Gates of Vienna News Feed 7/28/2020

Armed residents of Minneapolis have begun patrolling their neighborhoods and setting up checkpoints since the city council voted to dismantle the municipal police department. Meanwhile, more than a hundred police agencies have cancelled their plans to help with security at next month’s Democrat convention in Milwaukee, because the local police force has been hobbled by new rules on crowd control.

In other news, 65 out of 94 migrants who were rescued in the Mediterranean and brought to Malta have tested positive for COVID-19.

“End Racism” To be Stenciled on NFL End Zone Borders for All Season Home Openers

The National Football League has announced its plans to stencil the phrases “It Takes All of Us” and “End Racism” on all of the teams’ end zone borders for their home openers this year. The plan is part of the league’s efforts to demonstrate its commitment to social justice issues in wake of the recent racial unrest in the country.

14 Colleges in NY Likely to ‘Perish’ In Coronavirus Pandemic, New Analysis Says

More than a dozen colleges and universities in New York state are among those most likely to “perish” amid the coronavirus pandemic, according to a new analysis.

According to the Boston Business Journal, experts have predicted 10% to 20% of U.S. higher education institutions may be forced to close permanently within the next 12 months. Many colleges were struggling financially before Covid-19, and now many face a loss of revenue if fewer students are on campus to pay for room and board.

CYPRESS HILLS, Brooklyn (WABC) — Two innocent teenagers have died after another bloody weekend in New York City amid the surge in shootings across the five boroughs, with seven homicides on Sunday alone.

The drive-by shooting in Brooklyn happened while the victims were playing basketball in the Cypress Hills section.

The shooting happened at the George Walker Jr. Park on Vermont Street just before 6:40 p.m. when a dark colored SUV drove up, and one or more persons opened fire from the sunroof.

AG Barr Defends Sending Federal Agents to Portland: ‘Since When is it Okay to Burn Down a Federal Courthouse?’

In testimony before the House Judiciary Committee Tuesday, Attorney General William Barr fired back at Democrats, including Rep. After officially gaveling in the session, Nadler “opened the hearing by reading off a laundry list of Barr’s perceived transgressions,” according to the Daily Mail, accusing Barr of everything from interfering in a number of federal investigations to derailing Democratic efforts to create a national mail-in voting system.

All Hell Breaks Loose in Memphis… 400 Teens Destroy Putt Putt Center

A mini-golf complex got flooded with hundreds of kids after a mass parent drop-off, who then started wreaking havoc when they couldn’t get their money back … so say cops, anyway.

This went down Saturday night at the Putt-Putt Fun Center in Memphis, where police officers responded to call for service over reports of chaos breaking out after several different parents left upwards of 300 to 400 children at the facility, who began destroying the joint.

One of the teens ripped up the plexiglass at the front desk and threw it at the workers, and then proceeded to hurl even more objects … which helped kick off a stampede and more destruction. There was even a firework that was set off — just pure mayhem, really.

Big Tech Companies Wants to be More Heavily Involved in the Next Pandemic

The coronavirus saga isn’t over and yet Big Tech, who have heavily benefited from the lockdowns, is already thinking about its response to the next one.

The Consumer Technology Association (CTA), including big tech companies such as Microsoft and Facebook, launched the Public Health Tech Initiative this week.

Apart from the aforementioned Big Tech companies, healthcare giants such as CVS Health, Northwell Health, and the American College of Cardiology will also be joining hands in the Public Health Tech Initiative. The sole purpose of the initiative is to understand how the current technology has tackled the initiative, where the scope for improvement lies, and to then to supposedly develop recommendations to better deal with upcoming health crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bill Gates: With Private Messaging We Can’t “Intervene” In Removing Conspiracies and “Misinformation”

Bill Gates — the man who co-founded Microsoft and gave the world Windows, one of the least secure operating systems in the history of computing — is unsurprisingly not one to overly concern himself with security, or privacy. In fact, he would gladly throw end-to-end encryption under the bus in order for fuller control to be achieved over people’s online communications.

Other than these days being a prominent vaccine influencer, Gates also has strong opinions about online misinformation, and what to do about it, as he has told CNBC.

Chinese Student Visa Holders Suspected of Espionage in 25 Cities

In an effort to combat Chinese espionage in the United States, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has recently launched a nationwide investigation aimed at Chinese student visa holders suspected of having undisclosed Chinese military ties.

FBI officials interviewed Chinese student visa holders in more than 25 American cities—an initiative that some experts call the largest known crackdown since the United States and China restored diplomatic relations in 1979.

Chinese espionage via student visa programs has become an increasing threat to the nation’s national security. Many of these students have direct ties to Chinese military and its ruling Communist Party and are sent to acquire knowledge of U.S. technological, military, and cyber operations.

CNN was among a number of named media companies and individuals who either were or are defendants in the case. The Washington Post settled last week.

Man Arrested for Driving Through Protest Crowd, But With a Couple of Big Twists

By this point, we’ve sadly grown used to stories about some motorist who finds themself trapped in the middle of a street that’s been shut down by a Black Lives Matter protest. When rioters begin to menace them, the frightened driver punches the gas and begins knocking down or running over demonstrators in an effort to flee for their lives. A similar — and yet very different — scene played out this weekend in the tiny town of Eaton, Colorado (population 4,365), located well to the north of Denver. But the details of the vehicular assault mark it as an incident nearly the opposite of almost all the ones you’ve been hearing about this year.

First of all, the protest in question wasn’t a Black Lives Matter march. It was a Blue Lives Matter demonstration in support of law enforcement officials. Also, the driver in question hadn’t been blockaded in the middle of the street. The protest was taking place on the grassy field of a local park. And the motorist wasn’t “fleeing in terror” from anyone. He deliberately steered his SUV off of the street and went crashing across the park to intentionally run down the demonstrators. (CBS Denver)

Vermont Law School Gives Artist 90 Days to Remove Mural Deemed Offensive

SOUTH ROYALTON — The Vermont Law School Board of Trustees has given an artist 90 days to remove a controversial mural depicting slavery before the school itself will remove it.

The decision, announced Friday evening after the board met that day, varied slightly from an earlier statement this month from VLS President and Dean Thomas McHenry that it would “paint over” the mural by artist Sam Kerson. McHenry had previously noted that many in the VLS community now find the mural “offensive” because of its depictions of African Americans.

Painted and installed in the VLS Chase Community Center in 1993, “The Underground Railroad, Vermont and the Fugitive Slave” “celebrates the efforts of black and white Americans in Vermont and throughout the United States to achieve freedom and justice,” Kerson’s website says.

Polish Liberal Opposition Demands Election Re-Run After Losing to Duda

Despite previously promising to accept the results of the presidential election, liberal Civic Platform (PO) candidate Rafal Trzaskowski’s staff have filed an election protest to the Supreme Court demanding a second election after losing to conservative nationalist Andrzej Duda.

The main accusations the opposition has filed in its protest are an unconstitutional election date and the government’s involvement in Duda’s election campaign, according to Poish news portal Niezalezna.pl.

Duda, the presidential candidate from the nationalist Law and Justice party (PiS), won the election earlier this month with 51 percent of the vote to Trzaskowski’s 49 percent.

“We will not question the results of the elections. Rafal Trzaskowski will never do so, and neither will I,” said the chief of Trzaskowski’s election staff Cezary Tomczyk on July 14, 2020.

UK: Environmentalism’s Radical Next Generation is Already Here

This past week, a new group calling itself Beyond Politics (BP) threw buckets of bright-pink paint at the entrances to the London offices of four global NGOs, including Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace.

“We have no words to describe our disgust,” messages left at the scene told their targets. “We accuse you of appeasing radical evil.”

BP accuses NGOs of not taking the issue of climate change seriously enough. “In the face of this monstrosity, what have you done? F*** all that’s meaningful.”

This somewhat pathetic green-on-green hostility has yielded little media attention, but it illustrates the global environmental movement’s bizarre and longstanding contradictions.

The high-profile case shocked Sweden after the public learned that the murderer dismembered the teen’s dead body and stored her head wrapped in plastic and aluminum foil inside his closet. The rest of her body still has not been found despite an extensive search involving thousands of police and volunteers.

Although the court has decided to proceed with sentencing the migrant just over a month ago, it had not revealed how long he would spend in prison as it waited for the results of a forensic psychiatric examination. However, the psychiatric experts’ statement indicates that Tishko does not suffer from any disorder that would prevent him from being sentenced to life in prison.
