Gates of Vienna News Feed 11/19/2019

25 illegal migrants were discovered inside a refrigerated container on a lorry bound for the UK. The lorry was intercepted by border agents on board a ferry traveling from the Netherlands to the UK.

In other news, two prison guards who were assigned to guard Jeffrey Epstein when he, ahem, committed suicide in prison have been indicted on federal charges. There’s no word on whether the guards will be on suicide watch when they enter detention.

Americans Are Already Bored of the Impeachment Hearings

If the sentiments of several people interviewed by the New York Times are anything to go by, Americans are already getting bored of the impeachment hearings.

The hearings entered day three proper today as two top national security aides who listened to President Donald Trump’s July call with Ukraine’s president gave testimony.

However, in an article entitled ‘No One Believes Anything’: Voters Worn Out by a Fog of Political News’, the NY Times talked to Americans about how they viewed the spectacle and they didn’t come across as very enthusiastic.

Clinton Foundation Files $16.8 Million Loss

The numbers don’t lie, Hillary’s name is poison

Hillary Clinton’s name is pure poison and no one in their right mind wants anything to do with her.

This is evidenced nowhere more in the fact that the Clinton Foundation has gone from turning over a revenue of almost $400 million in 2013, to actually LOSING almost $33 million since Donald Trump wiped the floor with Hillary in 2016.

Newly released tax records show that the foundation reported a loss of almost $17 million in 2018, to add to the net loss of $16.1 million the previous year in 2017.

Democrats Are So Politically Intolerant, They Even Refuse to Date Other Democrats

Democrats are so politically intolerant that they are now refusing to even date other Democrats if they support a different presidential candidate.

Last week, arch-liberal Bill Maher said that partisan bickering is so bad in America that there could be a civil war if the rhetoric is not toned down.

“Home is where you learn that the three magic words in any relationship aren’t ‘I love you’ they’re ‘let it go’…we are going to have to learn to live with each other or else there will be blood,” Maher said.

Facebook: Mark Zuckerberg’s Fake Accounts Ponzi Scheme

So what is that magical ingredient, that secret sauce, that “genius” trade secret, that turned an over-funded money-losing startup into one of America’s greatest business success stories? It’s one that Bernie Madoff would recognize instantly: fraud, in the form of fake accounts.

Old money goes out, and new money comes in to replace it. That’s how a traditional Ponzi scheme works. Madoff kept his going for decades, managing to attain the rank of Chairman of the NASDAQ while he was at it.

Zuckerberg’s version is slightly different, but only slightly: old users leave after getting bored, disgusted and distrustful, and new users come in to replace them. Except that as Mark’s friend and lieutenant, Sam Lessin told us, the “new users” part of the equation was already getting to be a problem in 2012. On October 26, Lessin, wrote, “we are running out of humans (and have run-out of valuable humans from an advertiser perspective).” At the time, it was far from clear that Facebook even had a viable business model, and according to Frontline, Sheryl Sandberg was panicking due to the company’s poor revenue numbers.

Google’s Secret ‘Project Nightingale’ Gathers Personal Health Data on Millions of Americans

Google is teaming with one of the country’s largest health-care systems on a secret project to collect and crunch the detailed personal health information of millions of Americans across 21 states, according to people familiar with the matter and internal documents. The data involved in Project Nightingale includes lab results, doctor diagnoses and hospitalization records, among other categories, and amounts to a complete health history, complete with patient names and dates of birth. Neither patients nor doctors have been notified. At least 150 Google employees already have access to much of the data on tens of millions of patients, according to a person familiar with the matter. There’s a lot of money to be made in healthcare, and it was only a matter of time before creepy technology companies like Google would want a piece of this pie — through massive amounts of personal information. Technically, this is all above board, though. It’s fully within federal regulations and laws, so this practice is unlikely to stop.

Jeffrey Epstein’s Prison Guards Are Indicted on Federal Charges

Two correctional officers who were assigned to guard Jeffrey Epstein on the night he died in his cell have been indicted for allegedly ignoring more than 75 mandatory checks on the wealthy financier then fabricating records to cover it up.

Federal authorities charged Michael Thomas and Tova Noel with multiple counts of falsifying records and conspiracy. The two worked as guards at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, a federal facility in Manhattan that is mostly used for defendants awaiting trial.

At a court appearance on Tuesday, Thomas and Noel pleaded not guilty and a judge released each of them on a $100,000 bond.

John Kennedy to Bureau of Prisons Chief: Christmas Ornaments, Drywall, And Jeffrey Epstein Don’t Hang Themselves

Not only is he the most quotable member of the Senate, he must be the most quotable politician in America.

Well, second-most behind you-know-who. But certainly no worse than that.

It’s the American people who’ve drawn the conclusion that Epstein didn’t kill himself, Kennedy noted at today’s hearing with the head of the BOP, leaving us to wonder if he agrees or disagrees. The affidavit unveiled this morning implies strongly that Epstein really did do the deed himself, enabled by BOP negligence. But that’s not the point here. The point, stressed by Kennedy at the end of the clip below, is that people are waiting for answers on Epstein’s death — and waiting, and waiting, for more than three months now. That point was made repeatedly in questioning of BOP chief Kathleen Hawk Sawyer during her appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee this morning, with the frustration compounded by the fact that Sawyer refused to provide any information about Epstein because the investigations are still pending.

Student Arrested for Building ISIS Propaganda Computer Program

Federal investigators have charged a US-based college student for trying to help ISIS spread the terrorist group’s propaganda over social media.

Allegedly, his computer script relied on automated bots saving the propaganda ISIS had posted on social media before spreading it elsewhere. The affected social media platform was not named, but the criminal complaint against Osadzinski suggests he was targeting Facebook.

The ‘Charlie’s Angels’ Director Blames it Tanking on Men Not Wanting to Watch a Movie Starring Women

Source — The well-reviewed “Charlie’s Angels” reboot is the latest studio box office bomb of the fall movie season. … The Elizabeth Banks-directed action comedy failed to crack $9 million at the box office over its opening weekend. Box office tracking had “Charlie’s Angels” opening at an already-disappointing $10 million, but the final total came in well below that low mark. IndieWire’s box office expert Tom Brueggemann says the film “will be a significant loss” for Sony this season.

Prior to the movie’s disastrous opening weekend, Banks gave an interview to the Herald Sun that is now proving to be somewhat controversial. The filmmaker, who also wrote and produced “Charlie’s Angels” and stars in the movie as Bosley, called out a potential box office bomb as being sexist.

Unpublished Data From Stanley Milgram’s Experiments Cast Doubt on His Claims About Obedience

An analysis of previously unpublished data raises serious questions about Stanley Milgram’s landmark obedience experiments.

The findings, which have been published in Social Psychology Quarterly, indicate that many people were willing to engage in seemingly reprehensible behavior because they saw through the researchers’ cover story. Those who believed the cover story, on the other hand, tended to be more defiant.

The Milgram experiment was designed to test people’s willingness to bow to authority — in this case, scientists in lab coats. Subjects were led to believe that they were participating in a study about learning, and were asked to deliver increasingly powerful electric shocks to another subject whenever he got an answer wrong during a memory test.

“On Monday, Nov. 18, a speaker sponsored by the College Republicans was disrupted and ultimately prevented from presenting by a large group of students and others,” Binghamton University said in a statement via Twitter Tuesday morning. The public institution says that several measures were taken ahead of the event, including the deployment of “a large number of police…”

“Despite those measures,” the university continued, “the lecture was immediately disrupted and the speaker was entirely prevented from addressing the audience led by an individual using a bull horn. That individual was arrested, as was another individual who attempted to interfere with police.”

Church May Introduce Ecological Sins Says Pope

Corporate conduct ‘cannot remain unpunished’ says Francis

(ANSA) — Vatican City, November 15 — Pope Francis said Friday the Catholic Church is thinking of introducing ecological sins.

“We are thinking of introducing ecological sins, sins against our common home, into the catechism of the Catholic Church,” he told an audience of legal experts on crimes against the environment in the Vatican.

“An elementary sense of just would impose that some conduct, which usually corporations are responsible for, cannot remain unpunished,” Francis said.

“In particular, all those can be considered as ‘ecocide’.” The pope recalled that, in the recent synod on the Amazon, the Church dealt with the issue of ecological crimes.

Francis has written several essays and an encyclical, Laudato si’, on the importance of preserving the earth’s natural heritage and combating the climate crisis.

Laudato si’, or Praise Be to You, was Francis’s second encyclical.

The encyclical has the subtitle “on care for our common home”.

In it, the pope critiques consumerism and irresponsible development, laments environmental degradation and global warming, and calls all people of the world to take “swift and unified global action.”

Denmark: Shootings, Car Torchings, Gang Violence

On September 24, the US embassy in Denmark published a security alert. It warned US citizens in Copenhagen that:

“The Danish National Police urge individuals living in or visiting the areas of Nørrebro, Ishøj, and Hundige to exercise heightened awareness at all times due to a recent increase in gun violence. Copenhagen Police have instituted a stop-and-search zone in a large area covering Nørrebro. The ordinance — which will run through September 30 — allows police officers to stop and search anyone within the area without cause”.

The alert also encouraged US citizens to “keep a low profile”, “do not physically resist any robbery attempt” and “use caution when walking or driving at night”.

Police in Copenhagen eventually decided to extend the stop and search ordinance in parts of Copenhagen until October 14.

The police have confirmed that the numerous shootings, one of them lethal, are connected to rivalries between two criminal gangs, “Brothas” and “NNV”.

‘I Was Possessed’: How One Man Was Freed From Satanic Possession

The testimony of a man who was possessed by cohorts of demons after a séance and was saved by his conversion.

PARIS — Michel Chiron was a simple educator in an institute for the mentally disabled in central France and led an uneventful life. In the 1980s, boredom and a love disappointment led him to participate in spiritualist séances with some colleagues.

The Catholic education he received in his childhood had been swept away by the cultural revolution of May 1968, and he proudly described himself as an atheist. However, as he started such practices in order to “have fun,” without believing in their effects, Chiron saw, with great astonishment, the pedestal table turn and the spirits communicate coherent messages through Scrabble letters.

A decade later, it is with a darker state of mind that he appealed to the same spirits again, alone, in search for answers regarding his romantic life. It was a step that will cost him dearly, as it enabled demonic spirits to take possession of his body and to torment him day and night for more than nine months.

In this interview with the Register, Chiron gives a chilling account of this authentic trip to hell — from which he came back, thanks to his return to the faith. Such a story is told in the newly published book J’étais Possédé (“I Was Possessed”).

Italy: Police Raid Arcelormittal Offices

Probe into false statements to market, asset stripping

(ANSA) — Rome, November 19 — Finance police on Tuesday raided the officers in Italy of ArcelorMittal and seized evidence in relation to probes into the steel giant’s controversial bid to back out of a contract to take over the former ILVA group. The case has rocked Premier Giuseppe Conte’s government and raised fears about the economic impact of the possible closure of the ex-ILVA group, including its troubled huge plant in the southern city of Taranto.

On Monday ArcelorMittal suspended the procedure to turn off the altoforno 2 furnace at the Taranto plant, pending a ruling in Milan about whether the French-Indian multinational’s withdrawal plan is legal.

ArcelorMittal said it was cooperating with the investigations. The Milan probe is looking into alleged false communications to the market, asset stripping and failure to declare earnings.

A probe in Taranto is examining various aspects of the case, including issues regarding the acquisition of raw materials and the sale of end products.

Two Taranto managers were quizzed as to the treatment of stocks in the warehouse, judicial sources said.

The city council in Taranto said it would stand as civil plaintiff in the case. Conte on Friday vowed to stop ArcelorMittal’s pullout, saying the company is breaching a contract. The multinational has cited the lifting of a penal shield against prosecution for a cleanup of the highly polluting works in the Puglia city as a reason for the pullout. The plant’s emissions have been linked to years of higher than normal cancer rates in Taranto.

ArcelorMittal says that, if it were persuade to stay on, it would be seeking 5,000 job cuts in the group, which employs some 8,300 in Taranto and around 3,000 more in two other, smaller plants at Genoa and Novi Ligure.

The government has vowed to avert jobs cuts, especially in Taranto, where the steelworks is the Puglia city’s biggest employer.

Union sources have said the planned job cuts would detonate a “social bomb” in Taranto, especially given the knock-on effects on ancillary industries and the supply chain.

Conte was said to be seeking to reintroduce the penal shield on Tuesday, as well as seeking possible help from Germany and a possible Chinese partner.

He is set to meet again with ArcelorMittal owners and executives on Friday.

Meanwhile Tuesday also saw the first job losses in the group, with three young temporary workers in the acquisitions office in Genoa getting their pink slips.

Observatory Releases Report on Christian Persecution in Europe

ROME — The Observatory on Intolerance and Discrimination against Christians in Europe has published its annual 2019 report, chronicling the rising level of Christian persecution throughout Europe in the previous year.

In its report, the observatory documented “a rise in the number of churches, Christian symbols, and cemeteries across Europe being vandalized, desecrated, and burned, compared to previous years,” and yet these acts of anti-Christian violence constitute just the tip of the iceberg.

“We have seen Christian-run businesses financially ruined, street preachers arrested, Christians forced to choose between their moral values and their professions, Christian student groups and speakers silenced on campuses, asylum claims of Christian refugees arbitrarily denied, and parental rights trampled on by overreaching governmental interference,” said Ellen Fantini, the observatory’s executive director. “Fundamental rights are rendered meaningless if they cannot be freely exercised by all Europeans.”

UK: Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn Go Head-to-Head in First Debate of General Election 2019

The Conservative and Labour leaders are taking part in the first debate of the 2019 snap general election, going head to head after a campaign that has already seen blows traded over immigration, the economy, and Brexit.

Update 2140 — Who won?

A common criticism of debates is they don’t change minds and generally, people walk away believing the candidate won who they were supporting in the first place. Regardless, the first snap poll seems to suggest no clear winner, YouGov giving it 51-49, within the margin of error.

Suddenly, Iran is Aflame With Protest

Iran is suddenly seeing its largest protests in years, in over 100 cities — and the government’s cracking down hard.

Amnesty International reports more than 100 deaths, while exile groups put the figure above 200; official media admit to more than 1,000 arrests. In a bid to stifle further demonstrations, the regime has imposed a nationwide Internet blackout and banned reporters from covering the protests.

The anger broke out Friday after Tehran announced fuel rationing and a price increase of 50 percent. But protesters are now chanting, “Death to Rouhani” and “Death to Khamenei” — denouncing Iran’s president and its actual supreme leader — as well as “Death to the dictator.”

Genetic analyses have revealed remarkably higher species diversity in common red seaweed than previously assumed. It was thought that there were only five related species of the Gloiopeltis genus (known as ‘funori’ in Japanese) worldwide. However, genetic analyses of historic and modern specimens have revealed that there are over ten in Japan alone. The reinstatement of the species Gloiopeltis compressa (new Japanese name: Ryukyu-funori) was proposed by this research. It is found in Okinawa and has previously been confused with other species of Gloiopeltis.

Italy: Salvini Probed Over Open Arms Standoff

Migrant-rescue ship was almost 3 weeks at sea before OK to dock

(ANSA) — Rome, November 19 — League leader Matteo Salvini is under investigation on the Sicilian city of Agrigento over a standoff when he was interior minister regarding the Open Arms migrant-rescue ship.

Salvini is being probed for abduction and dereliction of duty in relation to the 164 migrants who were rescued by the NGO-run ship at the start of August.

The ship spend almost three weeks at sea until it was finally allowed to dock at the island of Lampedusa after a deal was reached on sharing out the migrants among EU nations. Salvini spearheaded a tough stance of closing Italy’s ports to NGO-run migrant rescue ships when he was in government.

But that policy was dropped after he pulled the plug on Premier Giuseppe Conte’s first government and it was replaced by a new executive supported by a new alliance.

Probes against Salvini for other similar cases led to nothing.

“I wonder whether the Agrigento prosecutors don’t have anything more serious to deal with,” Salvini said.

“I did what the Italian people asked me to do.

“I defended the borders. I’m starting to get fed up”.

Netherlands: Pakistani Migrant Sentenced to Ten Years for Plotting to Murder Geert Wilders

A Dutch court sentenced a Pakistani migrant to ten years in prison for planning to murder populist PVV leader Geert Wilders.

The defendant, identified only as 27-year-old ‘Junaid I.’ per Dutch privacy laws, had planned to murder Wilders because he was angered by the right-wing populists ‘draw Mohammad’ free speech event, Dutch daily morning newspaper De Telegraaf reports.

After finding the military-aged Pakistani migrant guilty of preparing a murder for terrorist purposes, the court sentenced him to ten years in prison — a sentence that’s substantially higher than the six years requested by the public prosecutor. During sentencing, the judge noted the more severe penalty was due to the seriousness of the crime and the risk of recurrence.

5 Proofs Leftists Hate America

by Dennis Prager

Whenever leftists are charged with not loving or even with hating America, they respond angrily, labeling the question absurd, mean-spirited and an example of right-wing McCarthyism.

But there can be little doubt that the left has no love for America, just as there can be little doubt that liberals and conservatives love America. Love of America is one of the many dividing lines between liberalism and leftism. (For a description of six differences between liberalism and leftism, please see my PragerU video “Left or Liberal?”)

Here are six reasons to believe the left hates America:…

Anti-Semitism — This is War, Start Treating it Like One

If we Jews merely shake our heads in disapproval but don’t treat this seriously — including diving into the slime to know our enemies and their interlinked yet distinct motivations — we will lose.

By David Hunt

Jews everywhere are rightly concerned about the growing anti-Semitism. We cannot merely sigh and resign ourselves to the abuse like we used to do in the Shtetl, ghetto, or dhimmi communities of old. We are under attack, in a few catastrophic cases lethally, and this must be fought aggressively.

Since this is war, we would do well to follow the advice of Sun Tzu, the ancient Chinese military strategist whose work, The Art of War, is one of the must-read books for any military person… indeed, any person in any combative endeavor. His advice is timeless:

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Do we know the enemy? In this political environment, are we even willing to identify the enemy?

Chick-fil-A to Stop Donations to Charities With Anti-LGBT Views

As Chick-fil-A expands globally and into more liberal parts of the U.S., the chicken chain plans to change which charities it donates to after years of bad press and protests from the LGBT community.

The new initiative will no longer include donating to organizations like the Salvation Army, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Paul Anderson Youth Home, Chick-fil-A says, all of which sparked criticism in the past from the LGBT community due to the organizations’ stances on homosexuality. The move comes after several U.S. airports rejected the company from concessions deals earlier this year. More recently, the landlord of the first Chick-fil-A in the U.K. announced eight days into its lease the pop-up venue would not be welcome to extend — all because of the company’s perceived anti-LGBT stance.
