Jihad Thwarted on the Côte d’Azur

Update: For those who have commented on the “900 kilos” vs. “900 grammes”:

Read the article closely. You’ll notice that the at the time of his arrest there were 900 kilos of explosives in his flat. The 900 grammes of TATP are also mentioned, but they were discovered back in February.

900 kilos of TATP (“Mother of Satan”) would create a very large crater if detonated.

Counter-terrorism police in France arrested a suspected mujahid who had 900 kilos of explosives stored in his apartment near Cannes. The culturally enriched suspect had recently returned from fighting in the Syrian jihad, and is thought to have been planning an assassination operation.

Many thanks to Bear for translating this news report from French TV, and to Vlad Tepes for the subtitling:

Below is a news story from RFI about the arrest:

French police thwart alleged Islamist attack by returning jihadist from Syria

France’s counter-terrorism unit said on Wednesday it had thwarted an imminent attack by a returning jihadist from Syria, who was preparing to strike in the Southern Côte d’Azur region. 900 kilos of explosives were found in the suspect’s temporary flat near Cannes. He is currently in police custody.

The suspect known only as Ibrahim B. was first spotted by Greek authorities on January 3. He was found returning from Syria, where according to sources he’d fled in September 2012 with two companions.

All three men are said to belong to a notorious terrorist group called Cannes-Torcy, that was broken up by police last year. Their escape to Syria saved them from the police raid at the time.

But investigators kept them on their radar. Police suspected them of joining the Al Qaeda-linked rebel group, the Al Nusra Front in Syria, and of sending terror messages via Facebook to attack the country.

On January 16, Ibrahim B. was eventually arrested in Italy and extradited back to France where he was jailed. On February 17, his temporary flat in Mandelieu-la-Napoule, near Cannes, was searched to the ground and 900 grammes of TATP explosives were found.

Police are on high alert after growing numbers of French youths leave to fight with Islamist rebel groups in Syria. As a first wave of volunteers returns home, there are fears that this could lead to home-grown terrorist attacks.

Taqiyya Trial in Birmingham

Tim Burton of LibertyGB is to be prosecuted next month for making disparaging comments about a well-known “British” Muslim. Enza Ferreri, the press officer for LibertyGB, just sent us the following report on this egregious politically-motivated prosecution:

Taqiyya Trial in Birmingham

Tuesday 8 April at 10am Tim Burton, the Radio Officer of the British party Liberty GB, will appear at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court.

He has been charged by the West Midlands Police with racially aggravated harassment for a few tweets about Fiyaz Mujhal that called him “a mendacious grievance-mongering taqiyya-artist”,

Fiyaz Mujhal, founder and director of the organisation Tell MAMA (Measuring Anti-Muslim Attacks), came to public attention when he was exposed by the Telegraph’s Andrew Gilligan as having massaged some facts and figures about “anti-Muslim attacks” following the Woolwich murder.

These revelations, along with previous discoveries of discrepancies between police official figures and those of Tell MAMA — which had inflated both rates of and increase in anti-Muslim crimes — led to the organisation’s public funding being discontinued. By then it had already received £375,000 from the UK government.

Knights and Dames Return to Australia

Here’s some good news from Australia. A long-time reader from Down Under just sent us the following note:

Hi Dymphna and The Baron,

This news item has been all over the Australian news outlets.

Americans might not understand why conservative Australian like this, but many do.

As part of the British Commonwealth (Queen Elizabeth II is our legal Head of State) Australia always used to participate in the Royal honours system (Sir ABC, Dame XYZ). This ended with the execrable Gough Whitlam (Labor Party/left) in about 1973, was briefly revived by Malcolm Fraser (Liberal Party/vaguely right, he claimed) and then dropped.

Tony Abbot (Liberal Party/actual conservative) has revived it once again! This is a move worthy of RESPECT!

There is a double deliciousness here — lefty heads are exploding like Champagne corks on New Year’s Eve, and I (along with many other conservative Australians) like the return to tradition. Note that the titles are not hereditary, and confer no actual legal or social privilege, other than being allowed to call oneself “Sir So-and-so”.

The best detail is that the current Governor General (Queen Elizabeth’s representative in Australia) is an avowed republican (i.e. wants to remove the Queen as Australia’s Head of State) but has accepted the Honour (Dame Quentin Bryce).

Note also that the Governor General has little real power — only in extreme circumstances of failure of government can he/she dismiss the Prime Minister and call an election.

Still, round 1 to the conservatives!

Witch-Hunt Against Wilders

Our Dutch correspondent H. Numan has published an analysis of recent political events in the Netherlands at FrontPage Mag. Some excerpts are below:

On March 19, 2014, local elections were held in the Netherlands. On the eve of the election, party leaders celebrated their victories (or losses, as it were, for most parties). During the festivities Dutch politician Geert Wilders appeared in the Hague, one of the two cities in which Wilders’ party, the PVV (Party for Freedom), participated in this election. In a rousing speech before enthusiastic party supporters, Wilders asked the audience if they wanted a bit less local taxation and fewer Moroccans. The audience shouted, “Less! Less! Less!” This created a storm of protest from just about everyone in the country. Wilders’ remark was taken out of context and is being used to vilify him once more.

The political climate in the Netherlands surrounding Wilders now resembles the demonization of Pym Fortuyn in the months leading up to his assassination almost twelve years ago.

Last Sunday the IKON and EO TV stations broadcast a special interreligious Dutch Reformed service denouncing Wilders. The theme was based on Kennedy’s famous “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech. The Sunday service theme was a copycat variation: “We are all Moroccans.” Dutch people present literally embraced Moroccans to show their support for this poor, vilified minority. People wore T-shirts with the text “Wij zijn Marokkanen!” (“We are Moroccans!”).

The message of the fanfare was: We abhor the outright racist remarks of Geert Wilders last Wednesday. We strive towards an all-inclusive society, in which people of all races, cultures, religions and sexual preferences live together in peace. We believe that God/Allah wants it to be that way.

All political parties left, right and center denounced Wilders and demanded his apology. Wilders, nonetheless, is standing by his words.

The VVD (conservative party) Prime Minister has joined the chorus of critics, which now includes all major parties. His party was the last to join.

The PvdA (Labor) party is going even further. They announced that no parliamentary motion presented by the PVV will be supported by the PvdA. No matter what, the PvdA say they will vote against any PVV measure. Once a motion fails, the PvdA will propose it again and this time support it as their own party motion.

[…]

In contrast, another news item in which fifteen “lightly tinted” juveniles (the politically correct term for Moroccan hoodlums) entered a house, seriously mistreated the three inhabitants, ransacked the premises and got away before the police arrived on Friday does not warrant any attention anymore. If only because it would firmly underline the words of Wilders.

England’s Requiem: “Dark Albion”

This book has sat like a shadow on my desk, waiting for the time I could face the daunting task of writing about England’s dystopian present and its even sadder future.

But sad as it is, the work cannot be postponed any longer. In the lead-up to the elections in some of the former countries of Europe now gathered into vassal satellites of a forced “union”, the walls are so obviously and unrelentingly closing in on people like this author. All the native peoples of Europe, people whose biggest sin is an abiding love of their homeland, will be consigned to a future they didn’t want, just because Brussels has the dictatorial powers to make it so. And the Political Class in charge of each former country wants this to happen so that they can continue to enjoy their status as the new nomenklatura. What “the citizens” want has ceased to be part of the equation.

Dark Albion is a commoner’s book. This is a series of essays for people who don’t often get to see their plight written about with sympathy, sans snark or condescension. It is written by one of their own, a pensioner from London’s East End who decided to get it all down before the story was obliterated entirely under the mass of foreign feet trampling everyone in their path.

The chattering classes will sneer or – more likely – they will pretend he and his fellows don’t exist except as occasional punching bags. It is as though a member of Tommy Robinson’s family, or a quiet voice among his band of brothers (or uncles), has stood up to have his say. His words will be tossed into the same oubliette where those in charge threw Tommy.

An amended precis from the author:

In this series of stand-alone essays, a Cockney pensioner (whose lifetime coincides exactly with the arrival of vast numbers of settlers) depicts mass immigration in general, and aggressive Islam in particular, as a catastrophe. He begins his “Requiem” with a brief summary of the coming of the English in 449 A.D., and concludes with a portrait of England in 2066, during the reign of King William the Conquered.

The book captures the rage and anger of the Displaced and Despised toward their politicians and those who do nothing, say nothing to stop this destruction. In fact, they profit from the selling off of England to those who neither value nor cherish her traditions and culture.

In those regions of the West which were considered to be the victors in World War II, this radical transformation of countries like England was not supposed to happen. Wasn’t this what Englishmen and Frenchmen and Free Poles, etc., wasn’t this what they’d fought and died to avoid – i.e., the subjugation of their descendants by foreign tyrants?

“William the Conquered” is the last chapter of Albion. We have stored a condensed version of that piece here at Gates of Vienna so that it can be read again after this post has past. Please feel free to link to it or use it as you wish. The book will also be available on the sidebar.

Here is a video enactment of that chapter on Poor William:

This is a synchronous moment where the coming elections in the member states of he EU are generating essays on the internet about the turbulent electoral situation in Europe. To say that Brussels is nervous would be an understatement.

Below is one such reflection, entitled appropriately enough, “European Elections Turn Nasty”.

Another Day, Another Blizzard

Here we go again.

We’re in the midst of our third major winter storm so far this March. About four inches (ten cm.) of snow is on the ground, and it’s still coming down. It’s supposed to continue for several more hours.

Snowstorms in March (or even April) are not all that unusual at this latitude, but usually they’re light, wet, and very temporary. This, on the other hand, looks like a January storm. It’s much drier than I would have expected.

Below are two views from our kitchen window:

“To the Last Gasp, I Will Always Let My Voice Be Heard”

Geert Wilders, the leader of the Party for Freedom in the Netherlands, gave an historic speech on March 22, 2014.

He spoke out spontaneously, without a prepared text, before answering media questions. His remarks were prompted by the recent controversy over an incident when his supporters chanted a call for “fewer Moroccans”.

In the following video you’ll notice a poignant parallel the PVV leader’s words: one of his well-trained bodyguards stands behind him, constantly scanning the room in a professional manner, alert to the possibility that one of the thousands of people who want to kill Mr. Wilders may appear on the scene at any moment.

Ukraine as Quantum Decoherence, Part 1

Note: This feature essay was originally published on Saturday March 22, and was “sticky” for several days. Scroll down for more recent posts, including last night’s news feed, “Competing to Re-Islamize Turkey”, “A Million Dragon’s Teeth”, and the latest from Pat Condell.

At our request, Takuan Seiyo has undertaken an analysis of recent events in Ukraine. The following detailed account is the first part of a comprehensive two-part report on Ukrainian “democracy”.

Ukraine 2014

“Ukraine” 1750

“Ukraine” 1600

Ukraine as Quantum Decoherence
by Takuan Seiyo

Some basics

The maps above show present-day Ukraine on top, its terrain in 1750 in the middle, and in 1600 at the bottom. There would be no country called Ukraine — there had been several ukraines i.e. “borderlands” in Eastern Europe — until 1917 for Eastern Ukraine only, on and off as the Ukrainian People’s Republic. It’s a hint of how convoluted the history of the region is that just in 1918-1920, Kiev’s territory was under the governance of the Ukrainian People’s Republic, German-sponsored Cossack Hetmanate, again UPR, the Bolsheviks, the Russian anti-Bolshevik army of Gen. Anton Denykhin, again UPR, Poland, and finally, as of July 1920, the Bolsheviks who incorporated it formally as Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, in 1922. Throughout these changes and particularly in 1919 there were recurring waves of pogroms that resulted in the murder of over 100,000 Jews. And ten years after Soviet Ukraine was born, the Soviets murdered at least 5 million Ukrainians in an engineered famine.

If the above slice of chaotic multi-pronged aggression weren’t enough, in 1918 Western Ukrainian nationalists proclaimed the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic in a territory that had gone back to Poland after its century-long seizure by Austria. The Ukrainian campaign of terror against the Poles resulted in the crushing of the nascent entity by the Polish Army in 1919. Then the eastern Ukrainian People’s Republic was attacked by the Soviets, and its head — Ukraine’s one genuine great leader, Symon Petliura — sought relief in an alliance with Poland. The Soviets nonetheless crushed the Ukrainian state, continued in a bloody campaign into Polish Ukraine and on to Warsaw, and were defeated — but returned in 1939, to complete the job.

Rivers of blood have washed over Ukraine’s territory; had for 1000 years. Much of it was and is to this day one kind of Ukraine-dwelling Slav against another, and two great powers — Russia to the east, Germany to the west — that tussled repeatedly over land, resources and influence.

To greatly simplify, and omitting earlier history when Ukraine’s territory had been annexed by Lithuania and later amalgamated into Poland, it’s useful to perceive that as of the 17th century the territory on the right bank of the Dniepr river — see it bisecting Ukraine in the top map — has defined itself as the anti-Polish, Orthodox Ukraine, affiliated with Russia as of 1654 (Treaty of Pereyaslav) and with the Soviet Union as of 1920.

The territory on the left bank of the Dniepr, mostly Greek Catholic, had been for centuries and would remain Polish until 1939, with some of its eastern provinces eventually dominated by Russia. Kiev in the 1600 map is shown well inside Poland; in the 1750 map it sits on the Cossack/Russian side of the Polish border. But what is now Lviv (then Lwow), the capital of Western Ukraine — and of Ukrainian Nazism and pro-EU sentiment — was up to 1939 and had been for over 500 years Poland’s third most important city. It is 460 kilometers west of Kiev, and, if it were marked on the 1600 map, would show so far in the west of Poland that it would be in the upper left corner.

In 1939, Lviv’s population was 50.9% Polish Roman Catholic, 31.4% Jewish, 15.9% (mostly Greek-Catholic) Ukrainian, and the remaining 1.8% various minorities[1]. In 1939-41 the Soviets would greatly “reduce” — i.e. murder and exile to USSR’s far east — the top tier of the Polish population. In 1941-44 the Germans, with Ukrainian OUN/ UPA help, would further “reduce” the Polish population and wipe out the Jewish one so that from 169,900 Jews in 1939, 1,300 would remain by 1944. In 1945, the Soviets kicked out almost all the remaining Poles, and amalgamated this territory into the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.

In the 1750 map, Ukrainian Cossacks (two dark-color zones) are shown holding the buffer zones east of Kiev into Russia. Their main political expressions, the Hetmanate and the Zaporozhnian Sich, would eventually be disbanded by Russia’s Catherine the Great in the 1760s-70s, but the Cossacks continued as Russia’s trusted military proxy, and are Russia-leaning to this day.

In the same period of Russia’s greatness, as a result of Russia’s victory over Turkey in the 5th [sic!] Russian-Turkish War, the two warring powers signed a treaty in 1774 that transferred what is now Southeastern Ukraine, with Odessa at its center, from Turkey to Russia, giving Russia for the first time access to the Black Sea. Turkey also ceded its protectorate of the Crimean Khanate and control of Crimean ports to Russia.

Even those pundits who cite tame excuses for Russia’s current pretenses to Crimea usually don’t mention that what the Russian Commies gifted to the Ukrainian Commies in 1954, Russia had formally incorporated into its territory already in 1783. Moreover, that act contributed greatly to throttling the Mussulmans’ pillaging and slave harvesting in what is now Ukraine (then Poland) that had led to multiple wars between Poland and the Tatar-Turk alliance for over two centuries, ending only in 1699. If it weren’t for the ultimate battlefield victories of Russia and Poland after centuries of bloody fighting, the entire Black Sea basin would still be red-orange, as it shows in the 1600 map.

“Allegory of Catherine’s Victory over the Turks,”
Stefano Torelli, 1772

And so we end up in 2014 with a Ukraine where originally anti-Polish and eventually pro-Nazi fascism rules in the west, Russophile Ukrainians, Cossacks and ethnic Russians concentrate in the east and in Crimea, and everyone has lost someone either to the Soviets or the Germans. Crimean Tatars — with a Waffen-SS heritage just as rich as Svoboda Party’s — feel affinity for the Svoboda government in Kiev rather than for their Russophile Crimean neighbors, and Germany and its NATO/US party pull on one side and Russia on the other.

The colors on the map below may as well symbolize the political sentiments, too.

The question is: Why we are dragged into such a morass by ignorant politicians and their pabulum spewing glad-handing MSM footmen. The pervasive willful ignorance of even the foregoing rough and sketchy background of Ukraine perverts the West’s perceptions and actions relative to that country, and the bias of Reality-averse messianic ideology — i.e. Democracy Inc. — spins the whole thing further out into orbits of cartoon craziness.

Gates of Vienna News Feed 3/24/2014

More than five hundred members of the Muslim Brotherhood, supporters of former President Mohamed Morsi, were sentenced to death in Egypt today for their part in the death of a policeman during a riot. Western governments, including the United States, expressed concern over the sentences.

In other news, the Malaysian government has announced that additional analysis of electronic data on the flight path of MH370 has proved conclusively that the plane went down somewhere in the southern Indian Ocean, too far from any possible landing place, thus removing all hope that anyone on the plane survived.

Competing to Re-Islamize Turkey

The following Austrian article analyzes the competition between Fethullah Gülen and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to be the leader of a renewed Islamic Turkey. JLH, who translated the piece, includes this note:

Although this is a couple of months old, I have seen no other references to it and it does lift the curtain a little on what is going on in Turkey. At first blush, Gülen’s own declarations are reassuring. But then, what else could he say, living among us? Cf. CAIR.

At least it’s nice to know who is who when our enemies are fighting among themselves.

The translated article from Kurier:

The Secret Society Around Preacher Gülen

Premier Erdogan is Proceeding Seriously Against the Network of Fethullah Gülen

A Look Behind the Scenes at this Secret Organization

Walter Friedl, February 1, 2014

Both men have a vision and a mission: Establishing a deeply Islamic society in Turkey (and other states as well). This bond united Fethullah Gülen* — who has built up a very clandestine and very influential worldwide network, and Turkish Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

But a bitter battle over power in Turkey has flared up between these two alpha males. The Gülen movement, which has established positions in Turkey, especially in the areas of jurisprudence and police, is said to be behind the uncovering of a corruption scandal in which allegedly involving ministers who have since been discharged. The talk is of bribery in amounts of more than 60 million dollars.

But who is behind the ominous coalition now challenging the Turkish head of state? The KURIER questioned Haken Yavuz** about that, during his stay in Vienna. The political scientist teaches at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and has published the standard reference work on the Gülen movement.

“This is a strictly hierarchical, tightly controlled organization with Fethullah Gülen at the head, surrounded by 20 to 30 top people. Then, worldwide, 3,000 to 5,000 regional directors. Altogether, there are one to two million activists and a number of sympathizers,” says Yavuz.

“Islamic Elite”

The goal is to establish “Islam as normative in everyday life,” i.e., to Islamize society in all aspects, albeit without sharia. To do this, Gülen is relying on education. (The organization runs more than 100 schools worldwide.) “The intention is to raise an Islamic elite, who will fill responsible positions and become influential,” the expert explains.

In Turkey, the “Gülen disciples” are said to have infiltrated to the top in all important sectors. From education and medicine, to the banks, energy and construction, to tourism and the media. And to fill the war chest, all managers are expected to divert 10% to 20% of their earnings to the movement, which the professor — because of how sealed off it is — compares to the secret Catholic organization the Opus Dei.

At first, the relationship between Gülen and Erdogan and his AK Party, which came to power in 2002, was a symbiotic one. “Erdogan needed the personnel resources of Gülen’s people to occupy strategic positions, and Gülen needed the AK Party to be able to place his people in high positions.” The unifying goal: to break the dominance of the military and the secular bureaucrats.

That succeeded. “The common enemy,” as Yavuz puts it, “has been destroyed” — and with it, the previous bond. But why did the Gülen movement, which is rumored to have a close connection to the US government, see this as the moment to go on the offensive? Some observers believe that, because of Ankara’s Iran and Egypt policies (subversion of the sanctions and support for the now banned Muslim Brotherhood), Washington is so angry that it has dropped Erdogan. That motivated Gülen to risk a direct confrontation with the Turkish premier.

A Million Dragon’s Teeth

In an email exchange about American military and foreign policy, Takuan Seiyo gave the following answer to a sardonic remark about the possibility that Barack Hussein Obama is actually a KGB agent:

There is some possibility that BHO is a Manchurian candidate, but I rather think that it’s like Islam’s work.

The Soviets no longer need to go to the trouble of elaborate plots. They poisoned the minds of Obama’s teachers’ teachers. When you grow up on Saul Alinsky, what else is needed as preparation for serious sabotage?

It’s the same thing with Islam. They always look to root out Al Qaeda, while importing millions of Muslims. But if you’ve got Islam you don’t need Al Qaeda anymore; the root of the terrorism is in the religion itself.

You may slay the dragon as the US did the USSR and Bin Laden, but a million dragon’s teeth will grow spontaneously anyway.
