Gates of Vienna News Feed 4/13/2017

The news feed is light tonight. It’s possible that the news has taken a break because of Holy Week. Or there may be other reasons.

The big story of the day was the dropping of a Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb (MOAB, a.k.a. the “Mother of All Bombs”) by the U.S. Air Force in Afghanistan. The Afghan MOAB was the most powerful non-nuclear explosive ever detonated in combat. It was designed to destroy a vast tunnel complex set up by the Islamic State.

Italy Should Prepare for End of QE

Healthy public finances necessary to contain interest spending

(ANSA) — Rome, April 12 — Italy should be prepared for the end of the European Central Bank’s bond-buying programme, quantitative easing (QE), by the end of next year, according to the government’s economic and financial blueprint, the DEF.

Healthy public finances are a prerequisite for containing spending on interests on Italy’s big public debt, the DEF said, freeing up resources for”cutting the tax burden, investments and social inclusion”. The ECB’s QE programme has helped weaker eurozone economies recover from the financial crisis more than they would otherwise have done.

‘Frexit is Nothing Extraordinary’ Le Pen Ally Backs France to Ditch EU

MARINE LE PEN’S campaign manager has asserted leaving the European Union is a necessity in order to resolve France’s economic woes.

The Front National figure demanded the country would need to “free ourselves” from the grips of Brussels in order to introduce significant financial reform.

Ms Le Pen, a outspoken critic of the anti-democratic bloc, has promised voters the ability to determine their own future, in the run-up to the French presidential election.

Speaking before the first round of voting on April 23, she told her countrymen and women an “important part of my protect is to regain our sovereignty” from the ailing European project.

Reinforcing her argument, David Ratchline, Ms Le Pen’s close campaign ally, told CNBC the EU’s policy for globalisation and international trade hinders France’s industry.

Sick Moment Muslim Teacher Demonstrates How a Man Should Beat Women With a Stick — as Islamic Group Says a Husband’s Violence Towards His Wife is a ‘Beautiful Blessing’

Muslim men are allowed to hit their wives if they disobey them and domestic violence is a ‘beautiful blessing’, according to the women’s branch of a radical Islamic group.

Sydney primary school teacher Reem Allouche told the women’s arm of hardline political group Hizb ut-Tahrir that men are permitted to hit women with sticks.

During the 30-minute discussion at a meeting in Sydney ‘s west, Ms Allouche and fellow panellist Atika Latifi — who are both wearing headscarves — describe how beating women is a ‘symbolic act’.

At one point they even demonstrated how to use a small stick called a ‘sivaak’ to hit ‘disobedient’ women.

The women agree that they should only be beaten if they are caught ‘committing sin’ — pointing out that this means seriously disrespecting Allah or their husbands.

‘Disobedience to the husband. Immoral acts or cheating. Admitting anyone to the home that the husband doesn’t like,’ Ms Latifi explains…

Di Maio Slammed for Saying Italy Importing Romania Criminals

‘Idiotic’ statements says Pittella

(ANSA) — Rome, April 12 — Anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S) bigwig Luigi Di Maio was slammed Wednesday for saying Romania was exporting 40% of its criminals to Italy while Italy was exporting jobs to Romania.

Gianni Pittella, the European Parliament caucus leader for the Socialists and Democrats, accused Di Maio, the Lower House deputy Speaker of saying”idiotic” things.

Di Maio responded by saying his assertion was supported by Romanian authorities.

“There’s an inarguable fact, that 40% of those sought on international warrants issued by Bucharest are in Italy,” Di Maio said.

“I’m not saying that, then Romanian justice minister Catalin Predoiu said it in 2009 and the data were confirmed the other day by Messina prosecutor Sebastiano Ardita.

The chair of the Romanians in Italy association, Eugen Tertelac, described Di Maio’s statements as “populist claims” for “electoral ends” which “could ruin relations between our two countries”.

‘Paradox’ Third of Migrants Rescued by NGOs — Frontex

‘Quite strange’ says Leggeri

Frontex chief Fabrice Leggeri said this was “quite strange” when “therehave never been so many public vessels deployed in the sea by the EU and Italy”. The quota picked up by Frontex is only 12% and that of Eunavfor Med only around 10%, he said. NGOs have been accused of helping migrant traffickers by going very close to the Libyan coast in response to migrant phone calls.

Leggeri said that in several cases Frontex had found that the smugglershad given migrants the phone numbers of NGOs.

  1. Years ago when I was deployed to Afghanistan I recall a humorous incident that made the rounds of the command group I was assigned to. It seemed that during an air attack upon a compound where small arms fire had been coming from, the aircraft assigned to attack, a B-1 bomber, had inadvertantly released a 2000lb bomb instead of the 500lb bomb that had been specified. The resulting blast obliterated the entire compound and left a large crater where a bunch of bushy-bearded thugs named Mohammed had once trod. What was funny was the resulting intercepted comms from the Taliban who surveyed the carnage the next day. Tbe Taliban were awed by the size of the crater and the fact the entire compound had been leveled.

I remember wondering why we did not routinely use much more powerful munitions and blow these guys to smithereens. It certainly got their attention! By the end of the tour, I had come to the realization that we were not in the war to win, and the efforts of every soldier who served and bled their were being wasted for the enrichment of defense contractors and politicians who left office after service to get cushy salaries working for those whom they had enriched while in office.

    • It we ever become better educated on the real issues that matter to us as a species and occupier of this planet there will be no wars forevermore.

For what it is worth Moon, thank you for your service, you believed that what you did at the time was right and for that, no one who has never been in that kind of situation should ever be critical of the warrior soldier who fights so others can sleep peacefully and safely in their beds.

    • I suspect that generals who ordered the attack with MOAB knew that about psychological effect…

    • Yes. The REAL traitors look and sound like us. I think some quote by Cicero made the case beautifully (enemy within the gates or similar…)

The “enemy” are simply doing what’s written on their tin. Easily identified and targeted and once the requisite will is in place, relatively easily sorted.

The betrayal will not be forgotten.

    • I have often thought the same thing myself. WW II was ended in 6 years. Why are we still fighting in Afghanistan?

  2. On the Melbourne Jewellery store robber; The current system of isolating young offenders (under the age of 18) and to treat them differently to older criminals does not work.

There is only one measure those who choose criminality as their path in life understand and respond to, and that is harsh treatment and punishment for their misdeeds. Anything less than being physically punished is treated as a joke by those the system should be impressing the most.

Once upon a time when a criminal came under police notice for serous crime such as armed robbery, rape, violent assault or murder, they knew what to expect if they didn’t talk and wanted to treat the system as a joke by wasting police time and the justice system’s treatment as a prisoner.

  3. “The big story of the day was the dropping of a Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb (MOAB, a.k.a. the “Mother of All Bombs”) by the U.S. Air Force in Afghanistan. The Afghan MOAB was the most powerful non-nuclear explosive ever detonated in combat. It was designed to destroy a vast tunnel complex set up by the Islamic State.”

Actually the GBU-43B 21,000 lb bomb was not the biggest ever, in turns of weight of conventional explosives. In World War 2 the British developed their monster “Grand Slam” bomb weighing 22,000 lb. These were dropped on 42 occasions in 1945 on massive structures like viaducts, U-boat pens etc. They would reach almost supersonic speed on decent and penetrate deeply into the ground creating an underground cavern the structure above would fall into. The RAF used their bomber workhorse the “Lancaster” to drop them (one per aircraft!) An American B17 couldn’t lift them, though a B29 could.

      • Hi Bill,

I used to know the physics of such things in the dim n distant but from vague memory it isn’t a dead gravity drop from a stationary position otherwise you’d be correct, to a point (a stationary drop from 200,000 feet for example would probably break the sound barrier). There are factors such as the kinetic energy at the point of release allied to a thinner medium at altitude….

Also, the definition of “supersonic” differs according to the Mach equation. The velocity of “supersonic” is different depending on the local speed of sound.

        And stuff….etc.

I’d be grateful for someone more knowledgeable to clarify please….

        • Yes, how was it possible? Must remember the bomb before release is not stationary, it id moving through the air at around 250 mph in the body of an aircraft. Then there is the design and shape. Here’s a small explanation from elsewhere;
“These massive bombs designed by Dr. Barnes Wallis reached the speed of sound during descent being streamlined and equipped with angled fins that produced a rapid spin. Penetrating the ground before exploding they worked by setting off shock waves that would bring down nearby structures.”

        • When falling without air resistance all things increase in speed about 9.8 meters per second. Recall how surprised the world was to discover that weight had nothing to do with this speed! In other words, after two seconds they are going 19.6 meters per second. And, after 10 seconds they are going around 100 meters per second…so that after about 30 seconds they are going approx 300 meters per second which is the speed of sound (340 meters/second) at sea level. But, this assumes no friction from the air. I have no idea what friction bombs have in air but I suppose that, if shaped like a needle, one could fall faster than the speed of sound.

      • Cross section and weight. Terminal velocity approaches speed of sound due to those factors.

        • In any case, it was a beautiful big bomb……

Good to see the Brits leading the way on that one.

    • Just a small correction if I may on the B 29. The B 29 Superfortress was designed with two separate bomb bays, fore and aft of the main wing spar, and their maximum payload was 20,000 lb generally of standard 500 lb bombs high explosive or with a mix of incendiary bombs.

To carry a single 22,000 lb Grand Slam bomb would have required major modifications to the frame of the aircraft that was not considered to be cost effective at such a late stage in the war.

And as a matter of interest, it appears that the Russians now have an even bigger bomb than the MOAB that they are now calling the Father of all Bombs!

As a further point of interest, my first job was at age 12 as a ‘paper boy’ delivering the morning newspapers. My boss at that time was Mr. Hyland – I cannot recall his first name – but such was the respect given to one’s elders at that time. He was an air force pilot during the war who flew for the RAF (Royal Air Force) flying Halifax four engine heavy bombers, similar to the Lancaster, but not able to carry the same bomb load, however, powerful enough to carry the 12,000 lb Tallboy (Father to Grand Slam) and I remember him telling me that he dropped one of two Tallboys that sank the Tirpitz (sister ship to the Bismark) during 1944 in Norway.

Funny how a subject and proceeding comments can bring back long forgotten memories.

  4. In the same way, the Israel situation could have been resolved very easily, but has been extended by constant foreign interventions supporting Palestinian/Islamist brainwashing and terrorism.

Supporting the Palestinian occupation of land legally mandated for Jewish residency in 1922 and not yet legally rescinded has allowed the terrorism introduced by Palestinians to go viral, worldwide, and sell huge amounts of weaponry and security consultancy/equipment.

Each truck that rams the innocent means huge profits for the guilty!

The revolving door as described by @moon above is indeed a major structural weakness of democracy and needs to be well-regulated by the militia in the future.

  5. “Muslims who migrate to Europe should understand that there are better places for them to live if they do not want to accept the European way of life German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said on Wednesday.”

Finally somebody says what should be said! Yay.

Muslims belong in muslim-land, IMO — they seem to have a hard time adapting to western ways of living. although I must add that we have plenty of them out here in the plains of America and as far as I know, they seem to be doing okay.

You can keep your culture, you just can’t impose it on other people. Of course, I think Europe has a problem with PC thinking which is unfortunate.

  6. Makes one wonder not only who funds the NGOs, and how that money flows, but also if there is a monies connection through the people smugglers.
    Paradox; Quite strange?

NGOs have been accused of helping migrant traffickers by going very close to the Libyan coast in response to migrant phone calls.
Leggeri said that in several cases Frontex had found that the smugglers had given migrants the phone numbers of NGOs.

Leggeri really does not get it? yeah right! Nudge, nudge; wink, wink.
Australia just simply returned the refugees/immigrants to the coast they set sail from.
The numbers that set out simply dried up, as it proved to be a waste of money paying people smugglers to try for Australia.

    • I refer to this total mess as the ‘refugee racket’ with handsome profits for all the NGO’S , the smugglers, the alleged religious charity groups, the corrupt EU political class, the Turkish border police, etc. Gee I hopre I did not leave any group out.
