Like many other interactive forums on the web, Twitter seems to encourage a nastiness of discourse which would rarely be encountered during in-person exchanges between people who disagree with one another. Sweden is no exception to this trend, and tweets in Swedish can be as nasty as any in English. In the following example a leftist monopolizes all the nastiness, as is often the case.
Erik Svensson is a professor of biology at the University of Lund who calls himself a “Marxist” on his Twitter account. On Friday he exchanged a series of tweets with Ingrid Carlqvist of Dispatch International, and the conversation was a notably vitriolic one on his part. Actually, “vitriol” fails to do justice to the level of bile that emerged from Dr. Svensson’s keyboard when confronted by an Islam-critic and — gasp! — Christian.
Below are excerpts about Erik Svensson’s Twitter love-fest with Ingrid Carlqvist from Avpixlat. Many thanks to our Swedish correspondent LN for the translation:

If Islam is so superior, why doesn’t he go live in a country that’s steeped in Islam instead of remaining in one that still has vestiges of its Christian cultural foundations? Somehow I doubt he would like any of those places very much.
Does he not know that charity toward the poor is deeply embedded in Christianity, but it’s done in a voluntary spirit rather than the rule-bound manner of Islam? Does he not know that Islamic charity is focused only on other Muslims? Or that Muslims are commanded to support jihad warfare as part of their “charity”?
Well, let’s be glad he’s teaching biology instead of history or religion.

It’s always weird to notice this level of uncouthness and unreason in a seemingly normal person. It’s hard to explain for these are usually well bred and civilized speakers who pride themselves on their flawlessly humane standing. Since I am Swedish (Not my fault!), I followed your link to Fria Tider (Free Times). This net journal is regarded as “extremely right wing and islamophobic” (Recognize the spit?). Telling the truth may also place you as a “communist” or a “fascist” – totally depending on which topic it’s all about.

There was a debate recently here in the states about gun control and what a female could do to ward off a sexual attack without a deadly weapon. One of the pro-gun control advocates suggested that a female could “wet her pants” to ward off an attack (I am not making this up)!

I am beginning to wonder if these people are indeed weak little men who would get a pasting in the school yard and have now discovered the ideal means of keeping real men down and in chains. I think that you reasonably expected good faith, and that your leaders would represent the interests of their respective nations. It’s really not too much to ask– that policy be made on the grounds of enlightened self-interest and an awareness of history.

I have returned to this website, about 6 months after this ridiculous “affair”, which would never have become any affair at all, if it were not for the right-wing extremists and fascists around Ingrid Carlqvist (“Dispatch International”, “Exponerat”, “Fria Tider” and this blog) and their campaign against me and my right to excercise free speech, as any other Swedish citizen.
I, like any other Swedish citizen, have the right to express my political opinion outside my work, including on blogs, Twitter, Facebook and other social media. It is simply not a matter for my employer (Lund University) what I say, or how I express myself, outside my work. The campaign from the fascists and right-wing extremists is actually a campaign against free speech, including the campaign from this far-right blog.
