Diana West: The Mightier Pen

Diana West has just been honored by the Center for Security Policy with the 2013 “Mightier Pen” award. Below is the press release sent out today by CSP.

Center to Honor Syndicated Columnist and Author Diana West as 2013 Recipient of the Mightier Pen Award

Washington, D.C., September 12, 2013: The Center for Security Policy announced today that the 2013 recipient of its Mightier Pen Award will be Diana West, a nationally syndicated columnist and author of The Death of the Grown-up: How America’s Arrested Development Is Bringing Down Western Civilization, co-author of Shariah: The Threat to America, and most recently author of American Betrayal: The Secret Assault on Our Nation’s Character. The award will be presented at a luncheon on November 20th at the Union League Club in New York City.

Diana West’s weekly newspaper column is syndicated by Universal Uclick, and appears in over 100 publications nationwide, as well as at her website www.dianawest.net. West also serves as Washington correspondent for the European weekly newspaper Dispatch International. Her work has appeared in many publications including The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Times, The New Criterion, The Public Interest, Women’s Quarterly, The Weekly Standard, and The Washington Post Magazine; her fiction has appeared in Atlantic Monthly. She has made numerous radio appearances and as a former CNN contributor, she made frequent television appearances on the former CNN show, “Lou Dobbs Tonight.” She was recently featured in the Glenn Beck TV documentaries “The Project” and “Rumors of War III.”

Ms. West joins an illustrious group of authors, journalists and essayists who have received this recognition for their commitment to a robust national security and their efforts to educate our countrymen and women about the need to practice the philosophy President Reagan called “peace through strength.” Previous recipients include: Mark Helprin, Charles Krauthammer, Roger Ailes, William F. Buckley, Jr., A.M. Rosenthal, Andrew C. McCarthy, Norman Podhoretz, Claudia Rosett, and Monica Crowley.

In announcing this recognition, Frank J. Gaffney, Jr., President and CEO of the Center for Security Policy, observed:

“Diana West is among America’s most thoughtful and intellectually invigorating writers of our time. Her efforts to illuminate the contemporary threats to our society and culture — and to map out their historical antecedents and the appropriate responses to them — in order to preserve our freedoms, Constitution and nation are exemplary. We take great pride in bestowing this recognition on a cherished friend and admired colleague.”

  1. Viking Congratulations to Ms West!

The other day, I took a little closer look at Frontpage Magazine and Mr Horowitz’ “Diana West Invents a New Conspiracy”.

At that time, there were 453 comments on the thread, and I did some counting. 44 bloggers were pro-West, and 21 pro-Radosh/Horowitz. David Horowitz had sent 23 posts, pro-West Texas Patrot 28 posts, pro-R/H truebearing 23 posts and pro-R/H ziggy zoggy 84 posts.

Below a few posts of my own choice (Not necessarily in chronological order but in the order they appeared on the thread.):

Texas Patriot: One of the posters above suggested that Ms West should be given the opportunity to appear on this site and debate with Mr Horowitz one on one with no interference from anyone else. I think that is a good idea.

DH: What are you brain dead? I gave her that opportunity she rejected it and called me a liar for referring to it.

(Ms West’s explanation was available at GoV at an early stage of the “debate”.)
    ———-
isntlam: I hope you are happy, DH et al, with the way you’ve objected to Diana West’s new book. But you won’t be receiving any more donations from me. Your behavior is disrespectful, dishonorable and unkind.
    ———-
Texas Patriot: (Answering Jed West. The last two lines of the post.) Long may she live, well may she prosper, and always happy, safe and secure may she be for all the rest of her days.

Texas Patriot: (Shortly afterwards. Again to Jed West.) Some people are born for greatness, and I think your sister is one of them.
    ———-
isntlam: “I have’nt the foggiest idea who this Lopez woman is,”
“I am not familiar with Gatestone.”

Next you’ll be telling us you don’t know who John Bolton is.
    ———–
(The next two extractions are at GoV in their whole.)

Texas Patriot: Give it up, David. ——–

DH: You, sir, are an ass. ——-

PAUL WESTON: I don’t know enough in-depth details about this, but one thing I do know is that we on the “right” have far too many enemies on the left to allow us to sink into personal infighting and accusations. I admire both David Horowitz AND Diana West, and ask that this unseemly and weakening arguing is dropped ASAP.

There is still one thing disturbing me. When I adressed DH at GoV and wrote “Your greatest mistake was to fire Clare M. Lopez”, I was perfectly aware of that DH OUGHT not to have any influence whatsoever on the board of Gatestone Institute.

Only a statement from John R. Bolton can put light on what happened. If I were JRB, I would give an apology, and immidiately reinstall Clare M. Lopez as a “Supreme Distinguished Senior Fellow” at Gatestone Institute.

  2. The Good Guys in this imbroglio have turned out to be: Frank Gaffney, Ruth King, Gates of Vienna, Andrew Bostom; and that’s about it (I don’t count because my blog is too tiny to be counted, though all my 3.5 readers may protest). The others who do count who have chosen to be silent are being no less shameful than when anyone remains silent in the face of injustice.

And by the way, Horowitz has quite a racket going with frontpage: even Mark Tapson, who wrote the famous glowing review of Diana West’s review which, when summarily and immediately yanked by Horowitz to make way for the Radosh hatchet job (using his ax ass-backwards to boot), kicked off this whole mess, is still publishing stuff on frontpage and breathing not a word about West. Many others who likely support West continue to support frontpage. What needs to be done in a situation like this is to round the wagons and confront Horowitz with an Intervention. Just like an addict or alcoholic, he needs to have his friends and supporters sit him down and tell him that business as usual is suspended until we “talk this all out”.

But, of course, this won’t happen. And the West Affair will get buried and Horowitz will win, because no one wants to rock the boat.

      • Yes, my little list neglected to mention many individuals who reviewed the controversy in a fair and reasonable way; Diana West published an article about every one of them over the past month, and they amount to quite a few. I was just thinking of the bigger blogs in the Counter-Jihad (it’s likely that the 1389 Counter-Jihad blog weighed in on the right side as well; I haven’t checked yet) — both the few who did their duty, and those who have not done their duty in this regard.

  3. Correction: “…Mark Tapson, who wrote the famous glowing review of Diana West’s review…”

That second “review” of course should be “book”.
