Paul Weston Busted for Quoting Churchill

Paul Weston, the chairman of LibertyGB, was arrested today in Winchester for publicly quoting Winston Churchill’s famous description of Mohammedanism.

Below is Enza Ferreri’s report on the incident.

Winchester: Churchill Quotation Gets Liberty GB Leader Paul Weston Arrested

by Enza Ferreri

Today Paul Weston, chairman of the party Liberty GB and candidate in the 22 May European Elections in the South East, has been arrested in Winchester.

At around 2pm Mr Weston was standing on the steps of Winchester Guildhall, addressing the passers-by in the street with a megaphone. He quoted the following excerpt about Islam from the book The River War by Winston Churchill:

“How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property — either as a child, a wife, or a concubine — must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the faith: all know how to die but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith.”

Reportedly a woman came out of the Guildhall and asked Mr Weston if he had the authorisation to make this speech. When he answered that he didn’t, she told him “It’s disgusting!” and then called the police.

Six or seven officers arrived. They talked with the people standing nearby, asking questions about what had happened. The police had a long discussion with Mr Weston, lasting about 40 minutes.

At about 3pm he was arrested. They searched him, put him in a police van and took him away.

  1. If my memory serves me right, I remember him discussing this very form of protest more then a year ago on EDL radio.

  2. So the police were trolling for witnesses? That is the impression I get from that article if in fact the cops had spoken to ‘people standing nearby’.

Does anyone know if the act of discretion has been removed from the English police officer’s modus operandi? If it has not, then why have those officers pictured, chosen to arrest someone reciting a historical narrative, and not just an ordinary and common narrative, but a narrative recorded by one of Britain’ greatest?

Ordered to arrest? I wonder and by whom?

  3. The line is actually “…brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen”, which, in context, changes the meaning.

Amazing, who could imagine that anyone would arrested for quoting Churchill.

  4. Have also emailed Hampshire Constabulary for information on charges if made and Court date if applicable. What an injustice!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Received an email back informing me that Hampshire Constabulary are unable to provide any information regarding Paul Weston’s arrest because of data protection.

That’s funny! Members of the media can obtain those details so why not the public who will eventually be informed by the media?

  5. It’s time to join Liberty GB—I just did. Have been meaning to do so for a while but never got around to it. This reminded me!

It will be interesting to see what Paul Weston is charged with. With all the ravings and rantings that Choudary et al are allowed to get away with, there must be a double standard at work if Weston is charged for this. Or did he not have authorization to make his speech? However, the fact that the police discussed this with him for 40 minutes before charging him indicates that it was the content of his speech that was at issue. Britain, my homeland, I barely recognize you.

I’ve read The River Wars – Churchill was not politically correct in his writing, but called it as he saw it. This trait of his was what enabled him to lead the Allies to defeat Germany in WWII.

      • What a silly statement. How can Churchill be considered to be “not politically correct”. He was born and died before these Marxist thugs took power? This sort of “thinking” is dangerous. By saying he wasn’t “PC” alludes to the idea that authors from the past should have been. What next book burning?

    • Political Correctness is killing the west. Which is the intent of the fascist left.

  6. ” Six or seven officers arrived. They talked . . . and arrested . . .”
These are the names of the police who came to arrest THE REAL FREEDOM Fighter: Leninov, scherdibov, Mahamadov, Ahmadov, Hamidov, Khadijov. Just now I was reading about Walesa mentioning the Pope that changed the world. And of course he was referring to the Polish pope who supposedly brought down Communism.
Really? Is/ was communism that bad? Did communism import 7 million invaders to oppress their own indigenous people?
When the police of a country act like this: Does parliament, elections, votes, majority, minority, opposition party, … do they mean anything? If tomorrow there is an election and you tell the people don’t go and vote for traitors (aka politicians), they will look at you in surprise and say, “we are exercising our right. And they will walk pompously to the polling stations as if they are a unique people who have something called democracy, which the majority of the world can’t understand, apply and get all the fruits emanating from it.

    • You better learn some history about Communism!
No, the Communists didn’t import 7 million people to oppress their own indigenous people, they were very well capable of doing that on their own!
They invaded shitloads of sovereign countries, killed estimated 2.4 to 7.5 million people alone in the Ukraine in 1 fucking winter! They put millions into Gulags and killed around 100 million people on the whole.
Maybe you have a short look here:

  7. This is absolutely ridiculous. The UK has become an undemocratic, fascist, police state…

  8. “The Special Rapporteur also reiterates his concern in relation to
anti-blasphemy laws, which are inherently vague and leave the entire concept open
to abuse. He wishes to underscore once again that international human rights law protects individuals and not abstract concepts such as religion, belief systems or
institutions, as also affirmed by the Human Rights Committee (CCPR/C/GC/34,
para. 48). Moreover, the right to freedom of religion or belief, as enshrined in
relevant international legal standards, does not include the right to have a religion or
belief that is free from criticism or ridicule. Indeed, the right to freedom of
expression includes the right to scrutinize, debate openly, make statements that
offend, shock and disturb, and criticize belief systems, opinions and institutions,
including religious ones …” (La Rue, F. Report of the Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression, A/67/357, United Nations General Assembly, 67th Session, 7 September 2012.)

  9. It’s important to keep doing this…embarrassing, attacking, quoting, arguing, reasoning. We need to bring love into Islam. And we are creating more apostates year by year. People do change. Note our feelings about LGBT and the environmental movement and abortion and health care, etc. ad infinitum. The social brain is always changing and can learn.

  10. “Note our feelings about LGBT and the environmental movement and abortion and health care, etc. ad infinitum. The social brain is always changing and can learn.”

Yes we should. ‘Our’ feelings of course will differ and I’ll put mine here to encourage other liberals who are concerned about islam.

LGBT – no problem to me.

the environmental movement – depends on specific issues – I’d study up on each one before supporting or rejecting.

abortion – woman’s body, woman’s (very difficult) decision. However, the more education and contraception is available, and the more good adoption options there are if a woman does want to have the child but not keep it, the better.

health care – public health care has always worked for me. But it can’t go to large numbers of immigrants until decent tax contributions have been made. Until then, immigrants should have jobs (needed by the country) and private insurance.

And the main topic: islam – a misogynistic, homophobic, antisemitic, totalitarian ideology.

    • Hear, hear. Calling Islam like you see it need not (and should not) be confined to “conservatives.”

    • “And the main topic: islam – a misogynistic, homophobic, antisemitic, totalitarian ideology.”
And please, ask this specific group about allowing LGBT rights, women’s rights, freedom to practice religion, or free speech. As evolved as some people like to think they are when it comes to just these topics, those who follow Islam will never evolve–or at least they have shown they have not had the aptitude or desire to change in the past 1500 years.

    • I think your concern about Islam will snowball among liberals worldwide as they get a true look at the implications of generous tolerance of the Ummah, its traditions and its aspirations of conquest and domination of the West.
Their aspirations are truly destructive, and if you believe in diversity, then you will defend it from people who want to destroy it, the people who say that you will submit, be humiliated, or die.
The only protection diversity has is diversity itself.
Defend it by subjecting the Ummah to something they’ve only known once before, a Western Reconquista.

    • LGBT, abortion, environmental movement… how many of those on the “liberal’ side of those issues are that way inclined, because it’s a reaction against the “conservative” mentality of their country, parents, elders etc? If it’s a large proportion, your appeal to other liberals may fall on deaf ears – no matter how much you try to appease them. see the San Francisco authorities bowing down to Islam, in spite (or maybe because of?) the large community in their city.

  11. You think this is bad? One of my priests was “investigated” for quoting the Bible in his own Church.

      • Britain is reaping the fruites of political correctness. It´s funny not one politician in the UK speaks out to to throw out the muslims and Eastern Europeans. Everything in that country is regulated to a point where there is no initiativ left. Most people in britain has become so civilized it borders to a robotlike passivness.
Their politicians and royals are arrogant and snobby and yet the commen man likes them. The plan has worked. Britain = Brave new World.

  12. Paul should also have held up a copy of the Koran and stated – “As long as there is this book there will never be peace in the world.” Then the words of Gladstone could have been read out in court in addition to the words of Churchill. Or perhaps Paul could save that one for the trial… if there is one, that is. They’ll probably try to quietly drop it when they realise how thoroughly, thoroughly stupid this is making them look.

  13. The arrest of Paul Weston is nothing short of totalitarianism. I will not coment further until I hear the charges.

  14. I was born in Hampshire, I grew up in Hampshire and I fled from Hampshire to Israel.

I don’t suppose for a moment that the Hampshire plods recognized that PW was quoting from Churchill, I strongly suspect that they have been ordered to ‘get’ Weston, and they did, in total ignorance, and hopefully, it will explode in their faces.

I wonder if he had been quoting from Merchant of Venice he would have been arrested, or maybe Macbeth:- “Liver of blaspheming Jew”.

Are we now going to see similar arrests at every performance of Henry the First, Part Two , The Two Gentlemen of Verona ,The Merchant of Venice, Anthony and Cleopatra, Much Ado about Nothing , Macbeth and The Merry Wives of Windsor?

Somehow I doubt it, for Islam is a ‘special’ case, they get ‘peaceful’ if provoked…..

When doggy doo-doos was smeared on the doors of my car, Hampshire police assured me it was not a racially motivated attack, as they would know one when they saw it.

    So it appears…..

    • Agree, the police officers were probably ignorant of the meaning of the Churchill quote and only acted on denunciation and finger pointing, however if there is to be a prosecution the CPS will harden up the charge and retrospectively put it into a politically correct context.

    • No joke – I’ve seen PC productions of the Magic Flute – Monastatos is no longer black and his aria has been changed to longer refer to it! So if Mozart can be slaughtered for PC, so can Shakespeare!

But the ‘sexist’ arias about Pamina etc are all still there – why not change those too?

Hey, all the characters in all plays and operas could be the same and only play nice – then there would be no insults between them and everyone would be happy 🙂 xxx oo xxx

  15. Perhaps the lady who took the trouble to call the police was not aware that the passage Paul Weston was quoting was made by a man voted the “greatest Briton of all time”. Or perhaps she was… after all, Churchill”s era occurred before the all-knowing lefties could enlighten Britain as to the dangers of “waycism”… And as we all know, everyone before this time could be liable to being a “waycist”, and an “ignorant bigot”, making their opinions worthless…

So, how can the great and the good of Britain allow Churchill to be used as a source for the Correct view on Islam, when today there is such a wide array of “fair and balanced” experts on the topic who could have been quoted instead – such as Karen Armstrong, Tariq Ramadan or Fiyaz Mughal? Hence Churchil must be forgotten – and anyone quoting him must go to jail, for this especially dangerous thought crime!

  16. Quote:
Reportedly a woman came out of the Guildhall and asked Mr Weston if he had the authorisation to make this speech. When he answered that he didn’t, she told him “It’s disgusting!” and then called the police.

“Authorisation” is not a democratic concept.
    So much for British “democracy.”
    And as for “it’s disgusting!”
    It’s the truth.
Shove your indignation somewhere, preferably dark and ugly.

  17. I think Churchill’s words should be read aloud in the streets of every community in Britain once a week for the remainder of time.
His analysis of Afghan tribal culture in The Malakand Field Force should also be required reading.
The English lost, and lost and lost to these people, and now they’ve decided to lose on their own ground.
Let them hear the price of loss in a conflict with modern, militant, punkish, nihilistic Islam, the price Buddhists of Afghanistan and Pakistan paid so many years before.

    • The ‘English’ as in the English people have decided nothing at this time. The political decisions are still left to the ‘elites’ who are slowly delivering Britain to its colonizers. It has taken decades via stealth and cunning means to get Britain to the stage of political blindness that is so very evident to those of us who can recognize our enemies, it may take a little longer in time before the English people decide en-masse that they have had enough, but that time will come!

  18. This is not the first time.

Norman Scarth also a prospective MP was attacked and criminalised by the police for canvasing.

The crown thug police have a track record in interfering before elections. Little old ladies have been criminalised for distributing leaflets advising the electorate of the abortion views of their candidates. BNP candidates have had their front doors broken down and have been arrested.

  19. He spent several hours in a cell at Winchester Police Station, after which the original charge of breaching a Section 27 Dispersal Notice was dropped and Mr Weston was “re-arrested” for a Racially Aggravated Crime, under Section 4 of the Public Order Act, which carries a potential prison sentence of 2 years.

    Public Order Act 1986
4 Fear or provocation of violence.
    (1) A person is guilty of an offence if he—
    (a) uses towards another person threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour, or
    (b) distributes or displays to another person any writing, sign or other visible representation which is threatening, abusive or insulting,
with intent to cause that person to believe that immediate unlawful violence will be used against him or another by any person, or to provoke the immediate use of unlawful violence by that person or another, or whereby that person is likely to believe that such violence will be used or it is likely that such violence will be provoked.

A vital component of this offence is the intent to cause belief of “immediate unlawful violence”. There was absolutely no question of such a belief anywhere near Paul Weston. The police are wasting public funds.

    • Yes that is correct. The proof of the offence is in the apprehension or likelihood of violence being committed as a matter of course. There was none of that coming from Mr Weston’s mouth.

The establishment charge because they can and they use the arresting and charging process as a deterrent, not only for those newly arrested, but also for others who may decide that they too have had enough of the Marxist/Islamist crap and choose to speak out publicly about it. What those idiots who do the establishments bidding do not realize is that by denying individuals or groups their freedom of expression then leaves open only one course for redress!

  20. You better watch what you say about Islam in Merry Ole Christian England.

  21. The man is free to quote whomever & speak his mind – even if you don’t like what he says. For police to step in on this is moronic. Britain needs to wake up & stop this.

  22. The British police has become the Mutaween, arresting people for blasphemy and “moral” infractions. But then again, after years of being unarmed and emasculated, they only know how to take on safe targets.

    • Then they should be called “Mutaween” to their faces.
If they’re acting as Mutaween, then they are not acting as enforcers of English law.
      They enforce the Sharia instead.
      As is obvious here.
