Gates of Vienna News Feed 3/20/2019

British Prime Minister Theresa May is asking both Parliament and the EU for an extension of the Brexit deadline from March 29 until June. However, French President Emmanuel Macron said that an extension would not be allowed if it was just to gain time. As a result, the value of the pound fell on international currency markets.

In other news, Boko Haram militants attacked a Christian village in northeastern Nigeria, killing an undetermined number of residents and driving most of the rest into the bush. Fortunately, the incident had nothing to do with Islam.

‘Go F**k Yourself’: John Oliver Attacks Jay Leno Over His Old Monica Lewinski Jokes

Jay Leno lamenting the sorry state of late night television last week on The Today Show evidently stung HBO’s John Oliver real deep.

In an act of petty retaliation, Oliver had his staff dig up every old Leno joke they could find poking fun at Monica Lewinsky and edit them all together while cutting out much of the laughter. Oliver played the compilation on his show Sunday and then cried about how his jokes were supposedly not funny and deeply offensive.

On February 23, Oluwole Ilesanmi, a 64-year-old Nigerian evangelist known as Preacher Olu, was arrested at Southgate Station in North London after complaints that his message about Jesus was “Islamophobic.” A video of the arrest, viewed more than two million times, shows how two police officers ordered the man to stop preaching because “nobody wants to listen to that,” confiscated his Bible and then arrested him for “a breach of peace.”

Italy: Driver Abducts Schoolchildren, Sets Bus Ablaze

MILAN (AP) — A bus driver in northern Italy abducted 51 schoolchildren and their chaperones Wednesday and took them on an hour-long drive, then set the vehicle on fire when he was stopped by a Carabinieri blockade, officials said.

Officers broke the glass in the back door of the bus and got all the passengers to safety without serious injury before the flames destroyed the vehicle. As he was apprehended, the driver said he was protesting migrant deaths in the Mediterranean, Commander Luca De Marchis said.

De Marchis told Sky24 TV that the driver, an Italian citizen of Senegalese origin in his 40s, threatened the passengers, telling them that “no one would survive” as he commandeered the bus carrying two middle-school classes in Cremona province, some 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Milan.

An adult called an emergency operator, while one of the students called a parent, and they alerted authorities, who set up roadblocks. The bus was intercepted on the outskirts of Milan by three Carabinieri vehicles, which were able to force it into the guard rail, De Marchis said.

“While two officers kept the driver busy — he took a lighter and threatened to set fire to the vehicle with a gasoline canister on board — the others forced open the back door,” De Marchis said. While the evacuation was underway, the driver started the blaze…

Italy: Terror for Kids After Hijacker Sets Bus Alight

Man angry at govt migrant policy said ‘no one will survive’

(ANSA) — Milan, March 20 — A 47-year-old bus driver was held by Carabinieri police on Wednesday after allegedly hijacking a bus with schoolchildren aboard and subsequently setting it on fire after tying their hands with plastic electrical ties in an apparent attempt to kill them, sources said.

The children’s terror lasted for almost 40 minutes as the man, angry at government migrant policy, confiscated their phones and said no one would survive.

But one boy, 13-year-old Rahmi, managed to keep hold of his phone and call the police.

The man hijacked the bus with 51 pupils from a middle school in the northern province of Cremona.

The suspect has been named as Ousseynou Sy, a man with a criminal record who is originally from Senegal but has been an Italian citizen since 2004.

He said he wanted to kill himself and “stop the deaths in the Mediterranean,” the sources said.

Sy ordered a teacher to tie the children’s hands with plastic ties but the teacher only attached the ties to four or five of them, and so lightly that they easily freed themselves afterwards, local sources said.

“No one will survive,” Sy said after hijacking the vehicle outside San Donato near Milan, according to Carabinieri Provincial Commander Luca De Marchis.

After being stopped by police, he got off the bus and set it alight, having poured petrol inside.

But the Carabinieri managed to get the children out by smashing windows at the back, the sources said. Before being stopped, the suspect had also tried to ram through a road block. Twelve children and two adults were taken to hospital after suffering smoke inhalation, as was Sy, the sources said.

The bus is a write-off.

A teacher who was with the children said that it was not the first time Sy drove a bus with pupils on board.

“We knew him” the teacher said, adding that the hijacker was angry about the government’s migrant policy.

“He wanted to get to the runway at (Milan’s) Linate (airport)”.

The children’s ordeal lasted nearly 40 minutes, local sources said.

A girl said “he handcuffed us and threatened us. He said that if we moved he would pour our the petrol and light the fire. He kept saying that people in Africa are dying and the fault is Di Maio and Salvini’s. Then the Carabinieri saved us”.

Luigi Di Maio, the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement leader, and Matteo Salvini, leader of the anti-migrant Euroskeptic League, are the two partners in Italy’s populist government which has closed Italy’s ports to migrant rescue NGO ships amid a broader crackdown on migrants.

Another girl said “he took our phones but one schoolmate managed to keep his. We were cuffed with electrician’s ties. He told us nothing would happen but threatened to pour the petrol”.

Rahmi’s friend Adam, 12, said “he was clear-minded, he was smart. The driver took all our phones but he managed to keep one and called the Carabinieri”.

“Later I called the emergency services and we tried to explain where we were”.

Sy will face possible charges of kidnapping, attempted mass murder, causing a fire and resisting arrest, judicial sources said.

“It was a miracle they survived and we have to thank the Carabinieri for that,” said Milan prosecutor Francesco Greco.

He said the prosecutors were weighing terrorism charges against Sy.

“The intention to commit mass murder had started ad the man was about to torch (the children) as he then did the bus,” said Greco, thanking Carabinieri for an operation that was “like something that you see in films about special forces”.

Greco said Sy had admitted his actions had been premeditated.

Sy did not pronounce Islamist phrases, sources said.

Prosecutors said they were trying to establish if Sy, who was employed by the Autoguidovie bus firm, was fit to drive.

Carabinieri questioned Sy’s wife who left the Carabinieri barracks at Castelleone without saying anything to the media.

UK: Corbyn’s Brother Shares Petition Calling for Queen to Save Brexit by Suspending Parliament

Hard-left Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn’s older brother, Piers, has circulated an official petition calling on Queen Elizabeth II to ensure Brexit takes place on March 29, as scheduled in the European Union (Withdrawal) Act of 2018 and repeatedly promised by the Prime Minister, by temporarily proroguing, i.e. suspending, the current parliamentary session.

Jeremy and Piers Corbyn are both long-time critics of the European Union, but while the younger Corbyn’s public position on the bloc changed after he was elevated to the leadership of the largely europhile left-wing opposition party, his older brother has remained staunchly opposed to it.

The celebrity meteorologist, who is also a noted sceptic of the theory of man-made climate change, shared a petition signed by almost 100,000 people calling on the Prime Minister to have the British monarch guarantee Brexit takes place, deal or no deal, on March 29th, by proroguing the parliamentary session until that date — preventing the Remainers-dominated Houses of Parliament from acting to block, delay, or otherwise sabotage it.

Western-Born Muslims ‘More Likely’ To be Drawn to Extremism and Violent Ideas — Study

Muslims born and raised in the West are more likely to support extremist ideas than those who are born elsewhere and who later emigrate to the West, a new study by researchers at a Swedish university has found.

While it is a common assumption that the threat from extremist Islam comes from outside the West — which often leads to calls for lower immigration from places like the Middle East and North Africa — the new study has found that homegrown radicals could be a much bigger problem.

Researchers at Uppsala University in Sweden found that support among Western-born Muslims for extremism often comes from a feeling of being disadvantaged and marginalized in comparison to the majority of the population in those countries.

The Destabilisation of Algeria: New Refugee Influx & a Threat to Europe’s Energy Security

Via Oriental Review

The president of Algeria, 82-year-old Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who has been in power for almost 20 years, has declared that he will not be running for what would have been his fifth term. The announcement was made against the backdrop of widespread proteststhat have been rocking the country for days. Thus, the latest revolution in the Arab world has succeeded. The question is, what will come next?

Despite being laid to rest countless times, the Arab Spring has continued where it was least expected. Algeria has the same explosive cocktail as Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Syria, of course: a young, rapidly growing urban population deprived of jobs and opportunities; corruption and poverty amid opulent wealth and luxury; uneasy relationships between ethnic groups (in Algeria’s case, between the Arabs and the Kabyle people, a Berber ethnic group); Islamist activity; and, finally, an unchanging authoritarian leader who rules with the same unchanging palette of ideas as every other dictatorship — “Who else if not me?”, “It will be worse without me”, “You don’t change horses in midstream” and so on. But judging by how calmly the country endured the turbulent events in nearby Tunisia and Libya, with only localised pockets of unrest, many experts were under the impression that the elderly Bouteflika would simply be able to retire by handing the presidency to whomever he wants — namely Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia, who has the unspoken title of “successor”. Silk Road Debate Inevitable Says China

Italy set to sign memorandum for project during Xi’s visit

(ANSA) — Beijing, March 20 — Beijing said Wednesday that it is normal that Italy’s potential involvement in its Belt and Road Initiative has sparked debate.

The initiative is a massive infrastructure plan that seeks to create a sort of modern-day Silk Road to better connect China with Europe and Africa.

Premier Giuseppe Conte is set to sign a memorandum of understanding related to the project when Chinese President Xi Jinping visits Italy this week as part of a trip that will also take in Monaco and France.

The move has provoked concern from some quarters, including the United States.

“It is inevitable that some misunderstandings and doubts can arise in the process of developing the new Silk Road,” said Vice Foreign Minister Wang Chao.

“But the deeds will speak louder than words. An agreement between China and Italy would be beneficial for the economic development of both”.

Conte said Wednesday that stopping the memorandum “would not safeguard the interests of the country”.

Italy: Govt Confirms World Families Conference Sponsorship

Event criticised over alleged anti-gay, anti-abortion agenda

(ANSA) — Rome, March 20 — Family Minister Lorenzo Fontana said Wednesday that the government still intends to sponsor the controversial World Conference of Families, which is set to take place in Verona March 29-31.

  1. re: New York University has hired a new journalism professor

I would like to think that his students could give him critical reviews when they discover his crooked past, but I am not encouraged by what my daughter has to say about professors.

Her history teacher declared, after handing out teacher evaluation forms to be completed by the students:

“You can write anything you want. I have tenure so F___ You !!”

    • Tenure was supposed to protect Free Speech and has simply made Marxists teachers a protected, vile species for life. May as well give rats protected status inside your home.

    • Student evaluation of teachers is a monstrosity, an utterly disgusting expression of the West’s rot.
No doubt the teacher said “F— U” while smiling — was expecting the brighter students to see the ridiculousness of this institution.
The “F— U” directed by departments and full-timers toward adjuncts is a bigger cause for concern. Adjunct exist as the continual object of an ongoing “F— U”. And are on average far to the right, politically and culturally, of the full-timers.

      • Well, it saddens me to contrast this issue with a History professor friend of mine who says to his classes:

“I work for you. You pay enormous sums of money for university so I will give you my best everyday and my door is always open.”

    Chafing at custom’s chain;
    Again from its brumal sleep
    Wakens the ferine strain.”

Who is more ferine Britain or NZ?

Once Einstein wrote a letter to Freud asking him to invent a method to cure the apparently sane critters of Europe.

The hobbits rejected the call of the ring. 🙂

Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

A sad day for NZ, and though I feel for the families that grieve, politically it is another appeasement to multiculturalism and ultimately to islam.

  6. A remembrance of all terror victims.

……intense, documentary-style thriller based on the four-day ordeal that saw Pakistani militants carry out a series of bombing and shooting attacks, killing at least 174. ……

….the decision was made “out of respect for a country in mourning”.

…. suspended on Monday until March 28

    Lest we forget.

  7. Not content with stirring up his own people, Turkey will be hosting a conference of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to “discuss” the shootings.

Is there an equivalent Christian grouping of nations? This is essentially the International Ummah meeting to work out the best way to use the shooting to push Islam.

    https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2019/03/turkey-calls-oic-meeting-islamophobia-nz-attacks-190321072719814.html

So we’ll see within the next day or so what the outcome is.

    • NZ seems to be going down the tubes.

Funny, I thought it would be the most “resistant” of the anglo countries, as there is very little internal strife there to exploit.

      • The stage had been set in the undercurrents of academia influence, media splurging, the power that certain groups found about 40 years ago, with protesting riots on the streets, stopping international rugby foot games with South Africa in the name of opposing apartheid, and supporting Nelson Mandela.

The pressure on France to go to underground nuclear testing, to finally getting underground nuclear testing banned.
The French did mess up in that they limpet mine bombed a Green Peace boat and tragically a photographer returning to salvage photos, was killed on the 2nd explosion.
That followed on with becoming declarations of being “nuclear free” and stopping all USA navy visits. Even small local government bodies voted in support and put up official signs

There is obviously an international linkage, like originally a legal “same sex” registration, but then it had to go to allow marriage.
It swept the world in just a few years.

There a number of migrants that have come and moved into politics, that is the ones that we can see easily, but there is quite a few in the bureaucracies, that have the very liberal sense and work a slice at a time.

Now this tragedy has allowed them to explode out of the blocks with their narratives, revision and agendas.

We are divided despite the claims to the contrary, with reparations to Maori tribes. Some parts maybe legit, but the flow of money has become a “self fulfilling trough” and more is always needed.

Then versions of “white privilege” translating to all the wrongs of colonists, that have to be continually repaid.

Then just being a welfare state, that has become more of a “hand out” than a “hand up” that even the working people that pay taxes, then have their income supplemented to such an extent that they are not net taxpayers.
With the change of government in 2017 any accountability has been stopped in those departments.

Anything can be done by giving money, that is other people’s money, that is demanded with menaces, whilst now saying that we should see it as “love tax” and to help the government to have a “kindness” and “well being” budget.

Sure there is a tragedy, and there is time to mourn.
But it is a shadow where “opportunity abounds in a tragedy” and many are ignorant of principles, and just what and where the truth is, in looking at a “big picture”.

I can see that this insidious philosophy of guilt to bring about globalism, UN migrant Pact, a, racism, islamophobia, etc. is at many different levels, affecting many countries.

We have had a battle to keep “free speech” when some speakers have been de platformed in the past 6 months, and though some loses, have held ground, and if anything seem to be more able to express things.

This Christchurch shooting has aided their cause, but will they run out of steam? as knowledge, truth, though slow, is always there, even if under a few pillows, like the proverbial pea.

Many thanks to Baron&Dymphna, that encourage, motivate, and inspire, many to stand firm, do what we can, to keep and maintain free speech. Thank you.

    • That is a bizarre decision by the NZ govt. Setting aside the issue of the value of free speech , Jordan Peterson does not advocate violence against Muslims, and based on his statements he is no entho nationalist nor Alt Rightist.
I guess they don’t like his sensible criticisms of Political Correctness.

    • Not government control, but as driven by much media, papers, radio and tv, that even the police question people and any connection or concept will go on the “watch list”.

      https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12215124
“During his tour Peterson was photographed with a fan wearing a T-shirt that read: “I’m a proud Islamaphobe”, along with other derogatory comments about Muslims.” ….
“A decision that Whitcoulls has made in light of some extremely disturbing material being circulated prior, during and after the Christchurch attacks.

“As a business which takes our responsibilities to our communities very seriously, we believe it would be wrong to support the author at this time.”

Social media users have been quick to point out the book store continues to sell books such as Hitler’s “Mein Kampf”. ….

It seems like a “house of bedlam” here and the occupants are in charge.

Administrators, managers, are all running in fear, and of course some of them just decide, as part of their virtual signal.

  8. Jordan Peterson’s book banned, makes sheep think, very dangerous, read today that local rugby club is thinking about renaming their club since Crusaders how they currently call themselves might be offensive to Muslims in light of recent attack(quick suggestion- how bout Prophets martyrs, that has a nice ring to it) . I guess next step is renaming Christchurch with something more Muslim friendly. How bout Jacindistan? After that not many options left on a table except maybe collective suicide because simple looking at white populus of NZ might evoke bad feelings in Muslim community.

  9. The imam or speakers for the NZ national tv and radio broad cast, spoke in part on the fear and problem of “white supremacists” and also the problem of “islamophobia”.
That it needs to be stopped, so we can be one.
No mention in reports that those “words” were spoken, though I did hear them.

Been looking for a transcript, so I can cherry pick it, as does all the media beat ups. 🙂 and nor do I really want to hear it again.

    In the mean time:-
    https://www.radionz.co.nz/news/national/385334/call-to-prayer-and-two-minute-silence-we-are-broken-hearted-but-we-are-not-broken

For me it is love, with truth, and a wrapping of wisdom.
I make no claims of knowing all about the above, as I am no saint. 🙂

    • It is a tragedy, a real mess and mix of views.
      Abridged:-

…… Islamophobia kills. Muslims have felt its pain for years around the world.

Islamophobia is real. It is a targeted campaign to dehumanise and irrationally fear Muslims. To fear what we wear. The choice of food we eat. To fear the way we pray and the way we practise our faith.

We call on governments around the world, including New Zealand’s and its neighbouring countries, to bring an end to hate speech and the politics of fear.

The martyrdom of 50 people and the injury of 42 did not come overnight, it was the result of the anti-Muslim rhetoric of some political leaders, media agencies and others. Last week’s events are proof and evidence to the entire world that terrorism has no colour, has no race and has no religion. The rise of white supremacy and right wing extremism is a great global threat to mankind and this must end now. ……

There is a real chase down on anything white, colonist, privileged, wealth, rich poor gap, wage gender gap, though the ones in academia, media, etc. should step aside often being pale, stale , male, and the older female is being chewed at now. 🙂

Time also allows things to fade, though the court case, will and with more information, knowledge, and some mulling over.
Will this wave be a game changer, or will we recover and be much more wiser.
