France’s ‘Generation COVID’ Faces Bleak Future With Jobs Scarce

PARIS (Reuters) — In September, Eugenie Fillon should begin a two-year master’s degree in luxury hotel management that combines academic studies with a salaried apprenticeship. The problem: during the worst economic downturn in decades, hotels in France aren’t hiring.

If the 22-year-old fails to secure a placement, not only will she be deprived of a starting income and on-the-job experience. She will also be on the hook for fees worth 18,000 euros.

“Normally there are job offers out there. But there have barely been any since the crisis struck,” Fillon said, as she scoured online job ads on a park bench in Nantes, in the west of the country.

After a Lawsuit by Residents, San Francisco Finally Cleans Homeless Camps Out of the Tenderloin District

The coronavirus pandemic was (and still is) a potential disaster for the homeless. In San Francisco, the city was forced to reduce the number of homeless people in each of the city’s shelters to prevent them from becoming hotspots for the virus. But doing that meant a lot more people living on the streets. In the Tenderloin district, the number of tents went from 158 on March 3 to 391 by May 1. Even the police officers who normally handle drug-dealing in the area were pulled out creating a defacto lawless zone, a homeless version of Seattle’s CHOP. And just as happened with CHOP, local residents quickly got fed up and filed a lawsuit against the city.

Virginia Giuffre Ordered to Destroy Files That Contain Names of Epstein Associates

Epstein accuser Virginia Giuffre has been ordered by a US District Judge to destroy files that contain names of the billionaire sex trafficker’s associates because they were improperly obtained.

Senior US District Judge Loretta Preska also said that Giuffre’s attorneys will need to provide proof that the documents have been destroyed and that, “Counsel shall submit an affidavit detailing the steps taken to do so.”

“Preska’s ruling came after a request by attorney Alan Dershowitz to gain access to the documents. Giuffre has claimed that Dershowitz was one of the men Epstein forced her to have sex with. In response, Dershowitz sued Giuffre for defamation in 2019. Dershowitz claimed that obtaining the Epstein files would be an asset to his defense,” reports Newsweek.

“Preska said in her ruling that Dershowitz’s desire to see all of the files “with over a thousand docket entries” was not a “targeted strike” but a “carpet bombing.”

The documents, which run to some 2,000 pages long, apparently contain hundreds of names of people linked to Epstein.

Italian Antitrust Chief Blasts ‘Tax Havens’ Within the EU

Fiscal dumping by Netherlands, Luxembourg, Ireland — Rustichelli

(ANSA) — ROME, JUL 2 — Roberto Rustichelli, the head of the Italian antitrust authority, said Thursday that the fiscal polices of the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Ireland made them “authentic tax havens within the eurozone”.

He told a Lower House committee that these countries conduct “aggressive fiscal practices that damage the economies of the other member States and, in part thanks to these practices, register very high growth rates”.

He said that, at the moment, the EU’s legislative framework has led to “a disparity in the competition conditions of the market between member States” as it allowed “fiscal and contribution dumping between countries”.

Rustichelli said that, while Italy’s GDP has grown 5% in the last five years, Ireland’s has risen 60%, Luxembourg’s 17% and the Netherlands 12% in the same period.

He said that companies moving their tax bases to other European countries was hitting Italy hard.

“Some studies estimate that, due to unfair fiscal competition at the European level, the Italian tax authorities lose the possibility to tax over 23 billion dollars of profits,” he said.

“11 billion of profits are moved to moved to Luxembourg, over six billion to Ireland, 3.5 billion to the Netherlands and over two billion to Belgium.

“This leads to damage to Italy that can be estimated to amount to between five and eight billion dollars a year”.

Rustichelli said that this means demands for fiscal frugality from countries such as the Netherlands should be seen in a new light.

“This situation takes on an additional problematic consequence in the case in which countries that support these unfair fiscal practices demand budget tightening from the countries they drain resources from,”he said.

North Adriatic Relies on Team Working, Germans Are Welcome

Veneto, Emilia Romagna, and Friuli VG share TV campaign

(ANSA) — JESOLO, 01 LUG — Three hundred kilometers of the coasts of the Upper Adriatic are working together to convince German and Austrian tourists to return immediately to Italy for their summer holidays. The governors of the Veneto Region, Luca Zaia, along with Stefano Bonaccini, governor of Emilia Romagna, and Massimiliano Fedriga, governor of Friuli Venezia Giulia, launched the first joint promotional campaign this morning from the three cities symbol of hospitality, relaxation, entertainment and summer nightlife in the Northern Adriatic area: Jesolo (Venice), Cesenatico (Forlí-Cesena) and Lignano Sabbiadoro (Udine).

The three regions have decided to work together to relaunch Italian tourism on international markets, through a joint strategy. For the first time, they will jointly promote their holiday offer on the German market as a single destination with many opportunities. The enhancement of this “Italian tourist macro area” is entrusted to a TV campaign on the most famous German weather forecast site (wetter.com) and on national private generalist TV channels, under the claim “Friaul, Venetien und Emilia Romagna, die italienische Adria. Nichts liegt näher!” which means “Friuli Venezia Giulia, Veneto and Emilia Romagna, the Italian Adriatic Riviera. Nothing is closer!”. A claim that focuses on ease of access to Italian beaches that can be reached both by car and by plane.

In Jesolo, Zaia chose a symbolic place for the launch: the Cavalieri Palace, already renamed the “The Germans’ Hotel”, which was “stormed” by tourists from Germany at the beginning of June, when the borders of the EU reopened. The alliance between the three regions of the Northern Adriatic Sea has a symbolic meaning also from a political point of view. To support the economy, those who until a few months ago were fierce rivals have become loyal allies to attract millions of Germans who make up the core of the GDP of the Riviera and a large part of the country.

The truce had already occurred in the lockdown phase, when Zaia and Bonaccini united in a common front against the government to manage the health crisis, and speed up the reopening of production activities, and regional and national borders. The governors underlined that the three regions of the Northern Adriatic Riviera are the ones that have been able to best deal with the impact of the infections and the coronavirus crisis in Northern Italy.

Spain Sees 49% Drop in Furloughed Workers Since Lockdown Peak

(Bloomberg) — An average of 178,000 workers have been exiting Spain’s furlough program every week to return to their jobs, a sign that the economic recovery is slowly gathering pace in a country that’s expected to suffer one of Europe’s deepest recessions this year.

The daily exodus has accelerated as authorities gradually lifted a strict nationwide lockdown that crippled Europe’s fourth-largest economy. There were around 1.75 million workers in the furlough scheme as of July 1, Social Security Minister Jose Luis Escriva said, a decline of almost 50% from the 3.4 million enrolled at the height of Spain’s confinement at the end of April.

On average, the number has been falling by about 5% each week since then, said the minister, a former official at the European Central Bank and the Bank for International Settlements. That’s a faster rate than countries such as France and Belgium, according to data compiled by his ministry, which oversees the scheme.

Study Finds Czechia Has the Best Manufacturing Conditions in Europe

According to a study by the commercial real estate services firm Cushman & Wakefield, the Czech Republic has the most favorable conditions for expanding manufacturing, ranking fourth in the global index. Better conditions are only found in China, the United States, and India.

The Czech Republic’s success was mainly caused by its low level of risk, excellent location, and low operating costs. This year, the ability to restart the economy after the coronavirus crisis was also evaluated and Czechia succeeded in this parameter too.

Since 2016, when the Czech Republic was first included in the ranking, it has been one of the most suitable destinations for manufacturing companies and their operations.

Croatia: The Country Toward the Vote, Uncertain Outcome

Elections on Sunday, concerns about the resurgence in infections

(ANSA) — ROME, JUNE 29 — Croatia is approaching the general election next Sunday amid growing tension due to the strong growth in coronavirus cases. Uncertainty about the outcome of the vote remains high, as there is substantial equality between the two main political sides. Many parties, including the main opposition force, a large center-left coalition, have suspended all pre-election activities involving direct contact with voters. Some question the legitimacy of the election, arguing that many citizens would desert the polling stations, whereas for those in self-isolation it is unclear whether they will be able to vote. According to polls, the center-left coalition, led by Davor Bernardic’s Social Democrats, would win 29.3% of the vote, while the conservatives led by the outgoing Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic are given 28.4%. The center-left coalition is slightly ahead with 60 probable MPs, against 56 for the conservatives. But neither side would reach the majority of 76 MPs (out of 151). For this reason, the result of the nationalist right-wing, grouped in the Patriotic Movement, led by the famous singer Miroslav Skoro (11%, according to polls), will be decisive. Skoro has not ruled out a post-election coalition with the conservatives but on the condition that Plenkovic, whom he considers too centrist and pro-European, will resign as prime minister. The center-left looks to the liberal center (around 3%) and the Greens (5%). Even a “grand coalition” between the two main political formations cannot be ruled out. The latter solution, anyway, would be considered if the other post-election possibilities failed, and in the presence of an intense second wave of the coronavirus, that would prevent the return to the polls in the autumn.

China Never Reported Existence of Coronavirus to World Health Organization

Contrary to claims from both Chinese officials and the World Health Organization, China did not report the existence of the coronavirus in late 2019, according to a WHO timeline tracking the spread of the virus. Rather, international health officials discovered the virus through information posted to a U.S. website.

The quiet admission from the international health organization, which posted an “updated” timeline to its website this week, flies in the face of claims from some of its top officials, including WHO director general Tedros Adhanom, who maintained for months that China had informed his organization about the emerging sickness.

    • Over the centuries and especially the last few decades the Muslim settlers find it really satisfying to simply ignore local
everything. Regardless of their in-your-face fifth column (sic) constant open armed warfare Islam by ideology and “religion” gets generous quotas into every level of government. So why should they even bother to try. The noose tightens. For the love of money and what’s left.
