Beltway Sniper Lee Boyd Malvo Gets Life Sentence Tossed in Federal Court

A federal judge has tossed four life sentences handed to Lee Boyd Malvo for his role in the Beltway sniper killings in 2002.

Seventeen at the time, Malvo and John Allen Muhammad shot 13 people and killed 10 across Northern Virginia over several weeks.

Muhammad was executed in 2009 after he was sentenced to death in Prince William County.

Malvo had been expected to serve life in prison without parole after convictions in Virginia and Maryland.

Now 32, Malvo has challenged his sentencing after the Supreme Court ruled in 2012 that juveniles shouldn’t be sentenced to life in prison without parole. Last year, the court ruled that decision could be retroactive.

On Friday, U.S. District Judge Raymond Jackson in Norfolk ordered that Malvo receive new sentencing hearings in Virginia, writes USA Today.

Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Ray Morrogh told the paper that the state can appeal Jackson’s ruling. If not, he planned to pursue another life sentence.

Harvard President Defends Free Speech in Commencement Speech; Harvard Still Actively Suppresses Student Rights

Yesterday, Harvard celebrated its 366th commencement, and those watching in the audience and at home were treated to an ironic display as Harvard President Drew Gilpin Faust gave an address in full support of free speech.

The speech includes an eloquent defense of the merits of free speech, making many of the points that FIRE has been making and endorsing since our founding in 1999. Especially compelling is Faust’s nuanced treatment of the cost of freedom of expression, how that cost is necessarily paid for the pursuit of the truth, and the responsibility it places in us as members of a liberal society.

A Very Popular Pope, But Not Among the Bishops

With the appointment as president of Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti, after that of the secretary general three years ago, Pope Francis now has full control of the Italian episcopal conference, one third of whose bishops have been installed by him, even in dioceses of the first rank like Bologna, Palermo, the vicariate of Rome, and soon also Milan.

Appointments are a key element in the strategy of Jorge Mario Bergoglio. It should suffice to look at how he is reshaping in his image the college of cardinals, which in the future will elect his successor. After the latest batch of cardinals, announced one week ago for the end of June, chances are slimmer that the next pope could mark a return to the past.

Italy aside, however, winning the agreement of the bishops is anything but easy for Francis.

The only national episcopates that he can count on today are those of Germany, Austria, and Belgium, nations in which the Catholic Church is in the most dramatic decline.

While on the contrary the more vital Churches of Africa are those that stood together, in the two combative synods on the family, against the innovations desired by the pope…

Ex-Guantanamo Bay Inmate is Arrested After Being Linked to an ISIS Recruiting Network Eight Years After He Was Released From the Controversial Prison

A former Guantanamo Bay inmate is among six people from an alleged ISIS recruiting network who were detained on Tuesday.

Sabir Mahfouz Lahmar was one of the six suspects arrested in Bordeaux as part of the crackdown, a French judicial source said.

Lahmar was freed from the US detention center in Cuba in 2009 after France agreed to accept him, the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed.

The 48-year-old was one of six Algerians detained in Bosnia in 2001 on suspicion of plotting to bomb the US embassy in Sarajevo.

Sabir Mahfouz Lahmar (left and right) has been arrested for allegedly being part of an ISIS recruitment network in France eight years after he was freed from Guantanamo Bay

The Justice Department later backed off the allegations, but held the men at Guantanamo for years.

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy agreed to take him in April 2009, and Lahmar moved to Bordeaux later that year.

The French official said Lamar, at 48, is the oldest of the four men and two women who were arrested and said that there were no indications the group was plotting an attack…

Media Ignores Ongoing Socialist Disaster Unfolding in Venezuela

Media Research Center (MRC), the conservative media watchdog whose stated mission is to “prove through sound scientific research, that liberal bias in the media does exist,” reported on Tuesday more evidence that the media is now guilty of publishing “no news,” at least when the subject is the ongoing meltdown taking place in Venezuela.

Readers of these pages are well-informed about that meltdown: More than 50 protestors have been killed, with thousands wounded or jailed; inflation is making the bolivar nearly worthless (but with so little on the shelves to purchase it doesn’t matter); Venezuelans are down to two meals a day, with citizens eating stray dogs when they can be found and zoo animals and race horses being slaughtered for food; medicines are increasingly unavailable; hospital and medical services are declining, resulting in hundreds of babies dying following childbirth, and on and on.

And yet, as this horrific tale of socialist destruction plays out, the mainstream media has not only downplayed its coverage, it has all but eliminated it. According to the MRC, “From March 2013 (after the death of strongman Venezuelan president Hugh Chavez) through May 29, 2017, the ABC, CBS and NBC evening news shows have aired a mere 25 stories, totaling 28 minutes, 39 seconds of coverage — barely 30 seconds per month — to the rapidly worsening situation in Venezuela.”

A Syrian teenager arrested on suspicion of planning a terror attack in Berlin has been released after no incriminating evidence was found.

The 17-year-old asylum seeker was arrested in the Uckermark region, north-east of Berlin, on Tuesday.

Police said that he was arrested after a tip-off that he had sent a message to his family saying farewell and that he was joining the “jihad”.

But German media reports now suggest that the message was mistranslated.

  1. Dear Lord, why do I come here in the morning? I start my day with all the bad news and isn’t that somewhat stupid on my part?

I know this is PC incorrect, but migrant children are not as intelligent as Swedish children and that is just a face, even if it is impolite to say it.

    • I believe the average IQ of Muslims varies between 64 in Somalia and the dizzy heights of 82 in Egypt. Search it. The apparent cleverness of some in the media stems from animal cunning, not intelligence.

Centuries of in-breeding with first cousins has had a disastrous genetic effect on both their brains and their bodies. Search for financial drain on European health services caused by genetic abnormalities in Muslims and their children.

    • I start my day with all the bad news and isn’t that somewhat stupid on my part?

As America’s Bard, Mark Twain, was known to say:

“Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.”

  2. There are 1.5 billion Roman Catholics. Popes come and go, the Faithful remain. Pius XII has been endlessly attacked by Marxists for over half a century while John Paul II is ignored for defeating communism in East Europe, as it promptly spread into the West to take over most governments and undermine institutions like marriage between a man and a woman.

A closer relationship with the Christians of Russia seems imperative in this endless battle between Good and Evil. Increasing the number of exorcists may prove to be Francis’s most lasting legacy. As for the West, it no longer believes and can’t even propagate. No one can blame Pope Francis for THAT!

  3. “In other news, an “Australian” woman who allegedly sent her daughters to Africa to undergo FGM has requested to act pro se in her upcoming trial in Brisbane.”

She is doing the same thing jihad killers do when they openly stab kuffers in public, then sit and wait for the police and brag about what they did.

They are showing they have no respect for the legal system of the country. By “showing” I mean, making a big point of it with every intention. They are showing that adhering to sharia is significant to them, and the course of their life in a kuffir country is not.

In a sense, they are correct. They cannot really be punished, as they simply don’t care.

The only real defense against committed sharia Muslims is to keep them out.
