Italy: Supervision of Four Lenders ‘Insistent’ — BOI

No pressure on Popolare Vicenza says Barbagallo

(ANSA) — Rome, December 12 — The head of the Bank of Italy’s supervision Carmelo Barbagallo on Tuesday defended the central bank’s action in supervising four middle-sized regional lenders that went insolvent, calling it “insistent” during an audition with Parliament’s commission of inquiry the banking crisis.

“Irregularities were immediately brought to the attention of judicial authorities”, he said regarding on Banca Etruria, Banca Marche, Cariferrara and Carichieti.

He added that “the responses of the four banks were unsatisfactory”.

“Supervising authorities cannot replace the subjects under supervision to prevent situations from degenerating”.

Four good banks formed from the positive assets of the lenders were taken over by bigger banks.

Barbagallo also told the commission that the Bank of Italy neither “asked nor encouraged nor, least of all, favored” Banca Popolare di Vicenza to buy Banca Etruria.

At the time, the central bank’s “supervision did not have the elements to counter in advance such an initiative which, if it had turned into a formal request, would have been examined in-depth”.

Earlier this year Italy pledged up to 17 billion euros to clean up Banca Popolare di Vicenza and another lender in the region, Veneto Banca, in the country’s biggest rescue on record.

The measure included state support for Intesa Sanpaolo to buy the two lenders’ good assets for a token amount.

That’s right: as of this moment it is official that bitcoin is now the biggest bubble in history, having surpassed the Tulip Mania of 1634-1637.

Cause of Skirball Fire Was Illegal Cooking in Homeless Camp, Officials Say

An illegal cooking fire at a homeless encampment was determined to be the cause of the Skirball fire, which began last week, authorities said Tuesday.

The fire was sparked just before 5 a.m. Dec. 6 in a brush area adjacent to where Sepulveda Boulevard crosses under the 405 Freeway, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

The LAFD’s Arson-County-Terrorism Section investigated the fire and the results were released via email Tuesday afternoon.

“At the time of the LAFD’s arrival there were no individuals present at the area of origin,” LAFD spokesman Peter Sanders said in the release.

No arrests have been made in connection to the blaze.

Hypocrite Gillibrand Won’t Disavow Sexual Predator Bill Clinton

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is at war with Donald Trump over accusations of sexual assault yet failed to disavow Bill Clinton over his far more substantial acts of sexual predation and has taken at least six political donations in the past from Harvey Weinstein.

Gillibrand told CNN on Monday that Trump “should be fully investigated and he should resign” over accusations that he assaulted women, adding, “President Trump has committed assault, according to these women, and those are very credible allegations of misconduct and criminal activity.”

Trump hit back this morning with a tweet in which he said Gillibrand was “someone who would come to my office “begging” for campaign contributions not so long ago (and would do anything for them).”

Family members of the failed New York City terror bomber were blasted on social media Tuesday after they accused police of heavy-handed tactics — a charge that came mere hours after their son attempted to massacre civilians in a crowded subway passageway.

“Let me get this correct, your son walks in a public place wearing a bomb and your outrage at the behavior of the police…too bad get over it!!!” the Sergeant’s Benevolent Association tweeted, representing just a small sample of the public outcry directed at the family of Akayed Ullah.

“Eurosion”: Muslim Majority in Thirty Years?

by Giulio Meotti

Even if all current 28 EU members, plus Norway and Switzerland, closed their borders to migrants, the Islamic population will continue to exponentiate…. Today, it is an increase of six million in seven years. And tomorrow?

What will happen in major European cities, where the Muslim communities are currently based? Will London, Marseille, Stockholm, Brussels, Amsterdam, Antwerp and Birmingham all have Muslim majorities?

Under the “medium” and “high” projections in Pew’s scenarios, how can Europe preserve all its most precious gifts — freedom of expression, separation of church and state, freedom of conscience, rule of law and equality between men and women?

Austria Gas Plant Burns After Deadly Explosion

A big blast has rocked a major natural gas hub in Austria, killing one person and injuring at least 18, police say.

A fire followed the blast which happened around 08:45 (07:45 GMT) at the Baumgarten site, just east of the capital Vienna, near the Slovak border.

On Twitter, Austrian police said the situation was under control and a technical fault had caused the blast.

The flow of Russian gas to Europe has dropped, triggering price hikes. Italy declared a state of emergency.

Baumgarten is a key hub for imported Russian gas, which is sent on to a number of European countries.

Emmanuel Macron to Clash With Corsica After Rejecting Calls to Take Control

EMMANUEL Macron is on a collision course with Corsica after nationalists won regional elections based on a campaign rejecting French control.

But Paris refused to make major concessions to the French-controlled island.

The Corsican nationalists Pè a Corsica (For Corsica) were given a major boost to their cause on Sunday when they took a decisive victory in regional elections, winning two thirds of the seats in the new regional council that takes office on January 1, 2018.

The nationalist alliance was formed two years ago by independents Gilles Simeoni and Jean-Guy Talamoni.

The Corsican cause, while having some similarities to a number of nationalist causes that have swept through Europe recently, is slightly different with the nationalists while not advocating total independence.

EU States and Israel Sign Gas Pipeline Deal

Cyprus, Greece, Italy, and Israel have signed up to a gas pipeline that would reduce EU dependency on Russia.

The EastMed pipeline is to ship up to 16 billion cubic metres (bcm) of gas a year from the Levantine Basin near Israel and Cyprus to Greece and Italy from 2025.

That amounts to just 5 percent of EU annual consumption, but it would offset the 100 bcm a year that the EU buys from Russia.

Flow of Gas From Russia to Italy Via Austria Interrupted

Problem follows explosion at distribution facility

(ANSA) — Milan, December 12 — The flow of gas from Russia to Italy has been interrupted after an explosion at a distribution hub in Austria on Tuesday. “The system has been turned off and it is out of order,” read a statement on the Gas Connect Austria website. “The transit through Austria towards south and south-east is compromised until further notice”. Italian gas infrastructure company SNAM said that gas supplies to end users will not be affected. It said that the security of the Italian system was “guaranteed by stocks made available by SNAM”.

It added that gas flows “could resume within the day if initial reports that there is no damage to the transport infrastructure are confirmed”. Industry Minister Carlo Calenda said that the government is set to declare a state of emergency.

“Today there was an accident at an gas-intersection point in Austria, due to which we have a serious supply problem, in particular on the Austrian section from Russia,” Calenda said.

“If we had the TAP, we would not have to declare a state of emergency today for this lack of supply,” he added, referring to the pipeline from Azerbaijan to Italy.

“It is necessary to diversity gas supplies”.

Calenda’s ministry said in a statement that does not mean the breakdown of gas flows would affect end users.

It said the gas that underground gas stocks can make up for the interruption of flows. Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi said Tuesday that there was no alarm within the energy industry about the interruption, but he added that prices were going up. “If it finishes tomorrow, it is not a problem,” Descalzi said about the accident in Austria that interrupted the supplies.

“Even if it lasted weeks, it is a thing we can compensate for. There is no alarm among the (sector) operators. “The gas price is going up. It depends on how long the problem will last.

“It takes place within a scenario that leads to a general increase in prices”.

Geert Wilders: Pew Research Study on Muslim Migration Confirms it is “Time to Get Tough”

The bell is tolling for Europe. All the warning signs are turned on red. A demographic catastrophe is in the making. If Europe fails to make a stand, its Judeo-Christian civilization is about to be blown away.

Last week, the renowned Pew Research Center published updated figures about the growing Muslim population in the broader EU region (i.e. the 28 European Union member states plus Switzerland and Norway). The figures are truly dramatic. Unless there are radical changes to the present policies towards immigration, 30.6% of the population in Sweden will be Islamic by the middle of the century. Sweden is as good as finished.

But the situation elsewhere is hardly better. 19.7% in Germany, 18% in France, 17.2 % in Britain, and 15.2% in the Netherlands. This is what Pew expects to happen if the migration patterns continue at the 2014-2016 levels. Pew also calculated what will happen if the current refugee crisis comes to an end but regular immigration continues at present level.

Under this scenario, the number of Muslims by 2050 is still bound to rise to 20.5% in Sweden, 17.4% in France, 16.7% in the UK, 12.5% in the Netherlands, and 10.8% in Germany.

“This is a broad-based attempt to infiltrate in particular parliaments, ministries and government agencies,” Maassen said.

In addition, Chinese hackers increasingly are launching attacks on European companies through trusted suppliers, he alleged.
