Gates of Vienna News Feed 7/14/2018

After Italy refused to let a boat carrying 450 migrants land on its territory, France and Malta each decided to take some of the “refugees”. Meanwhile, Spain’s maritime rescue service rescued 340 migrants in twelve separate vessels, most of them crossing the Strait of Gibraltar from Morocco.

In other news, European Catholic bishops are gathering in Stockholm — where else? — to plan a PR campaign touting the benefits of mass immigration.

A Year After Tax Increase, Illinois is Still in the Red

Last July, lawmakers overrode Gov. Bruce Rauner’s veto, passing a $36.5 billion budget that took an additional $5 billion from taxpayers and ended a more than two-year standoff between the freshman governor demanding pro-business reforms and Democrats in the General Assembly, who passed a budget with the help of a handful of defecting Republicans.

The final vote tallies were slim, but Democrats passed the budget Rauner said in his veto message included “no changes to create jobs and grow our economy. It will push more families and businesses out of our state.”

“Dealers Are Taking Control” — Baltimore Murder Rate Soars as Police Ease Up on Stops

When Attorney General Jeff Sessions said at a gathering of police officials back in May that “if you want crime to go up, let the ACLU run the police department,” he may have had a point. While opponents of “aggressive” police tactics like stop and frisk and other “broken windows”-type policing have complain about the injustice faced by minorities who they say are disproportionately and unfairly targeted by police, the city of Baltimore is demonstrating what happens when police dial back stops for minor violations like street-level drug dealing and other “everyday violations.”

According to USA Today, since the death of Freddie Gray and the arrest of several officers who were charged with murder for allegedly playing a role in his death (he died handcuffed in the back of a police van after reportedly breaking his neck) police in Baltimore have “stopped noticing” small crimes and minor violations. The officers who were charged were acquitted, but the incident ended their careers, and the Baltimore Police Department faced a 2016 Department of Justice investigation that found the city’s police routinely violated the constitutional rights of the city’s residents. More than 150 people have been killed in the city already this year, compared with 342 last year, which was the city’s deadliest on record.

Unsurprisingly, shootings soared…

“Fed Up Populace” Warns San Franciscans “Watch Your Backs… for Homeless People”

An anonymous San Francisco resident took out a full-page ad in the San Francisco Chronicle Friday claiming an encounter with a homeless man at a Neiman Marcus cafe left her feeling “horrified.”

The ad first noted by Business Insider reads “WATCH YOUR BACKS — NOBODY ELSE IS …as if stepping over used syringes and filth in Maiden Lane wasn’t bad enough…”

The woman then goes on to detail the incident in which she says that a “psychotic homeless person” was opening and closing scissors “erratically” behind her which made her fear for her safety while trying to enjoy her lunch.

5 of the Most Controversial Moments From Peter Strzok’s Chaotic Testimony to Congress by Michael Snyder

On Thursday, Peter Strzok finally received his well-deserved congressional grilling, and it was quite a chaotic affair. Over nearly ten hours, there were shouting matches between Strzok and congressional Republicans, there were shouting matches between Republicans and Democrats, and there were quite a few moments that none of us will ever forget. It was a joint hearing of the House Judiciary and Oversight Committees, and the meeting room was absolutely packed. More than 70 members of the House were in attendance, and many came ready with some very pointed questions. The following are five of the most controversial moments from Peter Strzok’s ten hour testimony to Congress…

#5 Bob Goodlatte asks Strzok how he can “smell” Trump supporters at a Wal-Mart in southern Virginia…

Strzok definitely qualifies as a member of “the deep state”, and it is very rare for anyone in “the deep state” to be held accountable on this level.

We are in a struggle for the soul of our government, and if we ever hope to turn things around we have got to clean out swamp creatures such as Peter Strzok.

Antifa Groups Tweet Threats, Smears Targeting GOP

Antifa groups across the country are blasting a Republican bill targeting their preferred approach to political violence, calling the GOP lawmakers “fascists” for proposing the legislation.

The “Unmasking Antifa Act,” which was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on June 8, seeks to “provide penalty enhancements for committing certain offenses while in disguise, and for other purposes.”

Bishop Aubrey Shines: America ‘Won’t Tolerate’ Maxine Waters’ Threats Against Trump Supporters

A coalition of some 800 black pastors representing two million congregants held a press conference on Thursday at the National Press Club to push House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) to censure Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) for encouraging people to confront members of President Donald Trump’s administration.

“This is unacceptable,” Bishop Aubrey Shines of Glory to Glory Ministries said at the press conference.

“This type of rhetoric is something that is just unacceptable in America,” Shines said, citing Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen being harassed while dining at a restaurant in Washington, DC, and White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders and her guests being denied service at a restaurant in rural Virginia.

“The kind of racial divisiveness is something that is helping destroy America as we know it,” Shines said. “This kind of intolerance is something we will not tolerate.”

CRISPR Gene Editing Can Trigger Cancer, Two Studies Warn

As reported by Nature4 in 2016, “Researchers use CRISPR-Cas9 to make precise changes to genomes that remove or edit a faulty gene. It has worked on nearly every creature on which they have tested it, including human embryos.” In the wake of these discoveries, a number of CRISPR-based companies have sprung to life with the hopes of furthering gene editing in everything from food and medicine5 to eventually producing “designer babies” that have had unwanted genetic traits edited out.

However, while CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing is more precise in that you can target a specific area of the genome, two recent studies call for a rethink, as the process of gene editing can trigger cancer.6,7 As noted by STAT News8 these findings could be “a potential game-changer for the companies developing CRISPR-based therapies.”

CRISPR Editing Triggers Tumor Growth

The two studies9,10 were published in Nature medicine, and present a sobering warning to scientists hell-bent on defeating nature. It appears that cells whose genomes are successfully edited by CRISPR-Cas9 have carcinogenic potential, turning them into proverbial ticking time bombs. As reported by STAT News:11

Majority of Clinton Emails Funneled to “Foreign Entity”; When IG Told Strzok — He Completely Ignored

As we sift through the ashes of Thursday’s dumpster-fire Congressional hearing with still employed FBI agent Peter Strzok, Luke Rosiak of the Daily Caller plucked out a key exchange between Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Tx) and Strzok which revealed a yet-unknown bombshell about the Clinton email case.

Nearly all of Hillary Clinton’s emails on her homebrew server went to a foreign entity that isn’t Russia. When this was discovered by the Intelligence Community Inspector General (ICIG), IG Chuck McCullough sent his investigator Frank Ruckner and an attorney to notify Strzok along with three other people about the “anomaly.”

Nasty Skin-Burning Plant is Spreading

A towering, skin-burning, invasive weed has appeared in Virginia, surprising agriculturists as it has usually only been found in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic states, originally planted by beekeepers as the flowers are 2.5 feet across and provide substantial amounts of pollen.

Giant hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum) is a member of the carrot and parsley family of plants and native to Caucasus Mountains on the border of Europe and Asia. The plant was originally introduced to Great Britain as an ornamental due its unique size and impressive flowers. Originally named after the mythical god Hercules, it was then imported to the U.S. and Canada as an ornamental plant in Victorian gardens…

While striking and producing beautiful flowers, the plant also produces a toxic sap, which when in contact with the skin and combined with sunlight, can cause severe irritation, burns and blisters. This phytophotodermatitis is caused by photosensitizing furanocoumarins making the skin photosensitive and unable to protect itself from sunlight. This may cause third-degree burns, affecting layers of the skin down to the dermis.

The plant’s watery sap contains furanocoumarins, a psoralen. The photo toxic effects occur when psoralen binds to nuclear DNA under the influence of ultraviolet radiation and causes the death of affected cells. This irritation may worsen when the skin is moist from sweat or there is dew on the plant.

The reaction may start as quickly as 15 minutes after exposure, although it often takes 48 hours for blisters to form. These blisters may become pigmented and scab over, taking weeks to heal. The scars left from hogweed burns can last for months or even years. Once exposed to hogweed sap, the skin can remain photosensitive for several years. If the sap gets into your eyes it can cause photosensitivity of the cornea and result in temporary or permanent blindness.

New Mechanisms “Guarantee” Transparency Ahead of U.S. Midterm Elections, Facebook Executive Says

Facebook’s top security executive Guy Rosen spoke to Calcalist about the technology behind the company’s war on fake news

At the end of 2017, Facebook’s vice president of product management Guy Rosen received a personal email from Mark Zuckerberg, sent days before the budget for 2018 was allotted. “Before I begin, how much do you need?” he asked Rosen, making it clear that Rosen has a blank check as far as resources go.

“At that moment, the penny dropped,” Rosen said Tuesday in an interview with Calcalist. “We were the top priority.”

Rosen is Facebook’s top security executive. He is in charge of dealing with some of the issues that have been at the heart of the criticism levied against the media company in recent years, such as fake news, hate speech, and graphic and violent content.

[…]

Rosen believes that what happened around the 2016 elections would not repeat itself as the 2018 U.S. midterm elections draw near. In May, Facebook began labeling political ads on the Facebook and Instagram platforms as well as including a “paid for by” disclosure. “We’re making big changes to the way ads with political content work on Facebook to help prevent abuse, especially during elections,” Facebook said in a post announcing the new feature.

“We are still in the midst of development but the defense mechanisms we have put in place can guarantee that what happened in 2016 would not happen again, as far as transparency goes,” Rosen said. “On the other hand, there are people who go to work in the morning and their job is to figure out how to bypass the barriers we put in place,” he said.

Facebook has people trying to hack its own systems and barricades to identify potential exploitations methods, he said. “We also work with law enforcement agencies and an FBI task force,” he added…

EU Demands Israel Reopen Crossing to Gaza

The European Union on Friday blasted Israel for closing the Kerem Shalom crossing to Gaza for non-humanitarian cases and demanded that Israel reverse the decision.

On Monday, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman announced that the Kerem Shalom crossing would be temporarily closed. The decision was made in response to the continued arson terror perpetrated by Gazan terrorists using incendiary kites and balloons sent from Gaza into Israeli territory, as well as other attempts at terror attacks.

“The Israeli decision to close the Kerem Shalom crossing point, except for humanitarian supplies, and to restrict the fishing zone for Palestinians risks further aggravating the already dire economic situation in Gaza,” said a statement by the EU spokesperson on Friday.

“The EU expects Israel to reverse these decisions,” it added.

The statement also said, “Hamas and other actors in Gaza must cease and refrain from violent actions and provocations against Israel, including the launching of incendiary kites and balloons with the aim to damage Israeli property and assets.”[…]

The Peril on Your Plate: Film Explores the Human Health Effects of Genetic Engineering and Chemical Agriculture

After being told by her doctor that genetically engineered (GE) food and pesticides could be responsible for her son’s food allergies, Ekaterina Yakovleva set out to investigate. Her quest for answers was captured by the Russian Times in the featured film, “The Peril on Your Plate: Genetic Engineering and Chemical Agriculture.”

The film shows Yakovleva and her team traveling the world to meet “the people who lift the lid on the perils of GMOs and the chemicals used in the industry,” as well as proponents of GMOs who argue that genetic engineering is a “high-tech” solution to feeding the world’s growing population. Advocates for genetic engineering tell Yakovleva that the technology is beneficial to farmers in that it increases resistance to pests and disease, as well as produces higher yields. But Yakovleva isn’t convinced.

She learns nothing could be further from the truth after witnessing the devastation caused by mass farmer suicides in India as a result of the failure of Monsanto’s Bt cotton. Yakovleva visits the U.K. where she meets Lady Margaret, Countess of Mar, a member of the House of Lords and a former farmer who suffered from chemical use, and then to the U.S. where she meets with Zen Honeycutt of Moms Across America about the link between GMOs, pesticides and chronic disease in humans.

What Is Genetic Engineering?

In order to better understand genetic engineering and its impact on human health, Yakovleva starts to research the technique and how it’s used. She learns that genetic engineering enables DNA to be transferred not only between different kinds of plants, but even between different kingdoms, meaning scientists can take DNA from an insect or animal and insert it into the genome of a plant.

Many GMO proponents claim that genetic engineering is just an extension of natural breeding methods, and just as safe. Nothing could be further from the truth — on both counts. Genetic engineering is radically different from conventional breeding techniques used to improve a crop. For starters, it’s a laboratory-based technique allowing scientists to create a food that could never be created by nature.

Expert: Why Progressives Push for More Illegal Immigration

Loudon said the Democrats’ goal of securing a permanent governing majority means that illegal immigration is the top priority.

“Because they understand that other policies can be reversed, but if you flood this country with another 10, 20, 30 million people who will vote reliably for the Democratic Party—which is completely infiltrated by Marxists and communists—you basically give the communists complete power over this country,” Loudon said.

“It’s nothing to do with compassion. It’s nothing to do with helping people from the Third World. It’s just creating a voting base for the left that cannot be beaten.”

Loudon said the push for illegal immigrant voters is behind much of the voter fraud and the fight against voter ID laws.

“Probably up to 5 percent of the electorate are illegal voters. And in most, elections are won by less than 5 percent, or many elections are,” he said.

Microsoft Threatens Trump on Middle-Class Visa Outsourcing

Microsoft’s president is threatening to move white-collar jobs out of the United States if President Donald Trump does not allow the company to hire foreign graduates for the U.S.-based jobs.

“We don’t want to move jobs out of the United States and we hope that we don’t see decision making in Washington that would force us to do that,” said Brad Smith, the company’s president and chief legal officer told CNBC on July 12.

The company and its subcontractors already employ thousands of foreign college-grads via the H-1B, Optional Practical Training, and Employment Authorization Document temporary visa-worker programs.

These visa-outsourcing programs already keep a shifting population of at least 1.5 million foreign college graduates in U.S. jobs.

The issue is heating up because President Donald Trump’s “Hire American” policy has prompted agency officials to begin canceling a visa-worker program invented by officials working for former President Barack Obama. Under the so-called “H4 EAD” program, officials have granted work permits to roughly 100,000 spouses of foreign visa-workers, even though Congress bars the employment of foreign workers.

Matteo Salvini, also deputy prime minister and leader of the nationalist League party, continued the hardline approach to migrants crossing the Mediterranean that has already seen him clash with Malta and other EU nations over a fishing vessel currently taking 450 people towards the Italian island of Lampedusa.

Specter of Communism: Chapter Seven: How the Devil Destroys the Family (Part II)

[…]

Modern feminism openly proclaims that its aim is to destroy the traditional family. Typical statements include the following: “The precondition for women’s liberation is an end to the marriage system.” [11] “The choice to serve and be protected and plan towards being a family maker is a choice that shouldn’t be.” [12] “We can’t destroy the inequities between men and women until we destroy marriage. Specter of Communism: Chapter Seven: How the Devil Destroys the Family (Part I)

[…]

Kate Weigand, an American scholar, points out in her book Red Feminism that feminism in fact did not stay quiet in the United States from the early twentieth century to the 1960s. During that period, a large group of red feminist writers with communist backgrounds paved the way for the subsequent second-wave feminist movement. These include Susan Anthony, Eleanor Flex, Gerda Lerner, Eve Merriam, and the like. As early as 1946, Anthony applied the Marxist analytical method to draw an analogy between the white oppressing the black, and the male oppressing the female. However, due to the McCarthyism of the period, such writers no longer talked about their red background.

In the Muslim segment of Russian social networks this video made a lot of noise.
The ROC of the KGB managed to force even the supreme mufti to kiss the icon.

Judging by the comments in social networks, you can see the barrier that separates the so-called “traditional Islam” (financed by the Kremlin) and “radical Islam.”
I would not relax on the site of the Kremlin and was preparing for the worst.

  3. The corporate monster, Microsoft, threatening to move jobs out of the USA if immigrants can’t fill them? Just move to India you freaks.

    • Microsoft is sliding down… Windows 10 is one of the worst software, the only thing it’s doing well are constant downloads of patches and spying on their owners…

  4. “It’s nothing to do with compassion. It’s nothing to do with helping people from the Third World. It’s just creating a voting base for the left that cannot be beaten.”

Indeed. The truth about the open borders agenda.

    • Exactly. The working class didn’t “get with the program” (and are in fact on the other side), and are thus written off. A replacement for the “working class” needs to be “imported”.

Productive immigrants tend to become right-wing and a part of “us”, so those must be avoided as well, obviously.

    • That certainly was the case Labour made to itself in Britain when it began importing so many voters. And under LBJ, the same calculus was figured out by the Democrats.

Fortunately for the U.S., many Mexicans (at least those of Spanish ethnicity) begin the trek toward constitutional freedom, away from the dole.

Germany is a puzzle, though: it already had a burgeoning estranged underclass in its Turkish residents. Why add to that??

      • I don’t think our Turks are estranged in any way, they know exactly what they want. They are just working to increase their numbers. For the Left, it’s also a numbers game, at least this is the only explanation I have for such short-sighted behaviour which will lead to their own destruction in the end. But they are not sitting securely in the saddles of leadership, conservatives keep winning elections here and there, some places are all black and in some it goes back and forth. They must have a motivation to import more voters, dumb as the Left is. (If anyone has a better analysis, I’m happy to learn it. It’s all very perplexing indeed.)

  5. How is everyone enjoying this sunny Sunday? Excited about the tainted World Cup victory handed to the French Foreign Legion? Get ready to have the $ media beat us over the head with that story for the next few months.

Islamic types are already trying to claim that, “Africans and Muslims gave France another World Cup, so France should give them justice.” Uh, what?

I spent most of the weekend volunteering at a local festival. Assuming the festival goers were a fairly broad cross-section of the popluation, I don’t even know where to begin with all the troubling signs I saw for the future of the West. Forget about going to Mars, will never happen. Heck, I will be shocked if we manage to make it back to the moon.
