AP-NORC poll: About Half of Workers Lose Income Due to Virus

WASHINGTON (AP) — About half of all working Americans report some kind of income loss affecting themselves or a member of their household due to the coronavirus pandemic, with low-income Americans and those without college degrees especially likely to have lost a job, according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

Sixty percent of Americans now say the national economy is “poor,” an alarmingly swift reversal from the 67% who called it “good” in January. The spike in pessimism has followed a stock market collapse and the closures of businesses around the country as regular economic activity has been halted in an attempt to limit the number of COVID-19 deaths to hundreds of thousands instead of millions.

Coronavirus-Led Global Recession to be Deeper Than Thought But Hopefully Short: Reuters Poll

BENGALURU (Reuters) — The global recession that economists polled by Reuters say is under way will be deeper than thought a few weeks ago due to the coronavirus pandemic, although most are clinging to hopes for a swift rebound.

With more than 1 million cases reported, the outbreak has acted as a catalyst to an already-slowing global economy and a rout across world financial markets, wiping about $15 trillion from stock markets alone.

ESM ‘Completely Inadequate as is’ Says Gentiloni

We have other instruments and other goals says commissioner

(ANSA) — Brussels, April 2 — The European Stability Mechanism bailout fund, as it is, is “completely inadequate” to provide the necessary funds to counteract the economic impact of the coronavirus, European Economic Affairs Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni said Thursday.

“The ESM was born in another historical epoch and today it is completely inadequate for what we are facing,” he told Sky news.

If the conditions restricting its use were to change, he said, “it might be looked at in a different way, but let’s not get fossilized, we have several other instruments and various goals”.

Italy is pushing for coronabonds to fund the response to the virus-induced economic crisis, and Rome has rejected the use of the ESM which Germany and other northern deficit hawks are advocating.

Italy: ESM Hasn’t Worked: EU Should Share Risks — Di Maio

In order to share future opportunities

(ANSA) — Rome, April 1 — The European Stability Mechanism bailout fund “did not work in Greece, just think today,” Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio said Wednesday reiterating Italy’s request for coronabonds to share the risks of the coronavirus pandemic.

“The ESM is a way of saying to countries, we’ll give you a tool, but then you have to look after yourself. We, on the other hand, are proposing to European States share the risks now, in order to share the opportunities in the future”.

Germany and other northern European deficit hawks are proposing using the ESM for the crisis, a proposal Italy has rejected.

Millions of Small Businesses Stunned to Learn They Are Not Eligible for Bailout Loans

It’s the first day that America’s small businesses can apply for the SBA’s Paycheck Protection Program, i.e., the $350BN program that is part of the bigger $2 trillion bailout package designed to provide small businesses access to capital for payroll and other overhead costs to the tune of 2.5 months of average payroll and which must be accessed via an existing banking relationship — and the rollout is predictably a mess, with some banks such as BofA already accepting loans (which convert to grants if used exclusively for payrolls and business continuity purposes), while others like JPM delaying the roll out to 1pm; a third group of banks such as Wells Fargo has conspicuously failed to provide its rollout plans — perhaps it is scheming how to cross-sell bailout loans with auto insurance or engage in some other typically Wellsfargoian fraud.

This is What Economic Collapse Looks Like

Approximately ten million Americans have filed new claims for unemployment benefits over the past two weeks. To put that in perspective, the all-time record for a single week before this coronavirus pandemic hit was just 695,000. So needless to say, 6.6 million claims in a single week puts us in uncharted territory. Just check out this chart. We have never seen a week like this before, and we may never see a week quite this bad again. Of course millions more jobs will be lost in the months ahead as this pandemic stretches on, but it is hard to imagine another spike like we just had. When you add the last two weeks together, somewhere around 10 million Americans have filed new unemployment claims during that time period…

Personally, I was absolutely astounded when the latest box office numbers were released…

The Domestic Box office (movie theaters) brought in a whopping $5,179 for the week of Mar 20-26. Down 100% from $204,193,406 the same week a year ago… These numbers are just incredible.

And even once all the “shelter-in-place” orders have finally been lifted, a substantial portion of the population will not want to go to movie theaters anymore due to fear of catching the virus.

Many movie theaters that have closed down will simply never open up again.

Federal Prisons Fail to Monitor Terrorist Inmates Amid 250% Hike in Radicalized Convicts

The nation’s federal prison system is supposed to keep America safe by, among other things, monitoring all social communications of high-risk inmates, especially those with terrorist ties. This is a crucial part of the Bureau of Prisons’ (BOP) duties considering that in the last decade the number of inmates with known links to terrorism increased by an astounding 250%. But surprise, surprise, the agency with a $7.1 billion annual budget doesn’t adequately check the communications of terrorist prisoners. Furthermore, the BOP, which operates under the Department of Justice (DOJ), hasn’t even bothered identifying all terrorists in its custody, according to a report issued this month by the DOJ Inspector General.

Regarding the coronavirus, Palestinian-American Sociology professor Seif Da’na insisted that “more people die every year not just from diseases that you can get vaccinated for, like malaria — from which half a million people [die] in Africa — but also from the West’s economic policies, at least in the 20th century and the two decades of the 21st century. More people die every year from the consequences of these economic issues than from what is happening now.”

(ANSAmed) — ROME, APRIL 2 — The leader of Catalonia Quim Torra has asked Spain to help his region, one of the epicenters of the coronavirus emergency.

Only a month ago, the Catalan government said it did not need the Spanish army but after 21,804 people tested positive for the virus and the victims became 2,093 — including 362 in retirement homes — Torra was forced to plead for help. “If they can help, if any doctor can help us and come, we would be grateful”, the separatist leader told Radio Ser Catalunya. Torra complained he has not received testing kits from Spain.

“The Catalan government is providing 90% of resources, the Spanish 10%”, he added. The Spanish army has already intervened in Barcelona where it is sanitizing retirement homes and creating a hospital in a conference hall in the city.

Limits of EU Solidarity: Merkel and Conte Clash Over COVID-19 Measures

by Thomas O. Falk

Covid-19’s impact reaches far beyond just its devastating physical health implications. Most notably, the ever-verbose EU has become a union in name only, silent and obsolete. Its virtues, freedom of movement, open borders, and cooperation are currently in free-fall. Amid the coronavirus crisis, Europe has witnessed a resurgence of nation-states that are self-focused and in survival-mode as opposed to being concerned with the greater good of the continent.

Coronavirus is Showing the Limits of EU Solidarity

It might be a first indication of how Covid-19 could alter the European Union moving forward as the heads of government are in an open dispute about the economic measures to overcome the crisis — and this is only the beginning.

The southern Europeans, Italy, France, and Spain are calling for joint borrowing: so-called Eurobonds to mitigate the economic impacts caused by the pandemic. German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, and the Dutch leader Mark Rutte are rejecting the idea.

This rejection is an enormous affront for Italy’s Prime Minister Conte, who urgently needs the tools to overcome the recession that is emerging on Italy’s horizon. Merkel’s laboriousness and deliberative nature — a trait the German Chancellor has long been (in)famous for — has frustrated Conte, who urged the other leaders that the consequences of the Covid-19 needed not to be addressed in the subsequent months, but “tomorrow morning.”

Prioritizing National Self-Interest

Those who have paid close attention to European — and indeed global politics — over the previous decade might rightfully wonder whether Germany has all of a sudden lost its ability to bring Europe together. The answer is no, it has not. However, Merkel, Kurz, and Rutte, just like any other leaders, have shifted their focus away from the common good and onto their own interests.

The argument over Eurobonds revolves around the fact that governmentss would have to increase the taxpayers’ burden in Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands. Conservative figures for Germany are estimated at between €20 to €30 billion.

Italy, France, and Spain, on the other hand, seek to secure funds on the capital markets via Eurobonds and be jointly liable for their debts, which, in turn, would largely protect them from the pressure of the market. Moreover, sharing debts would reduce interest rates for economically troubled nations such as Portugal and Greece. However, nations with excellent credit ratings such as Germany or the Netherlands would have to pay increased interests on the debts raised — a concept they are not inclined to accept, particularly as no one can currently project how hard the corona impact on the respective economies will be.

EU Parliament President Disappointed

EU Parliament President David Sassoli was disappointed that no consent could be realized yesterday. He had expected a sense of “greater responsibility,” as some governments had displayed “nearsightedness” and “selfishness.”

Sassoli’s criticism, however, is misleading as Germany is inclined to help in the right circumstances. It is only that the approach of how the help is being facilitated differs from the specific demands. Merkel did propose aid in the form of the ESM rescue fund, which would provide for extended credit lines. In theory, the ESM offers credit guarantees if a country has difficulty refinancing on the capital markets. According to Merkel’s plan, each country ought to have access to sums of two percent of its economic output — a total of €240 billion. However — unlike Eurobonds — any ESM aid is linked to conditions that result in budget consolidation and some supervision over the domestic fiscal policy.

Conte rejects Merkel’s idea. So much so that he prevented including Merkel’s proposal in the session’s final communique. With no solution reached, the Eurogroup under President Mário Centeno is now tasked to develop a new plan within two weeks.

The situation is very complicated. Moreover, the current developments display perhaps more plainly than ever that in times of crisis, the old, noble EU rules, which call for nearly unconditional solidarity, could soon cease to exist since European states are currently scrambling to uphold their respective economies more than preserve the union.

‘Smell of Failure in the Air’ — Farage Shocked UK Still Has No Travel Bans, Says Health Secretary Must Go

Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage detects “the smell of failure in the air” as the coronavirus crisis unfolds in Britain, blaming Health Secretary Matt Hancock and the medical technocrats at Public Health England (PHE).

Writing in The Telegraph, Farage conceded that Prime Minister Boris Johnson was enjoying a bump in popularity — which is often the case during major crises, when the public rally around their leaders, right or wrong — and that this popularity had even “survived the reversal of the herd immunity strategy that his government had been pursuing”, but predicted that this would not last if it continued to fail on priorities such as testing.

UK: Garden Centres Facing £1 Million Fine for Staying Open During Lockdown

The owner of Plants Galore, a business in Devon, South West England has become the first in Britain to be threatened with legal action for remaining open despite the government’s orders during the coronavirus lockdown, ITV News reports.

Tony Joyner, the owner of the chain of garden centres made headlines when he ripped up a prohibition notice from the local council asking him to close. The tighter restrictions introduced by Boris Johnson’s government in response to the coronavirus outbreak mean that shops selling “non-essential” items such as clothes and electronics have been forced to shut, but garden centres claim they have been unfairly treated because as a gardening shop, having to close could mean that thousands of plants have to be thrown away.

Caroline Glick: Coronavirus Lessons for Coalition Talks

We are living through a grave crisis. And crises have a knack for clarifying fundamental truths. The coronavirus pandemic has exposed several of them.

First, our ability to control our world is limited. An unknown number of months ago, through unclear means, the coronavirus broke out in China and landed in the rest of the world shortly thereafter.

Over the past month, everything that makes up our lives and our world came to a grinding halt. Schools closed. Workplaces shut down. Israel’s previously stable and promising economic outlook has disappeared. No one can tell us when or if our lives will ever go back to normal and what our economy will look like when this is over.

The second truth the pandemic has shown us is that no matter how bad things are in Israel, the plight of our neighbors is immeasurably worse…

Coronavirus: Syrians Discriminated in Lebanon — HRW

More stringent measures imposed

(ANSAmed) — BEIRUT, APRIL 2 — Communities of Syrian refugees in Lebanon are being discriminated in several areas of the country due to the coronavirus emergency, Human Rights Watch has denounced. The international humanitarian emergency has just published a statement denouncing violations committed by dozens of Lebanese municipalities against Syrian refugees. About one million Syrian refugees have fled to Lebanon since the start of the conflict in 2011. Some sources say there are 1.5 million refugees in Lebanon, which has a population of roughly four million people.

From February 21 until today, Lebanon has registered some 500 cases of Codiv-19 and 16 have died from the virus, according to official data. The Lebanese government in mid-March imposed the shutdown of all non-essential commercial activities and a nighttime curfew.

In this context, even before the middle of March, dozens of Lebanese municipalities imposed discriminatory measures against Syrian refugees, said Human Rights Watch, citing the example of places where Syrians had to abide by a curfew during the day which Lebanese nationals did not have to respect. In general, Syrians did not have the same freedom of movement as the rest of the population. For their part, UN agencies already supporting Syrian refugees in Lebanon have started awareness campaigns in refugee camps, distributing soap and disinfectant for families.

They have also set up facilities for isolation.

United Nations Wants 10% of Entire Planet’s Annual Income in Fund for Coronavirus Response

The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has announced the creation of a fund for addressing the global coronavirus pandemic — and he is simultaneously asking nations to contribute the equivalent of at least 10 percent of the annual income of the entire planet to a massive “human-centered, innovative and coordinated stimulus package” that would be administered at the international level. Although Guterres doesn’t state it explicitly, he seems to be connecting the new fund, which he calls a “dedicated COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund,” with the massive stimulus package plan, announcing both measures in the same press release.

If countries were to accept the plan, the United Nations or some similar coordinating agency would be given the equivalent of approximately 8.7 trillion USD, an unprecedented amount that would be 2,900 times greater than the UN’s annual budget of 3 billion USD.

The proposed plan would effectively place a global agency, presumably the UN itself, in charge of propping up the economies of the world during the coronavirus crisis, placing it in charge of 10% of global income.

[Comment: This idea should be flushed down the toilet where it belongs. If anything, the UN delay and ineptitude caused a greater spread of COVID — so their budget must be slashed.]

20 thoughts on “Gates of Vienna News Feed 4/3/2020

  1. “In other news, in a single day the UK border force intercepted 52 migrants trying to enter the country.”

“Intercepted” is the wrong word. 52 invaders were welcomed. They will be given a flat, food of their voice and pocket money enough to have time and ability to train for jihad.

    Intercepted?

If Britain and other European countries were normal there would not be interception. When Europe was populated by norman humans any interceptee would be given a lesson that would teach others not to dare invade.

When people of so called advanced civilization think the way show in the following article by Mellanie Phillips, then doom is approaching fast.

“APRIL 1, 2020 MELANIE COMPUTER MODELLING, CORONAVIRUS, LORD KING, UNHERD
If you want to discover why so many of our experts are getting things so terribly wrong, Giles Fraser’s interview on Unherd’s “Confessions” with the former Bank of England governor, Lord King, is essential listening.
King asks what it means to be rational in an age of deep uncertainty. Many experts, he says, have come to believe that mathematical calculations and computer modelling provide us with an authoritative representation of reality.
This is hopelessly wrong because such calculations can never encompass the uncertainties that help form human behaviour. Yet these experts have come to believe that everything can be thus quantified and explained. So anything that can’t be quantified is therefore useless; and anyone who challenges the quantification model is somehow suspect and is disregarded or even disrespected. :

What a dark age in the age of advanced computers!

  2. UK Media: “’Bleating’ about muslim rape gangs….”, is the article by Faima Bakar in the Metro, a free paper that is thrust into your hand at London’s Underground Stations. An internet search for Faima Bakar produces this from her Twitter:

“Currently there are more than 1,300 tweet replies to my article, not to mention the ones underneath the story, the Facebook messages, the DMs, the emails. And just wanted to say…Not reading or interacting with any of it. So pls, knock yourselves out. IDGAF”

That is her standard of journalism. She gives the example of how to treat it.

  3. Not that I follow Twatter or particularly care about the goings on of it’s idiot CEO, but it is nice to hear that that sow masquerading as a woman is now banned from the platform.

Mr Yaniv (pretending he is female is “misgendering”) is a prime example of how there desperately needs to be a service to allow blanket parties to be crowdfunded and outsourced. Such a simple expedient would have saved the poor foreign women he has harrassed a fortune in legal bills, and would have likely saved Mr Yaniv a fortune in legal judgements. Nothing focuses the mind more clearly than a good beating, which Mr Yaniv so richly deserves.

  4. Alas, I will be submitting a report of an Allah Akbar attack to the newsfeed.

    • These police scum need to be doxxed, especially the prosecutor and police chief. Maybe they were just following laws, but they certainly have some amount of discretion to not charge her or ignore the fact that she used a banned item to end the attempted rape. Since they chose not to do so, it follows that they have chosen to be on the side of rapists and evil laws and therefore should be fair game for vigilante justice.

      • its not the police-its the law.in germany its also not allowed to keep pepperspray at demonstrations, big meetings etc.-a joke!

        • That is what I mean. There is the law, and also there is police and prosecutorial discretion. Police can choose to not observe the can of pepper spray and simply classify it as hair spray. The orc just happened to have a strong allergic reaction to it and that was why it’s eyes were watering. The prosecutor can throw out the case or downgrade it to a misdemeanor and just make it a fine and waive that. That would demonstrate that they are on the side of civilized humans and not rapist orcs.

Here in America, many sheriffs in counties with oppressive gun laws have announced their refusal to enforce such bad laws. Whether such refusal stands up legally is a matter for the courts but at least the citizens know what side their police officers are on.

          • The Police is back to the old saying: I was just following orders.

And we all know where this ended.

And that is the irony / funny thing (I dont know the correct word to describe it):

If an old Nazi of WWII is put before a court both the prosecutor and the judge yell at him: You should have thought before you acted and you should have recognized that your actions were against the Declaration of Human Rights.

But today: Oh, if these actions were a violation of the Declaration of Human Rights has to be decided by a court of law. And no, the Police need not think about the legality of their actions. Thats what the courts are for.

If we take the stand that the law has for the actions of the Police of today and apply it to the old Nazis of WWII we would end up with (and I censor myself): You have to go through all the Courts of Nazi Germany till Mr Freisler and only he can say if the actions of the SS at certain places is a violation of the Declaration of Human Rights or not.
(Do you puke? Yes I do.)
