Giorgia Meloni: “No to the Creation of New Mosques”

Giorgia Meloni is the leader of the anti-immigration party Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy) and a member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies. In the following video Ms. Meloni talks about her party’s proposed new law, which would regulate mosques and require a new level of transparency in their funding and functioning.

Many thanks to He Ha for the translation, and to Vlad Tepes for the subtitling:

Video transcript:

00:00   We’re in Marciano, Umbria,
00:03   in an area where a new mosque is about to be built.
00:06   We’re here to say no — no to the creation of new mosques.
00:09   No mosque until we pass the new law regulating norms for citizens’ safety,
00:13   drafted by Brothers of Italy. We want a professional register
00:18   for imams to be instituted. We want to know what kind of people preach in mosques.
00:22   We want all sermons to be given in Italian, since we are in Italy
00:26   and the official language is Italian so anyone can understand.
00:29   And we want to know who funds these cultural centers and mosques.
00:35   Because it’s no mystery that most centers are funded by fundamentalist countries.
00:41   Qatar, Saudi Arabia… countries where the death penalty is applied for apostasy,
00:45   the death penalty is applied for homosexuality, stoning for adulterers, zero rights for women.
00:50   Well… it deals with models we wouldn’t want to be advertised in our country.
00:55   And we want a law that establishes the crime of Islamic fundamentalism.
00:58   Unfortunately, Islamic fundamentalism is a reality we face on a daily basis.
01:01   We’ve seen that in recent weeks. We saw a person who was nearly slaughtered for wearing a cross,
01:06   and evidently someone was bothered by the fact that in Italy you can wear a cross.
01:12   So we are asking for more safety for our citizens and asking the government
01:15   not to allow new mosques until our draft law is passed.

  1. Thank you He Ha and Vlad for keeping us all in the loop regarding Italian affairs. This woman is GREAT and her ideas are only sensible.

  2. What an amazing woman. Reminds me of Gerard Batten (UK, UKIP) who says no more mosques until churches are built in Saudi Arabia.
