Gates of Vienna News Feed 6/9/2020

The California government says it will allow movie theaters to reopen on June 12, with restrictions. Meanwhile, a statue of Christopher Columbus was torn down and thrown in a lake in Richmond, Virginia. Also, a spokesman for George W. Bush said that reports that Mr. Bush will not support the re-election of Donald Trump are complete fabrications.

In other news, Hungarian police say that 300 illegal migrants attempted to cross the border over the weekend.

60 Million U.S. Coronavirus Cases Were Prevented by Lockdowns, Study Claims

The nationwide lockdowns prevented 60 million coronavirus cases in the United States, according to research from UC Berkeley published on Monday. The study concludes that the lockdowns had large health benefits.

To put that number in perspective, the CDC estimates that there were 60.8 million H1N1 (swine flu) cases during the 2009 pandemic.

The 60 million refers to total cases, but due to limitations in testing, they conclude the lockdowns prevented 4.8 million confirmed cases nationwide.

If we go by the CDC’s latest best estimate for the overall fatality rate (0.26%) that means the 60 million infections prevented saved 156,000 lives. At the time of this writing, there have been just over 110,000 coronavirus deaths in the United States.

According to the study, lockdowns in the United States, China, South Korea, Italy, Iran, and France prevented a total of 530 million infections. Prior to the lockdowns, infections were growing an average of 38 percent daily, doubling roughly every two days, but the lockdown policies slowed the spread.

Alarmists: No ‘Climate Justice’ Without Defunding the Police

Climate alarmists have upped the ante once more, insisting global warming is directly tied to law enforcement and therefore “climate justice” cannot be achieved without defunding the police.

“It’s impossible to disentangle the various threads of environmental racism and its ties with policing,” writes Brian Kahn, managing editor of Earther. “The history of redlining and police-enforced segregation has led to massive hotter neighborhoods and more people with chronic health problems tied to air pollution.”

Coronavirus Sparks ‘Insane’ Evacuation From NYC, Movers Say, As Residents Head South

New York City, the metropolitan area hardest hit by the domestic coronavirus outbreak, is losing residents at an unprecedented clip, according to local moving companies.

Criminology Researcher to Lose Sixth Paper

A criminologist whose work has been under scrutiny for a year is set to have a sixth paper retracted, Retraction Watch has learned.

Last July, Justin Pickett, of the University of Albany at the State University of New York, posted a 27-page explanation of why he was asking for one of his papers to be retracted. The paper in question had been co-authored by Eric A. Stewart, a professor at Florida State University, whose work had been questioned by an anonymous correspondent.

Following pickup of the story by The Chronicle of Higher Education, that paper was eventually retracted, along with four others Stewart co-authored. But that was not the end of the tale.

Stewart is now having another paper retracted, this one from 2003 in Justice Quarterly. The paper, titled “School social bonds, school climate, and school misbehavior: A multilevel analysis,” has been cited 186 times, according to Clarivate Analytics’ Web of Science.

Democrats’ Calls to Defund the Police Are a Losing Bet at the Poll

Democratic lawmakers, operatives, and commentators are calling for the defunding or abolition of America’s police departments in the wake of officer Derek Chauvin’s killing of unarmed black man George Floyd.

While the proposal is popular among the party’s progressive activist wing and on Twitter, it faces a hard wall of resistance among the wider public. A recent YouGov poll showed that fewer than 20 percent of Americans of all parties supported any cutting of police funding—a finding consistent with decades of polling.

FBI Combing Through Social Media After People Openly Brag About Looting on Facebook

Anyone logging into social media lately has likely noticed a seeming deluge of virtue signaling related to the ongoing Black Lives Matter and George Floyd protests. Often the same people who a mere days before were lecturing others to “stay home, save lives” amid the pandemic, have made a seamless switch to urging others to take to the streets in protest.

But a CBS Chicago affiliate has uncovered something truly new: people are now openly bragging about what they’ve looted from ravaged stores on Facebook over the past two weeks of BLM protests and riots. Apparently they’re even trying to sell the stolen goods.

“Selling looted goods on Facebook — CBS 2 found it’s happening right now, with several videos and photos sent our way,“ the CBS 2 report begins. “We sent the evidence to Chicago Police, and on Monday night, CBS 2’s Tara Molina looked into what will happen next — with the CPD and the FBI investigating.”

Four Eyeless Animal Species Discovered in Dark Depths of Colorado Caves

Researchers recently found four new animal species living in the deep and dark caves of Colorado — three of which were named to honor Colorado residents. The four species are millipedes, considered to be some of the smallest in the world.

The previously undiscovered cave-dwelling millipedes — eyeless and albino — were identified by David Steinmann (a research associate in the zoology department at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science) and Dr. William Shear (a professor of biology emeritus at Hampden-Sydney College) after two decades of research. The new genus has been dubbed “Coloradesmus” as they are only known to exist in the state of Colorado.

George Floyd Protests: 1,258 Arrested, 130 Police Officers Injured in Chicago

As peaceful protests entered their ninth day in the city, Chicago police announced Saturday they had arrested 1,258 people in three days during the unrest that swept Chicago after the death of George Floyd in the custody of Minneapolis police.

More than half of those arrests were related to criminal conduct tied to looting and destruction of property, officials said. Officers recovered 135 guns and made 62 arrests on gun-related offenses, officials said.

In addition, 130 police officers were injured between 5 p.m. May 29 and midnight May 31, department officials said. The unrest began to quiet on June 2, officials said.

Get Gandhi!

Antifa are just iconoclasts at heart. Or…more likely…they don’t even know what they don’t know. Rioters did go after the monument to the 54th Massachusetts regiment last week. They were not some Confederate outfit. The 54th was an all-volunteer black Union regiment that fought against slavery during the Civil War, and proved that black men could be soldiers every bit as good as their white comrades. It’s sad that they had to proved that, but prove it they did.

Back to Gandhi:

Unknown miscreants vandalised the statue of Mahatma Gandhi outside the Indian embassy in Washington DC with graffiti and spray paint, prompting the mission to register a complaint with the local law enforcement agencies.

Microsoft Accused of Telling Staff to Censor Negative Article About the Company

Last Thursday, Microsoft announced it was firing dozens of journalists that maintain the news homepage on the Microsoft Edge browser and MSN website and replace them with artificial intelligence (AI) software that curates the news.

This software doesn’t create original content and instead curates news from various sources including BBC, CNN, and The Guardian and it will sometimes also choose an accompanying image to be published with the curated articles.

The remaining human staff are unable to stop the AI selecting and automatically publishing stories which means that negative coverage of Microsoft’s news-curation AI could potentially be published to the MSN homepage by this software.

And now The Guardian is reporting that this decision appears to have backfired and that Microsoft has been telling its remaining human staff to look out for and delete negative articles about alleged racist bias in this AI software if it gets published by the AI.

Scenes From Philadelphia’s Meltdown

Though many of the protests surrounding the death of George Floyd began with peaceful intentions, anyone familiar with protest culture today must realize that an undercurrent of violence and anarchy always lies beneath the surface. Just look at Philadelphia, where last week’s initially peaceful protest quickly devolved into a flame-throwing rush of destruction.

According to the Philadelphia Police Department, 378 fires were set in the city and 246 commercial burglaries were committed during the unrest. At first, Mayor Jim Kenney and new police commissioner Danielle Outlaw blamed the fires and looting on a small group of outsiders, but they later had to eat their words. In fact, official arrest data showed that 181 of the arrested were from Philadelphia, while 46 came from outside the city (with 30 having no address). The worst of the rioting and looting occurred over three days, long enough to call into question Kenney’s contention that the agitators and looters were just a small band of troublemakers. Occupying a city and rendering police helpless are feats beyond the capacity of ragtag rejects.

‘Political Correctness’ in the UK: Shut Down Discussion Before it Can Start

For many years now, Trevor Phillips OBE has been one of the most prominent individuals of black ancestry in the United Kingdom. He is a multitalented individual who has played significant roles in business, politics, journalism, and more throughout a long life (he is now 66). A full list of his achievements would take up most of this article. Here are only a few examples:

He was, until June 2018, the President of the John Lewis Partnership, Europe’s largest employee-owned company. He has also Chairman of Index on Censorship, the international campaign group for freedom of expression, and was founding chair of both the Greater London Authority, and of Britain’s Equality and Human Rights Commission. Originally chair of the Commission for Racial Equality, and as head of the EHRC, Phillips was a controversial figure: he was an opponent of multiculturalism, apparently preferring a more constrained policy towards integration, a view he still maintains. Although a member (until recently) of the left-wing Labour party, he is still a senior fellow with the leading Conservative think tank, Policy Exchange.

Shockingly, on March 9, Phillips was suspended from the Labour Party on the grounds of “Islamophobia.”
