Gates of Vienna News Feed 3/27/2013

The new Muslim Brotherhood government in Egypt seems to be bad news for international investors. Moody’s has cut Egypt’s credit rating again, estimating that there is a 40% chance that the country will default on its debts within five years.

In other Egyptian news, dozens of student protesters were injured in a clash with security police, who forcibly ended their sit-in at a university in Cairo.

Don’t Wake Up In a Roadside Ditch

Who would have thought finding an eye patch to wear with glasses would prove so daunting a task?

But that has indeed been the case: all the kinds of eye patches we’ve looked at either don’t fit, or they don’t lie flat on the Baron’s eye so that his glasses can perch as usual, allowing him the use of his one good eye.

Besides the eye patch, another remedy is the occasional extra glass of red wine in the evening. Oh, and practicing how to wait patiently. How does one achieve ‘patience’ in the face of what becomes terror if we dwell on it? Be darned if I know, but I’ll tell you what we’re learning…

This is about waiting to know what the future will be, right? Waiting to see if the judge commutes your sentence. Waiting to see if you pass the tax audit. Waiting for… well, feel free to add your own experience of terror.

[I had two of them: waiting to see if my cancer would recur — it didn’t — and an interminable car ride to my daughter’s house to see if the medics had revived her. They had left for town with her body by the time we arrived on the scene but partway there I already knew at some level that she was gone and out of reach so the terror was replaced with numbness.]

Feel free to add you own experiences with terror, with the pacing-waiting-praying-bargaining dance.

There is one partial answer to all the angst, and that’s humor. The sillier the better. Even gallows humor is fine.

For example: I was in the kitchen today preparing dinner and the Baron was at the table making one of his eye patches prior to going up to his office. After taping the thing on, he came over and put his arm around me. He said in a solemn voice, “Pardon me, ma’am, do you know the way to the Kingdom of the Blind?” Without missing a beat I responded, “Why? Are you planning on ascending the throne?” Yeah, I stepped on his line there, but he was pleased I’d gotten the reference. As in, “would you rather be funny or be understood?” And that’s how we’re surviving the wait — and the weight — of this terror.

Meanwhile, last week the Lurker in Tulsa sent a great video, just what we needed. I’ve watched it several times — if you have a TV you’ve probably seen it already. It still makes me laugh, as it obviously does others, too. I think it has about a million and a half views:

Out and About

I spent most of today away from home, trying to chase down a pirate patch for my left eye and doing other ocular-related activities.

Do you know how hard it is to find an old-fashioned eyepatch? Even the medical supply place in town didn’t have any. I am now working via the Internet, with the best bet being an accessory that attaches to the lens of my glasses.

I also had to get a prescription for new eyeglasses and take it to the optician’s. This set is only temporary — presumably, when my condition settles down into whatever the new “normal” will be, I’ll be getting another pair of specs, with a prescription for the left eye that is very different from the right.

Because of all this extracurricular activity, posting has been light today. I’m working on a major report, but can’t possibly finish it before tomorrow.

There will be a story in tonight’s news feed about an elementary school in Alabama that has banned the use of the word “Easter” in school. The kids can have a “bunny”, and “eggs”, and “baskets”, and so on, but the faculty and staff can’t precede any of those words with the dreaded E-word. The rationale for the decision is that the school wants to “honor religious diversity”.

If there were such a thing as “Ramadan eggs”, I bet those would be OK…

It’s now become clear why those batteries of Patriot missiles were sent to Turkey — since they’re no good for their ostensible purpose, which was to defend against mortar attacks by the Assad regime. Turkey has now requested that NATO use the Patriots to shoot down any Syrian government warplanes that attack the Western-backed mujahideen rebels in Syria.

In other news, a severe cold snap has hit northeastern Italy, with heavy snow and ice causing a winter emergency in Trieste and the surrounding region.

Immigration Will Save Sweden

That’s what Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt says. You see, with Swedes living so much longer and having so many fewer children, there will not be enough young people to work hard and pay taxes in order to support all those future geezers.

The solution? More immigrants!

That’s right: the new Swedes will come into the country, refuse to learn Swedish, set fire to the schools, and throw stones at the fire brigade. All while living off welfare and not paying any taxes.

Under this brilliant plan, in twenty years’ time, Sweden will… well, there will be… hmm. Ahem. Harrumph. Well, yes, we agree; there are some details yet to be ironed out.

But still, you have to admit: it’s a great idea!

Hat tip: Kitman.

The Effendi

Our Israeli correspondent MC presents some historical background on the decades preceding the creation of the State of Israel, focusing on the Balfour Declaration, the British Mandate, and Grand Mufti Haj Amin al-Husseini.

The Effendi
by MC

The tie-up between the Fatah/PLO/PA factions and the Nazi party is a moderately well-known historical fact, but one would never get the likes of Unite Against Fascism or CAIR to accept it.

Haj Amin al-Husseini was a scion of one of the four Ottoman ‘Effendi Families’ that effectively ruled the Ottoman province of Southern Syria in which the current Israel, Judea and Samaria (West Bank) lie.

These families were absentee landlord families. They ruled over the peasants of the area, lending them money against future crops at high interest, causing untold poverty and hardship to ‘Palestinian’ families.

As Jewish agencies became interested in buying land in ‘Palestine’ from about 1880 onwards, it was these Effendi Families from whom they bought it. The land sold was useless swampland (if you are a lazy rich parasitic landowner) and these families were only too happy to sell.

But the Jewish agencies were buying the water rather than the land, and with the herculean efforts of the early (mainly Russian) Jewish immigrants (the much maligned ‘Zionists’ ) the swamps were drained and the land put under irrigation and reclaimed, so that the desert bloomed.

Then came 1917. The British had declared a Jewish Homeland in the Balfour Declaration comprising what is now Israel, Jordan, Gaza and the ‘West Bank’. But now they had second thoughts.

The League of Nations mandated Britain to create a Jewish Homeland, but Britain decided to do something else and immediately gave about 80% of the land (now Jordan) to a Saudi princeling in the hope of securing the oil revenues. Unfortunately, they chose the Hashemite clan, and it was the Bin Sauds who held the oil.

The Politics of Personal Destruction, Danish Style

The following story concerns a particularly virulent case of the Screaming Nazi Heeber-Jeebers, an outbreak that infected the whole of the Danish political class back in 2003. It forced Henrik Gade Jensen, an assistant to a government minister, to resign his position after completely bogus charges of “Nazi” connections had been leveled at him in the media.

Now, ten years later, he has been totally vindicated in a Danish television documentary. It may have come too late for him to salvage his career — nobody who is branded a “Nazi” ever really recovers fully, no matter how spurious the allegations — but he has at least seen his name cleared in public.

We “right-wing extremists” are all too familiar with these media smear tactics. All it takes is one whisper of the “N-word” in a major organ of the left-wing press, and the career of the accused is essentially over. Any provision of evidence for the accusation is totally optional — dedicated leftists generally find the facts to be an impediment when they go Nazi-hunting.

Our Danish correspondent TB undertook the enormous task of translating the documentary, and has written an introduction that places the incident in its full context.

Henrik Gade Jensen: How to destroy a decent man in a modern multicultural society

by TB

It’s been only six weeks since the ‘postman’ tried to kill Lars Hedegaard on his doorstep. Apparently that’s no reason for the media to stop their witch hunt, and a few days ago they succeeded in assassinating Lars Hedegaard’s character. Hedegaard was lured into a TV studio under false pretences by this invitation from the journalist Martin Krasjnik:

“I don’t believe we have met each other, but I have followed you painstakingly since the Muhammed crisis. I am a great admirer of your persistence and your courage to speak your mind! It gives me unbelievable pleasure that you survived the cowardly, dreadful attack on your life and I am constantly amazed by the widespread failure to support you clearly and explicitly. It would be absolutely terrific and interesting to have you on the program for a long interview.” [Source: Front Page Magazine]

Once in the studio, Lars was viciously attacked, bombarded with accusations of all kinds, and had his book about Islam (The House of War: Islam’s Colonization of the West) compared to the The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Lars was verbally assassinated during that half hour. No mercy. The interviewer Krasjnik even used lies and the ‘guilt by association’ trick to make all his false allegations fit his murderous set-up. It was utterly disgusting. But not a surprise.

During that half hour the journalist also tried to single out Lars as an ‘isolated loonie’ by using comments from other important Islam-critics taken out of contest. One of the critics used by Krasjnik to back up his smear campaign was Bruce Bawer. Bawer addresses Krasjnik’s lies perfectly in the above-linked article, exposing his tactics.

In any case, this tactic is not new. And in hindsight one could argue that Lars should have known better than to fall for Krasjnik’s Gollum-like smarmy small talk as quoted in the invitation above. Several people before him has been ‘assassinated’ in this manner by the left-wing extremists and the media collaborators. He should have seen that one coming (easy for me to say isn’t it?). But, as I indicated before, these tactics are not new. And I think that it is now very important that people understand this, and stop exposing themselves.

The enemies of freedom will use ‘whatever it takes’. No matter the cost. What is important to them is not the case, whether they are right or wrong. What is important to them is to destroy the people with whom they do not agree. If my mother had ever tried to warn me against this kind of behavior, I would have told her to take a break — people simply do not do things like this. They cannot possibly be that evil. But they can. They are.

The video below is not about Lars Hedegaard, but has a lot of similarities to Hedegaard’s case. It takes about forty minutes to watch. It is about one of the finest debaters we have in Denmark, the philosopher Henrik Gade Jensen. Gade served as a press advisor to the former Minister of Ecclesiastical Affairs in Denmark.

A bus driver has caused a scandal in Sweden by allegedly dividing up passengers bound for buses according to their race, placing “brown” people on a different bus from native Swedes. The driver will be called to account by his employer, and asked to explain his “apartheid” actions.

In other news, a newly-released report suggests that Slovenia will be the next Eurozone country to require a bailout. According to the report, major Slovenian banks are awash in toxic debt.

A Daily Double From Germany

The following articles from Junge Freiheit form a yin-yang pair bracketing the state of Modern Multicultural Germany.

JLH, who translated both pieces, offers the following commentary:

Here are two short articles by way of Junge Freiheit which — to me at least — form an ironic counterpoint. We have a youth court judge who obviously learned nothing from Heisig’s experimenting with swift and pointed sentencing.

Then, with the image of this thug being smiled out of the courtroom by the judge still in our minds, we encounter the Turkish protest against the everyday racism in Germany, benevolently covered by a couple of online news services.

It makes you wonder whether the world is being run by Alice’s caterpillar.

The first article from Junge Freiheit concerns (among other things) a case of mistaken identity — the Turkish criminal beat up a fellow enricher, thinking he was a German:

“I Thought You Were a German”

Garbsen: The leader of a criminal gang, Mohammed K. has been sentenced to two years’ probation by the court in Neustadt. He was accused of 22 criminal acts in thirteen indictments, among them arson, bodily injury, theft, threatening and hit-and-run. The damages to the Caroline Herschel School alone, to which he set fire, amount to €300,000, reports BILD magazine.

He did “stupid things,” says the 21 year-old to youth judge Pamela Ziehn. Ziehn praised the behavior of the perpetrator, who has been known to the police since he was eleven: “in three and one-half months in detention [awaiting trial], you have made a very good impression. It also made a positive impression on us that, on the day of the hearing, after the handcuffs had been removed, you gave a friendly ‘Good morning.’”

Loud Celebration in the Courtroom

Among other things, Mohammed K. was accused, along with three accomplices, of beating a man up. In the meantime, in a one-on-one talk — according to the Hannoversche Allegemeine newspaper — Mohammed L. had apologized, saying: “I thought you were a German.” Another case of bodily injury and the arson were not considered for lack of evidence.

When the sentence was announced, an extended roar erupted from his friends present in the courtroom. “When you go drinking with your friends, don’t drink so much, so you don’t backslide,” the youth judge cautioned Mohammed K. who was able to leave the court a free man. He promised to go back to his girl friend in Kiel and begin a new life.

“I am grateful that you are giving me a second chance,” said Mohammed K. following the sentencing. He must now carry out 120 hours of community service and find addiction counseling.

For counterpoint, the second article from Junge Freiheit:

Changing Swedish Attitudes Towards Immigration, Part 2

The segment below is the second of two parts of an in-depth report on immigration from Swedish television. It’s fascinating to hear the immigrants themselves describe their refusal to integrate into Swedish society, as well as their cynical, deliberate, and successful efforts to scam the “Swedish for immigrants” language course.

Many thanks to The Observer for the translation, and to Vlad Tepes for the subtitling:
