Gates of Vienna News Feed 11/17/2017

The German Christian Democrats — the party of Chancellor Angela Merkel — failed to form a coalition with the Greens and the FDP by today’s deadline. The FDP is reportedly ready to give up and quit. Thus it has been decided to extend the deadline until Sunday.

In other news, although he appeared today in public, the position of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe appears increasingly shaky. His own party, the Zanu-PF, is calling for him to step down.

Moody’s Boost Modi: India Gets First Sovereign Credit Upgrade Since 2004

Moody’s upgrade to India’s credit rating comes as a much-needed boost for India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, who has been criticised for the fallout from the goods and services tax (GST) and demonetisation reforms. Indeed, Moody’s argued that Modi’s reforms will help to stabilize India’s rising debt levels.

Anarchists Vandalize Police Station

A police station in Philadelphia, Penn. was vandalized Thursday night by a group of people claiming to be anarchists, according to reports.

The South Street Philadelphia police station, equipment and vehicles were trashed by a group of eight to 10 anti-police anarchists wearing masks. Red paint in glass bottles were thrown at the building, and multiple car windows were smashed.

Officers know that a group of anti-police anarchists were responsible because they left a bunch of their flyers on the street near the police station.

Inside the First Church of Artificial Intelligence

Anthony Levandowski makes an unlikely prophet. Dressed Silicon Valley-casual in jeans and flanked by a PR rep rather than cloaked acolytes, the engineer known for self-driving cars—and triggering a notorious lawsuit—could be unveiling his latest startup instead of laying the foundations for a new religion. But he is doing just that. Artificial intelligence has already inspired billion-dollar companies, far-reaching research programs, and scenarios of both transcendence and doom. Now Levandowski is creating its first church.

The new religion of artificial intelligence is called Way of the Future. It represents an unlikely next act for the Silicon Valley robotics wunderkind at the center of a high-stakes legal battle between Uber and Waymo, Alphabet’s autonomous-vehicle company. Papers filed with the Internal Revenue Service in May name Levandowski as the leader (or “Dean”) of the new religion, as well as CEO of the nonprofit corporation formed to run it.

Lexington Man Suspected in UNC Chapel Hill Tree Explosion Says ‘Hug a Tree’ In Court

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The Lexington man accused of setting up an explosive device at a historic tree on UNC-Chapel Hill’s campus made his first court appearance Thursday, WTVD reports.

Joshua D. Edwards, 24, entered the Orange County Courthouse in handcuffs and wearing a smile, declaring, “Hug a tree for me, please. Hug a tree.”

Edwards, a former UNC student, is charged with six felonies, including malicious use of incendiary device

His appearance comes two weeks after the incident at the Davie Poplar Tree on UNC’s campus and it also follows two weeks that Edwards spent in medical evaluation.

The fire injured one professor, Dan Reichart, who said he feels no anger toward Edwards but hopes justice is served.

Video from witnesses showed the professor trying to stomp out a fire at the base of the tree moments before the explosion happened.

Reichart, whose UNC career in the Astronomy department spans 15 years, received the Old North State Award on Thursday from Gov. Roy Cooper for his bravery in trying to put out the fire. He sustained first- and second-degree burns on his face and arms, and plans to return to class in the spring.

Resistance Royalty: Pelosi, Soros Headline Left’s Biggest Dark Money Conference

CARLSBAD, Calif. — A secretive three-day conference where big money liberal donors are plotting the next steps of the “resistance” will be headlined by Friday speeches by billionaire George Soros and Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, according to internal documents obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.

The Democracy Alliance, a donor club of deep-pocketed liberal donors that each pledge to direct hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding to approved left-wing groups, descended on California’s posh La Costa Resort on Wednesday morning for its fall donor summit. The group continued its tradition of secrecy, promising all members and guests of the summit their participation would “remain confidential.”

The first page of the conference agenda, which was obtained by the Washington Free Beacon and can be viewed in its entirety below, lays out “participation guidelines,” explaining that the Democracy Alliance is a “safe place” for donors and activists to meet. Guests are instructed not to share members’ names with the press and not to post to any social media sites, to contact Democracy Alliance if “the media or a blogger” contacts them, and to “refrain from leaving sensitive materials out where others may find them.”

This latter directive was ignored.

The agenda for the meeting, titled “Beyond #Resistance: Reclaiming our Progressive Future,” lays out three full days of events culminating in a Friday night dinner headlined by Pelosi.

A German Court Just Ruled That Kuwait’s National Airline Can Refuse Service to Israelis

A German court has ruled that the Kuwaiti national airline can legally refuse to seat and fly Israeli passengers.

The case dates back to 2016, when Kuwait Airways canceled the ticket of an Israeli student who had booked a seat on a flight from Frankfurt to Bangkok after realizing that he held an Israeli passport. Kuwait Airways offered to book him a seat on a different airline, but “Adar M,” as the plaintiff was known in court filings, refused the offer and sued for alleged discrimination.

Kuwait does not recognize the state of Israel, and has a law on the books barring Kuwaitis from entering “into an agreement, personally or indirectly, with entities or persons residing in Israel, or with Israeli citizenship.”

On Thursday, a court in Germany sided with the Kuwaitis — saying the company would face repercussions at home for violating national law.

The passenger’s lawyer, Nathan Gelbart, called the ruling a “shameful verdict for democracy and for Germany in general.” The Central Council on Jews in Germany likened the law to Nazi era restrictions.

Angela Merkel in Crisis: Failing Jamaica Coalition Talks Extend Through Weekend

ANGELA Merkel’s Jamaica alliance is on a knife-edge as the German leader has been forced to extend coalition talks through the weekend.

November 16 was the final deadline for Mrs Merkel and her potential coalition partners to come up with a final deal.

However they were unable to hammer out a coalition plan due to huge disagreements on key issues — crucially including immigration.

The end of talks had already been delayed until Friday at noon over the disputes.

The talks have now been further extended, however without a coalition agreement in the next few days, Germany’s political stability could be severely threatened.

Catalonia Latest; Carles Puigdemont Before Belgian Court

DISPUTED Catalan president Carles Puigdemont will face extradition to Spain as he puts his case to courts in Belgium.

A court date has been set for December 4 for judges to rule on the extradition request.

The president of breakaway Spanish region Catalonia is currently facing up to 30 years in prison for the crime of “rebellion” against the nation’s constitution.

Other political leaders, such as the speaker of the Catalan parliament Carme Forcadell and former cabinet ministers in Mr Puigdemont’s regional government, have already been arrested and detained over the crime.

Madrid has issues a European Arrest Warrant for the separatist leader so he can face the charges in the Spanish capital.

France: Muslims in, Jews Out

French Jews are now not only threatened in their synagogues and schools, but in their homes. A Jewish family was recently held hostage, beaten and robbed in their home in the suburb of Seine Saint-Denis. Before that, a retired Jewish doctor and schoolteacher, Sarah Halimi, was beaten and thrown to her death from her balcony, in the Belleville district of Paris. The man who murdered her, while yelling “Allahu Akbar” (“Allah is Greater”), was a Muslim neighbor. Two Jewish brothers were recently attacked on a Paris street by men wielding a hacksaw and shouting “You dirty Jews! You are going to die”.

Recently, “Paul” received a letter containing death threats, in his mailbox at Noisy-le-Grand. The note said, “Allahu Akbar” and contained a 9mm bullet. The next day brought second letter. That one said, “you will all die”. This time it contained the bullet of a Kalashnikov rifle. Many Jewish families, warns Le Monde, are under pressure. In Garges-le’s-Gonesse (Val-d’Oise), young Jewish men who had built a temporary autumnal hut (a sukkah) in the yard of their synagogue were attacked in the neighborhood by people shouting, “Dirty Jews”.

Historic Jewish quarters have been emptied. Jérôme Fourquet and Sylvain Manternach, in their book, “L’an prochain à Jérusalem?” (“Next Year in Jerusalem?”) tell of Jewish children leaving public schools in favor of private ones. Organizations have been helping 400 Jewish families relocate their children into private schools, to be more secure.

Germany: Spike in Stabbings

by Soeren Kern

[…]

Another flashpoint of knife violence is North Rhine-Westphalia; stabbings are rampant in Bielefeld, Bochum, Bonn, Cologne, Dortmund, Düsseldorf and Essen, among other cities. Düsseldorf’s city center has been particularly plagued by stabbings.

Many knife attacks appear to be random, indiscriminate assaults on innocent bystanders — especially at transport hubs and on public transportation:

Munich, October 21. A 33-year-old man randomly stabbed eight people, including a 12-year-old boy, at the Rosenheimer Platz. Police said they “assume” that the stabber, a serial offender with a long rap sheet, was suffering from a “mental disorder.”

Mönchengladbach, October 16. An 18-year-old Algerian, in Germany illegally, randomly drew a knife on a 65-year-old man in a wheelchair at the central train station. …

Knife attacks increasingly involve teenagers and young children as well as women:

Gießen, November 15. Two “southern-looking” men (südosteuropäisch Aussehen) drew a knife on two children at a school playground and took their lunch money.

Dormagen, November 15. A 39-year-old man randomly drew a knife on a teenager at the Helmut-Schmidt-Platz. The attacker was transferred to a psychiatric ward.

Wiesbaden, November 14. A man drew a knife on a woman and her children in broad daylight at a playground. The woman said the man tried to steal her dog and when she resisted, attacked her. …

In mass brawls between groups of people from different nationalities and ethnic groups, knives appear to be weapons of choice:

Erfurt, November 11. A 22-year-old Afghan was stabbed and seriously injured during an altercation with other Afghans at a multifamily house.

Rüdersdorf, November 11. A 19-year-old was seriously injured during a knife fight at a multifamily house.

Hamburg, November 9. Three men were stabbed during a knife fight in Eimsbüttel. …

Knives have also been used in “honor” violence and internecine disputes:

Bad Homburg, October 30. A 40-year-old man stabbed to death his 31-year-old wife and mother of their three children. Police said the man was angry that his wife was using social media.

Oldenburg, October 14. The trial began of a 37-year-old Iraqi accused of stabbing to death his wife, the mother of his five children, who were in the house at the time of the attack. According to the indictment, the Iraqi murdered his wife to restore the “family honor” after he believed she was having an affair with another man. The woman had, in fact, been attending German language courses.

Panic in Brussels Over How to Plug EU’s Brexit Budget Hole

BRUSSELS is preparing for a showdown with the EU’s poorer states as it sets out its planned budget to fill the huge financial black hole left by Brexit.

The first confidential draft papers are being circulated, outlining how the European Commission proposes dealing with a 16 per cent drop in revenue from 2020, once Britain leaves the bloc.

Among three suggestions is a drastic cut in aid funding to countries’ poorer regions — a move likely to infuriate populations already disillusioned with the European project.

Spain, still deep in crisis over the Catalonia’s attempts to break free of Madrid, would see funding for regional areas ilike Andalucia and Extremadura effectively cut off, having previously been pledged €37bn between 2014-20.

Sinead Wooding, 26, had dialed 999 after her husband Akshar Ali, 27, had banned her from seeing friends and family, on May 13.

But by the time police arrived at her marital home in Leeds, Ms Wooding’s body had been dumped in a nearby woodland and set alight, Leeds Crown Court heard.

2 Israelis Wounded, One Severely, In West Bank Car-Ramming Attack

Two Israelis were wounded, one seriously, in a West Bank car-ramming attack allegedly by a Palestinian teenager who later was shot.

Even Ezer Holaring, a 35-year-old father of five, suffered a serious head injury Friday in what police are calling a terrorist attack. David Ramati, 70, was moderately wounded in the attack at the Efrat South junction near Jerusalem. Both live in the Kiryat Arba settlement outside Hebron.

The driver — Izz al-Din Ali Abu Rmeishan Karajeh, 17, from the Hebron area — was shot while attempting to stab soldiers near the scene of the initial attack, Army Radio reported.

Caroline Glick: Bannon and the Anti-Israel Establishment

Speaking at the Zionist Organization of America’s annual dinner, Steven Bannon, US President Donald Trump’s former chief strategist and current CEO of the Breitbart news website, said the US political establishment has “lowered the bar on what [pro-Israel] is supposed to be.”

Bannon invited the pro-Israel activists to join what he referred to as the “insurgency movement against the Republican establishment and against the permanent political class in Washington, DC.”

Bannon argued that it is because of the Republican establishment that then president Barack Obama was able to implement the nuclear deal with Iran.

Bannon is correct. Had a non-establishment senator such as Ted Cruz chaired the Senate Foreign Affairs committee in 2014 and 2015 instead of Senator Bob Corker, in accordance with the US constitution, Obama’s radical nuclear deal would have been treated like a treaty. It would have required the approval of two-thirds of the Senate and it would have gone down in flames.

Instead, Corker stood the Constitution on its head, co-sponsoring the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act, which required two-thirds of the Senate to reject the deal in order to block its implementation.

As for US financing of Palestinian terrorism, the blame lies mainly at the feet of the permanent political class — particularly the denizens of the State Department…

Muslims Are Converting to Christianity in Record Numbers

How are so many conversions taking place in oppressive countries where proselytizing can bring a death sentence?

“We are in a time of the first ever mass conversions of Muslims,” Father Mitch Pacwa SJ told me in a phone interview. “God is doing a mighty work among them.”

Pacwa is a host for EWTN radio and TV, a frequent pilgrim guide to the Holy Land and is fluent in 13 languages including Arabic. He is considered an expert on the Middle East and produced the DVD Christianity & Islam: Are We at War? and co-authored Inside Islam: A Guide for Catholics.

Pacwa said he began hearing talk of conversions to Christianity around 2005 on Al Jazeera Television, the Arabic news satellite TV channel with 80 bureaus around the world. “They were reporting on the mass conversions of Muslims—as many as 6-8 million—in sub-Saharan, Africa, and they have repeated the warning every year,” he said. “I’ve confirmed it with Africans I know who have told me again and again about conversions in places like Nigeria, Uganda, Mali … that’s why Boko Haram has become so active. They are actually quite scared and trying to terrorize. But the very act of terrorizing people has ended up with people becoming more disgusted with Islam.”

Zimbabwe Latest: Ruling Zanu-PF Urges Mugabe to Step Down

Regional branches of Zimbabwe’s ruling Zanu-PF party have joined growing calls for President Robert Mugabe to resign.

War veterans until recently loyal to the 93-year-old president and liberal groups have also urged him to quit.

‘Men, Not Immigrants’: Sweden Rules Out Mapping Rapists’ Ethnicity

Swedish Justice Minister Morgan Johansson has firmly ruled out the much-debated idea of publishing statistics on the nationality of sex offenders. He argued against “blaming it on immigrants,” when perpetrators “in fact” were men…

In October, Patrik Jonasson compiled a private survey that revealed immigrants’ drastic overrepresentation in sexual assaults, with men of foreign descent allegedly committing over 90 percent of rapes. The 80-page investigation, which involved over 4,000 rulings from 40 Swedish courts between 2012 and 2014, took several months to complete.

Incidentally, Brå’s own report from 1996 indicated a similar overrepresentation of certain immigrant groups, especially from the Arab world. However, as the number of people of foreign descent rising steadily in Sweden (and reaching as much as 20 percent of the population, according to some sources), the connection between ethnicity and crime has become a taboo topic. Today, the Swedish media abstain from naming the nationality of the culprits.

[Comment: 90% of the rapes committed by those of foreign descent and the “Justice” Minister wants to hide this under the category of “men”.]

Yes, Virginia, Immigration is Turning the Country Blue

Hey, Republicans! Did you enjoy Election Night last week? Get ready for a lot more nights like that as immigration turns every last corner of the country blue.

When Ed Gillespie lost in Virginia, liberals crowed about how they’re winning the war of ideas. The country has thoroughly, emphatically rejected Trumpism!

Republicans, being idiots, played along, arguing only about whether Gillespie’s problem was that he didn’t embrace Trump enough or embraced him too much.

Gillespie’s campaign was fine. No cleverer arguments, community outreach or perfectly timed mailings would have changed the result. Contrary to The New York Times’ celebratory article in last Sunday’s magazine, “How the ‘Resistance’ Helped Democrats Dominate Virginia,” it wasn’t Democratic operative Kathryn Sorenson’s savvy use of Facebook, Google and Eventbrites that carried the day. “The Resistance” didn’t win.

What happened was: Democrats brought in new voters. In 1970, only one out of every 100 Virginians was foreign-born. By 2012, one in nine Virginians was foreign-born.

The foreign-born vote overwhelmingly, by about 80 percent, for Democrats. They always have and they always will — especially now that our immigration policies aggressively discriminate in favor of the poorest, least-educated, most unskilled people on Earth. They arrive in need of a LOT of government services.

Next big war in the Middle East between peaceloving Mohammadans

    Frontpage:

    war-daniel-greenfield
The Shiite coalition gained enormously during the Obama years. And as it continues to press its advantage, it is unrealistic to expect the Sunni powers in the region to accept that. Iran’s expansionism in Yemen is a threat to the Saudis. And if the conflict truly begins anywhere, it will probably be Yemen.

Iran will inevitably try to drag Israel into it. When Muslims fight Muslims, they need to pretend that they’re really fighting non-Muslims. That’s why Saddam tried to drag Israel into the Gulf War. Meanwhile the fighting in Libya continues. The Muslim Brotherhood hasn’t given up on Egypt. The Sunnis and Shiites will clash again in Iraq. Lebanon is destabilizing. And there’s always Bahrain.

A regional war won’t look anything like a world war. Instead all the individual conflicts, the sore points and simmering tensions will flare up around the same time. Iran will invest more of its forces into these conflicts. The Saudis and Egyptians will hit harder. Israel will clash with Hezbollah. There will be riots, massacres and terrorist attacks across the region. And eventually the actual powers will collide.

    Times of Israel:
    https://www.timesofisrael.com/saudi-iran-dispute-unlikely-to-take
    -israel-to-war-analysts/
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Wednesday accused Riyadh of asking Israel to bomb Lebanon, calling it “shameful.”But Eisenkot said Israel had no intention of “initiating” a conflict with Hezbollah.Analysts agreed that while there was no Israeli willingness for a new war, in such a volatile region, events can quickly spiral out of control.

“For many years now Saudi Arabia and Israel have found themselves figuratively in the same trench versus Iran,” said Joshua Teitelbaum, of Israel’s Begin-Sadat Centre for Strategic Studies.
“But now that the conflict has been dialled up Israel is trying not to be pulled in. It needs to operate on its own terms.“Israel will not be dragged into a war on behalf of Saudi Arabia.”

  2. “In other news, although he appeared today in public, the position of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe appears increasingly shaky. His own party, the Zanu-PF, is calling for him to step down.”

Can you believe the US State Department protested the military action against the dictator Mugabe, calling it a takeover of a popular government? In cases like these, the US needs to stay out of the way, and allow a country to find its own way to a satisfactory government. A military dictatorship is far, far superior to the racist kleptomaniac government of Mugabe.

    • The State Department is a haven for the worst kinds of leftists America-haters this country has produced. Better to shut the whole agency down rather than attempt to purge it of those elements which a future administration would just reinstate.

      • Amen.

Most diplomats are professional party animals and vacationers.

The UN should be defunded and ejected to Burkina Faso.

        • Putin and Trump believe the U.N. can be reformed. I have my doubts and have posted many comments in my condemnation of the United Nations and the damage it is causing around the world, but the planet does need to be of one voice and of one voice that reflects all of humanity, not just the vested interests who get to control it.

    • What would you expect from the regimes that sold out an organized state with a bountiful economy like Rhodesia?

      • My own research has revealed that it was the British establishment who put the kybosh on Rhodesia – they did not wish to support Ian Smith’s independent country which is typical of the Globalist controllers and their agenda.

Look up Lord Carrington’s role in undermining Smith and Rhodesia for further info.

        • Yes you are right about Carrington. There was also Soames. A great pity Mrs T was new in no 10 and still overawed by them. Rhodesia was the first country to be made to vote again when it got the wrong answer, i.e. voted for Bishop Muzorewa, when Smith was overthrown by Carrington at the behest of Chinese backed Mugabe and Russian backed Nkomo. Carrington probably judged Mugabe and his backers were the most ruthless and sadistic of all the terrorists so they had better be the ones to be handed power – or the war would never stop.

    • As a footnote, the Hadid sisters and their father claim to be devout Muslims.

I’m sure our pals in ISIS and Saudi would agree.

  3. I don’t understand the hoo-hah about Kuwait Airlines. Kuwait government tells Kuwait businesses “no dealing with Israelis”. The US government does the same thing with countries on our [disapproval] list. Heck, Trump (pboh) banned people from flying to the US from bunches of Muslim countries (thank goodness!)

When your government makes trade with people in certain other countries illegal, then you do what your government says. Period.

Why is this so hard for you to understand? You want to force American airline companies to carry whoever wants to travel wherever they want to go even though Trump has made it illegal?

    Don’t be silly.

    • Similar story at the editorial board of the New York Times and upper echelons at the BBC – diversity is for thee not so much for me.

      The hypocrisy is beyond rank.

  4. “French academc calls for separate Muslim state within France.” I agree up to a point. I would suggest Devils Island.
