The big news of the day is the 8.9 earthquake that struck almost 24 hours ago off the northeastern coast of Honshu Island in Japan. The death toll is currently estimated to be over a thousand, and may go higher. A massive tsunami, more than ten meters high in some locations, followed the earthquake, and did substantial damage far inland on Honshu, as well as in the Kuril Islands off the coast of Russia.
The tsunami traveled all the way across the Pacific, and an eight-foot surge hit parts of the Oregon coast. Several people were swept out to sea when the tsunami arrived, and one is still missing.
In other news, two culturally-enriched high school girls in Brooklyn fell out over an older man from Staten Island in whom both were interested, and one of them attempted to blind the other by throwing acid in her face. The victim was fortunate not to be seriously injured. The incident may have a measurable Mohammed coefficient, since the object of the two girls’ affection is said to be named Mohammed.
