Gates of Vienna News Feed 12/10/2016

Two bombs exploded near a soccer stadium in Istanbul, killing at least 29 people and wounding more than a hundred others. The two blasts, one from a car bomb and the other from a suicide bomber, are thought to have targeted police officers. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the atrocity.

In possibly unrelated news, French Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve proposed extending the country’s state of emergency until at least July of next year.

Are We Being Set Up for a Crash? Stocks Hit a Level Only Seen During the Bubbles of 1929, 2000 and 2007

Will the financial bubble that has been rapidly growing ever since Donald Trump won the election suddenly be popped once he takes office? Could it be possible that we are being set up for a horrible financial crash that he will ultimately be blamed for? Yesterday, I shared my thoughts on the incredible euphoria that we have seen since Donald Trump’ s surprise victory on November 8th. The U.S. dollar has been surging, companies are announcing that they are bringing jobs back to the U.S., and we are witnessing perhaps the greatest post-election stock market rally in Wall Street history. In fact, the Dow, the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 all set new all-time record highs again on Thursday. What we are seeing is absolutely unprecedented, and many believe that the good times will continue to roll as we head into 2017.

What has been most surprising to me is how well the stocks of the big Wall Street banks have been doing. It is no secret that those banks poured a tremendous amount of money into Hillary Clinton’ s campaign, and Donald Trump had some tough things to say about them leading up to election day.

So you wouldn’ t think that it would be particularly good news for those banks that Trump won the election. However, we seem to be living in “ Bizarro World” at the moment, and in so many ways things are happening exactly the opposite of what we would expect.

India’s Demonetization Project: Economic Destabilization of an Entire Country, “A Monumental Management Failure”

A month after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced his demonetisation policy, the gloomy weather in the national capital describes quite well the mood of the people here. Sullen but not angry, worried but not yet panicked, uneasy about the future but focused for the present on solving daily problems.

And yet somewhere deep down there is a growing feeling that we are witnessing the twilight of the Indian Republic — at least as we have known it for over six decades- a sovereign, federal, democratic nation, which with all its flaws, stumbles along intact. Few fully understand the real implications of 86% of the Indian currency disappearing overnight but there is foreboding it is a sign of many more drastic events to come.

If something as fundamental as money in a system can be so casually overturned what guarantee is there that you or your family will be safe tomorrow? Why should any of India’s various regions and states take orders from Delhi and its upstart Sultan of Sophistry anymore?

With every passing day though the disaster wrought on the economy and lives of ordinary citizens by demonetisation is becoming starkly apparent. Industries, trade, farming operations and daily consumption of essential goods are collapsing due to the lack of sufficient cash to carry out the simplest of transactions.

The queues at the banks are only getting longer and more frustrating with a surge in violent incidents as the initial support for the government’s self-proclaimed ‘war on black money’ wears thin. After all it is not the rich and powerful who are lining up day after day to exchange their old notes or try and withdraw a paltry 2000 Rupees from the few ATMs that work here and there…

It is only a generation ago that the poor learnt to negotiate cash — itself a complicated concept- and here they are being told to abruptly go digital. It is as if the Earth opened up one morning and swallowed them wholesale.

Along with the poor the real target of demonetisation are thousands of small and medium businesses which thrive only on cash transactions and underpin Indian democracy itself through both their sheer diversity and ability to earn and live independent of state support. Once they are decimated it will be that much easier to establish total control over the Indian economy by a handful of large corporate monopolies, which will also facilitate political dictatorship…

The only consultation Modi seems to have done before embarking on the drastic experiment of ‘notebandi’ was perhaps in front of a mirror with himself — for it turns out none of the senior leaders of the BJP or even the RSS had a clue as to what he was upto- though all of them are lining up to praise his ‘brilliant’ policy out of fear today.

The reason why Modi is able to ride roughshod over his own party stalwarts is because he has cultivated a financial and popular support outside the traditional base of the organisation. If small and medium traders disappear with the digital economy, so be it — the future belongs to big corporations anyway. If the extreme Hindu right is upset with him how does it really matter when hecan win elections with the support of corporate financed propaganda?

With 65% of ATMs Nonoperational, Goldman Warns India is “Returning to Barter System”

India continues to stagger from bad to worse followinhg Modi’s demonetization. With just 35% of ATMs nationwide operational, Goldman warns the shortage of cash continues to incentivize the use of alternate payments, including extension of informal credit and a return to barter systems. Addtionally, the slowdown in activity is dramatically reflected in lower tax collections and discounts offered by luxury car companies.

Goldman Sachs recently introduced their India ‘De-monetization dashboard’ in which they track the progress of the Indian government’s recent currency reform announced on November 8 via a variety of high-frequency data, including money supply, credit/deposit, interest rates, physical asset premia, real economic activity, price indicators and capital flows.

This week’s update shows that cash availability at ATMs is still low. On real economic activity, there were no major data releases this week. However, PMIs and auto sales data released last week suggested a significant slowdown in activity. Separately, anecdotal evidence suggested continued weakness in activity as shown in the lower indirect tax collections and various discounts given by luxury car companies.

According to Livemint, 95% of ATMs (out of 200,000 in the country) have been re-calibrated to accept new notes but only 35% of the re-calibrated ATMs are operational. Banks are preferring to make cash available in their own branches instead of making cash available at ATMs. Daily data from ATMs in the four key metro cities — namely Bengaluru, Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai — show that people are still facing a ‘cash crunch’ in about half of the ATMs. The shortage of cash continues to incentivize the use of alternate payments including electronic payment systems, extension of informal credit and a return to barter systems. The government has further announced various measures to promote digital and non-cash transactions including discounts on digital purchase of fuel, suburban train tickets, and service tax exemptions on transaction charges up to INR 2000 on December 8.

Leftist News Site’s ‘Best-Case Scenario’: Assassinate Trump

Fusion, the liberal news site aimed at millenials and multiculturals and created by the Spanish-language Univision network in 2013, has joined those who think toying with the idea of assassinating Donald Trump is acceptable political speech.

The site posted a four-panel cartoon Thursday by Matt Bors titled, “The best case scenarios under Trump,” one of which shows a plot employing Melania Trump as a Slovenian double agent being ID’d as her husband’s assassin. The comic’s other panels hold out hope for anti-Trumpers in a miraculous reversal from the Jill Stein recount, impeachment and total nuclear annihilation.

Obama’s Terrorism Claim Hides an Inconvenient Truth

On Tuesday, President Barack Obama stated that “Over [the] last eight years, no foreign terrorist organization has successfully planned and executed an attack on our homeland.”

Talk about something actually deserving of being labeled as “fake news.”

Obama’s statement obscures the reality that the U.S. has faced 66 Islamist terrorist plots against the U.S. homeland during Obama’s time in office, 13 of which were successful.

When President George W. Bush left office, the U.S. had faced 28 Islamist plots after 9/11, only one of which was successful. Now there have been 93 Islamist plots since 9/11, and 14 successful attacks.

Obama’s statement is technically accurate since none of these attacks were planned and directed from abroad. Instead, the vast majority of the terror plots and all of the successful attacks since 9/11 have involved homegrown terrorists—that is, terrorists who radicalized and plotted here in the U.S.

While preventing such foreign orchestrated plots is vital, it is no longer enough. The threat has morphed and the U.S. must now do more to counter homegrown and lone wolf Islamist terrorists.

Obama’s comment obscures the truth that in his eight years in office, as shown by the sharp increase in the number of Islamist plots and successful attacks, the homeland has been less safe.

Claiming victory while the U.S. is in the most active period of terrorist activity since 9/11 is not only pushing a false narrative, but it risks diverting our attention from what needs to be done to defend the U.S. homeland.

—————————————————-

[To see the interactive spread sheet of those ninety-three terrorist incidents-to-date in the U.S.since 9/11 scroll past the editorial on Obama’s speech, to the bottom of the above URL. Note that it took a full year for the first incident, the shoe bomber, to happen. (This was the one that sent Daniel Pearl to Pakistan to “investigate”). Not only were there many terrorist incidents during Obama’s reign, the pace actually picked up.

Based on the number of incidents and the people killed, many reasonable people would call his speech not “fake news” but a series of outright, easily refutable lies. This assertion would hold especially true for survivors/witnesses of the terrorist attacks and those who investigated the incidents. This speech is insulting to family members of the dead Americans the terrorists targeted.]

One of These Twenty-One Men and Women Will be Trump’s First Supreme Court Pick

Heritage Foundation’s “The Morning Bell” reports:

Trump is expected to act quickly to fill the seat of Justice Antonin Scalia, who died in February. During a Thursday interview with Sean Hannity, Trump announced he’s narrowed his original list of 21 people to “probably three or four.”

This could present a historic opportunity for Trump to reshape the Supreme Court, author and presidential historian Craig Shirley says.

“With a vacancy and aging people on the court, just as there was a Reagan court and just as there was a Roosevelt court, we might see a Trump Supreme Court,” Shirley told The Daily Signal, adding:

It is less likely these justices will retire. It’s more likely they will go out feet first. When you’re in your 80s, you might as well show up at the office. You’re not going to take up water skiing.

[…]

Trump’s release of the list during the campaign was an unprecedented move, Carrie Severino, chief counsel and policy director for the Judicial Crisis Network, noted after the election.

“Given the significance of the court to Trump’s voters, I’m confident that he will stand by his campaign promise to appoint someone from his excellent list of constitutionalist judges,” Severino said in a formal statement, adding:

While that still would leave the Supreme Court in a 4-4-1 balance, with Justice [Anthony] Kennedy as a swing vote, Trump is likely to have the opportunity to appoint additional justices, who can ensure that the Constitution is interpreted according to its text and original meaning and isn’t used as a vehicle for political policy goals.

Most on the list are state Supreme Court justices or U.S. Court of Appeals judges. The list includes two individuals who have served in Congress and would have a political record to defend. Two brothers also are on the list.

Trump faced some criticism for lack of diversity, with eight white males among the 11 names on the initial list he released in May; his subsequent list in September included one South Asian and one Hispanic…

Rogue Republican Elector Warns Trump: “I Am Not the Only One Who Will Not Vote for You”

Last week a Republican member of the Electoral College, Christopher Suprun, published an op-ed in the NYT explaining why he would not be casting his vote for Donald Trump. Suprun is the same elector who the NY Post reported one monthago that he’s on track to vote as assigned for Donald Trump next month, despite reports saying he’d consider going rogue and voting for Hillary Clinton. Previously, Politico had quoted Suprun in August saying he found Trump so unpalatable, he’d consider going “rogue” and voting for Clinton. He then told the Post that he “always planned to vote for his party’s nominee” when Electoral College electors gather in their respective state capitals to finalize Trump’s presidency on Dec. 19.

He lied, as his NYT op-ed made very clear: “The election of the next president is not yet a done deal,” Suprun wrote. “Electors of conscience can still do the right thing for the good of the country. Presidential electors have the legal right and a constitutional duty to vote their conscience.”

“Trump lacks the foreign policy experience and demeanor needed to be commander in chief”, Suprun also wrote, adding that Trump’s business dealings might pose unacceptable conflicts of interest, Suprun adds — a problem that could seem him “impeached in his first year given his dismissive responses.”

Yesterday, Suprun spoke to Jonathan Karl and Rick Klein on the Powerhouse Politics Podcast, and suggested that there are other Republican electors who will follow Suprun in not voting for Trump. “At this point there are people who have reached out to me. Again it wouldn’t be my place to name who they are,” he said, though he indicated he was talking about Republican electors.

Soft Coup Attempt Imminent? Furious Trump Slams “Secret” CIA Report Russia Helped Him Win

Overnight the media propaganda wars escalated after the late Friday release of an article by the Washington Post (which recently admitted to promoted fake news itself in an attempt to smear other so-called “fake news” sites) according to which a secret CIA assessment found that Russia sought to tip last month’s U.S. presidential election in Donald Trump’s favor, a conclusion that drew an extraordinary rebuke from the president-elect’s camp.

“These are the same people that said Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction,” Trump’s transition team said, launching a broadside against the spy agency. “The election ended a long time ago in one of the biggest Electoral College victories in history. It’s now time to move on and ‘Make America Great Again.’ “…

Nonetheless, at the White House, Deputy Press Secretary Eric Schultz said Obama called for the cyberattacks review earlier this week to ensure “the integrity of our elections.”

“This report will dig into this pattern of malicious cyberactivity timed to our elections, take stock of our defensive capabilities and capture lessons learned to make sure that we brief members of Congress and stakeholders as appropriate,” Schultz said.

Taking the absurdity to a whole new level, Obama wants the report completed before his term ends on January 20, by none other than a proven and confirmed liar: “The review will be led by James Clapper, the outgoing director of national intelligence, officials said.” In other words, the report that the Kremlin stole the election should be prepared by the time Trump is expected to be sworn in.

Trump Cheered by Fans at Annual Army-Navy Game

BALTIMORE (AP) — Donald Trump was greeted with cheers on his arrival at the annual Army-Navy game on Saturday, basking in one of the nation’s most storied football rivalries as he prepares to enter the White House.

The future commander in chief, protected by panes of bulletproof glass, waved to the crowd and pumped his fist as he arrived during the first quarter of the 117th game between the military academies at West Point and Annapolis. The game, on a sunny but chilly day, was being held on relatively neutral ground, at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.

Trump, in an interview with CBS Sports announcers Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson, said he was “totally neutral” on the outcome of the game and quipped that he might make Lundquist, who was retiring from the play-by-play booth, his ambassador to Sweden.

“I just love the armed forces, love the folks. The spirit is so incredible. I mean, I don’t know if it’s necessarily the best football, but it’s very good. But boy do they have spirit,” Trump said. Navy had won 14 straight contests in the rivalry, but Army’s underdog Black Knights prevailed, 21-17, in a fourth quarter comeback that came weeks after Trump’s stunning victory over Hillary Clinton.

Trump spent the first half of the game in the box of David Urban, a West Point graduate and one of his Republican advisers in battleground Pennsylvania, and the second half in the box of retired Marine Lt. Col. Oliver North, a graduate of Annapolis. During the Ronald Reagan administration, North was the National Security Council aide most directly involved in covertly selling arms to Iran and providing military assistance to the Contras, a group seeking to overthrow Nicaragua’s left-leaning government…

Washington’s Proxy-Army Faces Decisive Defeat in Aleppo

The situation is looking increasingly hopeless for the ragtag group of insurgents that have lost more than half the territory they held in just the last week. Every attempt they’ve made to break through Syrian Army lines has been repelled leaving them to defend a few shrinking districts where they will either surrender or die.

On Sunday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov delivered an ultimatum to the remaining militants that clarified the position of the Syrian government and its allies. he said:

Those groups which refuse to leave eastern Aleppo will be treated as terrorists. By refusing to walk out from eastern Aleppo they will in fact go ahead with armed struggle. We will treat them accordingly, as terrorists and extremists, and support the Syrian army in its operation against such armed gangs.

US Secretary of State John Kerry has made every effort to stop the fighting to protect US-backed jihadists that are trying to topple Syrian President Bashar al Assad. Unfortunately, a proposal that was accepted by both Kerry and Lavrov concerning the withdrawal of fighters in Aleppo, was rejected by higher-ups in the Obama Administration ending the prospects for a negotiated settlement. Lavrov expressed his frustration in comments to the media where he said:

They have withdrawn their document and have a new one. Our initial impression is that this new document backtracks, and is an attempt to buy time for the militants, allow them to catch their breath and resupply. The same thing happened with our agreement of September 9. It’s difficult to understand who makes decisions there, but apparently there are plenty of those who want to undermine the authority and practical steps by John Kerry.

According to Reuters, “the Syrian Foreign Ministry said it would now accept no truce in Aleppo, should any outside parties try to negotiate one.” Meanwhile, “Russia and China vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution on Monday calling for a week-long ceasefire.” Simply put, this is the end of the line for the US-backed terrorists that have laid to waste much of the battered country and killed more than 400,000 people. And while Aleppo may not be the decisive turning point in the ongoing conflict, it does put all of the main population centers and industrial hubs back under regime control.

[Comment: Banksters and their puppet politicians will reclassify this proxy army as “refugees” and allow them into western nations to accelerate the deconstruction of western nations.]

The Grim Truth of Chinese Factories Producing the West’s Christmas Toys

Xiao Fang thinks she’s one of the luckier workers making Barbie dolls for the Christmas market at the Mattel toy factory in Chang’an.

True, she says, she works 11-hour days, six days a week, and shares a dormitory with nine other women and gets to see her husband only once a week. She had to leave her three-year-old daughter back home in Sichuan. And there is only a communal bathroom, and if they want hot water they must fetch it from another floor. But at least she has a job, she says. And others have it worse.

Xiao is one of thousands of workers in Chinese factories making some of this year’s must-have Christmas toys.

An investigation with the US-based NGO China Labor Watch reveals that toys including Barbie, Thomas the Tank Engine and Hot Wheels were made by staff earning as little as 86p an hour.

Overtime can run to nearly three times the legal limit. In some factories — including one producing Happy Meal toys for McDonald’s from the new DreamWorks movie Trolls — that means some are on 12-hour shifts and have to work with hazardous chemicals.

Australia, like Canada, is a developed country with a huge land mass, a relatively small population and significant fossil fuel resources — coal for it, oil and gas for Canada.

Four years ago, Australia’s then-Labour government imposed a national carbon price on its citizens.

Two years later, Australia’s then-Liberal government scrapped the initiative after it took $16 billion out of the economy for income redistribution by the government, helped send electricity prices soaring by 25% and increased the cost of living for consumers on a wide range of goods and services.

Bioethicists Want to Purge Christian Doctors

No more saying no to abortion, euthanasia and contraception

Two academic bioethicists want to bar Christians and those who hold other traditional religious beliefs from practicing medicine, and even from attending medical school. The pair fear, as the National Post summarizes, doctors might “impose their values on patients.”

Of course, it is impossible — not unlikely: impossible — for doctors not to impose their values on patients. Even using a tongue depressor on a patient presupposes certain moral values. (Presumably the doctor is doing this to aid in his goal of healing the patient, a moral value.) Since morality infuses all actions, the only real question is this: what moral values should doctors hold?

Julian Savulescu and Udo Schuklenk (I will refer to them as “the SS” hereafter), in their paper “Doctors Have No Right to Refuse Medical Assistance in Dying, Abortion or Contraception” in the journal Bioethics, argue that conscientious objectors not be allowed to train for or to practice medicine. “The problem with conscientious objection,” they write, “is that it has been freely accommodated, if not encouraged, for far too long.” Conscientious Objection

In their definition, conscientious objectors are those medical professionals who refuse to kill or to disperse contraception for traditional religious reasons. Throughout their paper the SS assume, but never argue, it is a moral good that doctors kill patients when patients demand to be killed, or that doctors kill the lives inside would-be mothers when requested.

“Enlightened, progressive secular countries like Sweden, have labour laws in line with our arguments. Sweden provides no legal right of employees to conscientious objection.” To the SS, the more enlightened and progressive a country is, in effect, the farther it is from Christianity.

Evil in the Classroom: Sex Education for Kids

Parents need to know what ‘comprehensive sexual education’ really is — and how to fight it.

Parents, beware. Schools around the globe — including American schools — are now pushing “Comprehensive Sexual Education” on the youngest children, teaching them about their “sexual rights” while cutting parents entirely out of the educational process.

There is evil being taught here — namely, an almost obsessive focus on sexual pleasure, even for the young.

Comprehensive Sexual Education (CSE) is an extremely controversial “rights-based” approach to sex education that covers a great deal more territory than human reproduction. CSE programs promote the acceptance of diverse sexual identities and instruct youth about how to derive sexual pleasure in a variety of ways.

Parents who may be thrilled to see “abstinence” education listed in the curriculum don’t realize what else is being promoted — in lieu of sexual intercourse. CSE content varies from school district to school district and school to school — so it is important for parents to be aware of the particulars of CSE that are being taught to their kids.

Global Elites Put Christianity in the Crosshairs

Global governance ideology aims at eroding and eliminating national sovereignty by reducing national governmental control over the movement of people, goods, services, and capital across national boundaries. It seeks to establish an entirely secular order in which activities such as education, health care, economic development, and justice are fashioned by global experts rather than by the leaders in their natural local and national contexts. Rule by experts, by global bureaucrats, is regarded as the ideal.

These experts in turn share a common set of outlooks about the world. They are secularists who are at best suspicious of but often outright hostile to religion and traditional culture as influences on civilization. They are bureaucrats or advocates of bureaucracy who believe that government by expert rather than by elected officials is the only way to advance a progressive agenda of modernization. They are environmentalists who, to varying degrees, regard human beings and human population growth as a scourge on global ecology. They are thus almost universally population-control advocates who regard the family, especially the traditional family and the religious beliefs of families, as a threat to environmental integrity. Often they are eugenicists who wish to reduce the fertility of less desirable peoples. They are transnationalists who believe that the nation-state is an anachronistic cultural construct in need of deconstruction. They are generally advocates of gender plasticity who seek in the name of human rights to promote global redefinition of masculinity and femininity and thus a redefinition of the human person and of marriage as a normative basis of family life. They are materialists who ultimately deny the transcendent spiritual nature of human beings and who thus are concerned almost exclusively about the physical and emotional needs of people. They are relativists who generally reject the concept of objective moral truth, of natural law, or of the religious and spiritual dimensions of the human person. They regard power and control as the mechanisms by which to remake the world in their own image. They are centralists who have little regard for the rights of subsidiary bodies, local agencies of mutual aid and support, churches, local governments, or even national governments that wish to preserve their distinctive ways of life. In the name of global solidarity, they violate basic principles of subsidiarity.

The traditional teachings of Christianity, rooted in the gospel of Jesus Christ, are a major target for advocates of global governance. They have adopted the mantle of peace, justice, human rights, and humanitarian advocacy-the social gospel of the Church-but have systematically attacked the Church as an institution, the traditional family and traditional moral values, and love of country and love of God. They seek to supplant the Church’s historical role in the provision of corporal works of mercy. They are opponents of religious liberty and even of freedom of conscience.

Liberal Indoctrination Trumps Education at U.S. Colleges

Higher education in America is in crisis, not just because of spiraling tuition costs, but because of the toxic atmosphere on campuses. The disease of political correctness has taken root in our colleges and the causes being championed relate very little to the supposed education being offered on campuses.

UK: Pervert’s Statue Greets Visitors

[WARNING: *Disturbing Content*]

THE BBC is facing calls to remove a statue on its London HQ because it was sculpted by a notorious paedophile.

The statue of Prospero and Ariel, from Shakespeare’s Tempest, above the main door of Broadcasting House was sculpted by Eric Gill in 1932.

The building, on London’s Upper Regent Street, has just had a £1billion refit.

The BBC was unable yesterday to say how many complaints had been made but MP John Hemming raised the statue in a Commons debate on child protection last week, describing it as “unfortunate”.

Gill died in 1940 but it was not until his diaries were published in 1989 that acts such as incest with his sister and two of his three children at their home in Ditchling, East Sussex, became known.

UK: Why Are We Still Celebrating the Art of Eric Gill?

[WARNING: *Disturbing Content*]

I watched the BBC programme ‘How to be Bohemian’ recently and discovered for the first time the story of Eric Gill, ‘one of the most respected British sculptors of the 20th century’.

As well as being described as ‘bohemian’ he was also described as a sexual deviant; he said in his own diaries he had had sex with his teenage daughters, as well as his sister and even his own dog.

Eric Gill (1882 — 1940) was an English sculptor, typeface designer and printmaker. During his lifetime his work was much celebrated. With many sexual undertones his work also focused on the religious. He converted to Catholicism at the age of 31.

Gill’s perversions were brought to life in 1989 in a biography by Fiona MacCarthy who had been given access to his private diaries.

A biography that was described in a New York Times review as “a very odd book. One doesn’t quite know whether to admire “Eric Gill: A Lover’s Quest for Art and God” for its generosity and broadmindedness or to inveigh against it for its moral blindness.”

Moral blindness is the key phrase here, because it seems vast quantities of it surround Gill’s work to this day.

Eric Gill’s statue of Prospero and Ariel currently adorns the BBC’s Broadcasting House in central London. His Creation of Adam is in the Palais des Nations, the headquarters of the United Nations in Europe. The Tate Britain currently showcases his sculpture Ecstasy. And four years ago a special exhibition of his work was displayed at the British Museum. If you want, to you can even buy some of his handiwork.

In 1998 Margaret Kennedy, who campaigns for Ministers and Clergy Sexual Abuse Survivors (MACSAS), called for his sculpture Stations of the Cross to be removed from Westminster Cathedral, but was not successful.

A BBC news magazine article published in 2007 quoted Bishop George Stack, a former administrator of Westminster Cathedral, as saying “There was no consideration given to taking these down. A work of art stands in its own right. Once it has been created it takes on a life of its own.”

But does it? Should that really be the case?

New UN Chief to be Sworn in Amid Uncertainty Over Trump

Incoming UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will take the oath of office on Monday, hoping to show he is primed for action despite anxiety over the US role in the world under unpredictable Donald Trump.

During a formal ceremony at the General Assembly, Guterres will be sworn in before outlining in an address to all 193 UN member-states his plans to confront global crises and reform the 71-year-old United Nations.

The first former head of government at the UN helm, Guterres will take over from Ban Ki-moon on January 1, just weeks before President-elect Trump moves into the White House.

The choice of the former refugee chief as the ninth secretary-general energised many diplomats who see Guterres as a skilled politician, able to overcome divisions that have crippled the United Nations, notably over Syria.

  1. “Deranged potheads”? Puh-lease. Back to the idiocy of “reefer madness”? Say it ain’t so Joe.

One of the best things Trump could do is end the more than century old Drug Wars. The level of violence and corruption around the world would immediately go down. Mexico’s drug lords would stop laughing all the way to the bank. America’s jails would empty out and real criminals could have their space on the bunk.

  2. Re Eric Gill: If the work of paedophiles is to be banned, where is the cutoff point? Is the composer Saint-Saens too recent? If so, what about the sculptor and goldsmith Benvenuto Cellini? Add your own nominations to the list…
