The Can-Do Chancellor

Last year, at the height of the “refugee” crisis, German Chancellor Angela Merkel uttered her famous (or infamous) tagline about German policy on migration: “Wir schaffen das”, which may be variously translated as “We can do it,” “We can do that,” “We can handle that,” and similar phrases. The chancellor’s opponents have since used the line to mock her.

The makers of the following video have very cleverly edited together snips with Wir schaffen das and related remarks by Mrs. Merkel to make a little song. Many thanks to Nash Montana for the translation, and to Vlad Tepes for the subtitling:

Transcript (for what it’s worth):

0:04   We can do that, we have to do that,
0:07   but I am very convinced that we are doing that
0:10   TITLE: WE CAN DO THAT!
0:14   Just imagine first that we will do that, and then one can do that, and we can do that
0:18   With me together do that, you imagine once we can not do that that we can do that,
0:23   that would make no sense, because one can with a will do much much, and…
0:27   We can do that, do that, do that
0:30   We can do that, do that, do that — we can do that, do that, do that,
0:34   that lies within our power, but I also say that is a difficult task,
0:38   It is an extraordinary situation, a historic litmus test.
0:42   That it may last longer, for that we need a political majority,
0:46   We can do that, do that, do that — we can do that, do that, do that,
0:50   We can do that, do that, do that, and so that, yes we can do that,
0:55   and now all of us together, we can do that, do that, do that — we can do that, do that do that,
0:59   We can do that, do that do that — I… I have absolutely no doubt and, uh,
1:05   we are not just working on concentrating only on Germany, the Federation, States, in Berlin,
1:09   at the same time also, I mean, European allies, Austria, Sweden, Turkey,
1:14   In my opinion everybody has to carry his own responsibility,
1:18   about that one has to have a discussion, not just look away,
1:21   and then we will accomplish it that we will do that, and I don’t know either…
1:25   That is now a tough fight, takes nerves that’s not a question,
1:28   how is that supposed to end, yes, I have a plan, I have the confidence,
1:32   and have the optimism, that – that… can be done,
1:36   that it is always like that, that must (…), and that it isn’t always very easy,
1:41   we have just seen that, and one has to keep on working for that, but all can know
1:45   that I with all my power that I have work on that,
1:48   that this situation changes…
1:54   We can do that, do that, do that — we can do that, do that, do that,
1:58   We can do that, do that, do that, so yes that we will do,
2:02   now all of us together we can do that, do that, do that,
2:05   we can do that, do that, do that — we can do that do that do that,
2:09   and for that we still have to work very much.
2:12   We can do that, do that, do that — we can do that, do that, do that,
2:16   we can do that, do that, do that — as to that I have absolutely no doubt that we can’t handle it
2:21   we can do that, we can do that, we can do that,
2:25   so yes it works, I am not worried, I am very convinced that we can do that.
