U.S. Fourth-Quarter Growth Revised Up to 2.9 Percent; Consumer Spending Surges

WASHINGTON (Reuters) — U.S. economic growth slowed less than previously estimated in the fourth quarter as the biggest gain in consumer spending in three years partially offset the drag from a jump in imports.

Gross domestic product expanded at a 2.9 percent annual rate in the final three months of 2017, instead of the previously reported 2.5 percent, the Commerce Department said in its third estimate for the quarter on Wednesday. That was a slight moderation from the third quarter’s brisk 3.2 percent pace.

FBI: Package That Caused Closure of Streets in NE Washington Tied to Other Packages Containing Explosives

The FBI says a suspicious package that caused the temporarily closed a section of V Street NE at Bladensburg Road on Wednesday morning is connected to a series of packages containing explosive black powder sent to federal facilities in the Washington area.

Law enforcement agencies in the D.C. area have been on extra high alert after a collection of packages containing explosive black powder showed up at government facilities around the Washington area. Thanh Cong Phan was arrested Monday and charged with sending the 11 packages.

Officials on Tuesday cautioned that additional packages may have been sent to mail-processing facilities in the D.C. area and said they remain on alert.

In a tweet Wednesday, the FBI confirmed that one of the packages was discovered at a government mail facility in the 3300 block of V Street NE…

Judicial Watch Sues for Records on Taxpayer-Funded Soros Projects Overseas

The conservative watchdog Judicial Watch has filed a lawsuit to try to obtain records from the State Department about the taxpayer-funded political activities of George Soros’s groups in Colombia and Romania.

The watchdog said it took the action because the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) failed to respond to its Freedom of Information Act requests last fall for records relating to contracts, grants and other “allocations/disbursements of funds” by Open Society Foundation offices in Romania and Colombia.

The watchdog is also seeking information about Soros’s activities in Macedonia and Albania.

Quebec Deputy Minister Gets Pushback After Questioning Place of Indigenous ‘Traditional Knowledge’

MONTREAL — The letter, sent last month from a Quebec environment official to one of his federal counterparts, does not seem all that inflammatory. The Quebec official notes that proposed federal legislation requiring that traditional Indigenous knowledge be taken into account when assessing environmental impacts permits a “very broad” definition of such knowledge. And, he adds, the bill should be clearer about how traditional knowledge is to be weighed against scientific data when deciding whether a project should proceed.

But when the letter recently became public, it provoked an outraged reaction from Quebec Indigenous leaders, an apology from two Quebec cabinet ministers and, this week, an accusation of racism from a University of Ottawa law professor.

In a letter published Monday in Le Devoir, Thomas Burelli and seven of his colleagues at the university said it was “offensive” of Quebec to attempt to favour science in a “hierarchy of knowledges.”

Burelli said in an interview Tuesday that the Feb. 6 letter from Quebec deputy minister Patrick Beauchesne reflects a “racism of intelligence. It is saying we think there is a form of intelligence that is superior, that of science. They are methods developed by the West and so they must take precedence over Indigenous knowledge.”…

Caroline Glick: Ronald Lauder Turns on Israel

On Monday, a major American Jewish leader published a call to arms against Israel in the New York Times.

In an op-ed under the headline, “Israel’s self-inflicted wounds,” World Jewish Congress President Ronald Lauder warned that Israel is driving itself to the brink of disaster.

The implicit message of Lauder’s article is that President Donald Trump is too good to Israel. He needs to adopt a far cooler policy towards the immoral, undeserving Jewish state.

Lauder is no run-of-the-mill American Jewish leader. He has been in the spotlight for 30 years.

Lauder was an intimate friend of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for twenty years. The two men had a very public falling out a decade ago after an Israeli television station partially owned by Lauder broadcast a venomously hostile string of stories against Netanyahu.

Today, Lauder has an even more powerful friend: Donald Trump.

As a New York socialite and heir to the Estee Lauder cosmetics empire, over the years Lauder developed a close relationship with real estate magnate Trump. That friendship extended into the presidential race. And for the past 14 months, Lauder has had closer ties to the President than any other American Jewish leader.

When a man of Lauder’s stature writes Israel is “endangering the future of the country,” most people take his warning seriously.

So is he right? Is it time to man the barricades?

The good news is: no. Lauder’s warnings are no more than a collection of anti-Israel slanders…

‘Having Female Terrorist Leaders is Proof of Gender Equality’

Having female terrorist leaders is proof of gender equality in Fatah, Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas’ secretary-general said.

At a recent ceremony at the El-Bireh High School for Girls, school principal Nida Abd Rabbo announced that promoting terrorist murderer Dalal Mughrabi as a role model to female students is an “educational responsibility,” the Palestinian Media Watch (PMW) reported.

Last week, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, the official PA daily, wrote, “It’s [the Al-Yasser Cultural Forum’s] goal is to strengthen the affiliation with Palestine and its history, and to adhere to the Palestinian identity, because this is a great educational responsibility. The forum’s goal is also to return the glory to the fighting Palestinian girls and women such as Dalal Mughrabi and others who sacrificed their lives for Palestine, and also to provide information and knowledge to these female students during recesses…”

Dalal Mughrabi led the most lethal terror attack in Israel’s history, known as the Coastal Road massacre. In 1978, she and other Fatah terrorists hijacked a bus on Israel’s Coastal Highway, murdering 37 civilians, 12 of them children, and wounding over 70.

PA Education Chief Sabri Saidam and Fatah Movement Central Committee member Jamal Muhaisen were also present at the ceremony. PMW has documented that 5 PA schools are named after terrorist Dalal Mughrabi and dozens of other schools are named after other terrorist murderers.[…]

Population Authority: Half of the Asylum Seekers Can Stay if We Deport the Rest

The Population Authority plans to deport only single, male, working-age asylum seekers, and hopes to give some type of permanent status to African women and children migrants, according to Population Immigration and Borders Authority director Shlomo Mor-Yosef.This is a departure from previous statements from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that women and children asylum seekers are not slated for deportation “at this stage” but could be in the future.

“We can be more generous with the people who stay if we send the people out that we can send out,” Mor-Yosef told The Times of Israel. “We need to do a trade-off. We can give the women and children status, if we send out the single men. The families can stay.”

Mor-Yosef estimated that approximately half of the 38,000 asylum seekers in Israel fit the profile of unmarried male asylum seekers of working age and should be deported.

“We think that about 80 percent [of the African migrants in Israel] are economic migrants and 20% are true refugees,” Mor-Yosef said. “If you look at the profile of the community here, most are men of working age. Generally when you see a refugee population it’s more women and children.”…
