Toy Boy Gets Booed on the Champs Elysées

French President Emmanuel “Toy Boy” Macron stood up in his vehicle and waved at the crowd during yesterday’s parade down the Champs Elysées on Quatorze Juillet. The crowd responded by booing him. Well, strictly speaking, they whistled, which is the equivalent of booing in Continental Europe.

The security services were dispersed among the crowd, but couldn’t stop the whistling, presumably because the disrespectful whistlers never showed any sign of becoming violent. Or maybe there were just too many of them.

Many thanks to Ava Lon for translating this TV news report, and to Vlad Tepes for the subtitling:

The future Baron and I attended the Quatorze Juillet festivities in France back in the early 2000s. We had a very enjoyable experience, even under the massive post-9/11 security regime. Things seem to have changed a lot since then.

Video transcript:

00:00   You are there, you also, on the Champs Elysées, more or less around
00:04   the presidential motorcade. What is going on? What are you hearing? What are you seeing?
00:08   Well, listen, I hear the whistles, OK? [whistling=booing] Many, many people who are
00:12   booing at the passage of the President of the Republic. I don’t know if you can hear them
00:16   behind me. —Absolutely. —There’s also a cordon of CRS [special police],
00:20   which put themselves in place, here at my right side, who are getting ready to possibly intervene,
00:24   if the need arises. I can tell you that the tension has increased
00:28   a lot here on the Champs Elysées. There are plenty of security agents,
00:32   plenty of CRS. And you can hear those whistles. —How many people, how many people,
00:36   approximately, are present among those protesters? —Listen, from where I am right now,
00:39   I’m guessing that I see between twenty and fifty people, but I can tell you they’re making a lot
00:44   of noise, so you get the feeling that they are very numerous, but it’s very difficult to appraise.
00:48   There, where I’m standing, I see the CRS running in the crowd as well,
00:52   possibly to intervene if there’s a need. You heard the noise of firecrackers
00:56   a moment ago, and also yellow balloons, as well, which
01:00   exploded, so a dry noise like that, but for now the CRS are
01:04   in place, no intervention… —Good! —and the whistles.
01:08   Good, don’t hesitate to return, obviously, to come back to us, if the situation evolves.
01:13   In any case, good, the president [on the other hand] carries on imperturbably, of course,
01:16   with this review of the troops. He’s also saluting the French people
01:21   and foreigners, since there are many tourists here who came to witness
01:25   the July 14 parade, present on the route with
01:29   a lot of sympathy.
