Gates of Vienna News Feed 8/5/2019

By a large margin, the Italian government won a confidence vote in the Senate concerning its new policy on NGO migrant-ferry vessels. The new decree drastically increases the fines levied against migrant boats that attempt to land, and allows for the arrest of the ships’ captains.

In other news, nearly thirty thousand people took to the streets of Hong Kong and clashed with police during a strike protesting the government’s policies.

U.S. Markets Fall on Worst Day of 2019 as China Devalues Yuan

U.S. markets followed the rest of global markets into the red today as the DJIA had its worst day of losses in 2019. Investors woke up to a broad global sell-off this morning and news that the People’s Bank of China had lowered or set the yuan’s daily reference rate below seven per dollar for the first time in over a decade. The Chinese government has also asked its state-owned firms to suspend imports of U.S. agricultural products, according to multiple reports.

Kunstler: “This is Exactly What You Get in a Culture Where Anything Goes & Nothing Matters”

Authored by James Howard Kunstler via Kunstler.com

In a nation afflicted by fads, crazes, manias, and rages, mass murder is the jackpot for nihilists — begging the question: why does this country produce so many of them?

Answer: this is exactly what you get in a culture where anything goes and nothing matters. Extract all the meaning and purpose from being here on earth, and erase as many boundaries as you can from custom and behavior, and watch what happens, especially among young men trained on video slaughter games.

Neil Degrasse Tyson Ripped for Tweet on Mass Shooting Deaths, So He Apologizes. Then This Happens.

Neil DeGrasse Tyson is a big-picture guy.

He is, after all, an astrophysicist and, for the last two decades, he’s been the Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium at the Rose Center for Earth and Space in New York City.

But he opened up a galaxy-sized can of worms this weekend when he weighed in on the two mass shootings that occurred, one in El Paso, Texas, the other in Dayton, Ohio.

“In the past 48hrs, the USA horrifically lost 34 people to mass shootings,” Tyson posted on Twitter. “On average, across any 48hrs, we also lose…

300 to the Flu

250 to Suicide

200 to Car Accidents

40 to Homicide via Handgun

Photos: Every US Mass Shooter in 2019 Who Shot Four or More People

The liberal media will tell you there have been over 200 mass shootings in the United States so far this year.

The media will also make you believe the mass shooters are all young white males.

A Wiki Page was created to list every mass shooting in the US in 2019.

The list does not include those shootings where no one will speak to police.

At least 20 of the mass shootings this year were in Chicago, Illinois.

The Green New Deal: Poverty for Everyone!

Johnson, the Texas Democrat who extended Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal with his own Great Society, was an old-school liberal, certainly on domestic policy. The political activist-agitators LBJ impugned then as “liberals” are today’s progressives—one might even call them reactionaries of the left.

Epitomizing them is Saikat Chakrabarti, the outgoing chief of staff for freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y). Chakrabarti recently starred in a Washington Post article. The spotlight left a key to the influential staffer’s undemocratic mentality in shadows.

Chakrabarti, 33, acknowledged “The interesting thing about the Green New Deal,” Ocasio-Cortez’s multi-trillion dollar zero-carbon emissions mirage, “is it wasn’t originally a climate thing at all… Because we really think of it as a how-do-you-change-the-entire-economy thing.”

Was Dayton Mass Shooter Motivated by El Paso Massacre?

With authorities still asserting they have found no motive for the mass shooting in Dayton Ohio, some are wondering whether the massacre was a ‘revenge’ attack for the earlier mass shooting in El Paso.

There is still no clear motive as to why 24-year-old Connor Betts opened fire outside a nightclub, killing his own sister in the process.

Although six of the nine fatalities were black, police say they don’t think race was a motive.

Mike Cernovich floated the suggestion that the Dayton shooting could have been a response to the earlier El Paso massacre.

French Military Nails Its Colours to Marine Le Pen’s Mast

The proportion of the French military voting for the far-right peaked in the immediate aftermath of jihadist attacks in 2015, subsided somewhat in the 2017 presidential election and shot up again in May’s European election, a new study shows.

The study — Who Do the Barracks Vote For? — by the Ifop polling institute for the Jean Jaure’s foundation, which was published on July 15th, concludes that the far-right vote among French military has risen significantly since the 2012 presidential election.

The military’s right to political expression is restricted, so Ifop studied voting patterns in communities with a strong military or paramilitary presence. All voted in greater percentages for Marine Le Pen, the Front National and its new iteration, the Rassemblement National.

Watch: Portugal Reassures Brits on Brexit: ‘Life is About Uncertainty’

The Portuguese have published something of a love letter to the British, playing down the “uncertainty” which Brexit may bring and assuring them they will always be “#Brelcome” in Portugal.

“But what we do know is that whatever happens in the future, nothing will break us apart. We are part of each other’s history.”

Portugal and England — and subsequently the United Kingdom, after the Act of Union in 1707 — enjoy probably the longest-standing alliance in the world, dating back to at least 1386 and the Anglo-Portuguese Treaty of Windsor between King John I of Portugal and King Richard II of England.

The Next Jihadist Terror Attack Could be the Mass Poisoning of Food

With news about a jihadist attempt to poison the food of 40,000 Indian worshippers, it should be noted that this method of terrorism is an ongoing threat — and not just in the Far East, either. In fact, Muslims in Canada some years ago contemplated a plot to kill 100,000 people by toxifying food or water.

The latest such attempt, in India, was an Islamic State scheme to poison the “mahaprasad” of a famous temple called Mumbreshwar Mahadev. A mahaprasad or “prasad” is an event in which a large smorgasbord of food is offered to the gods in Hindu temples and then later consumed by worshippers.

The day the suspects planned to poison the prasad, the food “was consumed by at least 40,000 devotees,” reported Zee News July 25.

Italy Government Wins Confidence Vote on Decree Targeting Migrant Rescue Ships

ROME (Reuters) — The Italian government on Monday won a confidence vote in the Senate on a decree targeting charities operating migrant rescue ships, in a victory for Interior Minister Matteo Salvini and his far-right League party.

The government of the League and the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement has been riven by internal strife in recent weeks but won the vote by 160 to 57. It would have had to resign had it lost the motion.

The decree drawn up by Salvini, who also serves as deputy prime minister, toughens sanctions on charity ships that seek to bring migrants rescued in the Mediterranean to Italy.

The decree had already been passed by the lower house and so now becomes law just a couple of days before parliament closes on Wednesday for the summer recess…
