” — less than two weeks before he leaves office.

Twitter Boots Trump Allies Mike Flynn and Sidney Powell
Twitter on Friday suspended the accounts of President Trump’s allies, former Gen. Mike Flynn and lawyer Sidney Powell, who backed his claims that fraud handed victory to President-elect Joe Biden.
The action follows the Wednesday attack on the Capitol by a mob of Trump supporters after Trump told them to “fight like hell” to persuade Congress to overturn Biden’s win.

In his first address since the Capitol was stormed on Wednesday, President Trump appeared angry about how the events unfolded, and called the incident a “heinous attack,” promising that those who broke the law “will pay”, and noting that a new administration will be inaugurated in twelve days, with a peaceful transition of power.

Video footage shot in the nation’s capital appears to show a group of Trump supporters being locked inside their hotel by Metropolitan Police officers following Wednesday’s protests against the certification of electoral votes on Capitol Hill.

Why Trump Voters Don’t Trust the People Who Count the Votes
A Slate headline from December 13 reads: “82 Percent of Trump Voters Say Biden’s Win Isn’t Legitimate.” If even half true, this poll means tens of millions of Americans believe the incoming ruling party in Washington got its political power by cheating.
The implications of this are broader than one might think. Under the current system, if many millions of Americans doubt the veracity of the official vote count, the challenge to the status quo goes beyond simply thinking that Democrats are cheaters. Rather, the Trump voters’ doubts indict much of the American political system overall, and call its legitimacy into question.

Czechxit? Tricolor Movement Wants Regular Referendums on Leaving the EU
The Tricolor Citizens’ Movement political party (Trikolóra) aims to introduce regular referendums on withdrawal from the European Union every time there is a parliamentary election, which would significantly raise the chances of Czechxit occurring.
The movement embraced this point when modifying its election program. According to the chairman of the movement, Vaclav Klaus Jr. the reason for the change in the program was the simplification of the movement’s stance towards the EU.

Hungarians Launch Anti-Censorship Social Media Network
A newly launched Hungarian social media network claims it wants to create a censorship-free platform with a million users in a country of ten million people by the end of the year.
The new network, named Hundub, has attracted 40,000 subscribers so far after launching on December 6th, 2020, to a Hungarian audience. It is seen as a close homage to Facebook but has promised to provide users with an environment free of censors, beyond what is illegal under Hungarian law.

Labour Mayor Orders Removal of British Flags Put Up to Celebrate Brexit
A Labour party mayor who ordered the removal of British flags raised to celebrate Brexit has complained of racism, sparking a police investigation.
Mayor of Penzance Nicole Broadhurst, of the left-wing Labour party, had said 18 Union Jacks raised on flagpoles on Penzance Promenade in Cornwall by a private citizen or citizens to celebrate the end of the Brexit “transition” period and a true break between Britain and the United Kingdom and European Union — shortcomings in Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s deal with the bloc notwithstanding — would be taken down because they were not authorised by the authorities.

Police Fined Britons Paying Respects at Terror Attack Memorial
An English police force fined six people for taking part in a memorial to the 21 Britons killed in the 1974 IRA terror attack in Birmingham.
The JUSTICE4the21 campaign took part in a convoy on November 21st, 2020, for the 46th anniversary of the Birmingham Pub Bombings to remember the IRA terror attacks at The Mulberry Bush and The Tavern In The Town bars which claimed 21 lives and resulted in the injury of over 200 others. Pope Francis Issues Law Reorganizing Vatican Finances
VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis issued a new law Monday reorganizing Vatican finances following a series of scandals.
In a document issued Dec. 28, the pope formalized the transfer of financial responsibilities from the Vatican’s Secretariat of State to the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See (APSA), which functions as the Holy See’s treasury and sovereign wealth manager.
He first announced the shake-up in an Aug. 25 letter to Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin that was made public on Nov. 5 after the Secretariat of State was engulfed by accusations of financial mismanagement.
The pope promulgated the new law in an apostolic letter issued motu proprio (“on his own impulse”).

Scottish Minister Seeking to Ban Trump From Entering UK
Scottish Justice Minister Humza Yousaf advised UK Home Secretary Priti Patel to consider banning US President Donald Trump from entering in the future after a group of Trump supporters stormed Congress.
“Once he leaves Office if Trump tries to come to the UK the Home Sect should give serious consideration to denying him entry,” tweeted Yousaf, noting that the home secretary “has the power if an applicant’s presence is not conducive to the public good.”
Under UK law, a foreign citizen can be banned from entering if their “conduct, character,” or “associations” are deemed unsavory — even if they have no criminal record. Spanish Authorities Intervene at Nursing Home Rocked by COVID Outbreak Following Vaccine Jabs
A COVID outbreak was reported at the DomusVi Costa d’en Blanes residence for the elderly in Calvià, Mallorca after a screening on 3 January, prompting an intervention from authorities to stop the spread of the virus.

Migrant Crime Against Citizens Surges in German State
Crimes committed by migrants against natives in the German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are reportedly rising steadily.
Between 2016 and 2020, the number of cases involving German victims and foreign perpetrators rose by more than 60 percent, according to figures obtained by the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

In what some consider one of the most far-reaching social policy moves in the corporate world, the National Association of Realtors, called the nation’s largest trade organization, has revised its professional ethics code to ban “hate speech and harassing speech” by its 1.4 million members.
The sweeping prohibition applies to association members 24/7, covering all communication, private and professional, written and spoken, online and off. Punishment could top out at a maximum fine of $15,000 and expulsion from the organization.
Mary Wagner, a Buffalo real estate agent who is white and lesbian, says the move, announced in November, fits her vision for creating a fairer society. She predicts thousands of complaints this year, given the realtor association’s enormous size and the overheated climate of social media.

Leaving the Blight of Higher Education: Part II — Farewell, Faculty

The previous essay dealt with the moral decline of the student body in higher education—one of the motives behind my recent retirement after three decades of teaching college English. When I began teaching, most of the English faculty members, including the chair who hired me, had earned their doctorates in the late 1970s.
They were oleaginous liberals, naturally, but they were also ladies and gentlemen of actual education and considerable high literacy. They took it for granted that the purpose of a literature program was to bring to life in students the Intuition of Form or Imagination about which George Santayana writes in his Sense of Beauty. According to Santayana, “Imagination…generates as well as abstracts; it observes, combines, and cancels; but it also dreams.”
Imagination, Santayana writes, involves spontaneity; it strives toward “the supremely beautiful.”
As the Old Guard went into retirement, a cohort of new assistant professors filled the department’s tenure-track lines.
