Gates of Vienna News Feed 12/1/2020

A man deliberately drove a car at high speed through a pedestrian zone in the German city of Trier, killing five people (some reports say four) and wounding a number of others. There is no indication of cultural enrichment so far in the incident. The driver was identified as “Berndt W.” in some media reports, while others withheld any identification, since the driver was not the registered owner of the car. The perpetrator is said to have been extremely drunk when he committed the crime.

In other news, the Michigan state senate held a hearing today on alleged election fraud in last month’s voting.

The unemployment rate reached only two percent. Germany ranked second with a 3.2 percent unemployment rate, while Greece remained on the other end of the statistics with 17.3 percent.

“Don’t Leave Trash in the Desert”: Bizarre Utah Monolith Removed for Good

The bizarre metallic monolith that was discovered in a remote area the Utah desert has now been removed permanently by a group of hikers, one of whom reportedly said, “Don’t leave trash in the desert.”

Since the discovery of the monument last month and the subsequent revelation of its location, the site was slowly turning into a tourist hotspot, leading some environmentally aware activists to remove the object in the name of protecting the landscape.

The monolith vanished on the night of November 27, but a Facebook user called Ross Bernards explained how he witnessed precisely how the structure was toppled and taken away.

“Superforecasters” Now See 90% Odds 200 Million Americans Will be Vaccinated by October

With Moderna officially filing for expedited approval from the FDA yesterday, and Pfizer following up by announcing early Tuesday in the New York morning, With vaccine newsflow driving trading activity for yet another week, the team of analysts at Goldman Sachs has produced another handy guide to new developments in the race for a global vaccine.

Like the last update, Goldman’s latest piece focuses on where the top performers are in the process, and which countries and regions have a step up in the race to ‘reserve’ precious resources.

One interesting addition to this week’s chartbook is a summary of the ‘outlook’ for achieving ‘widespread vaccination’ in different parts of the world, featuring notable quotes from Dr. Fauci and Matt Hancock (the secretary of health in the UK).

Biden’s Pick for Budget Chief Scrubs Twitter History Ahead of Contentious Confirmation

With Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer calling on Congress to begin hearings on Joe Biden’s Cabinet picks before the inauguration while the results of the 2020 election remain in dispute, one nominee has already stoked controversy for peddling conspiracy theories and partisan attacks on Twitter — and is now deleting the evidence.

Neera Tanden, Biden’s pick for budget director, has deleted over 1,000 tweets in anticipation of a contentious confirmation vote. Many of the tweets were critical of GOP senators, whose votes she’ll need (assuming Republicans hold the Senate after two January runoff elections in Georgia).

In addition to spreading disinformation claiming that Russian hackers flipped votes to President Trump in the 2016 election — something Democrats currently stand accused of in the 2020 race, Tanden — a veteran Hillary Clinton aide and current president of the John Podesta-founded Center for American Progress — attacked Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) in a still active tweet — calling her “pathetic” for supporting Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination in the Senate (after Democrats accused him of operating a ‘rape gang’ in the 1980s).

Biden Press Secretary Seen Wearing Communist Hammer-and-Sickle Hat in Resurfaced Photo

Jen Psaki, Joe Biden’s newly named press secretary, is in hot water over the emergence of an old photo showing her wearing a hat with a communist hammer-and-sickle symbol on it.

The photo comes from 2014 when Psaki served in the Obama State Department, and shows her standing with then-Secretary of State John Kerry, as well as Russian ambassador Sergey Lavrov, and spokeswoman Maria Zakharova. Zakharova supposedly gifted the pink hat to Psaki, a practice the Biden team says is “tradition.”

In the wee hours of Thanksgiving Day, the Amistad Project of the Thomas More Society filed an explosive election lawsuit asking Michigan’s Supreme Court to prevent Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson from certifying the election results until the Michigan legislature can fully investigate fraud claims and to force election officials to hand over all election materials to the legislature for this purpose. The lawsuit claims that officials illegally counted or threw out no fewer than 508,016 ballots, far more than Joe Biden’s 154,000-vote margin over Donald Trump.

Trump Ballots Defaulted and Switched to Biden on Dominion System: Maricopa GOP Chairwoman

Authored by Isabel Van Brugen via the Epoch Times (emphasis ours)

Maricopa County GOP chairwoman Linda Brickman on Nov. 30 testified before members of the Arizona State Legislature that she personally observed votes for President Donald Trump being tallied as votes for Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden when input into Dominion machines.

Brickman, the GOP head of one of the country’s largest counties and a veteran county elections worker, submitted her testimony in a sworn affidavit under penalty of perjury. She testified that she and her Democratic partner witnessed “more than once” Trump votes default and shift to Biden when they were entering votes into Dominion machines from ballots that couldn’t be read by machines.

She alleged that she was later threatened by election supervisors at the Maricopa County Tabulation and Election Center (MCTEC) for speaking out about what she had witnessed.

White House Slams AG Barr’s Claims of No Election Fraud: “There’s Been No Semblance of a DOJ Investigation”

Update (1500ET): That did not take long. The President’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani has issued a stateent:

Statement of Trump Legal Team on Bill Barr’s Comments on Voter Fraud

“With all due respect to the Attorney General, there hasn’t been any semblance of a Department of Justice investigation. We have gathered ample evidence of illegal voting in at least six states, which they have not examined. We have many witnesses swearing under oath they saw crimes being committed in connection with voter fraud. As far as we know, not a single one has been interviewed by the DOJ. The Justice Department also hasn’t audited any voting machines or used their subpoena powers to determine the truth.

“Nonetheless, we will continue our pursuit of the truth through the judicial system and state legislatures, and continue toward the Constitution’s mandate and ensuring that every legal vote is counted and every illegal vote is not. Again, with the greatest respect to the Attorney General, his opinion appears to be without any knowledge or investigation of the substantial irregularities and evidence of systemic fraud.”

For that reason, UK Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden has joined those who want Netflix to make it absolutely clear that this work of fiction is just that, fearing that otherwise, the perception of the royal family might suffer irreparable consequences by people taking every twist of plot and dialogue as factual representation of what had happened.

Florida Gov Slams Lockdown-Advocates as “Today’s Flat-Earthers”

Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis told reporters Monday that public schools will remain open despite the parabolic rise in COVID-19 cases, according to AP News.

“Closing schools due to coronavirus is probably the biggest public health blunder in modern American history,” the governor said at a news conference.

“People who advocate closing schools for virus mitigation are effectively today’s flat-earthers.”

DeSantis said the state’s public school system would remain open while pointing out countries like Sweden, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland all kept children in schools despite the rapid spread of the virus in their respective countries, adding that these European countries kept their schools open without negative consequences.

PM Viktor Orban Becomes Longest Ruling Hungarian Prime Minister Ever

On Nov. 30, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban — first sworn into that position on July 6, 1998 — has beaten the previous record holder, Kalman Tisza (1830-1902), as the country’s longest-serving head of government, conservative news and opinion portal Mandiner writes.

Scotland’s Sturgeon Hints at Legal Move if Independence Vote Blocked

LONDON (Reuters) — Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon on Monday ramped up her calls for a new Scottish independence referendum, declining to rule out another vote next year and hinting she might go to court for permission to hold one if London tried to block it.

Scots rejected independence in 2014 but Brexit and the British government’s handling of the COVID-19 crisis have bolstered support for secession, with most polls showing a majority now favour breaking away from the United Kingdom.

Switzerland Referendum on Human Rights, Environment Violations Fails

GENEVA — A proposal that could have stiffened penalties against companies based in Switzerland if they violate human rights or harm the environment abroad failed in a Swiss referendum on Sunday.

The initiative titled “Responsible companies — to protect people and the environment” won a narrow majority of votes, with 50.7% percent backing it and 49.3% against, but failed because a majority of the country’s cantons, or states, came out against it. Support was strongest in urban areas, much of Switzerland’s French-speaking west and Italian-speaking Ticino.

Under Switzerland’s system of direct democracy, which gives voters a direct say several times each year on a variety of issues, proposals need a majority both of votes cast and of cantons to pass. The Swiss held two other referendums this year, but one in May was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The driver, a 51-year-old local man, has been arrested. The prosecutor said the suspect had drunk a significant amount of alcohol.

Authorities said they were not working on the assumption that the incident was politically or religiously motivated.

The city’s mayor described the scene as “horrible”.

Witnesses said people screamed in panic and some were thrown in the air by an SUV travelling at high speed in Trier’s Brotstrasse and Simeonstrasse streets towards the city’s famous Roman gate, the Porta Nigra.

The incident happened at around 13:45 local time (12:45 GMT), and the suspect drove for 1km (0.62 miles) “hitting people at random on his way” before being stopped by a police car, Trier police spokesman Karl-Peter Jochem said earlier.

The victims were three women, aged 25, 52 and 73. Police said the 45-year-old father of the baby was also killed. His wife and one-year-old son were injured and admitted to hospital.

[…]

Footage posted on social media appeared to show the presumed driver being held by several officers next to the damaged car. Police have been questioning the suspect, who was alone, and has been identified by German media as Bernd W…

UK Minister: You Might be Banned From Venues Without Vaccine Passport

The UK’s new vaccine minister Nadim Zahawi has said that while coronavirus vaccinations will not be mandatory, Britons may be barred from going to the cinema or getting on an aeroplane without it if service providers demand proof of inoculation.

Conservative MP Nadim Zahawi is the newly-appointed Minister for COVID Vaccine Deployment and will oversee the rollout of the vaccination in England.

UK Towns Use Coronavirus to Justify Mass Surveillance of Residents’ Personal Details

Xantura, a private data analytics company, has signed highly lucrative and by the looks of things highly privacy-invasive deals with local governments in British towns, whose goal is to spy on residents who might be breaking Covid rules.

The profiling program, dubbed OneView, is supposed to track people in order to predict who is most likely to get infected with the virus by not obeying lockdown rules.

Xantura boasted that it had millions of pieces of data collected during its previous 12 years of working with local councils — and that this is now a set big enough to make its algorithms “incredibly accurate.”

UK: Boris Faces Massive Tory Rebellion Over Coronavirus Restrictions

Boris Johnson is facing a rebellion of up to 100 Conservative MPs planning to vote against putting 99 per cent of England under the top two strictest coronavirus measures.

The prime minister’s proposals from last week revealed that despite England being under a month-long lockdown during November, more of the country will find itself in a higher tier coming out of shutdown than going in, with just Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly, and the Isle of Wight in Tier 1.

UK: Boris Johnson to Repeal Election-Busting Law That Almost Scuppered Brexit

A David Cameron-era law that left Britain’s government paralysed and Brexit at the mercy of what transpired to be an unrepresentative Parliament is being repealed, returning a small part of the UK constitution to the long-term historical norm.

The Fixed-Term Parliaments Act is set to be repealed by Boris Johnson’s Conservative government just nine years after it was voted into power by another Conservative Prime Minister, David Cameron. The law, which changed the way general elections were called from being events that could either be voluntary by the government or forced on them by events, to being fixed on a permanent five-year cycle, was passed during the 2010 coalition government to appease the junior governing partner, Nick Clegg’s Liberal Democrats.

UK: Cornwall Police Will Hold Back Hoard of Thirsty Anglos Seeking Beer After Lockdown

Police in the south-west of England will be patrolling Cornwall when it goes under Tier 1 restrictions on Wednesday after reports that thirsty Englishmen may be on their way to Cornish pubs to sup without being subject to strict Tier 2 coronavirus rules.

Cornwall — which while part of England, sees itself as culturally distinct like other Celtic communities in the British Isles like Wales — is one of a very small number of places not to be thrust into strict coronavirus measures after the lockdown ends on midnight on Wednesday. Only Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly, and the Isle of Wight are under the lowest Tier 1, with 99 per cent of the rest of England under the stricter Tiers 2 and 3.

UK: Gove Claims Government Not Considering ‘Vaccine Passports’ To Enter Venues

Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove contradicted his own government’s vaccine minister by asserting that there were no plans to issue ‘vaccination passports’ that would be required before people were allowed to enter bars, restaurants and other venues.

As we highlighted yesterday, during an interview on BBC Radio, UK vaccine minister Nadhim Zahawi suggested that the NHS ‘track and trace’ app would be used to digitally store information about whether a person has been inoculated or not.

“I think you’ll find that restaurants and bars and cinemas and other venues, football stadiums, will probably also use that system,” said Zahawi.

Warsaw’s Morawiecki-Orban Meeting: We Are Open to New Proposals From the EU

It was the second face-to-face meeting between PMs Mateusz Morawiecki and Viktor Orban in five days. Polish government spokesman Piotr Muller stated that both PM Morawiecki and President Duda are also in constant contact when it comes to international affairs.

“We are open to new proposals. We underline that the agreement concerning the budget must be in accordance with the treaties and the conclusions of the July summit,” he announced.

The meeting focused on coordinating the two countries’ position concerning the budget. Poland’s and Hungary’s position is clear, as confirmed by the joint declaration made by the PMs in Budapest last Thursday. Both countries have looked into different versions of a possible agreement and are still awaiting the German presidency’s proposal.

Australian Citizen Finally Released From Jail After Egypt Arrest for Hitting “Like” On a Political Post

An Australian citizen has finally returned home after spending 10 months in a prison in Cairo over a Facebook post. The Egyptian government continues to ignore human rights and is notorious for arbitrarily detaining human rights activists and critics.

Early this year, in January, Waled Youssef visited his family in Cairo. However, he did not get to spend time with family as planned as he was arrested and sent to Tora Prison in Cairo.

Youssef was detained by local police while sightseeing with his family. The officers went through his belongings and scrolled through his Facebook timeline. He was then accused of being a member of a banned political group because he had liked a post by a former presidential candidate, who has been in prison since the last election.

China to Enjoy Better Post-COVID Economy Than All Other Major Nations

The OECD has revealed that China is set to enjoy a post-COVID economic recovery that outstrips every other major country, most of which will see debilitating drops in their GDP.

“A graph proposing GDP projections for various nations and areas showed that China was the only nation on the list to enjoy real GDP growth in 2020, with 1.8%, 8% in 2021 and 4.9% in 2022,” reports Sputnik.

“In comparison, the United States, having suffered a 3.7% drop in 2020, is set to achieve 3.2% and 3.5% real GDP growth in 2021 and 2022 respectively.”

“The United Kingdom, compared to most countries on the Outlook’s graph, got affected more heavily suffering a GDP reduction of 11.2% in 2020, with only Argentina showing worse results — 12.9% drop.”

Farage: China is ‘Licking Its Chops’ At the Thought of a Biden Presidency

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is “licking its chops” at the thought of a Joe Biden presidency, warned Brexit leader and longtime ally of President Donald Trump, Nigel Farage.

Mr Farage argued that China “has ruined the world in 2020” through its handling of the Wuhan coronavirus, for which it should be forced to pay “very heavy reparations”. Yet, he predicted that with Joe Biden preparing to ascend to the presidency, the CCP will continue its push for global supremacy.

Report: Nike, Coke, Other Companies Lobbying Against Bill That Would Ban Goods Made With Slave Labor of Uighurs in Xinjiang

The Times opted for the term “forced labor” in this story for reasons I don’t understand. The oppression of Uighurs by China isn’t limited to telling them which jobs they need to work. The infringement on their liberties is total. Their existence is at the sufferance of Beijing. It’s a full-spectrum slave regime, replete with concentration camps.

One might think corporate America, normally so quick to flash its woke consciousness during cultural disputes in the United States, would draw the line at honest-to-goodness slavery being practiced by the government of its manufacturing base. After all, some of these companies have devised whole advertising campaigns around the idea that sometimes you need to do what’s right even if it hurts your bottom line.

German Government Supports Rejected Asylum Seekers Instead of Reallocating Funds to Citizens, AfD Reports

Anyone who does not pay their radio license fees in Germany has to expect the relentless harshness of state authorities. On the other hand, foreigners who are obliged to leave the country but fail to do so have less to fear. Authorities often grant them a “Duldung,” which means that they can continue to live in the German welfare state without fear of deportation.

As Junge Freiheit reported, the AfD parliamentary group wanted to do something about the government’s sloppiness and use an effective lever against individual states and municipalities that deal with the enforcement of this foreign policy. The party wanted to erase federal payments made so far in connection with rejected asylum seekers. But in the “adjustment meeting” of the budget committee on Friday night, after which the members of the government coalition boasted about their uncompromising approach, the AfD attempts failed completely.

The parliamentary group sought to cut 4.4 billion euros from the budget of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs of Hubertus Heil (SPD).

Hungary Will Never Become a Migrant Country, Says State Minister Menczer

Hungary will never accept taking in masses of migrants who could later decide on the fate of the country instead of its native population, State Minister at the Foreign Ministry Tamas Menczer said at a meeting of Parliament’s national security committee.

Menczer’s remarks are in response to multi-point strategy “drawn up by pro-migration bureaucrats” which would see migrants provided with housing and voting rights, according to a new proposal put forward by the European Commission last week. The proposal calls for migrants to be given rights for “full economic, social, cultural and political participation” across the European Union and to offer more influence to pro-migrant NGOs in national and local decision-making.

NASDAQ to Require One Woman and One Minority or LGBTQ on Company Boards

Today in “affirmative action for public company boards“ news…

In a move that does little to help either diversity or equality, NASDAQ is now pushing for SEC approval of a rule that would require public companies on its exchange to have at least one woman director and one “diverse” director — meaning a director that self-identifies as an underrepresented minority or LGBTQ. You know, like how Elizabeth Warren “self-identified” as Native American.

Oddly enough, there’s still no requirement that Board Members need to know how to read financial statements. But, we digress.

The exchange is also pushing for its more than 3,000 companies to be forced to report “data on board diversity” or “face consequences”, including having to publicly explain why they haven’t done so. Also known as public shaming.
