Gates of Vienna News Feed 6/8/2020

A veto-proof majority of the Minneapolis city council has voted to begin dismantling the city’s police department. Meanwhile, the mayor of New York announced dramatic cuts in the city’s police budget, and the city council of Toronto has done the same. Both cities intend to redirect the funds to social services and community projects. Also, rioters chased police officers through the streets of London during the BLM protests over the weekend.

In coronanews, New Zealand is now officially virus-free, and has lifted all COVID restrictions.

S&P Erases 2020 Losses as Stocks Soar

The S&P 500 on Monday erased its losses for the year, surpassing its closing level for 2019 as investors bet on a robust economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.

The S&P 500 closed up 38.5 points, or 1.2 percent, at 3,232. That was 17 points higher than its close on New Year’s Eve.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 461 points, or 1.7 percent, closing at 27,572. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq advanced as well, adding 110.7 points, or 1.1 percent, to approach 10,000 for the first time. Last week, the technology-heavy index notched a record high, erasing all its pandemic losses.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Signals Support of Defunding the Police

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has announced her support of defunding police departments, a position that has gained ground during recent protests over police brutality.

Her position seems to be more moderate than that of many in the growing chorus of Black Lives Matter activists, however. During a congressional primary debate Friday, Ocasio-Cortez called for a “reduction” in the NYPD budget, rather than a complete disbanding.

As Protesters Flout Coronavirus Lockdowns, Racetrack Calls the Government’s Bluff

After months of lockdowns to slow the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus from China, massive crowds have gathered to protest the death of George Floyd at the hands of police. The very same state government that prohibited protests outside an abortion clinic, leading to the arrest of Christians praying outside one deadly establishment, would not act against the massive crowds … and that seems to have given a racetrack in North Carolina a great idea.

Why not host a race and call it a “protest?”

Biden Campaign Claims Biden Believes Police Should Not be Defunded

Joe Biden’s campaign said on Monday that the Democratic nominee does not believe in defunding the police, a platform recently touted by the Black Lives Matter movement.

“Biden supports the urgent need for reform — including funding for public schools, summer programs, and mental health and substance abuse treatment… This also means funding community policing programs that improve relationships between officers and residents,” campaign Rapid Response Director Andrew Bates said.

Chicago Suffers Deadliest Day in 60 Years With 18 Murders in 24 Hours

The city of Chicago notched a grim milestone last weekend, as 18 people were murdered on Sunday, May 31 alone, marking the deadliest day in the city since at least 1961.

The University of Chicago Crime Lab’s numbers do not go back further than 1961, so it’s impossible to say how long it’s been — if ever — since so many people were murdered in the city one 24-hour stretch.

CNN Spreads Deadly Lies About Vitamin D for COVID-19

May 31, 2020, I posted an interview with three vitamin D experts in which we discuss the importance of vitamin D for preventing COVID-19 infection. A few days earlier, May 27, CNN published a report1 that could have deadly consequences if believed, claiming taking vitamin D supplements “can hurt a lot.”

The article was written by Sandee LaMotte — a medical producer and writer for CNN and executive producer of video at pharma-biased WebMD. Three other CNN reporters, Emma Reynolds, Shelby Lin Erdman and Rob Picheta, also contributed to the story.

The article quotes Robin May, director of the British Institute of Microbiology and Infection as saying:2 “To date, there is no evidence that very high vitamin D levels are protective against COVID-19 and consequently medical guidance is that people should not be supplementing their vitamin D levels beyond those which are currently recommended by published medical advice.”

CNN Cites Vitamin D Recommendations Known To Be Incorrect

LaMotte cites dosing recommendations from the Institute of Medicine’s National Academies’ Food and Nutrition Board — a nongovernmental organization — which advises a daily dose of just 600 IUs for anyone over the age of 4, and 800 IUs for those over 70. In the U.K., the daily dose is a meager 400 IUs a day.

Nowhere does the article mention that the IOM’s dosage recommendations are based on the levels thought to be adequate only for bone health.3 They do not take into account the amount of vitamin D you need to prevent influenza, heart— or liver— disease, respiratory infections, cancer, or any of the many other diseases that have a clearly documented link to vitamin D deficiency.

DOJ: Man Plotted Attack in Tampa Bay Area on Behalf of ISIS

TAMPA, Fla. — A Tampa man is facing federal charges after investigators say he plotted a possible attack and tried to give “material support” or resources to ISIS.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), 23-year-old Muhammad Momtaz Al-Azhari was an ISIS supporter who was plotting an attack on behalf of the terrorist organization. Al-Azhari had previously acquired a Glock pistol and a silencer and had “expressed admiration for Pulse nightclub shooter Omar Mateen” and was looking to “carry out a similar mass casualty shooting,” according to DOJ.

According to court documents, Al-Azhari’s criminal record includes previous terrorism charges in Saudi Arabia. He was accused of planning to travel to Syria to participate in jihad and join terrorist groups fighting the Syrian government. He served three years in Saudi Arabia and was removed to the United States in 2018.

Inconvenient Truths: Gore Proven Spectacularly Wrong on Glacier National Park

In his 2006 book, An Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore asserted there would be no more glaciers in Glacier National Park by 2012.

“Our own Glacier National Park will soon need to be renamed, ‘the park formerly known as Glacier,’“ Gore wrote.

Here in 2020, however, glaciers remain in abundance in the Park. Call this another Al Gore prediction that spectacularly failed.

On page 47 of his book, Gore writes, “I climbed to the top of the bigger glacier in this park with one of my daughters in 1997 and heard from the scientists who accompanied us that within 15 years all of the glaciers throughout the park will likely be gone.”

Yet, Caitlyn Florentine, a research physical scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey’s Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center, told Montana Public Radio earlier this year that 26 named glaciers continue to exist in Glacier National Park, eight years after Gore’s no-glacier deadline.

Minneapolis Rioters Burned One of America’s Most Beloved Independent Bookstores to the Ground

Venerable Minneapolis science fiction and fantasy bookstore Uncle Hugo’s and its sister store in the same building, Uncle Edgar’s, which specialized in mysteries, were both burned to ruins last Friday night by rioters.

The store took its name from two major awards in the genre fields, science fiction’s Hugo awards, and mysteries Edgar’s. Independent bookstores are a threatened American institution, and Uncle Hugo’s was considered a flagship operation. Owner Don Blyly was noted for his ability to adapt to modern bookselling conditions and serve an audience of devoted genre readers. With most independent book shops, the margins are low and often owners are in the business as much for love as for money. For Don Blyly, it doesn’t matter anymore.

The books are burned. His shop is gone.

Antifa is Heir to Germany’s Red Army Faction, Daughter of Terrorist Ulrike Meinhof Says

by J. Michael Waller

The only real difference between Antifa and the old Baader-Meinhof Gang of West Germany is that Antifa has no prominent leader and its members hide their identities, says German historian Bettina Röhl.

Of all people, she should know. Röhl’s mother was the notorious German terrorist Ulrike Meinhof.

“The militant Antifa only lacks the prominent faces compared to the RAF” or Red Army Faction, which the Baader-Meinhof Gang became, writes Röhl in Zurich’s influential Neue Zürcher Zeitung.

Meinhof, whose activism started as a “peace” activist in opposition to rearming the West German army and building American nuclear weapons, grew more extreme and defended the 1972 terrorist massacre of the Israeli Olympic team in Munich.

Röhl writes about Antifa in Germany, where the movement began. The Center for Security Policy’s Kyle Shideler gives a quick study of Antifa’s German origins in The American Mind.

Antifa is a coward by comparison, in the eyes of Meinhof’s daughter, a strong critic of terrorism. Says Röhl, “Out of cowardice, it practices covering its [members’] faces and keeping their names secret.”…

Controversial Essay at German Chemistry Journal Leads to Suspensions, Mass Resignations

Facing a storm of criticism on social media, a chemistry journal in Germany has suspended two editors who handled a controversial essay that it said “highlights the bias displayed in our field and many others” to women and minority researchers.

And the 16 members of the journal’s international advisory board — which includes Nobel Laureates — resigned while denouncing the essay.

The article, “Organic synthesis-where now?’ Is thirty years old. A reflection on the current state of affairs,” by Tomas Hudlicky, of Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario, had appeared in Angewandte Chemie, the flagship publication of the German Chemical Society. Hudlicky’s argument included several statements that suggested a hostility to efforts on university campuses to promote diversity.

The journal initially removed the essay without a notice, which isn’t best practice for retractions.

France: Post-Pandemic Disaster?

The coronavirus pandemic in the northern hemisphere seems starting to subside — perhaps just temporarily.

Many journalists wonder if Italy, one of the eight countries most affected in Western Europe, will leave the EU. Another country of concern is France — not in great shape.

Although France spends a significant amount on its healthcare (8.6% of France’s GDP), the pandemic there has been frighteningly mismanaged. There was a tragic shortage of intensive-care beds: 5,000 for the whole country, compared to Germany’s 28,000. There was also, until the end of April, a near-total lack of masks and protective equipment for hospital doctors and caregivers. Further, there was the great lack of an ability to test for the coronavirus. The situation led the government to decide on one of the strictest general lockdowns in Europe. For eight weeks, the French economy, like others, effectively stopped. The results were devastating.

More German Cities Ditch Microsoft, Move to Open-Source Tech

Once upon a time, the German city of Munich had a visionary tech idea: switch the city’s public administration from the costly, slow, inefficient, and security-issues riddled Windows — to its perfect antidote: Linux.

Nowadays, when the entire backend of the internet is running on free and open software, deploying Linux anywhere doesn’t seem like a big deal. It makes perfect sense — even as Microsoft itself is moving its ostensibly only truly profitable business, the cloud, onto Linux, at the same time adopting and incorporating Linux/Unix tools to lure in developers or keep them locked in on Windows as a platform that is, otherwise, becoming sadly irrelevant.

But there are still battles to be fought and more importantly, huge amounts of legacy money to be lost on the “front end” of the game of computer usage, especially in various public administrations/organizations all around the world.

Violence gripped many British cities for another day on Sunday as riots in sympathy with ongoing demonstrations in the United States in reaction to the death of George Floyd, a black man who died while being taken into police custody two weeks ago, continued unabated. 12 Unpleasant Truths, Part 1

Regarding health care, the matter is really quite simple. People—corporate elites as well as masses—respond to incentives. In a materialist society and for moneyed interests, profit is the strongest incentive. Consumer spending generates profits. Saving does not. Hence the manufacture of incentives to spend (and the means), and penalties visited upon savers: inflation, low interest rates, etc., destroying the value of savings…

  1. Orcs burn several bookstores to the ground in Minneapoli-Dishu.

Book burning should be a hanging offence, or at least worthy of castration. Undoubtedly certain books are worthy of use as toilet paper in-extremis (the several self-congratulatory autobiographies of a certain Kenyan president come to mind) but joking aside, books are repositories of knowledge which unlike digital storage or ephemeral internet sites cannot be altered or deleted to suit the whims of woke politicians and their ignorant constituents. They must be physically destroyed to delete the truths within, and as such, destruction of books is a crime against future generations and sacrilegious in the extreme.

    • Your suggested penalty is somewhat extreme, 007, but you’re correct; it’s been said many times before, including here and by me, but that great socialist writer, George Orwell’s “1984” was written as a warning, not a manual.

      • Extreme you say? Really!?? Just what the heck is it going to take for you to finally open your damn eyes to the cold, cruel reality of it all?? Dealing with uncivilized savages with civilized means is always, without exception, a sure way to lose your country to the savages. The fact that you are just hoping your way out of this mess means you are a good civilized sheep for the slaughter. I used to have sympathy and empathy for your sort, not any longer, for you refuse to see what is right in front of you and fail to do anything but hope, wish and ignore the problem until it is right on your doorstep. Victory always favors the bold, never the timid, nor squeamish. War is already upon you, unfortunately for you and yours, your lack of imagination and preparing will be your doom.
You certainly are not the Brit with a stiff spine as were your parents or grandparents and it bloody well shows by your pacifist nature.

  2. As noted by several topics below: Eastern Europe is a complex topic.
    From the Ukrainian site
    ——-
Ukrainian Lives Matter: who did the Poles forget to apologize to?

The riots in the United States around the murder of a police detained African American George Floyd quietly spilled over into protests in Europe. One of them even took place in Poland – several dozen activists marched around the city, and then lay down with their hands twisted behind their backs, thus expressing their repentance for the oppression of blacks
Perhaps the Poles thus decided to compensate for the lack of black characters in the fictional universe of The Witcher, which gained worldwide popularity? Who knows … But the very fact that the Poles repented that blacks are lynched in America looks extremely funny, if only because Poland itself has its own rich tradition of oppressing people with a different language and culture.

    https://ukraina.ru/history/20200609/1027931382.html

    • Elena…in America there is no supression of blacks. In forty five years we have created programs for them to give them a hand up in society. They still don’t get it. There are some wonderful black conservative leaders who are called Uncle Tom’s for “acting like white people”. They have been given welfare, section 8 housing and food stamps but they demand more. The problem is that the Democrats destroyed the black family by giving them money for every bastard baby they have. If there were fathers in their families then perhaps they would not have been so dyfunctional. The children find ‘family’ by joining violent gangs. Another problem is that they are only 13% of our population yet they commit 50% of homicides, 65% of violent crimes and 85% of over crimes. It is a fact that any black run city is rife with corruption and crime.
Black Lives Matter was founded on the lie of Michael Brown who was a thug who bullied convenience stores to get free cigars and he was a violent man. Our cops are not evil people. They have to put up with criminal blacks because they refuse to follow orders, they have guns, knives and they threaten the officers.
I have absolutely no respect for BLM or George Floyd. He was a criminal who has served five times in prison for his violence. He even broke into a pregnant woman’s house, stole her money and put a loaded guy on the womans belly.
I have, because of this evil rioting become a race realist and I am disgusted by the majority of criminal blacks. They sometimes are like savages in their killings.
I know that when Hispanics move into black neighborhoods, they kick the blacks out of their community.
I am suffering for our country and the world are being destroyed by racist blacks and white liberals. I could say more, but this is already too long for this article.

      • Yes I know. In Russia, by the way, serfdom was abolished around the same time that you had slavery.
So in my face, for example, the oppressors (famous Nizhny Novgorod merchants) and the oppressed were mixed.
And nothing, I live somehow. I’m not hitting myself on the head.

With Floyd we got some kind of circus.
I think we live in some kind of metaphysical world. Remember how recently the whole world went around a clip with a dancing funeral team? And now let go a little while, almost the same dances are happening with the coffin of Floyd.

Yes, about the metaphysical world: now the global process of picking old sores has begun. As if we could feel the pain of those who were our ancestors. Or wasn’t – many attribute this pain to themselves.
This is doubly funny to me – because I believe in reincarnation.

        • There are already too many Blacks and Asians in America. They need to go back to Asia or Africa.

      • You make some good points in your first paragraph, Theresa. Just this morning, on BBC Radio 4, I heard a retired senior London police officer talking about how most youths drawn into gangs and knife crime were raised in an atmosphere of violence and abuse, mainly with absentee fathers; his solution was mentoring, which has been remarkably successful in Glasgow, once the murder capital of Europe, but it does need a sustained effort, without political interference, and great commitment from those who “befriend” the damaged youths in question.

  3. “A veto-proof majority of the Minneapolis city council has voted to begin dismantling the city’s police department.” What is this about? Everyone knows that people need the police. Is anyone able to explain that to me? What are they going to do in Minneapolis about domestic violence, murderers, rapists, well, whatever? Is this to end up with criminals living after their own laws and rich people hiring security services, while the rest can go to hell? I never pretended to comprehend Americans, but this time I really don not understand what they are thinking.

    • Minneapoli-Dishu is peopled by the same fools that are currently turning Sweden into hell on earth. About a decade or so ago, Lutheran Social Services started importing orcs into Minneapolis, mostly of Somali extraction. Those who didn’t like it were told to shut up or leave. Now the city is chock-full of orcs and stupid white liberals, so this kind of thing which sounds like insanity to the average person with a brain, makes perfect sense to the average Minneapoli-Dishu resident.

    • And if people refuse to pay taxes, and therefore the city council members cannot be paid, who will enforce the law that requires payment of taxes? I don’t think they really intend to abolish the police. I think they want to replace the current police force with Antifa or BLM, who will be given the same authority as the police, but will have a different name.

      • That will be top kino! Seattle’s been some great commie hunting, ferinstance.
But they need a name more …evocative of… the Glorious Revolution of the Dictatorship of the Proletariat.
Perhaps a suitable leftist name, with the weight of the inevitable conclusion of the historical dialectic?
They have so many to choose from.
Committee for Public Safety. SA. SS. STASI. NKVD. CHEKA. SANTEBAL. GESTAPO. SOVNARCON. Direccion de Inteligencia.
Ministry of Public Security (UB). Ministry of State Security (MSB).
        Red Guards. Einsatzgruppen.
Just a few off the top of the ash (hole) heap of communist history.
It’s a rich pageant, and all that.

    • They will redirect a large portion of the police budget towards “community” initiatives. What this means is that the black “leaders” in Minneapolis will receive funding for whatever they can fantasize. It will be a form of reparations.

Taking this money out of the police budget will result in a huge increase in crime and a decrease in arrests and convictions. Once people realize this, the money will be put back into the police budgets.

But, due to the ratcheting effect of new government programs, the re-funding of the police will NOT come out of the new Black Reparations payments. Those will continue and will simply be a huge addition to the Minneapolis tax expenditure.

This is the BLM/Progressive plan. The police will ultimately not change, but the graft . . . oh, the graft! . . .

    • Gee….muslims complaining about slavery. Hmmm…..who sold the slaves in Africa? Who enslaved millions?

      • The own Asian an Black communities keep quiet about their own brutal, exploitive Asians enslaving and exploiting their own people but they made so much noise when they willingly let their own Blacks enslaved by their own greed in the White world.

  4. “What solutions would you offer to neutralize ‘racism’?” The complete ban of groups like BLM and Antifa. There’s no other cases of racism in today’s America nowadays.

      • By shouting racist at anyone you disagree with, you make them racist. The 3rd worlders by their actions are hardening our hearts to any perceived problem they have with the white majorities in western white countries. Diversity + Proximity = Conflict, as any bloody history book will show you, yet the left and useful idiots keep parroting the idiotic mantra that diversity is strength, when it is anything but. This ends only one way now. There is no voting our way out of this mess.

    • Check out the Democratic Party. Everything is race based. That is racist? Very little on merit anymore.

  6. A little history lesson: 1919 in Hungary the Communists took over with a coup. They disbanded all armed forces (army, police) and then they formed nice little Death Squads. Then they systematically started to touring the country, murdering anyone who even just wasn’t overly excited about them. When the Leftists in the USA push for abolishing the police, they following that exact recipe. History repeats itself…

    • One little difference here; we are armed to the teeth and the communists are not.

Most communist sympathizers here are pusillanimous ineffectual older white liberals who escaped from the 60s or younger ineffectual college indoctrinated losers still living in their mommy’s basement and scared of guns or violence unless they are wearing black and part of a large group beating unarmed and unresisting people.

There has not been violent pushback yet against either group, because the situation is not yet that dire that going to prison for mowing down a gathering of antifa losers with rifle fire is worth it. Sooner or later though, the gloves will come off and when that happens both groups will likely be slaughtered without mercy since neither believes in arming themselves or learning how to use weapons effectively. The older white liberals in particular tend to rely on outsourcing their violence through the courts and the political system which will do little good when they are personally confronted by those who have no qualms getting their own hands dirty to rid the States of communist scum.

  7. The taxi driver, apparently, watched too much news channels from America and Europe.
    ===============
In Bryansk, the Yandex.Taxi driver refused to carry a black passenger – a student from Congo. The taxi driver said that he does not carry people that he does not like.

The driver on the record says that he takes orders selectively, if “he does not like the [passenger’s] condition, then he will not be lucky.” He then explained the refusal of the trip by the coronavirus, and when asked by the passenger: “Are you racist, right?” – answered: “Of course yes.”
