$100 Fine: Gatherings of More Than Three People on Sidewalks Banned in DC Suburb Arlington County, Va Over Coronavirus Concerns

Gatherings of three or more people on sidewalks and streets were banned by the Arlington County Board on Friday to enforce social distancing measures to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 China coronavirus. Pedestrians could be fined up to $100 for that and for violating a six foot social distancing order.

Arlington County is located in Northern Virginia across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., with the historic city of Alexandria on its southern boundary. In recent decades the county was transformed into a dynamic mix of young couples raising families, hipster singles and immigrants accompanied by strong business development. The five members of the Arlington County Board are all elected Democrats.

Boston Marathon Bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s Death Sentence Overturned by Appeals Court

BOSTON (Reuters) — A federal appeals court on Friday overturned Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s death sentence for helping carry out the 2013 attack, which killed three people and wounded more than 260 others.

Tsarnaev and his older brother set off a pair of homemade pressure-cooker bombs near the finish line of the world-renowned race, tearing through the packed crowd and causing many people to lose legs.

A three-judge panel of the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld much of Tsarnaev’s conviction but ordered a new trial over what sentence Tsarnaev should receive for the death penalty-eligible crimes he was convicted of.

U.S. Circuit Judge O. Rogeriee Thompson, writing for the court, said the trial judge “fell short” in conducting the jury selection process and screening jurors for potential bias following pretrial publicity surrounding the high-profile case.

Thompson said the pervasive news coverage of the bombings and their aftermath featured “bone-chilling” photos and videos of Tsarnaev, now 27, and his brother carrying backpacks at the marathon and of those injured and killed near its finish line.

Thompson said the judge deemed jurors eligible who had “already formed an opinion that Dzhokhar was guilty — and he did so in large part because they answered ‘yes’ to the question whether they could decide this high-profile case based on the evidence.”

Thompson stressed the ruling’s limits. “Make no mistake: Dzhokhar will spend his remaining days locked up in prison, with the only matter remaining being whether he will die by execution,” she said.

While all three judges agreed the death sentence should be overturned, U.S. Circuit Judge Juan Torruella said he believed Tsarnaev was also denied the right to a fair trial when the judge declined to let the case be tried outside of Boston…

Court Overturns Death Penalty for Boston Marathon Bomber

A federal appeals court on Friday overturned the death penalty for the man responsible for the Boston Marathon bombing that killed three people and injured more than 260 others.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his brother, Tamerlan, detonated two bombs at the finish line of the 2013 Boston Marathon. While Tamerlan was killed during a shootout with law enforcement, Dzhokhar was apprehended following a massive manhunt and is currently being held at a high-security prison in Florence, Colorado.

A three-judge panel of the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ordered a new penalty-phase trial, saying the judge presiding over the trial did not thoroughly screen jurors for potential biases.

Judge O. Rogeriee Thompson assured that the court’s ruling had no bearing on Tsarnaev’s freedom.

Ocasio-Cortez Refers to St. Father Damien Who Served Lepers and Died of Leprosy as “White Supremacist Culture”

This woman is so toxic — and stupid.

Not a good combination.

Democrat thought leader Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez referred to Saint Fr. Damien as an example of “white supremacist culture.”

St. Damien of Molokai, also called Father Damien, from Belgium, devoted his life to missionary work among the Hawaiian lepers and became a saint of the Roman Catholic Church.

AOC slanders the Catholic saint who devoted his life to lepers as an example of “white supremacism.”

Trump Says He Will Ban TikTok From U.S. Through Executive Action as Soon as Today

President Trump late Friday told reporters that he will ban popular Chinese-owned video app TikTok from the United States as soon as today.

The president said:

“As far as TikTok is concerned, we’re banning them from the United States. I have that authority … It’s going to be signed tomorrow.”

Trump said he could use an executive order or emergency economic powers.

TikTok, the wildly popular short-form video social media platform, is owned by ByteDance, a Chinese company. Due to the iron grip the Chinese Communist Party has over all aspects of life in China, including business, it is believed that TikTok is likely funneling vast amounts of user data to the Xi Jinping’s government, posing a significant national security threat. The company denies it.

Turkey’s Brain Drain: Why Youths See No Future There

Turkey’s Islamist president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, once declared his political mission as “raising devout (Muslim) generations.” Research in recent years has shown that Turkish youths have defied Erdogan’s most ambitious social engineering project.

Konda, a pollster, found in 2019 that Turkish youths were less likely than the wider population to identify themselves as “religious conservative.” They were less likely to fast, pray regularly or (for females) cover their hair. Ipsos, an international pollster, found that only 12% of Turks trust Islamic clerics. SODEV, another pollster, found that 60.5% of youths that support Erdogan said they would prefer to live in Christian Switzerland with half the salary they would earn in Muslim Saudi Arabia. SODEV’s study also found that 70.3% of respondents think a talented youth would never be able to get ahead in professional life without political/bureaucratic “connections,” i.e., without a hidden touch of nepotism. And only 30% of them think one could freely express his opinion on social media.

The Genocide That Never Ends: Turkey, Azerbaijan Renew Threats to Armenians

By Marshall Moushigian

Chances are good that you awoke this morning to the unpleasant sound of an alarm clock. Chances are certain that you did not wake to the unpleasant sound of Azerbaijani artillery shells crashing through your roof. But if you are Armenian living along Armenia’s border with Azerbaijan or in the yet-to-be-recognized Republic of Artsakh (formerly Nagorno Karabagh), you did suffer such a rude awakening.

To understand today and tomorrow, we must understand yesterday. Artsakh is a region that traces its Armenian roots to the fourth century AD. When Armenia and Azerbaijan were independent, from 1918 to 1920, Azerbaijan recognized Artsakh as part of Armenia. However, when the Soviet Union subsumed these two countries, Joseph Stalin, then the Commissar of Nationalities, gave Artsakh and her Armenians to Azerbaijan. Time and again the Armenians of Artsakh petitioned Moscow, unsuccessfully, for reunification with Armenia.

The Christian Armenians of Artsakh were second-class citizens of Soviet Azerbaijan. Tensions came to a head in 1988 with a near-unanimous vote for reunification. This enraged the Muslim Azeris and they pounced on the Armenians living in the Azeri cities of Baku and Sumgait. Armenians who weren’t killed were driven out. Full-scale war ensued and, given the ethnic bonds between Azeris and Turks, it was obvious that what was happening to the Armenians of 1988 was the same tragedy that befell the Armenians of 1915 — genocide. The war ended in 1994 with the Azeri army vanquished, and sovereignty for the Artsakh Armenians…

China Floods Affect 54.8 Million People, Inflict US$20 Billion in Losses

China’s reports of deaths, damaged homes suspiciously low given scale of disaster

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The massive floods which have ravaged China over the past two months have inflicted a heavy toll on the communist country in terms of damages to property and direct economic losses, with the vaunted Three Gorges Dam seemingly inadequate in reducing these effects and the death toll remaining suspiciously low.

After two months of torrential rains and tremendous flooding across the Yangtze River, Yellow River, and Huai River, China’s state-run media mouthpiece Xinhua on Wednesday (July 29) cited the Ministry of Emergency Management as saying that the “rain-triggered floods” have affected 54.8 million people in 27 provincial-level regions as of Tuesday (July 28). Despite the vast scale of the disaster across China over two months, the government is reporting a miraculously low 158 dead or missing.

Immigrants Account for Majority of New Coronavirus Cases in Denmark

Denmark is currently seeing its largest spikes in COVID-19 daily infection figures since mid-May.

91 new coronavirus cases were registered by the Danish health authorities on Thursday, while the daily number of new cases has been creeping up throughout July (from 18 new cases per day at the start of July to 41 by last week), Danish Radio reported.

Immigrants make up the majority of the new cases, Danish Radio reported. Out of the 247 new cases registered during week 30, 59 percent were immigrants. As this group makes up only 14 percent of the total population, this constitutes a large over-representation. People with origins in Iraq, Morocco, Israel and Jordan make up the majority of cases.

13 thoughts on “Gates of Vienna News Feed 8/1/2020

  1. I can’t find much sympathy for the Karen in NJ who was assaulted by another woman after whining about her not wearing a mask. Hopefully the police do not find the woman who assaulted her; the assaulter is allegedly black so the police probably will not look too hard. In the future, when confronted by such a Karen it would be wise to first put on a mask in order to make identification more difficult before proceeding to administer some wall to wall remedial training in minding one’s own business.

If someone really has such a concern over contracting the Wuhan Virus then they need to be the ones staying home and isolating from everyone else. There are any number of ways to conduct one’s business without having to be in public and inconveniencing everyone else who does not have the same fear or concern.

    • Not really, Moon. I was taken off the “shielding” list in June (no idea why, my meds are the same, and-alas-I haven’t suddenly got younger); could get food delivered by a charity rather than government agencies, but I still wouldn’t get my preferred choices, which involve more than one chain and an independent butcher (better meat, and nothing halal). One can only eat so much white bread and tins of baked beans. Individual orders online would not be enough for free delivery.

If I can manage a mask (which I know is more about protecting others than myself) on public transport and in shops, is it really too much to ask others to do so?

    • Those who are against abortion need to rethink how they frame their activism if they actually want to convince women to stop aborting their babies.

If abortion was instead encouraged from a white supremacist viewpoint as being a positive thing because it results in far less future orcs of every pigmentation being born, then the resulting backlash by those who actually believe the BLM bovine defecation would have the desired effect of more ignorant women of color refusing to abort because of the racist overtones which would now be associated with such an act.

Incidentally, Margaret Sanger was a proponent of eugenics, birth control, and abortion for precisely this reason. I happen to agree, and every ghetto-momma who has an abortion is likely saving lives since their now aborted future hood rat will not be shooting innocent kids in drive-bys or not so innocent gang bangers when the aim is a little better. Also, that is that many fewer robberies, rapes, beatings, knifings, overdoses from badly cut drugs, etc and that isn’t even counting the fortune saved from having to incarcerate mommy’s little treasure for all the years between criminal acts until another hood rat shoots him in a drive by.

  2. While I don’t care much for sports, I do find it worthy of respect the example the NHL has chosen to make of respect for the flag and each other by all standing in unity for the national anthem. Contrast this to the poor example set by almost every other sports league.

The obvious observation is that the difference between the NHL and almost every other sports league is that hockey is almost exclusively a white dominated sport in contrast to black domination of every other major team sport. Still, I am very pleased with the decision of the players to show respect for their country instead of groveling on their knees like every other sports league. If they keep it up I might even consider watching some hockey games.

    • They didn’t stand for the anthem. They stood for “social justice.” “I think everyone in the league stands with those guys,” Colorado forward Matt Nieto said. “There’s just no room for racism in our sport or any sports or just in general for that matter.”

J.T. Brown, who raised his right fist during the anthem prior to a game in 2017 when with the Tampa Bay Lightning, said on Twitter he applauded “this great start” from Dumba.

“Moving forward, teammates shouldn’t let teammates fight this battle alone,” Brown tweeted. “We always show up for each other on the ice, this shouldn’t be any different.”

Earlier this week, Avalanche center Nazem Kadri said standing together with Minnesota players prior to an exhibition game was a good sign of solidarity, but he called for more than just gestures.

“We’re trying to make the game more diverse, and the diversity in the game doesn’t happen with racism still going on, so that’s an important thing for us to address,” Kadri said. “As players we have addressed that. From a league standpoint, I think we’d maybe like to see a little more acknowledgement and having them address the situation and know that they stand with their players.”

  3. Karen?
I know some women whose names are Karen. They would find that very offensive [epithet] pretending to be James Bond.

    • It (Karen) is an easily understood shorthand for a particular kind of obnoxious (usually) short-haired suburban white female that seems to think the world revolves around her and her precious brats.

      Get over it.

  4. Hey! I guess we should learn to savor small victories like these:

A Slovak-speaking man of African descent (the article specifically says “Afroamerican”, but that could be just the editor’s misguided attempt at being polite) was forcibly ejected from the Budapest-Prague express train EC 280 “Metropolitan” after “attempting to spark a racist incident”.

According to the onboard personnel, the story went like this: In the dining car, the man ordered ham & eggs (“hemenex”, as Czechs and Slovaks transcribe it), which is traditionally served with a slice of sourdough rye bread (*). The passenger objected, demanding a white bread roll instead. The server informed him that white bread is available, but it costs extra. The passenger refused to pay extra, instead he called the server racist, started insulting the server and other passengers – all the while recording the whole incident on his phone.

The train personnel wouldn’t have any of that nonsense, so they called the police, removed the troublesome passenger at the next station (Břeclav) and handed him to the police. He wasn’t arrested, but the incident caused one hour delay, for which he was fined 16.000 crowns (just a bit over 700 USD; that’s about net monthly wage of unqualified manual workers in Czechia). He threatens to sue for racism.
