Almost One Million Canadians Made EI Claims Last Week
Nearly 5% of Canada’s workforce made jobless claims last week amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the Financial Post, 929,000 people submitted EI applications during the week of Monday March 16 to Sunday March 22. In comparison, for the month of March 2019 Canadians made a total of 244,000 employment insurance claims.
The number is much higher than the 500,000 figure reported by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last Friday, as it included claims made over the weekend.

Dow Notches Biggest One-Day Gain Since 1933 on Hopes for a Coronavirus Stimulus Package
The Dow Jones industrial average rebounded Tuesday, posting its biggest one-day gain in nearly 90 years on hopes that Congress would pass a stimulus bill to shield the economy from the coronavirus pandemic.
The blue-chip average surged more than 2,100 points, or 11.4%, to close at 20,704.91, its largest percentage gain since March 1933 after slumping to a three-year low a day earlier. The Standard & Poor’s 500 jumped 9.4% to end at 2,447.33, its biggest gain since October 2008.

During an appearance earlier today on The View, Joe Biden repeatedly flouted coronavirus advice by constantly touching his mouth and face.
The presidential frontrunner couldn’t stop putting his hand to his mouth and rubbing his eye during the interview.

The stand-up comedian, Daily Show correspondent and writer Jaboukie Young-White is now banned from Twitter.
Several times in the past, Young-White changed his account name on Twitter and made several humorous statements under the name of the FBI, Ted Cruz, and President Donald Trump — all while avoiding a ban.
But it wasn’t until he impersonated CNN and tweeted about the absence of Joe Biden that it became the final straw for Twitter, who swiftly banned the account.

Joe Biden was humiliated again after a bizarre MSNBC interview during which he stumbled over his words and sounded semi-incoherant.

Austrian Ski Resort Flings Coronavirus Around Europe
Tourists from around Europe became infected with the coronavirus in Austria’s Paznaun Valley. Despite mounting evidence, the lifts and bars stayed open until just a few days ago.

One thing, at least, has now become clear. Eros Ramazzotti can skip his planned trip to Paznaun Valley in the Tyrol region of Austria. The Italian popstar had been booked for Top of the Mountain Closing, the celebration marking the end of the ski season on May 2, 2020, at Idalp, located at an altitude of 2,320 meters (7,610 feet) — high above the winter sports hotspot of Ischgl.
The extravaganza has been cancelled, as was the rest of the season on Friday in response to the coronavirus outbreak — seven weeks earlier than originally planned. On the other hand, the closure came much later than it should have for hundreds of guests from Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Germany. As has become clear, a huge number of skiers and other tourists became infected with the virus in Ischgl and brought the illness back to their home countries.
“Essentially, it is a catastrophe for Ischgl,” Werner Kurz, who has been mayor of the Alpine town for the last 10 years, said over the phone. Ischgl has since been sealed off. “But we aren’t yet talking about the economic consequences. We will overcome that, just as we have been able to overcome flooding and avalanches in the past.”
Around 1,000 men and women working in the tourism industry, along with at least two dozen Austrian tourists, are now stuck in the winter sports town due to the quarantine that has been imposed, says Kurz. He adds that he doesn’t know exactly how many Austrians in Ischgl are currently infected…

Assange Lawyer Baltasar Garzon Hospitalized With Coronavirus
Famous Spanish jurist Baltasar Garzon has been admitted to a hospital in Madrid after testing positive for Covid-19. He has provided legal counsel to WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange, among other things.
Garzon, 64, was admitted to the Ruber clinic in Madrid on Tuesday, after five days of high fever at home. He tested positive for the coronavirus and was given the prognosis of respiratory failure, Spanish media reported.

Coronavirus Causes Gun Buying Panic in Hungary
Fearing the potential breakdown of law and order as a result of the coronavirus, Hungarians are panic buying guns, with one store reporting a five fold increase in sales.
“We are selling five times as much as in a normal March,” Gabor Vass, a gun store owner in Budapest, told Al Jazeera.

Finland’s Former President Has Coronavirus
Finland’s former president, Martti Ahtisaari, has been diagnosed with coronavirus, according to a statement from the office of the president, reported Finnish public broadcaster Yle. Ahtisaari’s test results were confirmed on Monday. His wife, Eeva Ahtisaari, confirmed last Saturday that she had tested positive for the coronavirus. Both are 82 years old.

France: Man Sentenced for Spitting on Police While Claiming to Have Coronavirus
A man in the French city of Montpellier has been sentenced to eight months in prison for spitting on police officers and telling them that he had tested positive for the Wuhan coronavirus.
The arrest of the man took place last week on Thursday night as he had broken into a local pharmacy to allegedly steal surgical masks. But the spitting incident did not occur until officers had taken him back to the local police station.

Former populist French MP Marion Maréchal has slammed the European Union’s response to the coronavirus outbreak, saying the health crisis has shattered the bloc’s notion of solidarity.

Germany: Merkel Negative in 1st Virus Test; More Tests to Come
BERLIN (AP) — Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokesman said Monday that the German leader has tested negative for the new coronavirus.
Spokesman Steffen Seibert told news agency dpa “the result of today’s test is negative” but that “further tests will be conducted in the coming days.”
Merkel went into quarantine at home on Sunday evening after being informed that a doctor who had administered a vaccination to her had tested positive for the new coronavirus. She received the precautionary vaccination against pneumococcal infection on Friday.

Germany: Coronavirus: Man Arrested for Licking Handrail, Ticket Machines of Munich Subway
A man in Munich, Germany who claimed to have tested positive for the Wuhan coronavirus, has been arrested after filming himself licking ticket machines and handrails on the city’s subway.

Greek authorities have arrested several members of an extreme-left Turkish terrorist organization following a series of raids which led to the discovery of a tunnel in Athens filled with military-grade weapons.
A total of eleven members of the Marxist-Leninist Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party (DHKP-C) — all of whom are Turkish citizens — were rounded up during sweeps carried out by Greece’s National Intelligence Service and Anti-Terrorism service, Greek newspaper Kathimerini reports.

Ireland: Pair of Ghanaian Men Jailed for 9 Years for Raping Woman
Two men have been sentenced to nine years in prison after tricking the “blind drunk student” into their car and taking her back to their flat after promising to take her home, The Irish Times reports.
The woman said in court that she’d been about to pass out after a night clubbing with her friends. A video taken in the apartment showed the victim staggering around the apartment before collapsing. Despite this, one of the perpetrators said to the police that she was not too drunk to consent.

Italy: Crime Surges, People Defy Lockdown Orders
Italy has been the European country hit the hardest by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic: as of today there are more than 64,000 confirmed cases, and more than 6,000 people have died, the latter number of which is more than any other country in the world so far apart from China. Nevertheless, Italy is struggling to control its population as it tries to slow the spread of the virus.
In particular the city of Palermo, in southern Italy, has seen an epidemic of crime since the lockdown of the country was ordered, according to a report in Il Ginorale. Last week, thieves stole five computers from a school, and televisions and protein supplements worth thousands were taken from a gym. Elsewhere, five thousand euros’ worth of supplies were stolen from an industrial complex.

Julian Assange’s Lawyers to Apply for Bail, Citing Virus Risk
LONDON (Reuters) — Julian Assange’s lawyers will apply for his release on bail because of the risk of contracting coronavirus while in prison, Wikileaks said on Monday.
The Wikileaks founder is being held at a prison in London on an extradition warrant for publishing classified information about the Iraq and Afghan wars.

Europe Has Been the Greatest Disappointment in This Crisis

The small-mindedness and competitive thinking within its member states and the lack of a concerted response to the coronavirus has revealed an uncomfortable truth: Solidarity within the European Union is a far-off dream. Once the pandemic passes, we will have to rethink the whole thing.
When the news began spreading on Sunday that the French luxury firm LVMH was converting its entire perfume production to the manufacture of disinfectant gel, the details of the matter may have been uncertain, but one thing was clear: It was a moment that would go down in history for the parent company of Dior and other legendary brands.
A pandemic sharpens perceptions, and the memory functions even more precisely. Things happen so quickly, our heads spin. We can’t take it all in, and much is registered with sheer astonishment. You quickly notice who among your friends gets in touch and who disappears, who lets their imagination get the better of them and who gets caught up in their routines. The Italians surely won’t forget the plane that landed full of medical personnel and relief supplies from China — or the fact that no such planes arrived from Frankfurt, Paris or Brussels. Indeed, Europe has been the greatest disappointment in this crisis so far.
It was a given that the American president, the British prime minister and the usual suspects would get tangled up in their statements and proffer up nutty plans they would soon abandon, all the while putting people’s lives at risk for obviously cynical short-term political gains. This may have happened to the chagrin of the people of their respective countries, but what else could be expected from them? It was also a given that Germany’s states would want to prove themselves in their autonomy and that they would always be a bit delayed in their communication and would make slightly different decisions. But it has come as a real shock to see the European Union, as a symbol, an institution and a project fade into obscurity without so much as a peep. How many politicians have dedicated endless speeches extolling the virtues of this grand project? And how often has Europe been evoked as the ultimate recipe against nationalism, irrationalism and illiberal tendencies?…

Local Official in France Bans Sales of All Alcohol During Coronavirus Lockdown
Residents on lockdown in an area of France are now prohibited from buying alcohol after a local official banned all sales.
The Préfet of the Aisne département in north east France issued a directive that went into force this morning which forbids shops from selling alcohol to be consumed off premises.
The order was given by Ziad Khoury, who has also mandated that shops cannot stay open after 8pm.

Norway: Arson Attacks on Churches in Revenge for Quran-Burning
A man believed to be from an immigrant background from the Middle East or North Africa has been charged with starting a fire at Dombås Church and trying to set Sel Church on fire, Document Norway reports.
The arson was reportedly revenge attacks for copies of the Quran being burnt at a demonstration by Stop Islamisation of Norway in Agder in late 2019. Anti-Islam protesters called the religion “fascist” and said the Prophet Mohammed was a paedophile. It is claimed that the police did not stop the demonstrators from setting fire to Islam’s primary text and this resulted in a brawl.

An Italian priest made the ultimate sacrifice, hoping to save the life of someone younger than him in a battle with the novel coronavirus.

Some Germans Intent on Spreading Coronavirus, Man Arrested for Licking Ticket Machine
From “corona parties” to a man arrested for licking a ticket machine, some Germans appear intent on spreading the virus despite the majority of the country following the rules issued by authorities.

The restaurant business in Sweden has been hit incredibly hard by the coronavirus pandemic because most people — just as they should — avoid places that are typically crowded with people. As a result, some restaurants have come up with new ways to keep their businesses afloat.
Björn Eriksson, who runs a pub in Vasastan in Stockholm says he was forced to fire all of his staff. A girl sexually abused by a Muslim gang in Huddersfield, Yorkshire has spoken under the pseudonym ‘Lucy’ to The Independent about how her abusers harassed and intimidated her and her family throughout the trial.
The brave survivor, who is from a Muslim background herself, was preyed on at the young age of 11. Because of her mother’s drug addiction, she was seen as an easy target for men who initially befriended her with cigarettes and alcohol before sexually exploiting her. The girl was drugged and pimped out by the gang but when the police caught them, she was “thrown back onto the streets.” The local authorities put her into care, claiming they believed she was “prostituting herself” but the gang continued to abduct and rape her after she was put in a children’s home.

UK: Oxygen Thieves: Criminals Steal Crucial Gas Canisters From Hospital
Callous thieves broke into Withington Community Hospital in Manchester, England, and stole canisters of oxygen and nitrous oxide — vital for treating patients struggling with respiratory infections such as coronavirus.
Police say three men were seen getting out of a black BMW at approximately 3:30 a.m. near the loading area for hospital deliveries and approaching a metal unit containing the oxygen. The lock securing it was cut and eight canisters stolen.

UK: Pictures: Army Delivers Supplies to Hospital During Coronavirus Lockdown
Members of the British Army’s 101 Logistic Brigade have begun delivering consignments of personal protection equipment for medical staff to hospitals after Prime Minister Boris Johnson ordered a strict lockdown over the coronavirus pandemic.

Three teenagers assaulted a couple in their 70s in Hitchin, Hertfordshire on Friday afternoon. Fortunately, a passerby intervened and prevented the attackers from inflicting even more harm. The incident has been widely reported in the British media; the interesting thing is that none of the reports mention who the “passerby” was: Tommy Robinson.
The youths, who were reported to be boys aged 16, 18, and 19, approached the couple while they were walking through Paynes Park on their way to get groceries. According to media reports and eyewitness accounts, the boys spat on them and coughed in their faces — clearly an attempt to stoke fear in their victims amidst the coronavirus outbreak.

UK: Your NHS Needs You: Govt Calls for Army of 250,000 Volunteers
Health secretary Matt Hancock has called for 250,000 Britons to volunteer in the NHS during the coronavirus pandemic to deliver medicines and shop for the vulnerable.
The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care made the call to arms during a public announcement from Downing Street on Tuesday.

ISIS has called on God to increase the coronavirus torment of non-believers and boasts that crusader nations have been forced to retreat due to the pandemic, it has been reported.
The Islamic State has released a new newsletter from their al-Naba publication which follows up on the terror group’s previous article which instructed members on how to deal with the spread of the virus.
They begin the article by stating that God ‘has imposed something of his painful torment on the nations of his creation,’ claiming the virus is God’s response to idolatrous nations, according to Al-Masdar News.

Turkey: Violence Against Women Continues to Escalate
It has become customary. As in previous years, on March 8, Turkish riot police brutally attacked demonstrators walking in central Istanbul to mark the International Women’s Day. A feminist march at midnight was dispersed by rubber bullets and scores of tear gas canisters shot by the police. All that Turkish women were asking for was equal treatment and protesting the growing “tradition” of women being murdered.
Ironically their grandmothers were luckier than some of their Western peers. The secular civil code of 1926, introduced as part of Atatürk’s reforms, gave Turkish women civil rights equal to that of men. The law meant that religious and polygamous marriages would not be officially recognized. It also gave women the right to initiate divorce. Shortly afterwards, in 1935, for the first time, Turkish women were allowed to vote in national elections: as a result, eighteen female candidates were elected to parliament — a decade or more earlier than women in Western countries such as France, Italy and Belgium. In 1935, only eight women served in the US Congress and nine in the British parliament.

All of India’s 1.3 Billion Residents Placed Under Lockdown
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for a 21-day nationwide lockdown of the country Tuesday night to combat the spread of coronavirus.
In the public address broadcasted on television, he asked all of the country’s 1.3 billion people to remain in their homes for three weeks, beginning at midnight. Modi said failure to adhere to the complete shutdown would result in a 21-year setback for India.

Report Compiles 41 Damning Early Coronavirus Outbreak Articles Deleted by China
After almost three months of the first reports suggesting a COVID-19 outbreak, a list has been released with some of the early news articles that were censored in China for allegedly being “negative.”
Although the first cases of COVID-19 were reported in late 2019, it wasn’t until January 1, 2020, that the disease began to appear in the news. The Chinese government’s reaction was even slower, who confirmed the virus’ existence on January 7, 2020.
Although it is common for some medical news stories to be tragic and critical of the nation’s health system, Beijing did not want to accept the negativity with which this news referred to the virus.

African Nun Found Brutally Murdered in Gabon
Sister Lydie Oyane of the Catholic Congregation of Saint Mary in Gabon was found murdered in her room in Libreville on March 20, the alleged victim of a robbery.
The body of the nun showed signs of having been “brutalized,” according to local reports, and her car, housekeys, and mobile phone were stolen.

In Paris, the police are being stretched to the limit in their efforts to enforce the coronavirus (COVID-19) quarantines in the city’s migrant areas, or “no-go” zones.

Muslim Migrant Sets Fire to Two Churches in Revenge for Alleged Qur’an-Burning by Norwegian
The man (28) who is charged with the church fire at Dombås was avenging the fact that a Norwegian man had set fire to the Quran.
He was arrested on Saturday night in Dombås, and the same day imprisoned for four weeks for the fire at Dombås and attempted igniting of a church in Sel. The fire in the Dombås church happened on February 20. The Sel church was the subject of attempted arson on March 19. The man has admitted to the criminal charges.
“He has stated as a reason for his actions that he was angry and cursed because a Norwegian man had set fire to the Koran, without the police having done anything about it,” writes Hedmarken district court in the arrest warrant.
The 28-year-old “lives [in] Nord-Gudbrandsdal”, writes NTB, but his name indicates that he has an immigrant background from the Middle East or Africa.

Poll: Global Majority Supports Closing Borders Over Coronavirus
A majority of people want their country’s borders closed in response to coronavirus, according to a new Ipsos Reuters poll.
Reuters surveyed 12,000 people across 12 of the world’s major nations between March 12 and March 15, with the poll showing that citizens are dropping open borders in favor of security. Most say their country’s borders should be closed until the coronavirus is contained.

Watch: Greeks Continue to Repel Violent Foreign Invaders Along Its Border

Lockdown: An Unnecessary Measure

As of 19 March 2020, COVID-19 is no longer considered to be a high consequence infectious disease (HCID) in the UK.
A new French study in the Journal of Antimicrobial Agents, titled SARS-CoV-2: fear versus data, concludes that “the problem of SARS-CoV-2 is probably overestimated“, since “the mortality rate for SARS-CoV-2 is not significantly different from that for common coronaviruses identified at the study hospital in France“.
An Italian study of August 2019 found that flu deaths in Italy were between 7,000 and 25,000 in recent years. This value is higher than in most other European countries due to the large elderly population in Italy, and much higher than anything attributed to Covid-19 so far.
In a new fact sheet, the World Health Organization WHO reports that Covid-19 is in fact spreading slower, not faster, than influenza by a factor of about 50%. Moreover, pre-symptomatic transmission appears to be much lower with Covid-19 than with influenza.
A leading Italian doctor reports that “strange cases of pneumonia“ were seen in the Lombardy region already in November 2019, raising again the question if they were caused by the new virus (which officially only appeared in Italy in February 2020), or by other factors, such as the dangerously high smog levels in Northern Italy.
Danish researcher Peter Gøtzsche, founder of the renowned Cochrane Medical Collaboration, writes that Corona is “an epidemic of mass panic“ and “logic was one of the first victims.“
Former Israeli Health Minister, Professor Yoram Lass, says that the new coronavirus is “less dangerous than the flu“ and lockdown measures “will kill more people than the virus“. He adds that „the numbers do not match the panic“ and “psychology is prevailing over science“. He also notes that “Italy is known for its enormous morbidity in respiratory problems, more than three times any other European country.“
Pietro Vernazza, a Swiss infectious disease specialist, argues that many of the imposed measures are not based on science and should be reversed. According to Vernazza, mass testing makes no sense because 90% of the population will see no symptoms, and lockdowns and closing schools are even „counterproductive“. He recommends protecting only risk groups while keeping the economy and society at large undisturbed.
The President of the World Doctors Federation, Frank Ulrich Montgomery, argues that lockdown measures as in Italy are „unreasonable“ and „counterproductive“ and should be reversed.
