Compulsory Cultural Enrichment

Sweden’s Ylva Johansson wants to compel EU member states to take their share of migrants. However, the means by which she would enforce this policy of “compulsory solidarity” are still unclear.

Ylva Johansson on immigration: Demands “compulsory solidarity”

October 7, 2019

Sweden’s intended EU Commissioner Ylva Johansson (S) calls for “compulsory solidarity” among EU countries concerning immigration. But she is not very good at explaining the concept.

It was last week that Ylva Johansson appeared before the European Parliament.

She is the appointed Swedish EU Commissioner, responsible for EU migration policy. But her reply was so awful that she experienced a backlash during the hearing in the European Parliament.

Returning, she had no concrete answers to the questions, but wanted to come back later. It was not approved. She is now called “Come Back” Commissioner.

But on yesterday’s SVT [Swedish State TV] “Agenda” she had some answers. EU countries should be forced to “solidify” immigration.

“I don’t even know if I did anything wrong.” She said in the program that she was one of the few commissioners who were not approved. “This is a difficult portfolio. The parties are far apart and there are many emotions. My mission is to find a compromise.”

When asked how to get recalcitrant EU states to accept asylum seekers from the Third World, she replied that she should talk to all countries, pointing out:

“I think it is imperative that we have compulsory solidarity among EU member states. If we have a common external border, we must have a system for how we manage and distribute refugees. We need compulsory solidarity among the countries, yes.”

However, she cannot explain exactly what “compulsory solidarity” means. She wants to “return” to it later, she explains. But it should not be voluntary whether one wants to be part of a common asylum policy. When program director Anders Holmberg asks her if it means that all countries must open their borders to asylum seekers, she cannot answer.

  1. Very representative of the feminist superpower.

“You can’t fix stupid” is still in effect it seems.

  2. compulsory solidarity is the result of mixing sand, gravel, cement, and water together to activate the cement so that the sand and gravel are bound together. The result is a ‘concrete’ relationship.

    • This is SO barely on topic, I wouldn’t blame the Baron for deleting it, but some may derive the same pleasure I did when my brother (who lives in Canada) told me of it:

Mobile concrete mixers, when viewed from behind, rotate anticlockwise in countries that drive on the left, and clockwise in the remainder. This is because roads are generally cambered to the offside, and such trucks have a high centre of gravity already, so having the internal “fins” lift the semi-liquid concrete up the higher side before it falls to the bottom means they are less likely to topple over. Isn’t that wonderful?

Peter in Thailand, in a recent comment, mentioned that they drive on the left there (I wonder why?) Maybe he could confirm this.

The Pantheon in Rome is made of concrete (with clever, concealed buttreses), and has stood for nineteen centuries. Respect for the Romans!

  3. Compulsory solidarity? Rings a bell with me. It would perfectly fit into Lenin’s, Mao’s or Kim Il Sung’s vocabulary.

We present an overlapping-generations model with two interacting teams, where young team members earn an income, whereas old team members depend on either intrateam transfers from young members (voluntary solidarity) or tax-financed transfers (compulsory solidarity). We derive the individually and team-specifically optimal decisions and present further behavioral hypotheses, including the crowding out of voluntary by compulsory solidarity. We test our hypotheses in an experimental study and examine (1) whether raising taxes crowds out voluntary transfers, (2) how income distributions influence voluntary and compulsory solidarity, and (3) whether participants prefer more to less compulsory solidarity.

  5. Why is compulsion always one way; in the direction the collectivists want to take us all?
Why can’t there be compulsive solidarity to deport all muslim invaders from the EU?

  6. She used to be a member of the Swedish communist party, which explains everything about the idea of “compulsory solidarity” – the very essence of communism.

  7. The old Soviet Union also had compulsory solidarity among its members and East bloc satellites. Just ask Hungary and Czechoslovakia.
