Brazil Economic Rebound Much Stronger Than Many Had Expected: Economy Ministry Official

BRASILIA (Reuters) — Brazil’s economic recovery from the depths of the COVID-19 crisis is proving to be much more robust than many observers had predicted, in large part due to the government’s emergency measures, Economic Policy Secretary Adolfo Sachsida said.

Speaking to Exame Research in an online event broadcast on Wednesday, Sachsida said all the forecasts for a fall in gross domestic product of 6.5% or more this year will have to be revised, and the downturn will be much closer to the government’s projected —4.7%.

European Parliament Rejects Recovery Plan Over Climate-Funding Cuts

The European Parliament rejected on Thursday (23 July) the hard-won decisions of the EU Council.

‘V’ Good? How Britain’s Economic Recovery is Shaping Up

LONDON (Reuters) — Britain’s economy has started to recover from its coronavirus lockdown but signals about a rise in unemployment are raising doubts about how much momentum is building behind the rebound.

Bank of England Chief Economist Andy Haldane has described the shape of the economy as “so far, so V”, albeit with big risks ahead.

But many economists say the most recent data represents a release of pent-up demand rather than the beginning of a sustained recovery.

Federal Agents Likely Permanently Blinded by Portland Protesters’ Lasers, White House Says

Three federal agents who were sent to Portland, Ore., to try to help quell the city’s violent protests were “likely left permanently blinded” from clashes, White House officials said Friday.

“A federal agent’s hand was impaled by planted nails, another federal agent was shot with a pellet gun, leaving a wound deep to the bone, and tragically, three federal officers were likely left permanently blinded by the rioters using lasers pointed directly into their eyes,” White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany told reporters Friday.

All five of the injured federal agents were hurt Monday during ongoing protests at the Multnomah County Justice Center and a nearby federal courthouse in Oregon’s largest city.

If COVID Fatalities Were 90.2% Lower, How Would You Feel About Schools Reopening?

The CDC has instructed hospitals, medical examiners, coroners and physicians to collect and report COVID-19 data by significantly different standards than all other infectious diseases and causes of death.

These new and unnecessary guidelines were instituted by the CDC in private, and without open discussion among qualified professionals that are free from conflicts of interest.

These new and unnecessary guidelines were additionally instituted despite the existence of effective rules for data collection and reporting, successfully used by all hospitals, medical examiners, coroners, and physicians for more than 17 years.

As a result, elected officials have enacted many questionable policies that have injured our country’s economy, our country’s educational system, our country’s mental and emotional health, and the American citizen’s personal expression of Constitutionally-protected rights to participate in our own governance.

This paper will present significant evidence to support the position that if the CDC simply employed their 2003 industry standard for data collection and reporting, which has been successfully used nationwide for 17 years; the total fatalities attributed to COVID-19 would be reduced by an estimated 90.2%, and questions would be non-existent regarding schools reopening and whether or not Americans should be allowed to work.[…]

Judge Denies Request to Stop US Agents From Making Arrests in Portland

A federal judge on Friday denied a request from Oregon’s attorney general to stop federal agents from arresting people in Portland as daily protests and demonstrations over systemic racism and police brutality roil the city.

U.S. District Judge Michael Mosman, a George W. Bush appointee, found that state Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum (D) lacked standing to sue the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on the demonstrators’ behalf.

Mosman decided that Rosenblum failed to prove Oregon had an interest that was separate from those of private citizens and that the state relied on “purely hypothetical” arguments about the risks facing Oregonians. He also shot down the argument over the “chilling effect” on the speech rights of Oregon residents that Rosenblum cited, saying it was not a state-specific issue.

Officials: People Should Report Any Unsolicited Packages From China That Contain Seeds

Do NOT plant these seeds. The types of seeds in the packages are unknown at this time and may be invasive plant species, officials said.

RICHMOND, Va. — Several Virginia residents have reported receiving unsolicited packages from China that contain seeds.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services sent out a news release urging residents to not plant the seeds.

Officials said the type of seeds in the package is unknown at this time and may be invasive plant species.

The packages were sent by mail, and may have Chinese writing on them.

A viewer sent 13News Now photos of a package she received by mail. The photo showed a postmark from China. Inside was a plastic bag filled with black seeds.

VDACS encourages anyone who has received unsolicited seeds in the mail that appear to have Chinese origin to contact the Office of Plant Industry Services (OPIS) at 804-786-3515 or email ReportAPest@vdacs.virginia.gov.

Officials said invasive species wreak havoc on the environment, displace or destroy native plants and insects and severely damage crops.

The Council legislation gives officers no ability to safely intercede to preserve property in the midst of a large, violent crowd.”

Antifa in Canada: An Origin Story

This is the first part of a series about the rise of Antifa in Canada.

A decade ago the term “Antifa” would have sounded strange and unfamiliar to most Canadians. Today, it has become a part of political discourse in national and international politics.

Much has been written about the origins of Antifa, but how did it spread into Canada?

People familiar with the group will readily tell you that the movement was inspired by militant anti-fascist movements that sprung up during the interwar period following the rise of Benito Mussolini’s National Fascist Party.

Supporters of the movement will even say that the group continues to carry the same essential mantle: to battle and oppose the spectre of fascism. However, as the decades passed and the vestiges of fascism were discarded into the ugly dustbin of history, Antifa has grown even more violent and bold in its tactics.

Without the direct dual threat of nazism and fascism threatening the stability of the world, Antifa’s scope of activity and membership has broadened in today’s era. Much of Antifa’s contemporary sloganeering and messaging is directed at capitalism and the structure of contemporary Canadian society itself.

Canada Approves “Glory Holes” For Safe Sex During Pandemic

The British Columbia Centre for Disease Control’s website has an entire section dedicated to sex education during the virus pandemic. Deep within, government leading health experts suggest “glory holes” could be the safest technique to minimize virus spreading during sex.

“Use barriers, like walls (e.g., glory holes), that allow for sexual contact but prevent close face-to-face contact,” the Canadian CDC wrote.

As defined by Urban Dictionary, a “Gloryhole is a hole made in a thin wall or other type of partition where a man can insert their penis for sexual stimulation by an anonymous person on the other side.”

The crowdsourced online dictionary for slang words also said these holes “can be found in bathrooms in the stall wall, in private rooms found in adult bookstores, and in dark rooms and labyrinths in bathhouses. Open rooms in bathhouses with many gloryholes are called a sucktorium and often have a raised level on one side of the holes to allow everyone to stand.”

Canadian CDC also suggests “masturbation” and “virtual sex” are the best methods for getting turned on during the pandemic. Still, at the same time, it allows one to practice safe sex social distancing. If one is to “masturbate with a partner(s), physical distancing will lower your chance of getting COVID-19,” health officials added.

Of course, the internet went crazy, here’s what people had to say about top Canadian officials advising the public to use “glory holes.”

Try ‘Glory Holes’ For Safer Sex During Coronavirus, B.C. CDC Says

B.C. health officials are recommending an age-old, occasionally cutting-edge tactic for sex during the coronavirus pandemic: “glory holes.”

The B.C. Centre for Disease Control added new recommendations for socially distant sex to its COVID-19 website this week. One of those tips was to try using a “glory hole” — a hole cut into a wall that’s only large enough for a penis to slip through.

Glory holes are typically used for anonymous oral or penetrative sex, according to Urban Dictionary, but they’re also an excellent way to limit physical contact during intercourse, the B.C. CDC says.

“Use barriers, like walls (e.g., glory holes), that allow for sexual contact but prevent close face-to-face contact,” the health organization writes on its website.

Britons Must Now Wear a Mask at Stores by Law, But Big Supermarkets Refuse to Enforce New Rules

Shoppers caught at stores without a face covering now face a £100 fine in England and can be removed “with force” if they refuse, but major chains are refusing to enforce the rule to avoid confrontation, and major police federations have called the idea of officers forcing masks on people “absurd” and “unrealistic”.

Compulsory mask-wearing in many indoor public spaces took effect on Friday, weeks after the change was announced by the government and despite claims by senior government figures earlier on in the pandemic that mask-wearing was not effective and pointless for the general public. Those found shopping without a mask would face a £100 fine, and although they would not be arrested the BBC reports those who refuse to leave premises could be removed “with force” by police.

France’s Cathedrals on Fire: ‘The Final Stage of De-Christianization’?

A leading curator of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, Keith Christiansen, was criticized for posting on Instagram a painting of Alexandre Lenoir saving France’s monuments from the ravages of the French Revolution. Christiansen wrote:

“Alexandre Lenoir battling the revolutionary zealots bent on destroying the royal tombs in Saint Denis. How many great works of art have been lost to the desire to rid ourselves of a past of which we don’t approve. And how grateful we are to people like Lenoir who realized that their value — both artistic and historical — extended beyond a defining moment of social and political upheaval and change”.

Christiansen was criticizing the current removal and desecration of historic monuments. He could not have known that, a few weeks later, another French cathedral would be vandalized and an ancient organ, which had survived Lenoir’s revolutionary zealots, destroyed by the blaze.

UK: Jury Tampering Allegations Made After Cop Killers Convicted of Lesser Manslaughter Charge

The trial for the killing of PC Andrew Harper has been referred to the Attorney General over possible jury tampering after three laughing teenagers were found guilty of manslaughter rather than murder for the death of Police Constable Harper, who was dragged behind the youths’ car for over a mile.

On Friday, Henry Long (19), Albert Bowers (18), and Jessie Cole (18) — all members of the local Traveller “gypsy” community — were all found not guilty of the murder of PC Harper, who was 28 at the time of his death. Harper died after his ankles were caught in a tow rope attached to the back of the car which was driven by Long on Thursday, 15 August 2019.

“Career criminal” Long — the ringleader of the group — had already confessed to manslaughter, while Bowers and Cole were found guilty of manslaughter by a jury. The guilty men will be sentenced next Friday. While they still face life sentences, it is expected that they will serve significantly less time behind bars than if they were convicted of murder.

The three young men were seen laughing and smirking throughout the trial of the brutal killing and one of the trio even fell asleep while details of how the police officer died were read out in court, according to The Telegraph.

      • Because if you are afraid of a virus that kills less than 0.5% of the infected, you can stay home.
