Down and Out

As readers may have noticed, we’ve been experiencing problems here at Gates of Vienna. The site database had to be taken down twice in the middle of the night (early- to mid-morning European time). The issues have been at least temporarily resolved, and we’re back on the road again.

There seem to have been several issues on the server. It’s possible, but not definite, that one or more DoS attacks were involved. We just don’t know.

If anything interesting turns up later, we’ll report it here — assuming that the wheels are on and the engine is ticking over when the time comes.

  1. Yes I noticed and right now I can get to your site but can not go to “continue….” or get to “comments” and since I have just got thru and decided I will leave a message before trying your other posts again.

Thanks for your ceaseless work but do take time for yourselves to take care, refresh and to enjoy little moments for your selves, so that you can remain effective for a long time.

    • the “buddhist” post does not go thru continue or comment but struck gold getting thru to the newsfeed and it does work thru the summary and also I can go to the sites I click on.
Ignore me if I am not helpful or just wasting your time as you beaver away.
Well I must away to work now. Steady as it goes with these computer systems.

      • Thanks, that’s definately helpful!

I’ve been assisting in tuning and cleaning up from what is largely a server capacity problem – but in that, we did some elimination of database garbage. It looks like real posts took damage, too.

We’ll look at later (and yes, there is a full backup 🙂

  2. We are very grateful to Henrik for his expertise. He might deny it is “expert” but the Baron’s eyes will not permit him to investigate this with any facility.

We knew when we left the safety of Blooger’s acres and acres of server farms to dwell here in the cold cruel world we would be preyed upon on occasion. Since Henrik and the Baron are assiduous in keeping full backups there is a limit to the lasting damage they can do. But in the short run, these attacks are annoying.

They are meant to damage our spirits, to make us grow discouraged. It won’t work. However, in the long run we may be faced with the expense of a gated community – so to speak. That would be better than the prospect of having the Baron up at three am trying to get things going again…

  3. Yes, indeed, please take care of yourselves first. Take heart that there are many in the seemingly silent majority that support your “assiduous” efforts.

  4. Works fine on Firefox, but I’m getting a redirect error on my chosen browser, Chrome.
