ESW at Trykkefrihedsselskabet

Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff spoke yesterday at a conference sponsored by IFPS at Trykkefrihedsselskabet (the Danish Free Press Society) in Copenhagen.

Below is a video recording of her speech, followed by a very interesting question and answer session. One of the more intriguing questions is raised by the Dutch author Arthur Legger, who suggests that it is time for an international pooling of legal talent — a Europe-wide consortium of lawyers — to fight the EU’s “hate speech” laws.

Many thanks to Vlad Tepes for uploading this video. The sound is a bit peculiar, because it has been adjusted to filter out the background noise. Vlad says he is working to improve it:

The text of Elisabeth’s speech is here. The video above departs only slightly from the prepared text, but the Q&A is obviously not included at all.

Switzerland Takes the Lead Again

This time last year the Swiss pulled out ahead of the rest of Western Europe when they voted in favor of a ban on the building of new minarets. They followed it up today by approving a referendum that would force the deportation of all foreigners convicted of serious criminal offenses.

The oligarchy which runs Switzerland — like the oligarchies that administer all Western countries — was desperate to stop this initiative. They tried to lure voters into supporting a watered-down version, which would have recommended deportation, but left the final decision up to judges, who would evaluate each individual case on the merits.

Swiss voters, perhaps noticing what happens when things are left to the discretion of progressive-minded judges, did not take the bait, and 53% voted for the stronger version of the new law.

It’s worth noting that all major Christian denominations opposed the measure. Just as in Britain, Sweden, Germany, and the Netherlands, organized Christianity seems consistently to act against the interests and welfare of the native population. The same is true of the major Protestant denominations in the United States, which are wholly in thrall to progressive trans-nationalism. Even the Vatican has in large part caved in to Multicultural orthodoxy.

Notice also that foreigners were reported to be overwhelmingly against the initiative. Well, DUH!

The media probably expect native white Europeans to feel guilty when they hear that the Swiss have offended their foreign guests with their “xenophobia”. But the vote didn’t affect me that way, and I strongly suspect that the majority of Europeans are not wallowing in guilt as called for by the script. Most people are probably thinking, “At last! A display of common sense!”

Here’s the report from Swissinfo:

Swiss Approve Foreign Criminal Initiative

The Swiss have voted to adopt tough new regulations on the deportation of foreigners convicted of serious crimes and welfare fraud.

Final results showed 53 per cent voting in favour of a rightwing initiative. The initiative also won the backing of 18 out of 26 cantons.

In a complex nationwide vote on Sunday, the electorate were faced with a choice between a hardline option and a compromise version; or approving or rejecting both proposals.

Turnout was higher than usual — at 52 per cent — a sign of how contentious were the issues being voted on.

The rightwing People’s Party initiative called for the automatic expulsion of non-Swiss offenders convicted of crimes ranging from murder to breaking and entry and social security fraud. The proposal denies judges judicial discretion over deportation.

An alternative option by parliament would have allowed for a case-by-case examination and additional integration measures.

Parliament’s counter-proposal was rejected by 54 per cent of voters, results showed.

An unofficial voting platform for migrants, Baloti, reported very different voting results: 85 per cent against the initiative, and 15 per cent for.

Reactions

“In future, foreign nationals who have committed one of the criminal offences named in the text of the initiative should automatically lose their right of residence and be deported to their country of origin,” said a government statement. It said Justice Minister Simonetta Sommaruga would “set to work on implementing the initiative without delay”.

“The majority of voters have sent a clear signal that they consider foreign criminality to be a serious problem. The Federal Council [government] respects the will of the people and will set to work on putting the task confided in it into practice,” it went on.

The government statement also pointed to problems in implementing the initiative, saying parliament would have to draft a list defining precisely which offences would result in deportation.

A statement by the People’s Party said voters had sent a clear signal that “criminal foreigners should be systematically deported”. It said the acceptance of the initiative marked “the first step on the road to greater security”. The legal framework for the initiative’s introduction had to be created as soon as possible, it said.

The Federal Migration Commission said the initiative would be very difficult to enforce. It said the state must not act arbitrarily in deporting foreigners, but judge each case individually.

“Even People’s Party parliamentarians agree that no one should be sent back to a country to face torture or death. Automatic deportation, as demanded by the initiative, is therefore not possible,” the commission said in a statement.

The main Christian churches, which had opposed both initiative and counter-proposal, called for deportations to continue to be judged on a case-by-case basis.

In a joint statement, the Swiss Federation of Protestant Churches and the Catholic Bishops Conference said the cantonal and federal authorities must ensure that implementation of the initiative conformed to the constitution. They also said it was important “not to cast a negative light on migrants”.

Tax vote

In a separate vote, the electorate rejected a proposal by the centre-left and trade unions to set a minimum tax rate for wealthy citizens across the country.

Final results showed 58 per cent of voters and a majority of cantons voting against the initiative.

The Social Democrats, who had pioneered the initiative, said the result was “a missed opportunity for greater tax fairness”. But the party said that the fact that more than 40 per cent voted in favour showed the perceived need for changes.

The business federation, economiesuisse, welcomed the result. It said the people had shown their confidence in the Swiss tax model.

The cantonal finance directors echoed this, saying the result was a “victory” for the cantons, which enjoy autonomy in setting tax rates.

Under the proposal, the minimum rate for annual income exceeding SFr250,000 ($249,402) would have been set at 22 per cent and 0.5 per cent for wealth of at least SFr2 million.

The initiative was aimed at putting an end to what the left said were abuses of the tax autonomy the 26 cantons enjoy under the Swiss federalist system.

Deportation

The initiative aims at the automatic deportation of foreigners convicted of serious crimes such as murder, rape, other serious sexual offences, violence such as armed robbery, drug trafficking, human trafficking, and breaking and entering. Welfare fraud is also included.

The counter-proposal tightened the list to (among others): premeditated murder, murder, rape, aggravated armed robbery and serious violation of the drug law. Grievous bodily harm was added in by the House of Representatives. The counter-proposal stated that deportations should respect the Swiss constitution and international law.

Gates of Vienna News Feed 11/27/2010More than 100,000 people demonstrated on the streets of Dublin today in protest against the Irish government’s decision to accept a bank bailout from the EU. The market boost from Ireland’s decision didn’t last long, and the bond market has responded to the continuing European debt crisis with record yields. Investors speculate on which country will be next to need a rescue, and even German bonds are feeling the crunch, as doubt emerges as to how long Germany can keep on rescuing the other member states of the EU.

Mohammed Coefficient: 200%

Cultural Enrichment News

The city of Portland, Oregon escaped disaster last night when a young mujahid failed in his attempt to detonate a car bomb during a crowded tree-lighting ceremony in a downtown square.

The culturally enriched teenage terrorist intended to make a “spectacular show”, and didn’t mind if he killed children and babies. He thought his cell phone would set off the bomb, but didn’t realize that he had bought his bogus “explosives” from FBI operatives. This was a smoothly-executed sting, and the Portland FBI office is to be commended for its deft handling of the case.

At least three people have emailed me to point out an interesting aspect of this incident: it has the first known Mohammed Coefficient of over 100%. The alleged would-be Portland Christmas Tree Bomber is a 19-year-old Somali-American named Mohamed Osman Mohamud, which gives this incident a Mohammed Coefficient of 200%.

When I first started collecting material for this post, I downloaded the news article and the FBI press release into a document, and searched the combined text for certain keywords to determine whether it complied with anti-Islamophobic Muslim Brotherhood guidelines.

1.   “Islam”. Incidence: 0. Check.
2.   “Muslim”. Incidence: 0. Check.
3.   “Allah”. Incidence: 0. Check.
4.   “Mohammed”. Incidence: 0. (except for the name of the perp) Check.
5.   “Jihad”. Incidence: 7. FAIL!

What’s this? How could it be?? The word “jihad” appears four times in the FBI’s own press release!

This violates specific directives issued at the highest levels of the Justice Department: the word “jihad” is not to be used by employees of the department, because it is subject to varying interpretations. The most frequently used definition, according to the guidelines, is “inner struggle”, and agents are instructed not to antagonize their Muslim fellow citizens by using it in a way that implies a reference to violence and holy war.

So what’s it doing in the press release, then?

Well, the FBI had a slight problem: young Mohamud involved himself with an online outfit called “Jihad Recollections”. I suppose it would have been possible to write the name as “J***d Recollections” instead, but that would have been a bit too much. Besides, Mr. Mohamud larded his talk generously with the word “jihad”, and meant it to have the sense of “killing unbelievers in the name of Allah”. He was obviously one of the tiny minority of Muslims who have mistakenly misconstrued the meaning of the word.

Yes, the unfortunate fact is that virtually one hundred percent of the terrorists who are trying to kill us — especially the ones with “Mohammed” in their names — believe that they are waging jihad against the infidel for the sake of Allah as written in the Koran and revealed to his messenger Mohammed. If only we could engage these confused kids, and help them understand the mistake they are making!

This problem will obviously require a much larger federal expenditure for education and outreach within the Muslim community.

Below are some excerpts from the news report and the press release. First, from Oregon Live:

FBI thwarts terrorist bombing attempt at Portland holiday tree lighting, authorities say

The FBI thwarted an attempted terrorist bombing in Portland’s Pioneer Courthouse Square before the city’s annual tree-lighting Friday night, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Oregon.

A Corvallis man, thinking he was going to ignite a bomb, drove a van to the corner of the square at Southwest Yamhill Street and Sixth Avenue and attempted to detonate it.

However, the supposed explosive was a dummy that FBI operatives supplied to him, according to an affidavit in support of a criminal complaint signed Friday night by U.S. Magistrate Judge John V. Acosta.

Mohamed Osman Mohamud, 19, a Somali-born U.S. citizen, was arrested at 5:42 p.m., 18 minutes before the tree lighting was to occur, on an accusation of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction. The felony charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison and a $250,000 fine.

The arrest was the culmination of a long-term undercover operation, during which Mohamud had been monitored for months as his alleged bomb plot developed.

“The device was in fact inert, and the public was never in danger,” according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The investigation involved the FBI, Oregon State Police, Portland Police Bureau, Corvallis Police Department and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

Mohamud will appear in U.S. District Court in Portland on Monday.

[…]

According to the FBI affidavit, the case began in August 2009 when Mohamud was in e-mail contact with an unindicted associate overseas who was believed to be involved in terrorist activities. In December 2009, while the unindicted associate was in a frontier province of Pakistan, Mohamud and the associate discussed the possibility of Mohamud traveling to Pakistan to participate in violent jihad.

The associate allegedly referred Mohamud to a second associate overseas and provided him with a name and e-mail address. In the months that followed, Mohamud made several unsuccessful attempts to contact the second associate.

Ultimately, an FBI undercover operative contacted Mohamud in a June 2010 e-mail under the guise of being an associate of the first unindicted associate.

Mohamud and the FBI operative agreed to meet in Portland a month later. Mohamud allegedly told the FBI operative that he had written articles that were published in Jihad Recollections, an online magazine that advocated holy war.

Mohamud also indicated he intended to become “operational,” meaning he wanted to put an explosion together but needed help. The two met again in August 2010 in a Portland hotel.

“During this meeting, Mohamud explained how he had been thinking of committing some form of violent jihad since the age of 15,” the affidavit says. “Mohamud then told (the FBI operatives) that he had identified a potential target for a bomb: the Christmas tree-lighting ceremony in Portland’s Pioneer Courthouse Square on Nov. 26, 2010.”

The FBI operatives cautioned Mohamud several times about the seriousness of his plan, noting that there would be many people, including children, at the event, and that Mohamud could abandon his plans at any time with no shame.

“You know there’s going to be a lot of children there?” an FBI operative asked Mohamud. “You know there are gonna be a lot of children there?”

Mohamud allegedly responded he was looking for a “huge mass that will … be attacked in their own element with their families celebrating the holidays.”

Mohamud dismissed concerns about law enforcement, explaining that, “ … It’s in Oregon; and Oregon, like, you know, nobody ever thinks about,” according to the affidavit.

[…]

On Nov. 18, FBI operatives picked up Mohamud to travel to Portland, where they would finalize details of the attack.

David S. Kris, assistant U.S. attorney general for national security, said, “The complaint alleges that Mohamud attempted to detonate what he believes to be a vehicle bomb at a crowded holiday event in downtown Portland, but a coordinated undercover law enforcement action was able to thwart his efforts and ensure no one was harmed.”

See the rest of the article for details on the planning of the operation, the testing of the explosives, and the preparations for the day of the attack.

Here’s the full text of the press release from the Portland field office of the FBI:

Oregon Resident Arrested in Plot to Bomb Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in Portland

Vehicle Bomb Left at Scene Was Inert and Posed No Danger to Public

PORTLAND, OR—Mohamed Osman Mohamud, 19, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Somalia and resident of Corvallis, Ore., has been arrested on charges of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction (explosives) in connection with a plot to detonate a vehicle bomb at an annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony earlier this evening in Portland, Ore., the Justice Department announced.

According to a criminal complaint signed in the District of Oregon, Mohamud was arrested by the FBI and Portland Police Bureau at approximately 5:40 p.m. (PST) Nov. 26, 2010 after he attempted to detonate what he believed to be an explosives-laden van that was parked near the tree lighting ceremony in Portland’s Pioneer Courthouse Square. The arrest was the culmination of a long-term undercover operation, during which Mohamud had been monitored closely for months as his alleged bomb plot developed. The device was in fact inert; and the public was never in danger from the device.

Mohamud is expected to make his initial appearance in federal court in Portland on Monday. He faces a maximum statutory sentence of life in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted of the charge of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction.

Dwight C. Holton, U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon, said, “This defendant’s chilling determination is a stark reminder that there are people—even here in Oregon—who are determined to kill Americans. The good work of law enforcement protected Oregonians in this case—and we have no reason to believe there is any continuing threat arising from this case.”

“The complaint alleges that Mohamud attempted to detonate what he believed to be a vehicle bomb at a crowded holiday event in downtown Portland, but a coordinated undercover law enforcement action was able to thwart his efforts and ensure no one was harmed,” said David Kris, Assistant Attorney General for National Security. “While the public was never in danger from the device, this case serves as yet another reminder of the need for continued vigilance both at home and abroad.”

“The threat was very real. Our investigation shows that Mohamud was absolutely committed to carrying out an attack on a very grand scale,” said Arthur Balizan, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Oregon. “At the same time, I want to reassure the people of this community that, at every turn, we denied him the ability to actually carry out the attack.”

According to the affidavit filed in support of the criminal complaint, in August 2009, Mohamud was in e-mail contact with an unindicted associate (UA1) overseas who is believed to be involved in terrorist activities. In December 2009, while UA1 was located in the northwest frontier province of Pakistan, Mohamud and UA1 discussed the possibility of Mohamud traveling to Pakistan to engage in violent jihad. UAI allegedly referred Mohamud to a second unindicted associate (UA2) overseas and provided Mohamud with a name and email address to facilitate the process.

In the months that followed, Mohamud allegedly made several unsuccessful attempts to contact UA2. Ultimately, an FBI undercover operative contacted Mohamud via e-mail in June 2010 under the guise of being an associate of UA1. Mohamud and the FBI undercover operative then agreed to meet in Portland in July 2010. At this meeting, Mohamud allegedly told the FBI undercover operative that he had written articles that were published in Jihad Recollections, an online magazine that advocated violent jihad. Mohamud also indicated that he wanted to become “operational.” Asked what he meant by “operational,” Mohamud stated that he wanted to put an “explosion” together, but needed help.

At a second meeting in August 2010, Mohamud allegedly told undercover FBI operatives he had been thinking of committing violent jihad since the age of 15. According to the affidavit, Mohamud then told the undercover FBI operatives that he had identified a potential target for a bomb: the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Portland’s Pioneer Courthouse Square on Nov. 26, 2010.

According to the affidavit, the undercover FBI operatives cautioned Mohamud several times about the seriousness of this plan, noting there would be many people at the event, including many children, and emphasized that Mohamud could abandon his attack plans at any time with no shame. “You know there’s gonna be a lot of children there?” an undercover FBI operative asked Mohamud. According to the affidavit, Mohamud responded that he was looking for a “huge mass that will…be attacked in their own element with their families celebrating the holidays.” Further discussing the attack, Mohamud allegedly stated, “…it’s in Oregon; and Oregon like you know, nobody ever thinks about it.”

The affidavit alleges that in subsequent months, Mohamud continued to express his interest in carrying out the attack and worked on logistics. He allegedly identified a location to place the bomb and mailed bomb components to the undercover FBI operatives, who he believed were assembling the device. He also mailed them passport photos, as part of a plan to help him sneak out of the country after the attack. In addition, Mohamud provided the undercover FBI operatives with a thumb drive that contained detailed directions to the bomb location and operational instructions for the attack.

According to the affidavit, on November 4, 2010, Mohamud and the undercover FBI operatives traveled to a remote location in Lincoln County, Ore., where they detonated a bomb concealed in a backpack as a trial run for the upcoming attack. Afterwards, on the drive back to Corvallis, undercover FBI operatives questioned Mohamud as to whether he was capable of looking at the bodies of those who would be killed in the upcoming attack in Portland. According to the affidavit, Mohamud responded, “I want whoever is attending that event to leave, to leave either dead or injured.”

Upon returning to Corvallis that same day, the affidavit alleges that Mohamud recorded a video of himself with the undercover FBI operatives in which he read a written statement that offered a rationale for his bomb attack. On Nov. 18, 2010, undercover FBI operatives picked up Mohamud to travel to Portland in order to finalize the details of the attack.

Earlier this evening, Mohamud was arrested after he attempted to remotely detonate what he believed to be explosives in a van that was parked near the Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Portland, the affidavit alleges.

This case was investigated by the FBI, with assistance from the Oregon State Police, the Corvallis Police Department, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, and the Portland Police Bureau. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ethan D. Knight and Jeffrey Sweet from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon. Trial Attorneys Jolie F. Zimmerman and David Cora, from the Counterterrorism Section of the Justice Department’s National Security Division, are assisting.

The charges and allegations contained in the criminal complaint are merely allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

The EDL: Opposing Sharia in Preston

EDL demo, Preston

The EDL staged a demonstration in Preston today, one of three mounted simultaneously in various parts of England.

Aeneas has a report at the ICLA website:

Five Thousand Strong English Defence League Demonstration Against Sharia in Preston

Around 5000 EDL supporters braved the winter weather to assemble in Preston against sharia. This was one of two simultaneous EDL demonstrations in different parts of England which demonstrates a new capability for the organisation. It will only be a matter of time before numerous demonstrations will be possible simultaneously.

The demonstration in Preston was largely peaceful, though some trouble was caused during the speeches by some agent provocateurs who had disguised themselves as football fans. The genuine EDL supporters made their views clear with regard to this group of trouble makers. It seems that all manner of measures is used by the EDL’s opponents to disrupt its peaceful demonstrations in an attempt to tarnish its image. The Government has lost the argument and seems willing to resort to any manner of dirty tricks in their desperation.

The police behaved in an exemplary and friendly manner both before and during the demonstration. The only real problems occurred afterwards. As EDL supporters were socialising after the protest had taken place, the numerous pubs where they had congregated were raided by the police and all occupants forced to leave. It seems that this was a deliberate provocation, perhaps ordered by the senior politically appointed officers, in order to get EDL supporters to react to this outrageous treatment. It seems that the last thing that the powers that be want is a peaceful EDL demonstration. Nevertheless, the vast majority of EDL supporters didn’t react to this strategy. The way that the police has been corrupted by the oligarchs who now run the British state now means that it is more essential than ever that senior police officers are directly elected like they are in the United States. Politically motivated policing is undermining confidence in the police service and undermining equality before the law which is at the very heart of our democracy (though at odds with sharia).

Overall, the day in Preston was a resounding success – it was well attended, largely peaceful, and supported by the many people who were watching the demonstration or going about their ordinary business. The support for the EDL has clearly grown in recent weeks and months. The support base is strong and growing stronger by the day as the British Government continues to ignore the British people as it proceeds to gradually impose sharia norms against their will and for goodness knows what reason.

The Time That is Given Us

The International Free Press Society sponsored a conference today in Copenhagen. Below is the speech that was given during the event by Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff (photo © Snaphanen).

ESW Copenhagen Nov. 2010

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I stand here before you in the city of Copenhagen in the year 2010. This is widely considered to be an enlightened country in the heart of an enlightened continent.

Our basic freedoms have long been guaranteed — first by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as passed by the United Nations in 1948, and then buttressed by the Council of Europe in 1950 through the European Convention of Human Rights, which was later affirmed by the European Union. Our individual countries have additionally codified the same basic rights in their own constitutions.

These rights include the freedom of individual conscience, the right to assemble peaceably, and the right to practice our religion freely, or to have no religion at all. And, perhaps most importantly of all, they include the right to voice our opinions freely and to publish them without hindrance.

Yet freedom of speech is under attack today here in Denmark, as it is in my own country Austria, and indeed all across Europe. Today, in 21st century Western Europe, our right to free speech is being shut down quietly and systematically with an effectiveness that the commissars in the old Soviet Union could only dream of.

A milestone in this ominous totalitarian trend will be reached tomorrow, 28 November 2010, when the member states of the European Union are required to implement an innocuous-sounding legal provision known as the “Framework decision on combating racism and xenophobia”, or, more fully, the “Council Framework Decision 2008/913/JHA of 28 November 2008 on combating certain forms and expressions of racism and xenophobia by means of criminal law.” According to the final article of the Framework Decision, “Member States shall take the necessary measures to comply with the provisions of this Framework Decision by 28 November 2010.”

Why does this matter to the cause of free speech in Europe?

If you read the full text of the Framework Decision (which may be found in the legislative section of the EU’s website), you will learn that “Each Member State shall take the measures necessary… to ensure that the following intentional conduct is punishable.” Such “intentional conduct” includes “conduct which is a pretext for directing acts against a group of persons or a member of such a group defined by reference to race, colour, descent, or national or ethnic origin.”

Based on what has recently happened to Geert Wilders and me — and earlier to Gregorius Nekschot, Jussi Halla-aho, and numerous others — we can all guess who will be punished under this provision of the Framework Decision: those who criticize Islam.

Even worse, a complaint made by a member state does not have to be “dependent on a report or an accusation made by a victim of the conduct”, nor does the alleged offender have to be “physically present in its territory”.

In other words, if the dhimmi Austrian government objects to a cartoon published by Kurt Westergaard here in Denmark, Mr. Westergaard may be extradited by the Austrian Ministry of Justice to answer to hate speech charges in Austria. The European Arrest Warrant guarantees that the Danish government cannot legally interfere with such an extradition, and the 800-strong “European Gendarmerie Force” would be available to fetch Mr. Westergaard out of his bed and bring him to Vienna — with impunity.

As of tomorrow, the above scenario becomes a real possibility. It is not a paranoid fantasy. These legal provisions are detailed in the EU’s public documents, and they will enjoy the full force of law in all EU member states as of midnight tonight.

The death throes of free speech in Europe begin tomorrow morning.

As most of you already know, nearly a year ago I was made aware that “hate speech” charges might be filed against me — I had “denigrated religious teachings” by giving one of my public lectures on Islam.

The possibility of my prosecution was not communicated to me directly, but through articles in the press.

It was not until last month that a court date was set for my case. Once again, I had to discover this fact in the press — in NEWS, the same left-wing newspaper that brought the original complaint against me. I was not officially notified of my hearing date until several days later.

The evidence used against me this past week was a transcript of a tape of my lecture, provided to the court by the same socialist newspaper. It included words that were not spoken by me, and words that were not spoken in public, which therefore were not a violation of the law.

But my case is not really about the law. It is a political trial, and like the trials of Geert Wilders and Jussi Halla-aho, it is intended to silence someone who speaks out against the barbaric nature of sharia law.

Above all else, it is intended to discourage anyone who might consider following in my footsteps. The oligarchs who rule Europe are determined to prevent any frank discussion among their citizens of Islam and its legal doctrines.

These are the methods of a totalitarian state.

They are more successful than those of the Nazis and the Fascists and the Communists because they are accomplished quietly and peacefully, with no need for concentration camps or gulags or mass graves or the shot in the back of the neck in the middle of the night.

They are surgical strikes executed via our legal systems, and they are quite effective. Between the summary punishment carried out against Theo Van Gogh and the Framework Decision applied though our courts, there is no room left for us to maneuver.

We are systematically being silenced.

I admire the provisions of the First Amendment that all Americans enjoy as their birthright. Its free speech provisions will make the imposition of sharia that much more difficult in the United States.

But here in Europe we are not so well-protected. Our constitutions and the rules imposed upon us by the EU allow certain exceptions to the right to speak freely, and those little rips in the fabric of our rights are enough to tear the entire structure to pieces.

We desperately need our own version of the First Amendment. We need leaders who are wise and courageous enough to compose and implement legal instruments that affirm the same fundamental rights that are guaranteed to all citizens by the United States Constitution.

We do not yet have any leaders of this caliber. But they are beginning to appear on the scene, and one day they will be the real leaders of our individual European nations, replacing the internationalist totalitarian usurpers who oppress us today.

Our nations will be governed by their own people, by those who truly represent them. Their leaders will be true patriots, people like Jimmie Åkesson and Kent Ekeroth in Sweden, or Oskar Freysinger in Switzerland, or Geert Wilders and Martin Bosma in the Netherlands, or Filip Dewinter and Frank Vanhecke in Flanders.

We are going to reclaim our continent and our nations. We will take our countries back from those thieves who sneaked them away from us while were lulled into somnolence by our wealth and our pleasant diversions.

This will not be an easy task. Our path will be strewn with obstacles and great dangers. But we must travel it nonetheless, because if we do not, European civilization — the heart of Western Civilization — will be destroyed.

What were formerly our nations will become regions with indistinct boundaries, populated mainly by people of foreign cultures and administered by corrupt totalitarian bureaucrats. The natives — the original inhabitants, our children, the descendants of those who created the greatest civilization the world has ever known — will be reduced to curators and costumed actors in a quaint theme park.

Call it “Euro World”. Authentic cuisine, ethnic dancers, and fireworks at ten o’clock.

This is what we will face if we give up our cherished freedoms. If lose our freedom of speech, then we are lost forever.

I am not a victim. I intend to stand up for what is right. I will defend what needs to be defended. Above everything else, I will exercise my God-given right to speak freely about what is happening. Freedom of speech is the single most important freedom we possess.

I am doing this for my daughter, and for her children, for those who will have to live in the world we are now preparing for them. I am doing what our grandparents should perhaps have done during the 1930s, when their own freedoms were under threat.

This is our time. This cup will not pass from us.

I am reminded of a passage in J.R.R. Tolkien’s famous trilogy, The Lord of the Rings.

It is an exchange between Frodo the hobbit and Gandalf the wizard, and it concerns the perilous quest on which Frodo and his friends have been sent.

Frodo says: “I wish it need not have happened in my time.”

Gandalf responds: “So do I, and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

It is time for us to decide what to do with the time that is given us.

If I were to speak these same words tomorrow morning, I might be subject to arrest. I could be charged under the provisions of the Framework Decision, and extradited to the country that charged me using a European Arrest Warrant, escorted by the European Gendarmerie.

This is not an imaginary scenario; it is a very real possibility.

It is true that only a few people are likely to undergo such an ordeal. But it only takes a few people.

How many people have to endure what Mr. Wilders and I are enduring before everyone else gets the message?

How many examples have to be set before the rest of the European population understands the new rules, and is cowed into submission?

And we must remember to whom they will be submitting in the end. They will be submitting to our successors in Europe. They will be submitting to our replacements.

We must remember that the word for submission in Arabic is Islam.

When there are enough Muslims living in Europe — and it doesn’t have to be a majority of the population, just somewhere around fifteen or twenty percent — we will be living under Islamic law, and not the laws that presently govern us.

We will no longer enjoy what constitutional rights remain to us now. Our rights will be completely prescribed and delimited by sharia. Women will become the virtual chattel of men. Christians and Jews will be driven out or forced to convert to Islam. Atheists and homosexuals will be killed.

The European Union would consider these words to be “hate speech”. Under the Framework Decision, they would be classified as “racism and xenophobia”, and I could be prosecuted for saying them.

But they are in fact the simple truth.

Anyone can verify them by studying history. Anyone who chooses can read the Koran and the hadith and the Sunna of the Prophet.

Widely available official treatises on Islamic law confirm that my description is not “hate speech”, but a plain and accurate reading of the tenets of Islamic law.

It has become obvious that to tell the truth about Islam is now considered “incitement to religious hatred”.

It is now clear that non-Muslims who reveal the tenets of sharia law to the public are “denigrating religious teachings”.

If we meekly accept these rules, then we are acquiescing in the imposition of sharia law in our own nations. And I, for one, will not sit silently while this happens.

I don’t want my daughter to live under sharia.

Our time is short. If you and I do not envision an Islamic future for ourselves, then we must speak out now.

If we wish to preserve the right to speak and publish freely, then we must exercise it now.

I wish this need not have happened in my time. But it has.

We must make full use of the time that remains to us.

Thank you.

Gates of Vienna News Feed 11/26/2010

Gates of Vienna News Feed 11/26/2010Canada has decided to boycott the UN’s proposed “Durban III” conference. Immigration Minister Jason Kenney said that the event would encourage racism rather than fight it, and said that his country could no longer take part in such a “charade”.

In other news, President Obama was accidentally elbowed in the lip by an opposing player in a basketball game at Ft. McNair. The president required twelve stitches to close the cut.

Meanwhile, India has created two new divisions — more than 36,000 soldiers — and deployed them in the northeast of the country to guard against a Chinese attack through Burma.

Tear Gas and Rubber Bullets for the Christians of Giza

Below is a news report from AINA about the latest outbreak in an ongoing conflict between the Copts and the municipal authorities in Giza, a suburb of Cairo. The construction of a new church is underway, for which the Christians say they have the proper permits, but the government has intervened to stop the church from being built.

The trouble started earlier this month, and the persecution only grew more intense after the Copts resisted the government’s actions. What’s interesting about this latest incident is that the Copts have not been cowed, but are staging mass demonstrations and protesting vigorously.

I’ve reposted the entire article below. Click through the original to see the photos:

Egyptian Christians Clash With State Security Forces Over Church Construction

By Mary Abdelmassih

(AINA) — Clashes broke out between Christian protesters and Egyptian security forces over the construction of St. Mary and St. Michael church in Talbiya, within the Omraniya neighborhood of Giza, resulting in the killing of two Copts, hundreds of injuries and the arrest of more than 200 Copts.

Nearly 5,000 security forces with over 45 vehicles cordoned off the church site at 3:00 am on Wednesday November 24, while builders were working on the roof. They used tear gas, rubber bullets and live ammunition (video of Copts being shot at).

Later on Muslims joined security forces in pelting Copts with stones from under the bridge of the ring road overlooking the Church (Picture enclosed).

This was the second time within three days that security forces stormed the Church, but this time they successfully entered and occupied the building. According to eyewitnesses, security forces fired tear gas inside the church, where nearly 200 people were keeping vigil, afraid that security might enter and demolish the building.

“The forces arrived and told us over the microphone to stop working and leave the church, then they started firing tear gas and rubber bullets,” one of the witnesses said. “They went to church and fired tear gas on women and children who were in church. They ran after us over a quarter of a mile to arrest us.”

Accoriding to Coptic activist Wagih Yacoub, “Father Karas went out asking them to stop firing tear gas because of the children, so they fired one at him injuring his feet.”

Copts said they were unable to hide inside the church, so security tracked them down in the streets surrounding the church and inside the neighboring houses where they fled. Over 200 Copts were arrested.

Police clashed with Copts at several locations, first at the church construction site in the early hours of the morning, then two hours later when nearly 3000 Copts, angry at the shootings at the church, demonstrated in front of the Giza governorate building, many bearing makeshift crosses, where they were met by armed riot police who fired again tear gas and rubber bullets. The demonstrators broke down two police kiosks, signs and flower pots. They hurled stones at the governorate building.

Coptic demonstrators gathered on top of the bridge of “Mounib” ring road, to denounce the arrest of their colleagues after the riots, which brought traffic to the Pyramids road to a stand still. They were dispersed by security forces.

Failing to reach the Church which the security forced had previously encircled and blocked, nearly 5000 Copts demonstrated outside Mar Mina’s Church in Giza, angry at the treatment of the Copts in Talbiya. Police dispersed the crowds without any incidents.

Dr. Naguib Ghobrial, President of the Egyptian Union of Human Rights, stated that he learnt through reliable medical sources that 93 Copts were in Kasr El-Aini Hospital, all with injuries ranging between bullet holes and eye injuries from explosions. There were reports of limb amputations.

The problem started on November 11, when the authorities wanted to halt the construction of St. Mary’s church although the Copts said they had an official permit. Another clash between security forces and the Copts of St. Mary’s Church occurred on November 22, when the Governor of Giza visited the site and calmed down the congregation by promising the church would be completed upon presenting a new application and provided they did not demonstrate. “This is the answer of the sly government, we get attacked less than two days later,” said a Copt at the Church. “He was buying time to pounce on us at 4.00 AM”

“The state-owned media were not accurate in covering the incident,” said Ebeid, “They followed the statements issued State Security which are all lies. The media filled the pages with how many of the security forces were injured instead of going to the terrorized Copts and reporting on how they were attacked, beaten and hounded in the streets for a minor building offence.”

Coptic protests on this scale are rare in Egypt, but sectarian tensions have risen because of the double-standards employed by then government, when a mosque can be built in one day, while a church takes years to obtain Presidential permission to build. Even after that State Security steps in with some pretext and the new church is closed down.

Human rights groups say attacks on Copts are on the rise, underscoring the government’s failure to address the issue of church building, and the treatment of Christians.

Activist Hossam Bahgat of Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights told Reuters “We have been warning about the government’s failure to deal with the rising sense of injustice by the Christian community for a long time. This is an extremely disturbing development.” He added “Today we are talking about security forces using excessive forces with peaceful protesters demanding their constitutional right to freedom of worship.”

Dr. Naguib Ghobrial criticized today’s assault on the church and the congregation — “Just because the back staircase for the church was not built.” He called on Copts not to vote for the NDP, President Mubarak’s governing party, holding it responsible for the persecution of the Copts through its security and executive authorities. He also called for the suspension of Egypt’s membership in the UN Human Rights Council until it fulfills the pledges it made to the Council last February.

Later in the early hours of Thursday November 25, authorities charged 170 Copts with 14 various offenses, including attempted murder of Assistant Security Director of Giza, attacks on the Central Security Forces, attempts to kill officers at police station construction, and vandalizing central security cars, robbery of auto batteries of central security, congregation in violation of the law, riots, and the use of lethal weapons and firearms without a license, not carrying identity cards, and throwing bricks.

It was reported that thirty lawyers are staging a sit-in in front of the Court of Giza for being prevented from attending the investigation with the accused Copts in the Talbiya events. Security imposed a siege on the lawyers to prevent them from entering the court.

Pope Shenouda’s criticized the governorate and regretted that the matter “…reached one death, wounded people and demonstrations. I want the governorate to act with leniency and not with force, because force breeds force.”

Lars Vilks: Sweden is Too Cold for Jihad

Stamp — Modoggie 1Swedish artist Lars Vilks is in the news again — and also in the crosshairs of the Great Jihad. Mr. Vilks, the creator of the notorious Modoggies, has been the object of death plots in the past, the most notorious of them hatched by the American mujahidette “Jihad Jane”.

Now the fatwas are flying again, and the Modoggie Man has just been targeted for death by al-Shabab, the local franchise of Al Qaeda in Somalia.

According to AsiaOne:

Somali Militia Issues Death Threat to Swedish Artist

WASHINGTON – A Swedish fighter with the Shebab, a Somalian militia with ties to Al-Qaeda, has urged Muslims to kill an artist from Sweden who depicted the Prophet Mohammed as a dog, US monitoring group SITE said Tuesday.

“Wherever you are, if not today or tomorrow, know that we haven’t yet forgotten about you,” said the Shebab member Abu Zaid in a video warning to artist Lars Vilks.

“We will get hold of you and with Allah’s permission we will catch you wherever you are and in whatever hole you are hiding in,” Zaid said in a recruitment video with English and Swahili subtitles that calls for Muslims to join the radical movement.

[…]

“Know what awaits you, as it will be nothing but this: slaughter! For that is what you deserve,” Zaid said in the video that SITE said was posted on jihadist Internet forums on Monday.

“To my brothers and sisters, I call you to make (migration), and if you can kill this dog called Lars (Vilks), then you will receive a great reward from Allah,” Zaid said, according to SITE.

Lars Vilks responded to the Somali fatwa with his customary phlegmatic calm. Rather than be alarmed by the news, he surmised that the jihadis will find the cold weather and snow in Sweden too much to tolerate, and will stay away.

Not only that, he described the latest video (embedded here below the jump) as more of a recruiting tool for al-Shabab than a real threat. The Somali jihad fighters are looking for more volunteers, and have identified the “Swedes” as likely candidates.

According to The Herald Sun:

Swedish Artist Says There ‘Too Much Snow’ For Amateur Terrorists to Kill Him

“I can feel pretty safe,” he said, adding, “Right now the weather is looking really good (for me). It’s too cold and there is too much snow for someone to try an amateur terrorist act.”

US monitoring group SITE said that a Swedish fighter with the Shebab militia, which has ties to al-Qaeda, urged Muslims to kill Vilks.

“Wherever you are, if not today or tomorrow, know that we haven’t yet forgotten about you,” said Shebab member Abu Zaid in a video.

“Know what awaits you, as it will be nothing but this: slaughter. For that is what you deserve.

“We will get hold of you and with Allah’s permission we will catch you wherever you are and in whatever hole you are hiding in,” Zaid said in a recruitment video with English and Swahili subtitles that calls for Muslims to join the radical movement.

Vilks dismissed the video as a desperate attempt for the organisation to recruit new members.

“That organisation has no resources to speak of. They are almost bankrupt,” he said.

“They send out that type of information to try to find volunteers that could interest them and to get attention. It’s something that can only lure in a few crazy people.”

The death fatwa/recruiting video is in the middle section of this Swedish news video. The announcer is speaking Swedish, and so is the mujahid, but the latter was thoughtful enough to subtitle his portion in English (and also Somali):

Hunted Down and Silenced

Cultural Enrichment News

A culturally enriched “Australian” tracked down his ex-girlfriend and cut out her tongue. Fortunately, the magistrate in whose courtroom he appeared was sensible enough to deny him bail.

This horrendous crime has a Mohammed Coefficient of 100%.

According to The Courier-Mail:

Magistrate Horrified by Attack on Woman Who Had Her Tongue Cut Out on Gold Coast

A South Australian man who allegedly sliced his ex-partner’s tongue in half after tracking her down in Queensland has been refused bail by a horrified female magistrate.

Mohammed Tahir, 21, was charged with torture, acts intended to maim or disfigure and grievous bodily harm after the alleged attack on the Gold Coast earlier this month.

He applied for bail today in Southport Magistrates Court via video link from jail.

His lawyer argued he should be released to care for his sick father.

However, police strongly opposed bail, saying Mr Tahir had tracked his ex-partner down to Queensland despite her changing her name by deed poll and changing her phone number three times.

He allegedly found her at her Surfers Paradise unit, bashed her with a rum bottle and used a knife to cut open her mouth and slice her tongue.

The court was told her injuries were the worst a Gold Coast Hospital emergency department doctor had seen.

Magistrate Catherine Pirie said the alleged attack was “horrifying and brutal”.

“I’ve been on the bench more than 10 years and I don’t think I’ve seen anything like this,” she said.

Ms Pirie said the case against Mr Tahir was “exceedingly strong” and it would be”entirely inappropriate’ to grant him bail.

He was remanded in custody until his next court mention on December 23.

Gates of Vienna News Feed 11/25/2010President Barack Hussein Obama’s paternal grandmother, Ms. Sarah Omar, is on hajj in Mecca with the president’s uncle and four of her grandchildren. She was interviewed by the media, and said that she prays to Allah that her grandson might convert to Islam.

In other news, a school in western Sweden is in trouble for allowing its pupils to visit a church during end-of-term celebrations. The problem is that the children were encouraged by the pastor to pray while they were at the church.

Fair England Be Your Sepulchre!

The news items from the UK that passed through my hands today were so depressing that I could hardly bear to look at them.

John BullFirst there was the story about a 15-year-old girl who was arrested for burning a Koran and posting a video of the act on Facebook. She may be charged with “inciting religious hatred”.

But Muslims in Britain need not fear: an All-Party Parliamentary Group on Islamophobia has now been established. In the future anyone who insults Muslims or denigrates Islam will be held to account by the people’s elected representatives.

Government counterterrorism officials warn that threat level is estimated to be “severe” during the upcoming 2012 London Olympics, and the risk of terrorism is even higher at street parties and other side events. If you look at both those articles, however, you’ll notice that the word “Islam” is not mentioned once.

As far as Her Majesty’s government is concerned, Islam has nothing to do with terrorism. Despite the fact that more than 99% of the world’s terror attacks are committed by Muslims who fight jihad in the name of Allah, Mohammed and the religion he founded never impinge upon the “narrative”. There is only “terrorism”, which is committed by “violent extremists”.

And also, of course, the “Islamophobes” who slander the peaceful Muslims.

God help Britain.

As a Thanksgiving Day present from the Colonials to Blighty, here’s a reminder that things in Albion were not always this way. The poem below is by the renowned tragic Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822):

To The Men of England

Men of England, wherefore plough
For the lords who lay ye low?
Wherefore weave with toil and care
The rich robes your tyrants wear?

Wherefore feed and clothe and save,
From the cradle to the grave,
Those ungrateful drones who would
Drain your sweat — nay, drink your blood?

Wherefore, Bees of England, forge
Many a weapon, chain, and scourge,
That these stingless drones may spoil
The forced produce of your toil?

Have ye leisure, comfort, calm,
Shelter, food, love’s gentle balm?
Or what is it ye buy so dear
With your pain and with your fear?

The seed ye sow another reaps;
The wealth ye find another keeps;
The robes ye weave another wears;
The arms ye forge another bears.

Sow seed, — but let no tyrant reap;
Find wealth, — let no imposter heap;
Weave robes, — let not the idle wear;
Forge arms, in your defence to bear.

Shrink to your cellars, holes, and cells;
In halls ye deck another dwells.
Why shake the chains ye wrought? Ye see
The steel ye tempered glance on ye.

With plough and spade and hoe and loom,
Trace your grave, and build your tomb,
And weave your winding-sheet, till fair
England be your sepulchre!

— Percy Bysshe Shelley

The Very Highest

Pine top

Happy Thanksgiving to our American readers!

My normal procedure on Thanksgiving is to thank everyone who makes Gates of Vienna possible. But the number of people I need to thank has grown so huge — the tipsters, correspondents, translators, and contributors now comprise more than a hundred people — that it is very difficult to do. I made an attempt during our fundraiser a couple of weeks ago, so that will have to serve, even though I left some people out — which is all but inevitable.

I’ll just thank everyone together: you all know who you are.

Let’s back off a bit and see what makes all this work. The various categories of people who are necessary for the functioning of this enterprise are:

  • Readers
  • Commenters
  • Tipsters
  • Correspondents
  • Translators
  • Transcribers
  • Video people
  • Contributors (in the sense of writers who contribute guest-posts)
  • Donors

There’s a lot of overlap there — some people wear several hats. We have tipsters who are correspondents, and contributors who are also translators. This is a distributed operation, so the assignments tend to divide themselves up amongst the people who can best perform them.

The larger enterprise has become considerably more effective over the last two or three years because we have collected enough people to perform all the necessary tasks. We also have (mostly) sufficient redundancy to make sure we can do the job when required.

For example, yesterday afternoon our Danish correspondent TB sent a tip about the “Terror Cell” TV series. He didn’t have the time to translate the Politiken articles, so we sent the task to Anne-Kit in Australia, who delivered the translations promptly. Another volunteer then YouTubed the trailer (minus the commercial, thank you!), and the whole piece was posted on the same day the articles were published in Denmark.

Now that’s efficiency.

And it had nothing to do with me or Dymphna, but everything to do with the Gates of Vienna community. This transatlantic (and trans-Pacific) confluence of talent and dedication is what makes our project possible.

So thanks to everybody for being willing to work together towards our common ends. It brings to mind a relevant chapter from the Tao Te Ching:

The very highest is barely known by men.
Then comes that which they know and love,
Then that which is feared,
Then that which is despised.

He who does not trust enough will not be trusted.

When actions are performed
Without unnecessary speech,
People say, “We did it!”

— Lao Tsu, from Tao Te Ching, Chapter 17
