In Defense of Hatred

From Pogo, by Walt KellyHatred has fallen on hard times. When questioning the sexual orientation of a horse is considered a hate crime, you know that times are tough. Hate speech, hate crimes, “don’t be a hater…” Well, at the risk of being sent before the PC tribunal and then lined up against the multicultural wall to be shot with environmentally sensitive all-natural bullets, I’d like to rant a little bit about hate.

*** WARNING *** WARNING *** WARNING ***

Obnoxious and offensive hate speech lies ahead! For those of tender sensibilities, skip this post!

Let’s celebrate diversity in a new way. How do I hate thee? Let me count the ways!

I’ll open with the Firesign Theatre, who answer the question: What makes America great?

It’s candied apples and ponies with dapples
you can ride all day!
It’s girls with pimples and cripples with dimples
that just won’t go away!
It’s spics and wops and niggers and kikes
with noses as long as your arm!
It’s micks and chinks and gooks and geeks
and honkies (Honk! Honk!) who never left the farm!

What article in the Constitution forbids an American to hate? Which one of the Ten Commandments says, Thou shalt not hate?

The question is: Are there people or things worth hating?

Let’s just start a little free-lance hater’s list.

I hate the fanatics of the Great Islamic Jihad, the ones who brought down the Twin Towers, the ones who behead people on video and kill innocent women and children without compunction. I hate the brutal totalitarian dictatorships that enable the Jihad, the regimes like those in Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Cuba, North Korea, and Zimbabwe.

I hate those barbaric bastards in Muslim societies who terrorize, mutilate, and brutalize women, and do it all with the blessing of their religion.

I hate the fellow-travellers in the West, the dhimmis and the wannabe jihadis, who facilitate the terrorists, who interfere with and pick at and ankle-bite the efforts of our brave soldiers in the war against the Great Jihad.

I hate the fact that our common language has been so debased that words like “gulag” and “holocaust” no longer have any meaning. I hate the fact that we all must dance around what we really want to say, cloaking our intentions with circumlocutions and euphemisms. I hate the fact that objectively considering who our likely killers might be is called “racial profiling”.

I hate the feminist bullies who had an attack of the vapors and emasculated the president of Harvard for daring to suggest the existence of genetic differences between men and women. And I hate Larry Summers for being a coward and rolling over for them, instead of telling them where they could stick their “gender equity”.

I hate the leftist pedagogues in our schools and universities who teach our impressionable young that America is a bad place, run by racist, sexist, and homophobic bigots. I hate the peddlers of discredited ideologies who infiltrate our culture at every level.

I hate the Jesus Hucksters, who claim to serve God but really serve Mammon, the ones who give Christianity a bad name. I hate the broad-based evangelical belief that prosperity is evidence of God’s favor.

I hate the anti-Semites, both here and abroad, the folks who respect Hitler and want to finish his work.

I hate people who wear Che Guevara T-shirts.

I hate the fact that Government works its tendrils into every part of my life, so that I can’t build a house, flush a toilet, or even buy a bag of Doritos without the government meddling. I hate the fact that our government, made up of our elected servants here in the land of the free and home of the brave, puts harmless pot-smokers in jail.

I hate the race hustlers, the poverty pimps, the TV talking head know-it-alls, and the shameless, voracious lawyers who have eaten away the vital parts of our civic body. I hate the cynical conmen who make their living off the stupid and the addled and the aged and the young.

And above all I hate socialists of all kinds — Fascists, Nazis, Communists, Fabians, Greens, you name it — because they made all the rest of this mess possible by poisoning the well of our political discourse so that their degraded ideology has leached into the soil of the larger culture. I hate the fact that their smug, self-righteous zeal has undermined and threatened the very existence of Western civilization.

That’ll do for starters. I’ll take suggestions from the gallery.

And I’ll close with a quote from Bob Dylan: Don’t hate nothing at all except hatred.

  1. A fairly comprensive list, I’d have to think quite a while to add to it, and you’ve certainly given enough to savor.

It’s a shame that the tactic of the left is always to marginalize dissent by labeling it ‘hate.’ I understand the desire to embrace the attack, a la ‘Yankee Doodle’ among our revolutionary benefactors.

But the serious point that arises from your embrace of the ridiculous [something the ‘real’ Baron would never do ;-)], is the sad fact that the idea of righteous anger has been twisted by the left into a pathology (“hate”), by these, the very people who would tear the foundations out from under true pathologies (ref. the DSM-IV).

Its sad that your principled stands on the above list would very truly be called hate by many, so that you could be quickly and comfortably dismissed.

  2. Oh, I’d definitely be dismissed out of hand, if any literati were paying attention. That’s the way dissent is handled: throw it into the outer darkness.

I had to keep it short, so I left off a lot of stuff, e.g., I hate beets. Carrots are OK.

  3. Me, too. But that just proves you’re one of Them, a citizen, a square, a gray-flannel dwarf… “Something’s happening here and you don’t know what it is, do you, Dr. Jones?”

  4. “I hate the fact that objectively considering who our likely killers might be is called “racial profiling”.”

for the record, hubby is not allowed to put race on forms for witnesses. I have always considered it on par with hair or eye color, but apparently we are not allowed to.

I hate people who, rather than listen and discuss (as they expect me to do) shout over my arguments.

I hate it when people say, when confronted by facts, “Well, I just FEEL it is wrong.”

And I also hate carrots. Nasty.

  5. Ohhh, I can FEEL the hate!

I would add to your list that I hate the apathetic, uncaring, and unconcerned attitude of the citizenry of the United States. The attitude that would cause a person to not bother to read and consider your post even if it was set before them… in large text.

Beets and carrots, on the other hand, are all God’s lil veggies. Give Peas a chance!

  6. I hate the miserable cowards that think I don’t have sense enough to own a firearm to protect what is mine.

Or how about the slimeballs that suck up to the survivors of a death trying to drum up a law suit to get fat from?

Hate is nothing compared to what I would feel if someone deliberately hurt one of mine. (Oh, yeah, I had my say on that one a day or two ago.)

I hate most of what dribbles out of a TV screen too.

  7. ahh .. great a hate fest.

I think I hate above all artist who style themselves edgy, provocative and progressive when in reality they’re a small incestuous clique going round padding each other shoulders while regurgitating old and tired ideas, which are not only utterly predictable and without the courage to take on really inflammable subjects, but worst of all oh so ungodly, depressingly boring. zzzzZZZ.

  8. Hmmm, history’s my favorite reading, and that produces a few hates, some relevant to our present problems, some not.

Anyway, Mr. Hitler, Mr. Stalin, Mr. Mao are high on the list, as is Mr. Gavrilo Princip, Mr. Lenin, Mr. Himmler, Mr. Beria, et al. Don’t like Fidel and Osama either. I could go on, but this is your blog — probably I’m going to follow suit, though and make a posting on my own about people and things worthy of hatred.

The poster who talked about the left’s demonization of “righteous anger” is right on the money.

  9. I once thought I heard someone say “I love violence”…so I roared “you mean, you love hitting and kicking and shooting and stabbing and bleeding?” …and the whisper came back “no, I love violets because they smell so good.”
    (*groan*)

But, point, ‘hate’ needs to be two different words.

Real hate is selfish, stupid, avaricious. You hate because you’re hungry for more indulgence into the Seven Deadlies, and hate whatever stands in the way.

Baron’s–and the posters here–hate (with the exception of the truly hateful jihad) seems to be for what prevents what could be.

That is, the America that is right there, just a kiss away, a presence fuzzy that can’t quite resolve into solid clarity because so many otherwise fine people simply find it comfy to live with their heads up their ass.

Hating this sort of thing seems to be more love than hate. Bittersweet could be just sweet, if not for the bitter. 😉

  10. Jefe — but you know who I hate even more? People like George Bernard Shaw and H. G. Wells and Walter Duranty, intelligent people who should have known better, but who sucked up to the Communists anyway, either out of ignorance or deliberate and cynical mendaciousness.

Without them, the whole Socialist catastrophe could never have gained any traction in the West, and would have been easier to contain. So many more millions of people died as a result of them…

  11. Buddy, I’m with you.

So many arguments end now with Bush or the Republicans being compared to Hitler. More debasement of the currency of language…

Does mass insanity account for it?

  12. I’m delighted to see the author of LIFE has his own blog.

Since I happily agree with all the posts I have read, I was hoping you might take the time to explain the Goering quote about Art. It was the only thing you wrote that I didn’t get.

  13. Baron, you’re surely correct about the pernicious and baneful influence of the leftist intellectuals-so called, along with their hangers-on and fellow travellers in journalism and entertainment.

So much of it goes back to, again, like everything else — the First World War, which ultimately handed intellectual and political life in Europe, and to a lesser degree in America — over to crackpots and charlatans whom otherwise, in all probability, would have remained safely marginalized.

The replacement of more-or-less Christian kingdoms and empires throughout Europe with all the “isms” was truly a bad bargain for all concerned, except for the aforementioned crackpots.

  14. Marmaduke — The Göring quote is not really Göring; it was from a play (or musical revue, not sure which) that had its grand opening in Berlin to celebrate Hitler’s birthday, some time back in the early ’30s. It was a line spoken by one of the characters in the production(and some of the translations are different, e.g. “culture” instead of art), but afterwards attributed to various Nazis, probably because they quoted it to each other with delight.

When I use it, I mean to express ironic disdain for the artsy-fartsy world. Also, I like to rattle people’s cages. Nothing does that so effectively as invoking Nazis…

  15. Baron, you are so right about GBS and HG Wells and all those property owning, rent collecting socialists with their airy fairy theories about how everyone could live well if they just followed the right (left) ideals. Not one of them had a decent economic theory about how to make it work.

  16. Jude!

You’ve got one of my pet peeves there: leftist economic theories. That’s all they are, theories. Lessons in disaster. Like Social Security and other pyramid schemes. Stupid. Stupid and ignorant. Stupid and ignorant and evil.

  17. I hate the fact that we have gone from Louis Armstrong, B.B. King, and Jimi Hendrix to Ludacris, Snoop Dogg, and 50 Cent.

I hate the fact that in today’s age, what used to be considered chivalrous or courteous is considered sexist and rude. I hate the fact that if I ask a female friend out for coffee (assuming she doesn’t make me sign a contract pledging that is not a “date”) that I cannot pay for her order, as that will mean we are “together.”

I hate the fact that so many peope see believing in Jesus as the Savior of Mankind as a sign of mental weakness, but believing in Mohammed as a Prophet from God as somewhat redemptive and exculpatory.

I suppose three is really enough, since I could go on for a loooong time.

  18. Still on socialism, did you know that the Fabian Society began as a very private society (I Carbonari) with only two members: Rupert Brooke and Hugh Dalton. One Ben Keeling made them converts to his own cult version of Fabian socialism 1907. Members included Annie Besant, GBS, HG Wells, Sydney and Beatrice Webb.

HG Wells ‘The Shape of Things to Come’ must be the bible for EU leaders although we hear much more about Orwell and Huxley. Some of Wells’ ideas: surveillance from the air, health will be monitored, people will be educated to think properly, property will be socialised, eugenics will be practised, no separatist doctrines, a unified world – and the final sentence in the book – ‘…it must needs be the work, first of all, of an aggressive order of religiously devoted men and women who will try out and establish and impose a new pattern of living on our race.’

  19. Wells wasn’t at all unusual for his time, and within his class. Socialism and Modernism were in the air.

The privileged, in the ignorance and stupidity that only wealth can incubate, decided to destroy the basis of their wealth (and everybody else’s), all for the illusory goal of “equality”.

O brave new world, that hath such people in’t!

Arrrggghhh! I hate capitalism, but I really f***ing hate Socialism!

  20. I, like everyone else, have things that irritate me. Much of what everyone has written here I agree with. However it doesn’t cause me to hate. I am an optimist and I think our system is strong enough to survive the nit-wits. Every age has its share of retards that are held in high esteem, ours is no different.

There are two things that I HATE.

Our system relies on checks and balances in the branches of government. Disrupt this and the whole system comes down. The executive and legislative branch rely on honest elections. The judiciary relies on people telling the truth on the whiteness stand.

I hate people who commit election fraud. It would be a capital crime in my book. Really, I’m not kidding.

I hate people who commit perjury. If you get on the stand and provide a murderer with an alibi then you have committed a worse crime than the murderer. I would change the law such that the perjurer would receive the same sentence as the defendant. In a civil trial I would hold an expert witness liable for the amount that the plaintiff is seeking.

  21. I also hate people who think it is a sign of moral weakness to believe in Jesus, but it is a sign of spiritual superiority to believe in healing crystals, pyramid power, tarot, past lives therapy, spirit channeling, and all the other psychologically manipulative schemes for self-aggrandisement and fraud.

  22. On the other hand, I really like the panel from the Walt Kelly cartoon. Is there an online library of Pogo cartoons, or did you scan a page?

Wasn’t there a sequence which featured two ne’er do well birds who justified their parasitism in the language of socialism and addressed each other as comrade?

  23. I think all the old Pogo strips are out now under a new publisher, but I scanned that panel (ca. 1953) from “The Incompleat Pogo”, an original edition of the book that first collected the strips. It’s now in bad shape, consisting of very yellowed and mostly loose pages.

Yes, those guys are the Cowbirds, the communist infiltrators in Okeefenokee swamp. Their dialecticals are quite hilarious; I recommend them.

  24. Thanks, Baron. I gotta go looking for those reprints.

I have only a few Pogo books, all original editions, all falling apart as the pulp paper becomes yellow and brittle and the glue dries out. Have you seen “Uncle Pogo’s So-So Stories”? Not as political as many of the Pogo strips, but just as hilarious. Dang, I miss Walt Kelly.

  25. Yes, I have that book, plus all the others that were printed before about 1966.

IMHO, Pogo was not as good after 1960. Kelly reached a peak in the mid-’50s; he was unmatched back then.

I agree with Peter DeVries that there is nothing funnier than the early Pogo strips. And I prefer the non-political humor.

Very few Pogo quotes make sense outside their context, but I offer this one: “Grand-ma’am never used nothin’ but a Dresden cuspidor — us was all Society types.”

  26. I’ll sign on for most of that, though ‘hate’ as an emotion doesn’t much occupy me.

    But C-Rap music might inspire me . . . .

You realize the Dylan quote directly contradicts the entirety of your post, don’t you?

  27. I hate emo-music.
    And the UN.
And people that want to rag on me for using my tarot cards. 😉

Baron, Firesign Theater rocks! You and Charles Johnson. 😉

  28. Brilliant Rant!

The only thing I’d add is that I hate that the loudest, most obnoxious socialists are multi-millionaires and billionaires (soros, dan rather, etc.) who never have to be worried that their idiotic ideas may hurt them. It’s always someone else who pays.

  29. I hate that I missed all this reading time at your blog not really knowing how interesting you all are.

Are you really interesting, or is it that your pages look so beautiful?

Something is definitely right here, and I hate… well, my secret confession: I hate going to bed at night. I’d rather stay up and read.

  30. Fabulous post, yet again. I, personally, defend my own hatred on a daily basis. But as misery loves company, hatred desires it utterly. And I too hate the religion that has become “feminism” as well as the religion that has become “liberalism”.
Where are all of these groups who claim to exist to protect people like me? I suppose that my “hatred” has gotten me kicked out of the ball yet again. As I’m all dressed up with nowhere to go, I am thrilled to have found this delightful party instead. I do love making new friends for all of the ones I’ve lost since I stopped being silent politically.

  31. pst314… whilst I am an Athiest, I totally agree with your comments regarding the denunciation of Christianity and elevation of other, more ridiculous beliefs.
A4g…Yes, the left far too often use “hate” as a way to marginalise dissent. Question is what is a good rebuttal?

  32. I don’t get why you don’t despise feminists. I do. They didn’t do anything, but destroy so many families. I’m Romanian. We didn’t have feminism here and women got full civil rights in the middle of the second half of the 19th century(in the same time as men) and political rights in between the two world wars. They destroyed motherhood and femininity. They make up false statistics. They’re just the multiculturalism’s retarded sister as a manifestation of cultural Marxism. They have the same principles in their ideology and they follow the same patterns.

  33. False equivalency.
The Jews living in Europe before the 1940s were assimilated to European culture.
They did not carry out terrorist attacks, rape women or murder men.
They did not want the infidel “to feel himself to be subdued.”

  34. fahad: The islamophobea in europe reminds us the situation of hitler occupied germany in 1930s.

You again? Since you bring up Hitler, guess where the greatest number of his present-day admirers live?

THAT’S RIGHT! In the Muslim Middle East!
