Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, known in the media as the “Underwear Bomber”, to this blog as the “Lap Bomber”, and to Vlad as the “Thong Bomber”, has been sentenced in a Detroit courtroom to life in prison for attempting to blow up an airliner on Christmas Day 2009 with a bomb in his underwear. Mr. Abdulmutallab, a Nigerian national, showed no emotion when the sentence was handed down. He is expected to serve his sentence in a “Supermax” facility.
In other news, the Serbs of northern Kosovo voted overwhelmingly in a referendum to reject the sovereign authority of the Kosovo government, which they do not recognize. The referendum is not binding, and has no official standing, but simply reflects the mass discontent of Serbs in Kosovo.
