Gates of Vienna News Feed 7/19/2020

The never-ending saga of Gates of Vienna’s site migration has taken a new, dismaying twist: the new mail server won’t send SMTP email under the same settings as used in the old server.

New emails have been arriving, which is good. They include some of the missing messages from yesterday. However, I can’t reply to anybody at this point.

To make matters even worse, my phone service went out on Friday. The phone and the Internet arrive at Schloss Bodissey on the same skinny little copper wire, but for some reason voice quit working. There was no thunder and lightning, and no power outage. The phone just decided to quit.

I opened a repair ticket via the Internet. The phone company has promised to send a technician no later than 5pm on Tuesday July 21. They don’t care. They don’t have to care. They’re the phone company.

So the situation is now Murphy Squared. I had been communicating with the hosting company by email. The only way I can send communications to the outside world now is via skype or carrier pigeon. Neither of those helps me deal with the hosting service, and my bandwidth is too limited for their “chat” to work properly. So I have to wait for the phone company droid to get here.

Oy vey.

Bank of England Governor Signals Central Bank Digital Currency is Coming

As confirmed by several economic outlets, including Bloomberg, Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey took part in a VTALK with students this past Monday for Speakers for Schools. When the subject of digital currency came up, Bailey said:

“We are looking at the question of, should we create a Bank of England digital currency. We’ll go on looking at it, as it does have huge implications on the nature of payments and society. I think in a few years time, we will be heading toward some sort of digital currency.

“The digital currency issue will be a very big issue. I hope it is, because that means Covid will be behind us.”

Whilst only a short quote, there are several strands to pick up on here.

The Housing Crisis of 2020: Millions of Americans Missed Their Last Rent Payments, And Tens of Millions Could Soon be Evicted

In the months ahead, millions of Americans will fall so far behind on their rent payments that they will be facing eviction.

And millions of other Americans will fall so far behind on their mortgages that they will be in serious danger of losing their homes.

According to Emily Benfer, we could potentially see a total of “20 million to 28 million people” get kicked out of their homes in the months ahead…

“F*** the Peaceful Protests” Shouts Angry BLM Leader at Portland Rally (Video)

The emboldened terrorists are no longer hiding their true feelings. What used to be kept behind a PR friendly veil of “we don’t condone violence” is now out in the open. Not only are they openly saying they want to abolish the United States, but they are now calling for violent protests, shouting “F*** THE PEACEFUL PROTESTS!”

At the same rally where they called for abolishing the U.S.A., president of “non profit” Don’t Shoot Portland, Tai Carpenter, took to the microphone to go on her own deranged rant, and repeatedly condemned peaceful protesting, essentially saying her protests need to be violent. She explains that calling for peaceful protest is “an exercise in All Lives Matter bulls***!”

“They Just Take and Take” — AOC Aims to “Soak the Rich” With Proposed New York Wealth Tax

Despite the critical role she played in dissuading Amazon from bringing its “HQ2” to Queens (it was one of two sites chosen by the company after more than a year of searching), AOC triumphed over all of her Democratic primary opponents, including former CNBC reporter Michele Caruso-Cabrera.

And earlier this week, a progressive Democrat successfully primary-ed longtime Democratic incumbent in a district that encompasses parts of the Bronx and Westchester.

Although not every AOC-approved candidate in NYC has achieved this much, the city’s outsize community of mostly white college-educated “socialist organizers” has emerged as a political force capable of outmatching NYC’s ossified Democratic machine (shriveled after nearly 8 years of de Blasio’s ineptitude) Mayor De Blasio might be a committed progressive, but he’s not down for the revolution, man. The rose-emoji crew want to ensure that city offices are occupied by candidates that they approve. Which is why mayor-in-waiting Scott Stringer shouldn’t count his chickens before they hatch.

Leftists Flip Out as Feds Descend on Portland to Bring Peace to the Streets — Democrat Leaders Blame Trump for Violence While Ignoring BLM Rioters

In the wake of the George Floyd death, the protests and riots in most cities ground to a halt after a week so. But not in Portland. Portland has been protesting literally every night since late May. Many of these protests devolve into unlawful assemblies as violent leftists start to throw rocks and other debris at police, and it’s not uncommon for the police to declare these riots.

But mayor Ted Wheeler, governor Kate Brown, and the Portland police command staff seemingly let the rioters take the city, as police are told to stand down and not impede the mob as businesses are destroyed and looted, fires are started in the streets, random bystanders are assaulted, and government buildings are vandalized and set on fire.

Paleontologists Discover New Species of Marsupial in Brule Formation

STARK COUNTY, N.D. — Paleontologists unearthed five species of ancient marsupials, including one brand new, previously undiscovered species, in the Brule Formation on two ranches near Dickinson.

These marsupials from the oligocene — roughly 30-32 million years ago — are similar to tiny opossums, about the size of a field mouse or a pocket-sized tree possum native to modern South America, North Dakota Paleontology Society senior paleontologist Clint Boyd said.

The new species is distinct from previously discovered species because of the shape of its teeth, which are only about 1-2 millimeters in size. The difference between what they observe of one species to the next can come down to an extra cusp on a tooth.

Nearly half of respondents of a national poll conducted by Morning Consult are just fine with the name of NFL team The Washington Redskins. However, it turns out that far more Americans believe the name ought to remain than those who prefer a more culturally sensitive name. According to the poll, 49 percent of respondents believe the Redskins should keep their nickname, with only 29 percent in favor of the upcoming change and 22 percent unsure.

‘Hands Off Hagia Sophia’: Italy’s Far-Right Salvini Leads Protest Against Transformation of Museum Into Mosque

Matteo Salvini, leader of the far-right League party, has lead a demonstration in Milan calling for Italy to cut funding to Turkey over its decision to transform the Hagia Sophia museum into a mosque.

Turkish authorities have announced the monument, originally built as a Christian basilica 1,500 years ago, will now function as a mosque, and Christian symbols will be concealed with curtains during prayer.

Standing outside the Turkish consulate in Milan with around 60 protesters, Salvini said, “ It is not possible that Islamic extremism wipes out centuries of history, of rights, of freedom, of conquests and it is not possible that the Turkish regime allows itself to transform churches into mosques with nobody saying anything.”

Kuwait: Man Drinking Camel Urine Stirs Controversy

KUWAIT CITY, July 19: A widely circulated video clip, showing a man drinking camel urine has sparked widespread controversy between two teams, the first being a supporter which talked about its benefits, especially medicinal value, while the opponents look at it as uncivilized behavior saying health benefits cannot be verified, reports Al-Rai daily.

While the camel urine is being promoted as treatment for hair loss and related problems, the medical and legal debate continues about the feasibility of using this urine and allowing its sale, after the price of two-in-one packages reached 30 dinars, amid severe medical warnings that its use may lead to Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).

Medically, family medicine specialist Dr. Ahmad Muhammad Abdul-Malik told Al-Rai that “the ads claiming this urine softens the hair are all false allegations and wishful thinking.

There is no scientific evidence, he said, that the camels urine softens hair, and whoever suffers from dry or brittle hair should treat it in the correct manner through scientific diagnosis by the doctor, because it may be caused due to a certain vitamins deficiency, minerals or infections of the scalp.

Preventive medicine health doctor, Dr. Abdullah Behbehani, expressed his reservation regarding using the camel’s urine, based on WHO’s warnings that it might transmit of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (Corona MERS)”, stressing that there are no scientific studies which prove benefits of the urine of camels compared to modern drug treatments although there are some separate studies and researches here and there.

As for Sharia point of view, the former Dean of the Faculty of Sharia and Islamic Studies, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Abdul-Ghaffar Al- Sharif, affirmed in a statement to Al-Rai that “the majority of scholars said about the purity of camel urine. Scientific researcher in the jurisprudence encyclopedia, scholar Abdullah Najib Salem said the use of camel urine is an old habit, not new to recover from some diseases.

He concluded by saying it is rumored among the people in folk medicine to use this urine, but many doctors deny this, therefore selling or using it depends on the opinion of doctors

West Bengal: Vehicles Torched, Cops Injured in Violence After Gang Rape and Murder of Hindu Student by a Jihadi Rapist

Hindu Mob torches vehicles, attacks police in Bengal after teenager’s alleged ‘rape and murder’’by a Jihadi goon, ‘Feroze Ali.

Sandhya Bista | HENB | Siliguri | July 19, 2020:: Chopra in Muslim majority North Dinajpur district in north Bengal turned into a battleground on Sunday afternoon, hours after a 15-year-old Hindu girl was allegedly raped and murdered by a ‘TMC goon’ named Feroze Ali with his some suspected associates. But police under the control of Jihadi Didi WB CM Mamta Banu is trying to paint the gang rape & murder in another way by saying the post mortem revealed that she died of poisoning.

The girl, Mumpi Singh, sister of a BJP booth president had appeared for the class 10 state board examination and passed successfully this year. The victim went away from without anybody’s notice and found unconscious, 700 meters away from her home under a tree at road side, where bicycles and some mobile phones were also found. Police told that a bottle of poison was also found there.

Local people torched three government buses and two police vehicles and vandalised a number of other vehicles. Shouting “we want justice,” the mob also attacked policemen while Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders took up the issue alleging that the girl belonged to a family of BJP supporters and thus became a target of goons backed by the ruling Trinamool Congress party.

At least 30 people, including some police personnel, were injured in the pitched battles. Tension was palpable in the area till late evening.

The area where the alleged rape and murder took place comes under the Chaturagaj at Sonapur gram panchayat area of Chopra block in North Dinajpur under Darjeeling Lok Sabha constituency. She was found by the roadside early in the morning, around 700 metres away from her home, and taken to Chopra hospital and subsequently to Islampur sub-divisional hospital where doctors pronounced her dead.

The family of the victim claimed that some mobile phone and two cycle of the suspected murderers, Feroze Ali and his associates, were recovered from the spot but a police officer who requested anonymity said “A bottle of poison was also found.”

Mysterious that police was not interested to get the antecedents of the owners of the recovered two bicycle and some mobile phones at the spot of the ‘rape & murder’ but tried to implicate the case with a finding a poison bottle. But, Police was not sure whether it is a case of suicide by taking poison or a cold blooded murder after rape by poising!…

Global Times’ Editor-in-Chief Answers if “There Will be a War Between China and the US”

In addition to occasionally provocative but mostly dreadfully unimaginative propaganda tweets, the editor in chief of China’s Global Times Hu Xijing represents a useful barometer of sentiment among Beijing’s top power echelons, which in a time when a new cold war has broken out between the US and China, can prove rather valuable.

Which is why the following episode is rather informative in terms of how China views the current tit-for-tat in diplomatic and tech warfare between the two superpowers. In an op-ed in his Global Times, Hu Xijin writes that toward the end of his dialogue with Qiu Zhenhai, a Phoenix TV commentator on Friday night, in a video chat about the current US crackdown on China, a netizen asked: Will there be a war between China and the US?

Here’s what Hu responded:…

Hong Kong’s ‘Young Democrats’ Hope to Blitz Upcoming Elections

Hong Kong’s so-called “young democrats” are racing to sign up as candidates for a key legislative election despite concerns they could be disqualified because of their anti-China stance, Reuters reportedSaturday.

The young democrats favor a more confrontational position against China. Many of them won big in an unofficial “primary” election earlier this month.

Seduced by China’s Honeytrap Spies: Book That Lays Bare How Deeply the Chinese Have Infiltrated Britain Reveals How They Steal Intelligence Using Blackmail, Money… and Sex

Londoner Ian Clement learned the hard way not to trust the Chinese regime. He was in Beijing for the 2008 Olympics, on an official visit as Deputy Mayor of London, Boris Johnson’s number two, when he was approached by a gorgeous girl at a party.

It was a honey trap, ‘the oldest trick in the book,’ as he later recalled, but he threw caution to the wind and followed her lead.

After a couple of glasses of wine, he asked her back to his hotel room. He later awoke from what he believes was a drugged sleep to find she was on her way out of the door and his room had been ransacked. ‘My wallet was open. She had plainly gone through it but I knew she wasn’t a simple thief because nothing was missing.’ The contents of his BlackBerry had also been downloaded.

Advertiser Alliance, Media Companies, And Big Tech to Collude and Create a Definition of “Hate Speech”

The Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM), an alliance of advertisers, media companies, and Big Tech, have decided to find a mutual definition of “hate speech”. Social media companies have been under heavy criticism from politicians and legacy media outlets over their hate speech policies in recent times and GARM hopes that a mutual definition of hate speech across the industry will help address the supposed issue of moderation.

GARM was created in 2019 during the Cannes Lions Festival to help members with brand safety. Members include Big Tech companies such as Google, Facebook, and Twitter, legacy media companies such as NBC, and big advertisers such as Unilever and Procter & Gamble.

Advertising associations such as the Interactive Advertising Bureau and the Association of National Advertisers, and executives from ad agencies are also part of the alliance.

Kick the Culture War Off Campus

Colleges and universities have been a bastion of liberalism and progressivism for so long it’s a cliché. But that cliché has led to complacency. Conservatives don’t like that college campuses have always been hotbeds of bad ideas — from communism to anti-Semitism to the so-called “critical theory” behind woke-ism. But the campus left has rarely been more than an irritant. Conservatives on the whole haven’t taken radical professors, brainwashed students and cowardly university administrators seriously because they were unserious people spouting unserious ideas.

Indeed, serious people on the left usually treated the academic left with the same kind of head-patting indulgence as everyone else. Since the 1960s, campus progressives had stopped bombing buildings, and instead spent their time making up words to show off their virtue, like “womyn,” “Latinx,” and “cis-gender.” The scholarship produced by woke academics in nonsense fields like anti-racism, critical gender theory, and ecofeminism never spilled out into broader political or cultural debates. Colleges were dismissed as sandboxes where children played and occasionally fought, but never did any real damage. The expectation was that, however outrageous college woke-ness was getting, no one would ever take it seriously in the real world, so there was no need to pay much attention.

That turned out to be a mistake.

Now we know that at least some of the children and adults steeped in the anti-American, anti-Christian, anti-truth narrative behind the “Awokening” do indeed take it seriously. Some have taken it so seriously they have launched a nationwide crime wave.
